VLAN Assignment of SSID using Cisco AV Pair or Dot1x ?

Hi.
I am looking to setup wireless access to 2 of my internal VLANs. I am using Cisco 1130AG, PEAP and RADIUS for the authentication as one network is for employees only and one restricted to guests only.
I was wondering which was the most recommended solution.
1. To have 2 SSIDs, with one in each VLAN with the access restricted using the Cisco AV Pair attribute in RADIUS
or
2. Use one SSID and use Dot1x and the Tunnel attribute to assign the VLAN?
This option I feel is more complicated and I am still unsure how this works in reality as the SSID itself can only be part of one VLAN????
Do I have to configure a Dot11Radio and Fastethernet interface for each intended vlan in this case?
Could someone please explain and suggest their preferred option.
Thanks.

You should have two ssid's one for your internal and one for guest. You should use 802.1x for your internal and your guest should be open with a Login page of some sort. You can still use dynamic vlan assignments so that your internal users who try to access the guest page will be put on the internal vlan. Of course the guest will always be placed on the guest vlan. If you have a WLC, the login page and setup is easier, because in autonomous you will have to use something like ZoneCD for guest if you want a HotSpot type wifi.

  • VLAN assignment without ACS on Cisco Wireless Controller 5508

I was wondering if it is possible to do dynamic VLAN assignment on the Cisco Wireless Controller 5508 without using Cisco ACS but use Microsoft NPS server instead?  Is there a manual or article that someone can point me in the right direction?
    Thank you!

Any RADIUS server will allow you to do the dynamic vlan assignment if you configure the right RADIUS attributes (64, 65 and 81 that Steve mentioned above).
This doc shows example of dynamic vlan assignment with WLC and ACS.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml
Same config on WLC is needed. However, on the RADIUS you need to configure the same attributes on the NPS instead.

  • Dynamic VLAN Assignment + NPS

    Hello,
I'm planning a deployment with the following:
    5508 WLC running 7.0.222.0
    NCS 1.0.2.29
    50+ 3502i AP's
    Windows 2008 R2 running NPS
    EAP-TLS for authentication
The end goal is to have a single SSID and utilize NPS to dynamically assign VLAN's depending on role/group.
I've read several documents that use ACS to complete the dynamic VLAN assignment (inclduing http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml), however in this case ACS is not available.
My question basically is; do I need ACS to apply the VSA for Cisco Airespace, or can this be done solely with the following IETF attributes using Microsoft NPS and AAA override on the WLC?
    [64] Tunnel-Type
    [65] Tunnel-Medium-Type
    [81] Tunnel-Pvt-Group-ID
Any advice would be greatly appreicated!
    Thanks

Thanks Steve for your quick response.
I did everything as per your recommendation and it still doesnt work.
Do you mind providing me a remote assistance, do you have Skype?
Or your prefer that I provide you a set of logs, tell me which one and I will do so.

  • Cisco av-pairs SSID vs Dynamic Vlan Assignment

    Hello,
Once upon a time, there was a Cisco av-pairs attribute to allow a Wireless user to a given SSID through Radius servers.
If I'm not wrong, this feature has not been supported anymore (for several years) on WLC.
Dynamic vlan assignment is an alternative way to control user acces to a given vlan. It simplifies the architecture, because only one SSID is needed and the user traffic is then redirected to the right vlan. But... There is an important issue with it, since only one SSID (and BSSID) is used, broadcast packets from all vlans are transmitted to everybody. It is an issue when some services use broadcast to announce their features (IPv6 autoconf, Bonjour, and so on...).
So the question is if a working alternative to SSID av-pairs exists.
    Thanks.

To be honest, I have never heard of this SSID av-pair ever working in wireless:)
You would need at least two ssids and the radius server would need to ability to send a CoA to dissassociate the device so that the device would join the other SSID. The radius server would also have to push out the wireless profile to the client for the SSID they need to associate to. This can be done using Cisco ISE, but not Microsoft radius or even Cisco ACS.
You can still use aaa overuse to place devices on specific vlans and use the WLC to allow bonjour or  ACLs to filter what you don't want going out of the vlan.  WLC has bonjour capabilities and thus you can specify that on the interface and not on the WLAN.  If course their are limitations, but with newer requirements means that there is no one answer.  You might be able to meet certain requirements, but other you will have to sort of figure out.
    -Scott

  • Which command in the Cisco AP1200 series will you use to broadcast the SSID using VLANs?

    Folks,
Which command in the Cisco AP1200 series will you use to broadcast the SSID using VLANs?
    Thanks

If you have enabled mbssid, "guest-mode" would be replaced by "mbssid guest-mode" this would also allow multiple ssid's to be broadcast

  • Cisco WLC5508 Dynamic VLAN assignment error

    Hi All,
We have a HA (SSO) WLC controller pair in two DC's with the Management Interface managing the AP's. The AP's are located in the Campus LAN and the Campus and DC networks are seperated by a L3 boundary.
The plan is for one of the WLAN's to provide Dynamic VLAN Assignment via radius as a test I wanted to use the existing Management interface to bind to the WLAN, but since working through the following Document ID: 71683 one thing I noticed whilst working through the the document states that "it is required that the VLAN-ID configured under the IETF 81 (Tunnel-Private-Group-ID) field of the RADIUS server exist on the WLC"
If the above statement is true and we don't stretch VLAN's between the Campus LAN and the DC network due to the L3 boundary does this mean that Dynamic VLAN assignment won't be achievable?  When testing a client connection and debugging the result I receive the following:-

Would appreciate any guidance as to whether the Wireless Client VLAN's need to be interfaces on the WLC in order to work or whether the likes of Flexconnect could alleviate the L3 boundary?
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Mark

    Hi All,
After playing with Flexconnect I managed to get the dynamic vlan assignment working.
Need to create the Flexconnect Group add in the AP's to the gorup and then select the ACL Mapping tab > AAA VLAN-ACL mapping and added in the VLAN of my VLAN that my Tunnel-Group-ID (VLAN ID) had assigned to me.
Client connected and received the correct IP configuration.
    Thanks

  • 802.1X for wired environments using Radius/ACS for Dynamic Vlan Assignment

802.1X for wired environments  using Radius/ACS for Dynamic Vlan Assignment
Could someone please provide me with a simplest set of configuration steps to fire up Radius in ACS and 802.1X for dynamic vlan assignment. The objective is to roll out NAC L2 OOB using the 802.1X method for dymamic vlan assignments.
    If possible show:
    1. ACS/Radius Configurations.
    2. End User Switch Configurations
    Variables:
    Switch A
    MAC Address aaaa.bbbb.cccc     Vlan 10
                bbbb.cccc.dddd     Vlan 20
Also, if someone posts the Pros and Cons of using Radius/ACS/802.1X for Dynamic Vlan Assignments.
Other technology sets that can be used for Dynamic Vlan assignment EXCEPT from deprecated/obsolete VMPS.
    Thanks in advance. .

    Hi Guys,
Hmmm, well if your just looking for Mac based authentication the good news is that is very easy.  Just set create your Radius server, ACS, FreeRadius, Steelbelted radius etc.  Then create user with the name of the Mac address, in other words if the mac address is 0012.0021.1122 the the name would be 001200211122 and the password would be the mac address.  Then you set the vlan and tunnel stuff, like so tunnel-Type would be vlan, Tunnel-medium would be 802 and Tunnel-Private-Group-ID is the name of the vlan(not the vlan number)
So for the Cisco ACS 4.x you would create a user as specified above, fill in all the password boxes with MAC address, I believe the mac has to be all lower case in the name and the password.  Then check the Separate(Chap/MS-Chap/ARAP) box.  Then you pick the group the machine belongs to, the group is the part that defines what vlan it is on.
Before you create the user, create the group with info I wrote above and in addition specify the Service-Type as Authenticate Only.
Freeradius is a bit harder to configure the specifics and I am just now testing a freeradius server so I do not know the process for Machine authentication.
If, however, you are trying to authenticate a user that gets a bit trickier and is not so straight forward.

  • Using ACS for VLAN assignment

Hi Guys, I have been looking at the use of Cisco ACS server for VLAN assignment. So far I have searched through a number of threads and no found what I am looking for specifically so here it goes.
    1) When the RADIUS attributes have been configured in ACS (64, 65 + 81), and in my case I have them in the group configuration. For the VLANs to be assigned to the various users at their ports will every VLAN name in the RADIUS settings have to in the switches which are used for access?
    2) Is there a limit to the number of VLANs that can be assigned by the RADIUS(IETF) portion of ACS or would it be better to use RADIUS(IOS/PIX)? I am thinking of about 15 VLANS.
I am using a Catalyst 4500 (IOS supervisor) and 2950s and 2970s at the closets.
    Thanks for any help...
    Kelvin

Access Control Lists..I am thinking it is better to apply the ACLs at the closet (access) switches where I can specify the servers that should be reached by the hosts my test VLAN and deny those which they should not.
I used a named extended ACL for my tests however, it did not go well. With the ACL below applied I cannot reach anything including the server I actually want to reach. My intention was to allow the hosts in the test VLAN 172.16.12.0/24 to reach 2 particular servers and their gateway however with the list applied I cannot reach anything at all. The setup is one 2950 connected to a 4507 the 2 VLANs I am working with are trunked to the 2950 and dhcp is running. I have IP routing enable on the 4507 and it is the server for the VTP domain.
    ip access-list extended guest
    permit ip 172.16.12.0 255.255.255.0 host 172.16.12.1
    permit ip 172.16.12.0 255.255.255.0 host 172.16.2.254
    permit udp 172.16.12.0 255.255.255.0 host 172.16.2.245 eq 53
    deny ip any any
Any advice on how I can restrict the hosts which will be on this VLAN from accessing the rest of the network?

  • ZBF: Assign zone to interface via Cisco AV Pair

    Hello,
I am terminating ADSL connections via an L2TP tunnel from a service provider and have configured Cisco AV Pairs to assign incoming sessions into different VRFs based on the username of the remote router. I am also using Zone Based Firewall configuration and need to also assign the created virtual access interface into a zone in the same manner as I am assigning VRFs.
I am assigning VRFs like so:
    Cisco-AVpair+=ip:vrf-id=<vrf-name>
I have tried assigning a zone with the following configuration but with no luck:
    Cisco-AVpair+=ip:interface-config=zone-member security <zone-name>
    Cisco-AVpair+=lcp:interface-config=zone-member security <zone-name>
I have looked around but am unable to find a definitive list of Cisco AV Pairs to determine if there is one suitable specifically to assign a zone or a more generic AV Pair that can assign arbitrary configuration.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks.

For anyone else who has a similar issue, I raised the issue with Cisco TAC and the solution was to use a Cisco AVpair of
    lcp:interface-config=zone security <zonename>
    I also had to add:
    aaa policy interface-config allow-subinterface
Once I did this it worked a treat.

  • Problems with associating with SSIDs using non-native VLANs

    Hello
I have bought 2 Aironet 1300 that I intend to use as root-bridge and nonroot-bridge to a remote location. The plan is to have a trunk with 3-4 vlans.
From what I have understood the way to do trunking on these is to set up 1 vlan to 1 ssid, up to a total of 16 vlans/SSIDs.
I have now set up 2 vlans with one SSID each, with WEP encryption, and open/mac auth. 1 vlan is native.
And now to the problem. If I have both SSIDs, the nonroot bridge wont associate, getting the error: "Interface Dot11Radio0, cannot associate: Rcvd response from xxxx.xxxx.xxxx". If I remove the SSID with the native vlan, I get the same error. If I remove the ssid with the nonnative vlan (keep the ssid with the native vlan) they associate just fine.
So the question I am stuck on, is why wont it associate when i use SSIDs with non native vlans?

I have come across this problem once before, you have to set one of the SSID's as the infrastructure SSID - this is the SSID that the AP's will associate over.
Try setting one of them to the infrastrucuture SSID.
    "nfrastructure-ssid [optional]
(Optional) Designate the SSID as the SSID that other access points and workgroup bridges use to associate to this access point. If you do not designate an SSID as the infrastructure SSID, infrastructure devices can associate to the access point using any SSID. If you designate an SSID as the infrastructure SSID, infrastructure devices must associate to the access point using that SSID unless you also enter the optional keyword. " taken from:-

  • 802.1x dynamic vlan assignment using ACS 4.2

    Hi
we have 10 switches 2960 configured with 802.1x authentication against ACS server 4.2.
we have 2 vlans configured on the switches for administrator and endusers. the end user vlan id is 10 and the administartor vlan is is 100.
we need to apply the following scenario, if the enduser PC - that is connected to vlan 10 - has an issue and the administrator will login to the PC with the administrator account to fix that issue, the switch should dynamically reconfigure the port with the administrator vlan ( 100 ) .
is the above scenario doable using dot1x with the ACS server?

    Hi,
    I have the following scenario
    2 bulidings with multiple floor
Each floor should be in different VLAN.
The network should be authenticated with 802.1x and each switch port should be assigned with dynamic VLAN from ACS.
    Each
user should be able to connect and roam around between any building.
when ever a user is connecting his laptop to any floor, he should be
made part of that respective vlan. It is not requred to have the same
IP rage to be allocated, but the dynamic VLAN should be based on the

    Can
I configure ACS in such a way that, the ACS will allocate dynamic VLAN

Can I configure ACS in such a way that, the ACS will allocate dynamic VLAN for every 802.1x authentication  based on the Network Device Group. Please refer the attached diagram

    Hi,
    I have the following scenario
    2 bulidings with multiple floor
Each floor should be in different VLAN.
The network should be authenticated with 802.1x and each switch port should be assigned with dynamic VLAN from ACS.

  • Firewalling vlans on Catalyst 6500 by using Cisco ASA Firewalls

    Hello,
How to secure vlans on Catalyst 6500 by using Cisco ASA Firewalls?
There are no free modules on Catalyst 6500 to install a FWSM module.
What is the best configuration to secure vlans (~80 vlans) by using cisco ASA firewalls (context, hairpining...)?
    Thanks

    Hi Bro
Just to understand your question once again, you don't have anymore available slots in your present Cat6K, but you want to know how to secure your VLANs or SVIs that has been configured in your Cat6K?
If you were to ask me, I would not apply a bunch of ACLs in the Cat6K, for starters. You might wanna look into COPP (Control Plane Policing) instead. Furthermore you could also refer to this Cisco document http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_white_paper09186a00801b49a4.shtml
However, if you do have Cisco ASA FW appliance (not module, I presume from your question), you could enable ACLs, threat-detection feature, IP Audit features, reverse-path policing, capping of the embryonic values etc.
P/S: If you think this comment is useful, please do rate them nicely :-)

  • Dynamic VLAN-Assignment from RADIUS with Aironet 1242AG doesn't work properly

    Hello All,
our setting is to assign VLANs dynamically from RADIUS (freeradius) to Clients connected to the 1242 Access-Points with one SSID. We have Firmware
    12.4(10b)JA/JDA on the Aironet 1242.
The clients should be connected to one of three VLANs - one for staff, one for students and one for guests. I use the Web-Interface of
the 1242, because I'm not very familiar with IOS cli.
After assigning the first VLAN to the SSID -> click Accept, assigning the second VLAN to the SSID (overwriting the previous one) -> click Accept,
assigning the third VLAN to SSID (overwriting again) -> click Accept,  the assignment of VLANs works really fine,
(the only thing i change on the page is VLAN, the SSID is set to mandatory WPAv2)
    BUT...
when the 1242 is rebooted (due a building power off or similar) it doesn't work anymore. Clients end up in an endless authentication loop.
After doing the procedure again from above - assigning all VLANs sequently once, it works fine again !  till next reboot...
All VLANs have same encryption, cypher, TKIP+AES CCM. On the Cisco-Site I found a command, which i also tried with no success:
'aaa authorization network default group radius'.
I also tried to save the working config and load it into the 1242 again, this also did not work.
It seems that i'm doing something wrong, but what ?
    Thanks for some help,
    Frank

All you really need to do is make sure the subinterfaces/vlans are created for each VLAN you need, then have radius push down IETF attributes 64, 65, and 81.

  • Dynamic VLAN on Access Point using RADIUS

    Hi.
I am using a single Cisco 1130AG authenticating to RADIUS on Microsoft IAS (I do NOT have a WLC)
I was wondering is it possible to use one flat SSID in my network and then dynamically assign VLANs to users based on matching of RADIUS Policy and RADIUS Return attributes?
    I have configured the attributes on radius as per documentation;
    * IETF 64 (Tunnel Type)—Set this to VLAN.
    * IETF 65 (Tunnel Medium Type)—Set this to 802.
    * IETF 81 (Tunnel Private Group ID)—Set this to VLAN ID.
The returned VLAN ID exists on the Access Point and direct connection to the SSID without the return value works okay.
Each time I connect the VLAN just defaults to the native VLAN for the SSID
I think it may be impossible without WLC!
    HELP!!

From what I found when using MBSSID it appears you cannot use dynamic VLANs.
However you can use a single broadcasted SSID and various non-broadcast SSIDs with dynamic VLANs.
Ideally a single SSID and dynamic VLANs via dot1x would be fine for my setup.
However I have a specific wireless device which cannot use dot1x/EAP and therefore I need an second broadcast SSID to use for this. Which then causes the dynamic VLAN setup not to work.
