Want to improve Yosemite's UI?

I've been experimenting with a couple of ways to make the Yosemite UI less obnoxious. One thing that helps is to replace the default system font with something more legible. There are now a couple of ways to do this. Of course you try such things at your own risk, but the two I've tried have worked pretty well.
One involves an app called YosemiteRevert. Among other things, it will let you have Lucida Grande back. Big improvement, to my eyes.
Another approach is this one: http://www.thegraphicmac.com/change-os-x-yosemites-default-system-font. I just tried this one with my other Yosemite test drive, and it works as advertised.
Another solution is available that takes the same approach, but uses Source Sans instead of Fira Sans:
https://github.com/kemie/Source-Sans-Yosemite-System-Font-Replacement
And here is another: http://input.fontbureau.com/systemfont/
These three options just involve placing the fonts in /Library/Fonts, then logging out and logging back in. Reverting to Helvetica Neue is a matter of removing the replacement fonts from /Library/Fonts.

Yeah, I tried the "Reduce Transparency" option. While it makes most parts of the UI look better, it makes the dock look much worse. So right now I'm trying to see if I can put up with the pointless, annoying transparency. One way around its silly, legibility-reducing intrusiveness would be to never use anything other than a carefully chosen solid desktop background; but I keep my desktop uncluttered, and I want to use the desktop images that I have chosen. I don't have a problem with the contrast, although many people do. I suspect that it may be because I have a very nice monitor (NEC) that is calibrated regularly. I can easily imagine the grey-text-on-grey-background nonsense that you see in the App Store updates area being unreadable on a different monitor.

Are there ANY compatibility issues with Itunes 12.0.1 and Mavericks?  Don't want to download Yosemite.  Not hearing good things about it.  I'm on Mavericks 10.9.5.

one obstacle, quickly removed. thank you.
nomenclature aside for a moment, 10.6.8 is correct but maybe more is necessary about the MacBook Pro: it is 'old': Identifier: 1.2, Intel Core Duo, 2.16 GHz, 1 Processor, L2 2 MB, RAM 2 GB.
i hope that is enough to get an answer to this: is it unadvisable to update its OS; in other words, if i update to 10.9, will the machine be able to handle it, 'speedwise'?

  • I want rid of Yosemite but can't do it! (Bluetooth issue)

I should have heeded the warning signs! I've been running Yosemite since the end of October and, despite the fact that my well-used Macbook Pro is already five years old, it's made life frustratingly slow. But I took that as a sign that I needed to streamline my ageing Mac down, free up some space, get rid of unused apps etc (which never made any difference to how well the computer runs, btw). I recently got bought a wireless Bose speaker and am rather annoyed to find that Bluetooth doesn't work anymore. I'm pretty sure that happened when I installed Yosemite.
And the Bluetooth totally does not work. It's crossed out at the top of the screen, 'Bluetooth not available', doesn't show up in System Preferences; it's totally gone. Many hours last night were spent trying to fix this problem. I've reset the SMC, PRAM; just about every solution offered on the Apple forums for this problem, I've tried. Nothing works. So I thought it would be a good idea to just get rid of Yosemite once and for all.
I didn't have a backup of my previous version of Mavericks, but I found it on My Purchases page on the App Store. Only spent about 5 hours waiting for that to download, and then the dialog box casually informs me that 'This copy of the 'Install OS X' application is too old to be opened on this version of OS X'. GROAN!
What the heck can I do to get rid of Yosemite? I despise it, but am willing to upgrade to the next version if this problem will get fixed. How can I get my Bluetooth back without having to take it into a Mac store and probably pay the flat rate just to get this little niggle fixed? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In order to go 'backwards', you need to erase your hard drive - Macs have never supported going to an older OS version while the newer version is installed. So, once you have a bootable installer, boot from that, erase your drive and then install.
As you will lose all your files, make sure you have a good backup first.

  • How do I install Yosemite on a 2nd HDD I have added and have the Mac Pro boot from the new HDD?

My MacPro's HD seems to be failing. None of the tests I run indicate that, but I get constant spinning balls and everything takes a long time. I bought a 2nd HDD and installed it in the 2nd bayou my Early 2009 Mac Pro. I formatted it and want to install Yosemite and have the Mac boot off the new drive. It is currently running OS X 10.9.5. When I go to update to Yosemite it begins to download. Will it give me the option of which drive to install on? Or will it just upgrade the original Mac's HD?

    A Samsung 850 EVO 128GB SSD $75 now and makes a huge improvement. But get the 250GB which is $99. 500GB $199
Wish you asked us first   Awesome prices and performance.
Output from Etrecheck is an easy "quick check" of what your system is carrying around and what baggage it has.
Move data to a 'data and media library" drive.
Use CCC to skip the user data folders except ~/Library and clone to SSD
And might want to save the installer .ESD package for use as clean installer and to be able to boot from.

  • I want to pick your brains (again)...

Bill Gehrke and myself have a website for the Adobe community, especially for the Premiere Pro crowd and it is widely used, even on Adobe TV like Todd Kopriva did.
With the advent of CS6 we need to make major progress with that website as well. The current one http://ppbm5.com/index.html shows its age and we have clear ideas of where we want to go, as I will show below, but both of us are severely lacking the expertise to make it happen. So we are looking for website builders to help us out, but since this is a voluteer endeavor from our side, we don't have the funds to go to a commercial firm and pay huge amounts. We are in fact looking for sponsors who would be willing to help us for a nominal fee at max.
    This is what we want:
    First some background.
When I started out helping Bill it was with Excel and the spreadsheet used. When we grew out of that, I had to design the current website, without any experience with HTML, Dreamweaver, website building or anything related to that. Bill did not have that expertise either, so I invested a lot of time to learn the basics of HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and the like to get where we are now with our website, and I think not too bad a job with that. It works with the current website, but we want to make progress with the advent of CS6 and that is where my lack of expertise in webdesign is getting a serious burden to accomplish that without outside help. Of course you can buy that expertise on nearly every street corner, but since both Bill and I do this as unpaid volunteers, we have an in-born reluctance to spend money if it can be avoided. So we are looking for 'sponsors' to help us out.
What do we want to improve and why?
For simplicity this has to be separated into three parts, data submission, access to results and processing. I will try to explain this by going through each item in sequence.
    Data submission
The current data submission form lacks checks and balances. Every submission form has to be checked for inconsistencies or entry errors and unfortunately they are numerous. For instance, we ask for the rated capacity of a SINGLE disk in GB without the addition of the word GB or TB, but we get results like 931 instead of 1000, because people look at the formatted capacity instead of the rated capacity, or we get 6000 as the rated capacity in a 6 disk raid configuration, where the correct value should be 1000. Stuff like that requires me to check each and every entry, correct those data or ask for clarification. They also misspell Quadro into something like Quatro or Quodro or use only lower case 'gtx580' instead of 'GTX 580' with capitals and a space between the characters and number.
The idea I have, is to prevent this cumbersome error correction by using CPU-Z in our script to run in 'Ghost mode' and create a .HTML file that is attached automatically to the submission form. This can simplify the submission form and give us far more detailed, accurate and reliable data. It might even allow a user to submit his results directly into the database instead of me doing that for them. The consequence is of course that the MySQL database needs to be adjusted to allow user entries, but limited to final approval from Bill or myself. This boils down to being able to submit directly into the MySQL database, but with a provisional flag, so their results are not visible in the final results page until either Bill or I have approved them. Only after approval they will show up. Somewhat like entering a comment on some sites, that are entered but only shown after approval.
The second issue with the data submission is that I want to have the figures in the Output.txt file added automatically to the submitted form. I now have to add them manually, so this needs to be adjusted in the .php file that creates the submission results that are copied to the submitter, to Bill and myself.
    Access to results
Access to all pages is granted to everybody, with the exception of the results pages. Before you can access the results pages, you need to login with your mail address and password. If you have not registered, you have to register first with full name and similar data. There should be several levels of users, that are maintained in the MySQL database, something like this:
Level 1: Guest, limited access to pages and limited functionality.
Level 2: Registered, limited access to pages and 'somewhat' limited functionality. Still have to define that 'somewhat'.
Level 3: Subscriber, access to all pages and decent functionality, like we have currently on the PPBM5 site.
Level 4: Subscriber and donator, access to all pages and complete functionality.
Level 5: Administrator, full access to everything, limited to Bill and myself for the time being.
This requires a Login module, checking against the database entries and redirecting to either the results page or to the registration page.
But, this also entails a kind of web-shop approach, where registered users can buy a yearly subscription and pay the subscription fee by means of PayPal or credit card. After receipt of payment, the subscriber should receive an email confirmation of their purchase, including the start and ending date of their subscription, which will then become part of their data in the MySQL database. Two months before their subscription ends, they should automatically be sent an email reminding them to renew for a new year.
Maybe we have to consider even more subscription levels, like 'Bronze' @ $ 15, 'Silver' @ $ 25, 'Gold' @ $ 35 and 'Platinum' @ $ 35 plus Donation. Of course each higher level goes with increased functionality to make it worthwhile. We will have to figure this out, but I would be interested to hear your initial reaction about this approach.
If a user tries to access a page or performs an action, selecting, sorting, etc. to which his user level does not grant him access, a popup screen should warn him that he needs to buy additional subscription rights and direct him to the subscription page to do so. I can imagine this kind of stuff is more or less a standard approach for a web-shop, but I haven't the faintest idea how to accomplish this.
    Processing
The data form submitted, including the attached files, the .HTML file with the CPU-Z data from the 'Ghost' run and the Output.txt numbers, should be entered into the database and be kept in a 'pending approval' state until either Bill or I give them our OK, then they should be shown in the final results. This means that instead of me entering the data, the user will enter his data by pressing the 'Submit' button on the submission page. This requires modification to the .php code as well.
Depending on the user level, some pages may not be accessible as described above, but if the level is sufficient, there must be a way to select a record and by clicking a button, show all the CPU-Z details as when running your own system, but then for the selected system in a pop-up screen. If queries are made, the chart pages, Top 20, MPE Gain and BFTB chart, that are currently dynamic but based on all observations, must allow to 'drill down' to the same dynamic charts, but now based on the selected records only.
Example: Currently these charts are dynamically created from all 816 observations, but if you have selected only say 234 records in your query, the user must be allowed to drill down to similar charts, but now based only on the 234 selected records.
Third, for the BFTB chart, the hardware from the CPU-Z .HTML file must be compared to external price databases and CPU, mobo, memory, video card, raid controller, SSD's and HDD's must get the price information from these external databases and these figures need to be added to the MySQL database, but I can run that process every time the results are updated.
The user can then get dynamic BFTB info for the overall results, but again must be able to 'drill down' to get a dynamically created chart based on his selection. If the external databases no longer carry a product, because it was EOL, the old values must be maintained and not set to 0. To give you an example of a Dutch database with external data, look here: http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/
    Finally
It would be nice to create a blog where interesting hardware news will be published as far as it relates to NLE systems, somewhat akin to http://www.videoguys.com/Blog/ where users can also leave comments. Example new products/systems that ADK will add to their line up, like Gary did with my article http://www.videoguys.com/Blog/E/Planning+a+new+NLE+system+part+1/0xea83dda5e1137a11d5a49e d0f2fc97c1.aspx
That is all for now. Pretty easy to accomplish is you can spend several $ K. Nothing about this is rocket science, but for Bill and me it is just too much with our limited experience and expertise. The second factor is of course money. This a purely volunteer endeavor from our side and we are not inclined to spend that kind of money on commercial website builders. I realize nothing comes free in this world, with the exception of taxes, but maybe you know someone who is willing to help us a bit.
I would appreciate suggestions on parties that may be willing to help.

  • I want to cache all files in my web server for JRE auto installation

    Hi,
I have written an application for my customer. When they access my web server, they will auto-install jre 6.12 and then load my application using jnlp. All that is done, but i want to improve in the following ways:
    1. I want to have more quiet installation of java. It should only show progress bar or just run in background. In the jre installation file (cab file), there is a file jinstall-6u12.inf, the last line is "run=%EXTRACT_DIR%\jinstall.exe /installurl=http://localhost/1.6.0_12-b04.xml /installmethod=plugin". What should I add to this line to make the installation more quiet?
    2. When my client install jre, i want them to fetch all necessary files from my web server, so when java web site is down, i can still provide files they need to install java. I am aiming jre 6.12 only.
    Thank you in advance.

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilitiies > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon
In AirPort Utility 6.x.....click Edit to the right of the Time Capsule
In AirPort Utility 5.x.....click Manual Setup
Click the Disks icon/tab at the top of the next window
    Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a few minutes, but it is not a secure Erase.
The "Zero Out" option will replace everything on the disk with zeros, and will likely take 4-6 hours for the process to complete, depending on the size of the drive.
The erase procedure will only affect the disk. It will not affect any of the network settings, passwords, etc that you have stored on the Time Capsule.

    I agree.
    SELECT ticket_no,name_of_the_passenger..
    FROM ticket_master
    WHERE ticket_no NOT IN
    (SELECT Ticket_no
    FROM ticket_cancellations
    WHERE trip_id = my_trip_id);
This involves creating a little temp table for each record in ticket_no. Then full scanning it.
    Change it to
    SELECT ticket_no,name_of_the_passenger..
    FROM ticket_master B
    WHERE ticket_no NOT EXISTS
    (SELECT null
    FROM ticket_cancellations A
    WHERE A.ticket_no = B.ticket_no
    AND trip_id = my_trip_id);
Then you get an index hit in both cases.

  • How to improve print quality from PSE9 on Mac?

Is there a combination of various options in the Photoshop Elements 9’ and the HP Photosmart (C7180) printer’s dialogue boxes (on a Mac, OS 16) that would result in acceptable photo prints? I’ve browsed around in both the corresponding HP and the Adobe forums and found numerous inquiries with similar problems. Thus, this issue may impact larger audience. Therefore, I am describing my problem in more details below with the hope that someone will offer a satisfactory resolution:
I’ve used earlier versions of Photoshop Elements in a Windows environment to print photos on my HP printer – with quite good results. I wanted to improve quality, so I bought a Mac (after all, “Mac’s forte is graphics, photos, etc.”, isn’t it?) and also upgraded to Photoshop Element 9. Well, to say that the result is a disappointment would be a great understatement. I’ve wasted countless hours, ink and paper in trying different PSE - printer options combinations. The prints are not even close to the quality that I used to get with my earlier setup. Is it possible that a conflict exists between the PSE’s and the printer’s Color Management?
In my earlier setup (under Windows), there was an explicit option to turn Color Management off if I wanted PSE to manage colors (which I still want). In the Mac version of the printer menu I do not find this option (although PSE 9 still gives a warning: "Did you remember to disable color management in the printer preference dialog?"). In the PSE 9 print dialogue box (under “Color Management” – “Color Handling” in “More Options…”), there are three options: “Printer Manages Color”, “Photoshop Elements Manages Colors” and “No Color Management”. In the printer’s dialogue box, there are only two options: “ColorSync” and “Vendor Matching”. There is no “Printer Color Management off” – as it was under Windows setup. Anyway, these options seem to be irrelevant, because they are predefined in accordance with selections in PSE. If either the second or third options is selected in PSE, the “ColorSync” button is preselected in the grayed out Printer dialogue box. If the first option (“Printer Manages Color”) selected, the “Vendor Matching” is preselected in the grayed out HP Printer dialogue box.  Of course, I do NOT want the printer to manage color.
Thus, is there any way to turn of the printer’s color management if I want Photoshop Element to manage color? Is it necessary (or “ColorSync” automatically takes care of that)?
Anyway, this is all very confusing. The bottom line is: Is there a combination of various options in the PSE9’s and the HP Photosmart printer’s dialogue boxes (on a Mac OS 16) that would result in acceptable photo prints? What would be this combination?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello
I wonder if you ever solved this problem.
I have a very similar problem with Photoshop CS5 on Mac OSX 10.6 + HP Photosmart C7180.
If I choose "Photoshop Manages Colors" the results are lousy.
If I choose "Printer Manages Colors" the results are OK. not necessarily great.
I believe I have all the correct settings after going through books and web advice (and wasted a lot of paper and ink).
As far as I can see, "ColorSync" is the internal Mac management which is the only option available with "Photoshop Manages Colors" and "Vendor Matching" appears to mean the printer vendor (ie HP) will provide the matching. Either can be selected if "Printer Manages Colors" is used. It seems the type of paper can be set in three different places. if That's all a bit academic as the results are poor regardless.
My wife suggests I buy a new printer - Epson's looking good.
Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
