View files at true screen size?

Hello...
I have been creating a simple web banner in Indesign. Indesign's 100% view is shown on the left. But then when I double checked the exported jpg in Photoshop, it appeared significantly smaller at 100%. I'm guessing this is the true representation of the image because when opening it in a web browser, it was the same size as the Photoshop view.
I'd prefer to create the original file in Indesign if possible because there's greater control; is there a setting or preference I'm missing somewhere to get my working file to appear at the true screen size, so I can see it accurately as I work?

ID CS6 and later changes the zoom scale so 100% now displays as actual print size. ID gets your screen resolution from the system to accurately display the print size. Double-clicking the Zoom tool in CS6 and CC gives you the 1:1 ratio. Unfortunately in CC2014 the zoom double-click no longer works.
There is a hidden preference which is only accessible via scripting so this AppleScript will set the zoom percentage to a 1:1 ratio (Photshop's 100%). Paste this text into Applescript Editor, Compile and save into your ID script's folder. You can assign the script a key command:
tell application "Adobe InDesign CC 2014"
    set x to main monitor ppi of general preferences
    set zoom percentage of active window to (72 / x) * 100
end tell
You can also change the behavior to pre CS6 where 100% equals 1:1. This compiled script will toggle the behavior, but I prefer the above:

  • How to display at true actual size (Mac)

    The background: InDesign was unable to display work at true actual size until CS6 came along. (So that 1 inch on the screen rulers equals 1 inch on a physical ruler.) Unfortunately, CS6 still doesn't get it right if your display is set to something other than its native resolution. For example, if I set my 27" NEC SpectraView display to "Best for Display" in the Displays system preference panel, then viewing at "Actual Size" in Indesign CS6 achieves true actual size. But that resolution is way too high, making the features of the user interface way too small. The comfortable display resolution is "scaled" to 1920x1080, which provides a nice 2-page layout viewing area (at true actual size) plus a comfortable user interface. However, InDesign CS6 ignores this and continues to draw the "Actual Size" view based on "best for display" resolution, and that results in a greatly shrunken image. Acrobat Pro has gotten this right for several versions now, but it is apparent from this and other CS shortcomings that the different product groups at Adobe aren't very good at what Samsung does and fail to copy each other's work.
    The solution to achieving "true actual size" is a script written by Dave Saunders (and probably others) some time ago:
    //by Dave Saunders. Replace the percentage number with the correct value for your screen
    app.layoutWindows[0].zoomPercentage = 113;
    If you're like me and don't really use scripts, here is what to do with it on a Mac (with apologies to Dave and other experts who know a helluva lot more about this than I do):
    1. Copy the text for the script and paste it into the blank window that opens when you start ExtendScript Toolkit CS6 (in Applications>Utilities>Adobe Utilities - CS6). Leave it open.
    2. Go to Acrobat Pro>Preferences>Page Display and under Resolution note the number associated with "Use system setting". (On my system it is 81 pixels/inch.) I also suggest enabling that setting if it isn't, so that Acrobat also displays at true actual size.
    3. Divide the number from Acrobat by 72, then multiply by 100. (This is essentially a percentage calculation of system resolution over the conversion value of 72 points/inch, which produces 112.5 in my example. I round it to 113.)
    4. In the open script, change the number to what you got from the above result (113 in my example).
    5. Save the script with a name such as "True actual size.jsx" and leave it on the Desktop where you can get it at later for dragging.
    6. In InDesign, go to Window>Utilities>Scripts, then right click on User and choose Reveal in Finder. Drag your script into the User folder. (I recommend option-dragging it to leave the original on your Desktop for archiving.)
    7. Test the script in an open InDesign document by double clicking on the script. The display should now show your work at true actual size.
    8. The scripts window is awkward at best, so the last step is to assign a keyboard shortcut to your script. I use Control-1. Go to Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts… and choose Scripts. Scroll down to the bottom, where you should see your script listed. Highlight it and enter Control-1 (or whatever you prefer) into the New Shortcut window and click Assign. Then click Save. You won't be allowed to modify the Default set, but I was fine with "Default copy".
    Now whenever you want to view your work at true actual size, just hit Control-1 (or whatever you chose for a keyboard shortcut).
    You might want to copy these instructions into a TextEdit file and put it with your script file in a folder that you can find when the time comes to upgrade to CS7, because I'll lay odds that you're going to need to achieve true actual size all over again.
    Lastly and far from least, thank you for the script, Dave! If you or other pros come across this and see corrections or improvements, please set me straight.

  • Creating app for multiple screen sizes?

    Hello.  I've recently created an .apk file from Flash Professional using AS3 (probably obvious in this forum, but I wanted to be clear).  I've been testing it on an ASUS Android tablet.  However, I realized that even if I get the app to look fine on this tablet, there are other tablets out there with many different sizes that could have the app look weird.
    I've been searching Google for tips on this, but a lot of it doesn't make sense.  Is there a pretty easy way to get your app to 'read' the tablet's dimensions and scale itself to those dimensions?  I know I could make a different file for each screen size, but wouldn't that require putting several different app files in the app store?  That seems silly.  Any tips?

    first, you should check the scaleMode property of the stage which will allow you to specify how your stage is sized to fit the display.
    then, you can use the stage's stageWidth and stageHeight properties to size and position your display elements, if that's needed (because with showall you probably won't need to do any sizing/positioning).

  • Example program forces front panel screen size

    I am somewhat of a novice at LabView programming.  I used an example program as the starting point.  I expanded the front panel, added buttons and displays, and added code to do additional things.  But when the program gets to the example code, it forces the front panel screen down to its original (example) size.  The help messages talk about going to File > VI properties > screen size but none of the settings solve the problem.  The code that I wrote starts with a full screen front panel and runs fine until the program gets to the example code then the front panel shrinks.  There must be something in that portion of the code that is setting the properties.  Anyone know what is happening?

    Hi Gary,
    Anyone know what is happening?
    You already answered that on your own:
    There must be something in that portion of the code that is setting the properties.
    All you have to do is find that part of code!
    Start searching using breakpoints and step-by-step execution (aka basic debugging techniques)…

  • Enlarge default screen size of opened photo files

    When I drag a photo file to Photoshop, it opens in a size significantly smaller than the workspace. (This is especially true with vertical [portrait] photos.) Therefore, every time I open a photo (and I do this typically hundreds of times a day...), I have to drag the lower right corner way out to enlarge the frame, and then I have to scroll the mouse wheel to make the picture expand to (approximately) fill the frame. Only then can I see it well enough to make the required ajustments to the file. Isn't there a way to tell Photoshop how large I want the photos to appear in the workspace, so it opens every new photo file to the same size?
    I am using Photoshop CS (not CS2 or CS3).
    Thank you for your help!
    Vincent

    Vincent,
    As Norbert says, Ctrl+0 makes the image fill the screen.  That's the same as going to the View menu and selecting "Fit on Screen."
    Here's a slick little trick that I think I read about on the forum some time ago.  (I doubt I figured it out myself.)  You can use the PS Script function to automatically size an image to Fit on Screen whenever a new image is opened.  Here's what to do:
    Create an action that has Ctrl+0 in it.  To do this, open an image, start recording an action and click View>Fit on Screen, then stop the action.  Name the action something like "Fit on Screen."
    Go to the File menu and select Scripts > Scripts Events Manager.
    Click the little checkbox at the top to enable scripts to run.
    In Photoshop Event, select Open Document.
    Click the radio button for Action.   Navigate to your new Fit on Screen action.  Click the Add button.  You should now see your script in the white box under the checkbox at the top of the dialog box.  Click Done.  That's it.
    Now, when you open a file, it will open in the size you would get if you manually pressed Ctrl+0 or View > Fit to Screen.
    If you like how changing the screen mode looks -- with an image open press the F key 2-3 times -- you could always add that to your action so you image will open large and in the mode you like best.
    Hope this helps.

  • Viewing File Size in Finder

    Is it possible to include file size as one of the columns in any of the finder views?
    I've created a smart search for files above a specific size, but would like to view the actual size in the Finder window. Was easy to add additional attribute columns in Windows Explorer, by just right-clicking.

  • Is there a way to enlarge the overall screen size in a macbook air for easier viewing

    Is there a way to enlarge the the icons/text, etc. on a macbook air for easier viewing without changing the screen resolution?

    not really apart from changing the resolution, but theres a a couple of things you can do
    you can change the "minimum font size" in Safari (and other apps) in the General tab - this will enlarge any fonts to the minimum size you specify if they are under that size
    the features in the accessiblilty section of system preferences might be worth a look as well
    the pinch zoom feature is also useful
    unfortunately there isn't a 1-button setting somewhere that can do this, because apps, documents, web pages, images etc all work independently from each other, they use different font types, different zoom levels, etc. You can't just enlarge them all in sync without content getting jumbled up/distorted. if enlarge an app/page/document and get it looking good, on the next one you would probably need to zoom in at a different level for it to look right

  • What are "average" screen sizes, resolutions etc. for viewing websites?

    This may be the wrong forum but -
    All screen sizes vary, all browser outputs vary, and all individual preferences for browsers are subjective.
    Having stated the obvious, can anyone offer guidance on the best 'common denominator' settings/set-up procedure on starting out on a web design so that the best 'average' viewing and reading is achieved? A tough one!
    I now have an iMac 24" set high on 1920 x 1200 and my current website looks fine. But now I'm told 800 x 600 is still a fairly common screen resolution worldwide, and viewed on this my pics and texts are elephantine, need scrolling mercilessly, and are.....
    just plain ugly!

    I think it really depends on your audience. If your audience is ALL, then you'd probably better stick to 640x480 I'm sure there's a few still out there!
    If your audience is "recent/new computer users, you could be safe designing for 1024x768. If you just want a good sized swath of users with computers of a decent capability, then some of iWeb's pages (several of the default themes fit well within 800x600) are good for this, leaving plenty of room for dragging items to the desktop and accounting for scroll bars

  • How to view file size of imported photo

    i plan to import a number of large photos from iphoto. i hesitate because each photo is between 20 and 50 MB. Will iweb scale this file down while importing? How can i find out about it? I did not find file information on the imported photo nor do i know the file location of the website project on my mac harddisk.
    Do I have to use third party software like Photoshop to scale the size down and afterwards import them into iphoto and iweb?
    Thank You,
    Harpo

    I think you should DEFINITELY scale your images down before importing them or dragging and dropping them into iWeb! If your images are in iPhoto, then you can use the "Export" command in iPhoto to export your images and specify what resolution they should be scaled to.
    One of the issues I have with the iPhoto export function is that you have no control over the amount of JPG compression in the exported photos, which has a direct relationship to the resulting file size. So I like to use a program called "Downsize" http://www.stuntsoftware.com/Downsize/ which will allow you to specify maximum image dimensions as well as JPG compression. You will also then be able to check how large the resulting files are in the Finder before using them in iWeb.
    Whenever you are scaling photos for use in iWeb, it's important to realize that any additional changes that you make to the photos in iWeb will cause the image to be converted from jpg to png. This may impinge on your ability to control the filesizes directly. The way to get around this is to scale your photos to exactly the size you want and then after dragging them into iWeb, click on the "Use original size" button in the Inspector Metrics tab. Also, don't apply any other effects to your images like rotation, frames, drop shadows... If you want these, you should do these in external applications as well. These are my recommendations only if you want to have complete control over your filesizes. It's certainly not required.
    But as far as your 50mb images go, definitely scale them down before bringing them into iWeb. Otherwise, iWeb will rescale the images for you, but it will ALSO throw a copy of your 50mb file into your Domain file to refer to in publishing. This would cause your Domain file to balloon in size quite rapidly. To put things into perspective for you on this, the Domain file for my entire site is only 80mb.

  • Is there a way to change settings for "date modified" to reflect true file changes instead of changing upon viewing files? This is not just a Word issue.

    My team and I open and view files all the time without editing them but the date modified changes anyway. This gets especially troublesome when we are working on files on each others desktops remotely. Is there any way to change these settings to reflect only changes instead of views, moves, and the like? I've read similar posts that have all reference Microsoft products but that is not the case. Our systems here operate in this way regardless of application/file type.

  • The screen size is too small on the webpage created by QTSS publisher

    Hello,
    I published a video file using QTSS publisher.
    I'm using "Publish media to Quick Time Streaming Server (instant-on) and Webpage action "Auto-play in Web page".
    The screen size is fine when playing via the streaming link but when I create an actual webpage using QTSS publisher and dropping the movie file to that webpage, the screen size is extremely small while playing. Is there a way to make the playing screen size bigger in the webpage?
    The html looks like this:

  • Best practice for setting or detecting screen size?

    Hi All,
    Trying to determine a best practice for setting or detecting the screen size. For playbook and iOS, I can set them. But for Android, the number of devices is too large so I'd rather detect. My first choice is to use the stage.stageHeight and stage.stageWidth. This works fine if I set my stage properties with standard meta data:
    [SWF(height="320", width="480", frameRate="64", backgroundColor="#010101")]
    However, if I use the application descriptor file to set the stage dimentions (as suggested by Christian Cantrell here http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/authoring_for_multiple_screen_sizes.html)
    <initialWindow>
    <aspectRatio>landscape</aspectRatio>
    <autoOrients>false</autoOrients>
    <width>320</width>
    <height>480</height>
    <fullScreen>true</fullScreen>
    </initialWindow>
    Then the stage.stageHeight and stage.stageWidth are not the correct numbers when my main class is added to the stage. Sometime after the main class is added to the stage, then those numbers are fine. Is there an event I can wait for to know that the stage.stageHeight and stage.stageWidth are correct?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Lee,
    Thanks for the quick response! However, for some reason the heightPercent & widthPercent metadata tags are not working as expected for me.
    I have a wrapper class that I target for compiling, WagErgApplePhone.as where I've got my metadata
    [SWF(heightPercent="100%", widthPercent="100%", frameRate="64", backgroundColor="#010101")]
    sets some stage properties
    stage.quality=StageQuality.LOW;
    stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE;
    stage.align = StageAlign.TOP_LEFT;
    and instantiates my main class
    var main:Main = new Main();
    addChild(main);
    my main class constructor even waits for the stage
    public function Main(){
    if (stage) init();
    else addEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE, init);
    in my init function, stage.stageHeight traces out as 375 (expecting 320).
    i have a function which is called via a button press event by the user, and stage.stageHeight traces out correctly (320) there. that's what makes me think that if i wait long enough, i can get the correct stageHeight before init/drawing. but i'm not sure what event to listen for, or if there's another trick.
    if i use Capabilities.screenResolutionX and Capabilities.screenResolutionY the correct values are provided for mobile, but these values are not useful for the desktop and web version of the app. if there's no other solution, i'll execute different code depending on platform.
    again, for reference, my app descriptor:
    <initialWindow>
    <aspectRatio>landscape</aspectRatio>
    <autoOrients>false</autoOrients>
    <width>320</width>
    <height>480</height>
    <content>bin-iOS/WagErgApplePhone.swf</content>
    <title>WAG ERG</title>
    <fullScreen>true</fullScreen>
    <renderMode>cpu</renderMode>
    </initialWindow>
    looking forward to any other ideas to try out & thanks so much for your thoughts! if you want to really dig in, this is an opensource project at code.google.com/p/wag-erg/

  • ! when trying to view photos in full-screen

    Hi,
    Hopefully someone will be able to help me with this.
    When I try and view some photos in full-view a grey box with an exclamation mark in a grey box appears. I've managed to locate the original photo files in the correct place in my iPhotos folder on my hard drive. I can see my photos on the standard format in iPhoto and when I first imported them I could see them in full-view. I haven't modified any of them, the only thing I've done is upload them onto facebook!!
    I've checked and I've got the latest version of my iPhoto.
    I'm not sure what to do next! Hope you can help,
    Anna xx

    Yeah I renamed a folder in my iPhoto Library Folder and these are the photos I can't see.
    *It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss*
    If I rebuild the database will it solve my problem
    No it won't.
    Your options now are two:
    1. Return things in the iPhoto Library Folder to exactly the way they were
    or
    2. Create and populate a new library.
    To create and populate a new library:
    Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
    Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
    Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
    Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
    When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
    In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Most people who rename things in the iPhoto Library Folder do so because they believe it will make finding pics easier. However: There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.
    Regards
    TD

    it doesn't show the file names.
    This is my code, again: i dont know what could possibly be.
    <?php # Script 12.9 - view_files.php
    // This page displays the files uploaded to the server.
    // Set the page title and include the HTML header.
    $page_title = 'View Files';
    include ('./includes/header.html');
    require_once ('mysql_connect.php'); // Connect to the
    database.
    $first = TRUE; // Initialize the variable.
    // Query the database.
    $query = "SELECT upload_id, file_name, ROUND(file_size/1024)
    AS fs, description, DATE_FORMAT(date_entered, '%M %e, %Y') AS d
    FROM uploads ORDER BY date_entered DESC";
    $result = mysql_query($query) or die(mysql_error());
    // Display all the URLs.
    while($row = mysql_fetch_array ($result, MYSQL_ASSOC)) {
    // If this is the first record, create the table header.
    if ($first) {
    echo '<table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="3"
    cellpadding="3" align="center">
    <tr>
    <td align="left" width="20%"><font size="+1">File
    Name</font></td>
    <td align="left" width="40%"><font
    size="+1">Description</font></td>
    <td align="center" width="20%"><font
    size="+1">File Size</font></td>
    <td align="left" width="20%"><font
    size="+1">Upload Date</font></td>
    </tr>';
    $first = FALSE; // One record has been returned.
    } // End of $first IF.
    // Display each record.
    echo " <tr>
    <td align=\"left\"><a
    href=\"download_file.php?uid={$row['upload_id']}\">{$row['file_name']}</a></td>
    <td align=\"left\">" .
    stripslashes($row['description']) . "</td>
    <td align\"center\">{$row['fs']}kb</td>
    <td align=\"left\">{$row['d']}</td>
    </tr>\n";
    } // End of while loop.
    // If no records were displayed...
    if ($first) {
    echo '<div align="center">There are currently no files
    to be viewed.</div>';
    } else {
    echo '</table>'; // Close the table.
    mysql_close(); // Close the database connection.
    include ('./includes/footer.html');
    ?>
    thanks so much for all the help support

    Hi Luis,
    If I may chime in and make a quick suggestion, Luis., mind
    you? Por favor?
    I didn't realize the content of your site is aimed for
    specific adult audience. Please try to keep that in mind, for those
    who are not familiar with your site, as I discovered just now and
    didn't know... so be sure to make a note of it, so participants
    will know right away or it might offend some of them, or not. It
    somewhat offends me, but no big deal.
    It would be nice if there is a simple warning or such
    acknowledgement specifically intends for adult audience or
    something. you know better than me or others.
    Thanks and have a good one, Luis.
