Video Card Enough?

I'm looking at purchasing the 24" iMac. However, I'm wondering if I will need the higher end graphics card. I don't intend to do any gaming on the system, but will definitely use Aperture, iMovie and more than likely Final Cut Express for home movies. Will the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO w/256MB card suffice or should I go for the updgrade? Thanks...

Aperture and iMovie, YES - The "low-end" choice is certainly good enough. Final Cut Express - It will not limit the software's capabilities in any way, but I'm sure Final Cut, whether Express or Pro, will benefit from having a better video card. Whether it makes a difference to you depends on what features you use and what you ask the software to do.
Upgrade the RAM to the maximum. That will have more impact than the video card. You can do it after market to save some money.

  • IMac 24" with 7600 video card - enough juice?

    Building out my shopping list and I will be editing HDV from either a Sony HDR-HC7 or a Canon HV-20.
    We are somewhat between the iMac 20/24" and other than the larger screen area, I felt the Nvidea 7600 would give some additional performance. It seems like a no-brainer upgrade the video card for the price on the 24"
    If I did the 20" then I would upgrade the video memory on the 1600 to 256MB.
    One of the main reasons for the iMac will be for my wife and kids to edit HDV in iMovie and FinalCut Express (if they re-initiate the $99 offer that was just removed ... yikes!).
    Just looking for some personal experiences.

    The iMac is a great machine, whether it's a 20" or a 24".
    My suggestions include:
    1) put at least 2GB RAM in it if you're serious about editing, esp. editing HDV,
    2) upgrade at least to the 500GB internal hard drive, believe me in the long run you will appreciate having it
    3) get yourself a good external firewire drive. I'm partial to the Lacie d2 Extreme drives, the 320GB model is currently $140 at newegg.com. Granite Digital & Weibetech also come highly recommended for video. Look for drives that support FW400 & FW800, 7200rpm, 8MB cache or more.

  • IBook G4...Video Card good enough?

    On the 14" iBook, is the ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 with 32MB of dedicated DDR SDRAM good enough to be handle Photoshop CS2, and other high-end graphics software? I'm looking at getting an iBook for Graphics creation and other Media, but I'm not sure if the 32MB will be able to handle it. Can anyone help me out here?
    Also, Can I get the Video Card upgraded at a later date? Incase I buy it, realize I need a better card, can I go out and buy one or would I have to get a whole new system?

    As long as you are talking about 2D graphics which photoshop, illustrator, etc. are designed to handle, 32 MB of Vram is plenty. Even 8 MB of Vram would do the job. I have been working for years with photoshop on a power Mac 7600 with 6 MB of Vram.
    3D graphics call for a lot of Vram, especially in up to date games. The latest iBook graphics card also supports core image technology.

    Is this video card sufficient to drive a single monitor for video editing and basic graphics work in PhotoShop, etc?

    Hey guys! I'm going to post my specs first so that you get a good idea of what I'm running on:
    MSI Neo2 LS 865PE.....MAT=Slow
    Pentium4 2.4C.....FSB=233=2.8C hyperthreading enabled ~>1.55V
    Corsair TwinX 1gig PC3700.....memory on "AUTO" in BIOS with timings at 3,4,4,8 ~> 2.7V
    Radeon 9700NP.....stock speeds ~>1.7V
    AlienX case with 2 fan400 watt power supply and 6 case fans
    Zalman Alum/Copper heatsink fan
    1:I've had this motherboard for a few months now. I upgraded my video card from a nVidia Ti4200(128meg) to a Radeon 9800 a month ago, but I couldn't get it working at 8X AGP, no matter what voltages I threw at it. I returned it for a Radeon 9700NP hoping that it would work, but it still won't.
    I'm using BIOS 1.9 and since there is no option to select your AGP speed, I could only try using ATI's drivers. Once booted into Windows, there is a slider you can move to select you AGP speed. On my machine It says that It has performed some tests and has concluded that AGP 4x is the best for my system....but my system supports AGP 8X!
    I've moved the slider over to 8x (which requires a reboot) at least 5 times with each card but the slider refuses to move past 4xAGP after the reboot.
    2: My second problem: I had an old stick of KingMax PC3200 and decided to buy 3 more sticks. Unfortunatly, the 3 I bought did not match the one I had, so I only put 2 of the new sticks I bought into my system. Immediatly, My system would crash, lock up, files were corrupt, and I got PLENTY of blue screens of death with a long message containing: 0x0000007  with all these other numbers and "0"s. I did a search online and found out I had a hardware incompatibility problem. I never got this with my old stick of ram.
    I returned the 3 sticks of Ram and replaced them with the Corsair. Put my new Radeon 9700 in, formatted my hard drive....and within 24 hours, my system locked up 3 times, rebooted itself 5 times, and gave me the same BSOD as mentioned above with the same long message.  
    I didn't change anything except for the memory and the video card. I've been wanting to overclock, (thats why i bought the faster memory   ) but I'm not sure what to do at this point.
         I have my FSB at 233 but I'm scared to go any higher because of previous system instability at stock speeds. My RAM was running on 400 and MAT=Turbo with the most relaxed timings at 3,4,4,8.
    I've given myself hours of sleepless nights formatting when my system wouldnt boot into windows; overclocking....etc. I NEED HELP. PLEASE. PLEASE. Anything could work at this point.  
         I'm trying to get more info on how to run my system at a 5:4 ratio, also.  
    If anyone has problems like me or knows what could be the problem with my system, please reply to this post, it would help me a lot. I've been trying to fix these problems for a few months now so anything is greatly appreciated.  

    Thanks a lot to you guys that responded. I brought my computer home this past holiday and I want to let you know where I stand as of now. I guess this thread is like my blog for my computer. I want to clear some things before my first post makes everyone confused.
    1- I have only 2 sticks of memory in my system: the Corsair PC3700 TwinX 512x2
    I returned the 3 KingMax I bought, and still keep my old stick just in case.
    2- I am using the 400 watt power supply that came with the case. I read some reviews of the case and I know the reviewer did not have problems with the power supply. In my BIOS, there are some voltages it is weak on. Lets say: it it should be 5.00+, my power supply will be feeding it 4.96v or something like that, but I dont know, or think, that is a major problem...
    3- My computer will refuse to boot if memory speeds are set at anything below 400. SO....if I want to use a 5:4 ratio and have to set my memory speeds to "333" in BIOS, my system refuses to boot.
    4- This morning, I did manage to overclock my FSB to 250. Specs are as follow:
    Memory Timing @3,4,4,8,4.....speed set at "AUTO".....MAT at "SLOW"
    MY 2.4C's FSB was raised to 250 = 3.0gig  
    AGP/PCI frequency: 67.xx/3x.xx (cant go any lower)
    CPU voltage: 1.5500
    Memory voltage: 2.75
    Video Card voltage: 1.7
         Everything was fine for the whole day until I heard something click in my computer around midnight, and then seconds later, my computer froze and made a continuous beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. (you can imagine)
         This "click" and system crash has been plaguing me for months now. I dont know whay it happens. I was just using AIM when I heard the click and my heart stopped.
    My memory speeds have been set to "AUTO" even at the FSB of 250. But I don't know if this still means my system is at a 1:1 ratio. I know the BIOS then adjusts the memory to work at 500 if my FSB is 250...so I assume it is?    I love 3gig, but somehow I feel that 2.8 is faster, since the FSB=233 running parallel to my memory, also at 233
    A FSB of 250 is good enough for me, that's what I've been waiting 6 months for. If anyone knows how to set other ratios to achieve a FSB of 250+, please let me know, but as I said, my memory won't boot if its set at "333"

  • Fglrx not finding my video card

    vid card: ATI radeon X850XT on a x86_64
    Uncommonly enough i have some ati drivers that doesn't wanna do what i tell em to do. And it seem to be the fglrx module that cant find my card and then the fglrx(0) shows up and it seem like my dear X buddy is loading the vesa driver and thus i can't watch the one and only season of Firefly in a druuling 720p quality.
    Please help me see Firefly in 720p
    (and switch desktops without 2 secs delays etc etc (including to play a number of pc games))

    Ive tried telling my dear drivers where the graph card is by extracting the info from lspci and put in
    "PCI:5:0:0"
    But that doesn't seem to help (and 5:0:1 makes the X go bananas and refuse to start, but i have no idea why i have two of them pci busses occupied by me video card according to pciutils)
    Then i realize that the fglrx module probably do find the bus! Just not a device to match with it (that's what the log sais), so after some searching i found something about that maybe the device identifier wasn't created in the /dev dir (/dev/dri/<device identifier>) But of what i could list it actully where there under the name of card0 wich i assumed the card identifier had to be named aswell, but after changing that... no dice. And it seemes like the vesa driver finds the device .
    It is for me admitingly weird that when loading the vesa driver Ce X finds my card under /dev/dri/card0 But not from the begging with the "ati-driver"
    I reasently switched from debian, after switching from gentoo, after switching from ubuntu. And i remembered that the stable ati driver for the x850xt card didnt work with debians new kernel (!) so had to use the one from the test branch... But trying that here on arch (using the 8.12-2 driver) didnt work either. And unfortunally i cant find the info again on what driver the debian ppl had modified that did and did not work.
    It feels like there is some minor fault i myself overlooked the past 3 days, so hope that providing this information to you might make a  bell ring out there for someone.

    PS! hope i didnt confuse you to much, im abit confused by the log and the texts ive read, apparently fglrx is the ati module and catalyst is the driver, but you are sposed to put fglrx as driver in the xorg.conf so it must be the driver? And accorinding to the log it involves the fglrx eh... module when loading the vesa driver, or is the log just telling me that the fglrx module/driver has been disabled (fglrx(0)) and that they went on trying with the vesa driver/module instead?

    In order to be viewed on the iPhone, YouTube is transcoding all their content to H.264. The initial announcement said- They'll have 10,000 videos ready by June 29th, and should complete transcoding the collection by this fall.

    I would want it to be fanless (one of the main reasons I'm focusing on the GT 430) and not bigger in height than these posted, and preferably made by Asus or some other good brand.
    At the time I have an onboard Intel GMA X4500HD (which uses my Ram; I have 6GB - and I have an Core2Duo 3GHz 6MB Cache), but I'm having trouble moving various layers at the same time (this file I'm working on for instance weighs 30MB and has "many" layers and folders, but nearly no images; it's all text and vector shapes, and some Smart Objects).
    When I move 3/4/5 folders (with layers in it) at the same time it drags quite a lot. Would this have to do with the graphics card? It's the only reason I could think of, because the processor is quite powerful, I have more than enough Ram (ddr3), and I even have a scratch disc that is not the main Hd.

    PD: I'm working on Windows 7 64bit

    I opened a file I have with a lot of layers grouped into a number of groups, and many of the layers have effects.  A relatively complex document.
    When I select a whole bunch of the groups then use the move tool, yes, I see the screen update response slow down.  In my case, with a fairly powerful workstation and a decent video card it updated the screen about twice a second - a bit laggy but still quite acceptable.  I guess that's to be expected as the previews have to be made up of the combination of a huge number of pixels from all those tens or hundreds of layers in various ways.
    Based on what I see, it's not hard to imagine including even more layers in a more complex document to cause things to slow down even more.  I guess one just has to be patient if working on a document that deep in layers.
    Note that there are settings in the Edit - Preferences - Performance dialog that optimize the History & Cache values for "Tall and Thin" documents, where "tall" means "lots of layers".  If you make changes there to experiment, remember to close and reopen Photoshop to test them.

  • Video Card - Repair or Replace?

    I have a Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5 with a Radeon X800 XT video card. The video card is making a very loud intermittent whining noise. I assume it is the fan on the video card making the noise. My question is whether to replace the video card or repair it.
    I noticed on Ebay that this video card still holds it's value at $200 - $300 while the video card in my new Mac Pro (Radeon X1900 XT) only has a value of $60-$80. Why is the X800 XT still so expensive?
    I also found on Ebay someone selling a brand new, authentic ATI fan (with heatsink) replacement for only $12. It looks exactly like the one on my current card. I'm just wondering if replacing the fan is an easy enough process that I could do it without messing it up and causing overheating issues or other problems. I have only once before worked with thermal paste and I wouldn't want to do it wrong. However, if it's pretty fool proof then I'll give it a go.
    To sum it up my questions are 1) Why is the X800 XT still so expensive and 2) should I replace the fan or look for a new AGP card.

    Because there are no real equals in terms of overall performance for AGP G5's.
    There are no new cards in production and the X800 was and is, at the top of the A list.
    Even a close option like the Geforce 6800 Ultra also demands higher prices.

  • Video Card Compatibility

    Hi,
    I am trying to add a new MSI video card to my Envy H8-1414 desktop. This is the card:

    When I add the card with the OEM PSU, I get 6 long beeps. I added a 550 W PSU and the beeps go away but I get no video. I contacted MSI and they say that the power is enough but that I need to check with HP to make sure the BIOS can support the card. I checked the HP support site and I don't see any BIOS updates for this machine.
    The card is PCI Express x16 3.0 and HP motherboard only says 2.0 so I'm wondering if it's just not compatible.
    Any ideas?

    Temoporarily remove the new video card. Connect your display to the appropriate onboard video out port at the rear of the PC.
    Enter the BIOS and go to the security tab. Click on Secure boot configuration.
    The next screen will look like the following image. press the F10 key to accept the change
    Verify that secure boot is set to disable. Press the F10 key. Exit the BIOS. Shutdown the PC and install the new video card. Connect the display connector to the appropriate video output port. Power on your PC

  • New video card - AMD or NVidia

    I've got a choice between nVidia Gt 640 with 4 GB or ram or the AMD 7850 with 2 GB. The nVidia cards are a bit cheaper, but I want to be sure they are good enough. The card that came with my PC won't run the oil paint filter and is causing problems in Photoshop. I need something more powerful. Which is a better buy, or are they similar? I do some video editing and also use filters like oil paint a lot. I want a video card that will speed things up a bit.

    I do not see anything in the Windows Task Managers user interface that show GPU performance or usage. Sysinternals Process explorer does plot usage of machine resources like CPU, GPU, Memory, I/O.  I don't know if Photoshop ever stresses a Display adapters GPU. Sure it uses it but I think a GPU can just do so much and how effective it is depend on what you doing.  For example if I use a mixer brush and one of the fancy new Fan thick wet brushes and rapidly start stroking. Photoshop performance lags way behind my brush strokes.  When I use a filter liquify and rapidly stroke Photoshop performance is instantaneous. Looking at the Process explorer. The GPU usage looks the same in both features.  I think Programs like Premier Pro would use GPU more heavier then Photoshop.  In Photoshop video rendering does not even seem to use the GPU.

    I have the TWO VIDEO CARDS AND CAN'T RUN VIDEO WITHOUT IT GETTING STUTTERING VIDEO. LOOKS LIKE NOT ENOUGH MEMORY. WITH JUST THE 4500 ATTACHED TO 2 30 INCH APPLE MONITORS I WOULD GET A HORIZONTAL LINE ABOUT 1/3 FROM THE TOP OF THE SCREEN. SWITCH DVI'S AND IT APPEARS ON THE OTHER MONOTOR, SO ITS NOT THE MONITORS. I HAVE ONLY APPLE SOFTWARE ONE THE 07 MACPRO WITH 6GIGS OF DRAM AND TWO HARD DRIVES 500 GIGS AND 750 GIGS and one 750 external Seagate hard drive.

    Sorry, didn't realize till later,I wasn't looking. No they never worked together. Actually I first had a nVidia GeForce 7300 GT from apple to go with the 4500, but it still sits in a box, was completely incompatible or pooched???. The Quadro 4500 always gave me a horizontal line when only two 30 inch Apple monitors were hooked up.Its been replaced a couple of times, still the horizontal line remains. Recently I acquired the X1900 thinking the dual dvi output could run one more 30 incher and one single link out to my 55 inch plasma(a dream I once had). I can get slideshows from Aperture to run, but no full screen video. It slugs along skipping every few frames. My 2 year nightmare continues. Thanks for your inquiry though maybe you know what is or should I say isn't happening. This is my second computer since my Commodore Vic-20.   • [Solved] Well-supported and powerful video card?

    I'm sick of dealing with Catalyst updates breaking my system and crashing Starcraft 2, so I'm thinking I'll buy a new card for my rig. I want to get something that'll work better and make my life easier.
    So I'm looking for a desktop (PCI-e) video card, probably nVidia, that can replace my current Radeon HD 5770. I'd like something relatively quiet and not too power-greedy (this PC is right next to my bed and on 24/7) but powerful enough to support my two monitors, play back 1080P h.264 easily, and do some occasional gaming, the most extreme of which would be SC2 in WINE (I don't need to max out the settings, but a good framerate with more-than-minimum settings would be nice.)
    My price range is flexible. Maybe around $200, preferably less, but I'd spend a bit more if it's justified.
    So: what are you guys using that's working well for you? Anyone have any recommendations on what card to buy?
    EDIT: I ended up getting a GTX 460. It's everything I wanted - quiet, powerful, good driver support. Well, I haven't confirmed yet that Starcraft 2 runs without crashing (as it had a habit of doing under my 5770) but at least it runs unlike under the most recent ATI drivers.

    My card (the aforementioned GTX 460) arrived. I installed it today with no hitches. Everything worked great except it took me a couple tries to get Starcraft 2 to run (it initially crashed because it couldn't resize my Twinview desktop). I fixed it by creating a Metamode in the nvidia-settings utility where I turned my secondary monitor to "Off". Just switch metamodes, open SC2, and switch metamodes again when done. I may come up with an even simpler solution eventually, but in general, I'm super-happy with how effortless it was getting everything installed, set up, and configured.
    And as to the comments on the size of the card - this card is not small at 9.5" or something, but that's comparable to the 5770 I had before and like I said, my case is HUGE. I had like 6 inches to spare behind the card. XD That said, people with ordinary cases probably should measure.

  • Is there a fix for MAC Pro with Dual video cards that randomly logs off and on?

    From my readings on the Internet this seems to be a know problem.  That even furthers my frustrations with the latest OS X upgrades.  So far on both my MACBOOK PRO and my MAC PRO it has been a major downgrade as both systems are no longer stable.  Enough with my complaints...

    Does anyone have work around to use dual screen monitors with the system?  I have two video cards, the article says to remove one.  Has this worked for anyone?  Can I use dual screens with the one video card.  Before I go messing around with these type of things I just want to be sure that this is a real fix.  For the price of the cards and the system I really can't believe apple has this issue in the first place and has not fixed it. 

    Self-hosted add-ons have to be fixed for every new version of Firefox. Two to 6 months for updating an add-on is ridiculous for a program which has a new version release every '''6 weeks'''. If that extension was hosted at the official Add-ons website, Mozilla would take take care of "bumping" that extension, as long as it keeps working, for every new version of Firefox, as the new version is released.

  • Resetting a video card?  (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT)

    So here's my issue. I am trying to connect a secondary monitor to my mac pro (10.5.8). The card in the machine is a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT. The only port that seems to work on the card is "#2" (or the left port while looking at the card from the back of the machine).
    Both monitors work when plugged into #2 so I know the problem is not with the monitors/cables. This leads me to believe the card has some issues. I used a secondary screen on this machine about a month ago and had no problems. Not to say the card isn't bad, but is there any way to reset this card or flush out some sort of cash/preference to see if that works?
    I have done the obvious "Detect Displays", and have flushed the PRAM of the machine, I've tried booting it up with no screens, just one screen, etc. I've tried booting with one screen hooked up to port #1 and it never get any signal so I'm thinking it's a dead port unless I can somehow "refresh" this. System Profiler just shows whichever screen is connected to port #2 and "No display connected" for whatever is in port #1
    Any ideas? I've done just about everything I can think of. I tried installing the firmware update too for the card, but on trying to do so it said that I couldn't because I was already running the latest firmware.

    ok walter, we gonna help you no problem.  maybe try shutting down your mac pro and
    using some compressed air and clean that out, especially the  ATI Radeon  2600. Dust bunnies love the video cards. then restart, open up disk utility and repair permissions
    if you can. If not,  then yes, your video card is probably dying. Go to the Apple at the corner of your screen and click on "About this Mac" and it should tell you what kind of Mac Pro you have. As far as I know the ATI 5770 would be a good replacement for your ATI 2600. Apparently they were known to collect dust pretty easily, or so I was told. do you have Applecare? otherwise, I think it's gonna be around $300. Luckily installation isn't too hard. Oh, and you're probably going to need to have 10.6 already installed on your Mac Pro, I think
