Very slow collections/albums

When I import a collection (album.xml) the collections (>100) are very, very slow. There are no pictures in the collections, but opening / closing a collection-group takes more than 5 seconds.
Is there anyone who has tried to work with many collections-groups?

When I create a .xml with 5 groups of 100 albums each, opening and closing an album group is a little sluggish -- about two seconds.
As I suspected in my suggestion to turn off the use of icons in the keyword-tag display, the problem is related to icons.  If you add a <tagset-item-value-icon> to your albums, opening and closing groups should go pretty fast (it does for me).   You can get a sample of that XML tag by saving some keyword tags to a file.  Though PSE 7 doesn't use icons for albums, it is probably using the same code that it uses for displaying the tag heirarchy, and that code has performance problems if you don't define icons for keyword tags.
I've attached my Albums.xml for you to play with -- you need to view the message on the Web to get the attachment, and if it says "Queued" and is greyed out, then the forum software is broken again.

  • Changing artists names in iTunes is very slow (1 minute per song) in compilation albums

Changing artists names in iTunes is very slow (1 minute per song) in compilation albums. I am using iTunes 10.6.1 Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM 2.66 GHz Intel processor and my itunes library is 340GB. My new music is on the computer's hardrive (about 16GB) and the rest is in an external HD.
It used to work great until I switched to the new version of iTunes (10.6.1) and now changing the artist field is very very very slow (1 minute per song in compilaton albums)
What happened? Can someone help me?

Thank you both!!!!!!  Especially you, Limnos for adding onto the terrific answer from leonieDF.  Yeah, I'm seldom willing to let the software do the driving all by itself.  <heh>  However, to date I've been too lazy to work with what is currently there - and needing to know how to customize the software was my first step.
I'm finally going to reduce the enormous physical size of my cd collection - organizing and storing the jewel cases is too great a nightmare not to mention that it has turned my livingroom into nothing more than a visually overwhelming variety of storage devices--spinners being my favorite, but now mostly unavailable outside of yard sales.  Favorite disks I WILL keep to play in the car (no, my player is too old to have a USB port).
I'm getting a 2T external drive to hold the accumulation - but before that, I wanted to find out HOW to organize things so that I can find them myself - old school.  My ITunes libraries go back many years, but I now want a good cohesive way to save the way that I want - not the way that is set up for me.
Thank you both again very, very much!!

Thank you very much for your reply gdgmacguy :) I did all you suggested apart from restore as new device . Didn't know I could do that . After restore I did restore from back up only,  as I didn't want to end up without contacts details on my phone. If I restore as new device how do I get my all contacts? Still will have to use back up? Sorry if it sounds like I don't know what i am doing, i just have no one to ask who would know. Thank you

  • Very large collection, slow iTunes

I have a massive iTunes library, about 500 GB and 95,000 songs. I have been collecting music for almost 40 years and have ripped my entire CD collection and about 1,000 of my LP's so far. But iTunes is very slow with a large collection like this. Browsing by any of the cover art options is painfully slow. Does anyone have tips on how to speed things up? It wiould be appreciated. All of my music is in AAC format.
    iMac G5 20 1.8 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4)

I'm desperately trying to solve this problem as well. Here's my experience:
    - almost 60,000 songs/300+GB
    - Dual 2.0 G5 w/ 3.5 GB of RAM
    - takes time to load library at application start-up (understandable and doesn't bother me).
    - have run it on both internal and external firewire 400 drives with same problems.
    - my main problem is getting the beachball when I <get info> to alter track info. There is some lag time when using the search box as well amongst a lot of other things. In general, the application just doesn't respond as fast as I would like and it seems to be the size of the library.
    - I added 2GB of ram (up from 1.5) and that didn't help.
    - My percentage of HD used does not seem to affect it.
My only other option (that I can think of) is to get a faster HD (or H Drives and stripe them) to try to increase access or seek times.
I found this bit of info though in another thread that I found very interesting...

I don't know how much of the slowdown is iTunes managing its playlists, and how much is the operating system handling the iTunes Library (the single file containing the tag information).
I ran Sonar (http://www.matterform.com/macsoftware/filesecurity/) to watch file read/write activity while editing track tags. I saw a lot of iTunes Library temp and XML file writing.
My iTunes Library (for 160 Gb) of music is 53 Mb. But the Spinning Beachball corresponds to writing this file. Maybe a faster disk would help things."
This is my fear...that the fact that iTunes stores all that good info in one file (terrifying to me), that it can only handle so much.
Has anyone tried any sort of RAID array with fast HD's with large buffers? I'd love to know if this will help before I sink a bunch of cash into this setup. Multiple libraries are not an option for me...it's kind of like keeping half my records at another house.

  • Smart collection very slow (performance)

I have a problem with the Smart Collection. They are very slow in 3.2
I did a little test and compared 2.7 with 3.2 with the same catalog.
In 2.7 catalog all the smart collections are very fast.
So I have the same catalog with the same smart collections. Often they take 5 - 10 seconds when clicked the first time.
Even a Smart collection yielding 2 images can take up to 5 - 10 seconds.
    This is the Smart Collection
    Name:              Testing
    Match:             All
    Field:               Filename
    Expression:     contains
    Value              ANH_20090331_4253.JPG,ANH_20090331_4254.JPG,
This should result in 2 image. The full names are given.
In LR 2.7 the results are there in a split of a second. In 3.2 the first time you click on it it takes 5 - 10 seconds. The processor goes to 50% all the time.
Even a normal collection (not smart collections) with 97 images takes more than 5 seconds when clicked. This is very slow.
The second time it is within a second. But clicking another "difficult smart collection" and returning, then again it takes 5 - 10 seconds.
    For the record:
    Lightroom version: 3.2 [692106]
Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
    Version: 5.1 [2600]
    Application architecture: x86
    System architecture: x86
    Physical processor count: 2
    Processor speed: 2,9 GHz
    Built-in memory: 2047,0 MB
Real memory available to Lightroom: 716,8 MB
Real memory used by Lightroom: 150,8 MB (21,0%)
Virtual memory used by Lightroom: 148,0 MB
    Memory cache size: 62,4 MB
    System DPI setting: 96 DPI
    Displays: 1) 1280x1024
    Serial Number: 116040017934919748523304
    Application folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.2
    Library Path: D:\Lightroom\FotoDatabase\FotoDatabase-3.lrcat
    Settings Folder: C:\Documents and Settings\Dick\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom

Smart collections are really slow for me also.
It takes well over two minutes to populate the collection's images counts when first starting lightroom.  I have approx 80 smart collections, some quite complex, but even so, this seems very slow.  Once the inital counts have populated, showing the images is reasonably fast.
The rest of LR is pretty fast, SC's are the only thing that bothers me.
Using LR 3.3RC, high end PC:
         Win7x64
         i7/860
         16GB RAM
         SSD for boot
         SSD for LR
         45,000 images in catalogue

I am frustrated with the new update and the ICloud. Any program i open, or website I am in, closes suddenly, an returns to the Home page. Also the keyboard is very slow. None of this existed until I did the two updates. Can anyone help?

I'm wondering where the onsite warranty can be in effect.  Like, can it be used in ANY city in the US?  Can it be used only in metrololitan areas?  What is a metro area in Lenovo's eyes?
Does anyone know where I can get better and accurate info on the onsite warranty?  Like a coverage map would be very helpful.  Because why should I spend the money on it, if I can't access it?
    Looking forward to more info...thanks.
There is no coverage map as such.
I live in what is considered a rural area and had techs driving 60-70 miles one way to get to me, never an issue.
    Obviously, YMMV.
In my not-so-modest experience, both onsite and accidental damage upgrades are worth every penny if one intends to keep their ThinkPads for an extended period of time.

  • Very Slow Query due to Bitmap Conversion

I have a strange problem with the performance of a spatial query. If I perform a 'SELECT non_geom_column FROM my_table WHERE complicated_join_query' the result comes back sub-second. However, when I replace the column selected with geometry and perform 'SELECT geom_column FROM my_table WHERE same_complicated_join_query' the response takes over a minute.
The issue is that in the second case, despite the identical where clause, the explain plan is significantly different. In the 'select geom_column' query there is a BITMAP CONVERSION (TO ROWIDS) which accounts for all of the extra time, where as in the 'select other_column' query that conversion is replaced with TABLE ACCESS (BY INDEX ROWID) which is near instant.
I have tried putting in some hints, although I do not have much experience with hints, and have also tried nesting the query in various sub-selects. Whatever I try I can not persuade the explain plan to drop the bitmap conversion when I select the geometry column. The full query and an explanation of that query are below. I have run out of things to try, so any help or suggestions at all would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Chris
    Explanation and query
My application allows users to select geometries from a map image through clicking, dragging a box and various other means. The image is then refreshed - highlighting geometries based on the query with which I am having trouble. The user is then able to deselect any of those highlighted geometries, or append others with additional clicks or dragged selections.
If there are 2 (or any even number of) clicks within the same geometry then that geometry is deselected. Alternatively the geometry could have been selected through an intersection with a dragged box, and then clicked in to deselect - again an even number of selections. Any odd number of selections (i.e. selecting, deselecting, then selecting again) would result in the geometry being selected.
The application can not know if the multiple user clicks are in the same geometry, as it simply has an image to work with, so all it does is pass all the clicks so far to the database to deal with.
My query therefore does each spatial point or rectangle query in turn and then appends the unique key for the rows each returned to a list. After performing all of the queries it groups the list by the key and the groups with an odd total are 'selected'. To do this logic in a single where clause I have ended up with nested select statements that are joined with union all commands.
    The query is therefore..
    SELECT
--the below column (geometry) makes it very slow...replacing it with any non-spatial column takes less than 1/100 of the time - that is my problem!
    geometry
    FROM
    my_table
    WHERE
    primary_key IN
    SELECT primary_key FROM
    SELECT primary_key FROM my_table WHERE
    sdo_relate(geometry, mdsys.sdo_geometry(2003, 81989, NULL, sdo_elem_info_array(1, 1003, 3), sdo_ordinate_array( rectangle co-ords )), 'mask=anyinteract') = 'TRUE'
UNION ALL SELECT primary_key FROM my_table WHERE
    sdo_relate(geometry, mdsys.sdo_geometry(2001, 81989, sdo_point_type( point co-ords , NULL), NULL, NULL), 'mask=anyinteract') = 'TRUE'
--potentially more 'union all select...' here
    GROUP BY primary_key HAVING mod(count(*),2) = 1
    AND
--the below is the bounding rectangle of the whole image to be returned
    sdo_filter(geometry, mdsys.sdo_geometry(2003, 81989, NULL, sdo_elem_info_array(1, 1003, 3), sdo_ordinate_array( outer rectangle co-ords )), 'mask=anyinteract') = 'TRUE'

    Hi
Thanks for the reply. After a lot more googling- it turns out this is a general Oracle problem and is not solely related to use of the GEOMETRY column. It seems that sometimes, the Oracle optimiser makes an arbitrary decision to do bitmap conversion. No amount of hints will get it to change its mind !
One person reported a similarly negative change after table statistic collection had run.
Why changing the columns being retrieved should change the execution path, I do not know.
We have a numeric primary key which is always set to a positive value. When I added "AND primary_key_column > 0" (a pretty pointless clause) the optimiser changed the way it works and we got it working fast again.

  • After upgrading to OS X Mavericks syslogd needs lot of memory and cpu, system is very slow

After upgrading to OS X Mavericks the system is very slow. securityd and syslogd are using 50% of cpu and memory is also used by syslogd and kerneltask (8 GB out of 12). After rebooting the system it runs very well, a view days later (without reboot, only hibernating) the situation is the same.
Looks like a problem in OS X. Any solutions?

I haven't worked out the LDAP messages but I noticed at other times I was seeing lots of album art messages from BlackBerry desktop. I'd already uninstalled the app but it still had processes running. I followed this link to remove completely; http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/57023/how-to-uninstall-completely-black berry-device-manager
CPU levels have been noticeably lower ever since.

  • Very Slow VDI Client Login Time

    Hi,
My environment contains two Hyper-V Servers for DCs, Connection Broker, RD-Web, and two Hyper-V servers as virtualization host to thin clients. All Hyper-V servers are only 35% utilized and all client VMs don't have a performance issue.
After setting up the roles and creating the "Personalized Pools", I open the RD-Web, click on the collection and here it takes a very long time in securing connection part, then a warning message appears for the connection broker self-signed certificate,
I accept it and again a very long time to open the VM.
After searching the internet I figured out that I should install "PFX" certificates for the connection broker (SSO, Publisher). In my environment, we don't use a public certificate from trusted root CAs, however, we have our own "Enterprise
    Root CA".
I then figured that I should create a certificate with the following attributes:
Advanced Key Usage: Server Authentication, Client Authentication
Key Usage: Data encipherment, Digital Signature, Key Agreement
I created the certificate and imported it to the RD CB, however, the "securing connection" part was even slower than before, so I duplicated the "Computer" certificate, and configured 1024 bit certificate instead of the old one "2048".
The "securing connection" part is taking half the time now, however it is still very long "+60 seconds" to open the VM.
I still suspect that it is a certificate issue and not sure if I have done the correct certificate.
Would anyone help in this case and providing the correct steps to install a certificate for the RD CB from internal CA.
    Thanks.

  • Adding to Library is very very slow

I have 139 GB of music. My library gets slow, until I purge out the entire main library and start fresh.
I begin to add songs to my playlist by dragging folders sorted by genre of music. Progressively it gets slower and at some points it gets very slow.
I have a feeling I have a corrupted file or some file formats that iTunes does not like (maybe a gif or jpeg for album artwork).
Once my library is poulated, it gets so slow that adding one new album I have digitized, takes about 4 minutes before anything happens (then it adds them at normal speed), and my computer is locked up until it finishes adding. The music still plays fine without a skip. My drive are in top condition and not SMART test failures.
I mostly have music, some have album artwork, some do not. Most of my files are mp3 since I use the music for video editing. I get some other files from my customers which may have .m3us .gifs itif .txt in there.
I am running the latest version. I selected all the music in my library , and am changing tags to blank besides the important ones like artist, song name and album (incase there is a bad non alphanumeric character in for example comments)

Any time any change is made to to iTunes (song added, skipped, played, info edited, etc.) iTunes rewrites the iTunes library and iTunes library.xml files.
In addition, the more playlists you have, especially smart playlists, will slow down iTunes because the library and .xml files are larger.
More than 100 playlists and you will likely see a significant slowdown.
The larger the library, the more it will slow down.

  • Very slow query on xml db objects

Hi, I'm a dba (new to xml db) trying to diagnose some very slow queries against xml tables. The following takes 2 + hours to return a count of ~700,000 records. We have some that take 10-15 hours.
    select count(*)
    from MEDTRONICCRM a, table(xmlsequence(extract(value(a),'/MedtronicCRM/Counters/
    Histogram'))) b ,
    table(xmlsequence(extract(value(b),'/Histogram/Row'))) c, table(xmlsequence(extract(value(c),'/Row/Column'))) d
The explain plan from a tkprof looks like this:
    Rows Row Source Operation
    1 SORT AGGREGATE (cr=1586294 r=27724 w=0 time=334399181 us)
    761020 NESTED LOOPS (cr=1586294 r=27724 w=0 time=6285597846 us)
    209395 NESTED LOOPS (cr=1586294 r=27724 w=0 time=1294406875 us)
    16864 NESTED LOOPS (cr=1586294 r=27724 w=0 time=188247898 us)
    544 TABLE ACCESS FULL OBJ#(26985) (cr=1993 r=548 w=0 time=171380 us)
    16864 COLLECTION ITERATOR PICKLER FETCH (cr=0 r=0 w=0 time=82831582 us)
    209395 COLLECTION ITERATOR PICKLER FETCH (cr=0 r=0 w=0 time=939691917 us)
    761020 COLLECTION ITERATOR PICKLER FETCH (cr=0 r=0 w=0 time=3399611143 us)
I noticed the following statemnt in a previous thread:
"Indexing is not the answer here... The problem is the storage model. You are current storing all of the collections as serialized lobs. This means that all manipluation of the collection is done in memory. We need to store the collections as nested tables to get peformant queries on them. You do this by using the store VARRAY as table clause to control which collections are stored as nested tables. "
Could this be the problem? How do I tell which storage model we are using.
    Thanks ,

  • Apex Pages and tool based on it is very slow

    Hi All,
I am using Apex 3.2 with Oracle 11g and facing lot of performance issues.
Presently a tool built on Apex has become very slow. We checked from PL/SQL point of view everything seems to be fine.
Mainly we face issue when trying to select Data from Apex collection. This we are facing for last 3-4 weeks. Earlier it was good.
    Details of the application.
    We are using Dedicated Server
On an average we have 30-40 users
Tables from where data is being fetched is not so big.
All the tables are being analyzed on daily basis
The same application on other environment is working perfectly
Please suggest where shall I check to increase the performance.
    Thanks in Advance
