Want to install SSD and make it the main drive

Hello, I just purchased my Lenovo IdeaCenter H530 Desktop and straight away installed a GT640 video card.   Everything seems good and I'm waiting to install a SSD.   I would like to run windows 8.1 from the SSD as the primary drive, and use the 1TB HD as a storage drive for files etc.
How should I install the SSD, which BIOS settings should I change, and how can I get windows transferred from the 1TB HD to the SSD, and make sure that windows boots from the SSD?   Is there an online tutorial for this?  Or could someone talk me through this?  Thanks!

hi jenny0101,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
The only concern here is transferring the Windows OS to the SSD drive and everything else remains as it is now.
You can Try Paragon Backup & Recovery 12 Home
I can say
Clone the Drive to your SSD Replace the HDD with your SSD using the same connection and it should work.

  • Just want to install PS and Bridge on the laptop...

I own a license for CS6 Production Premium. On my new Mac Book Air(256 GB Drive) I would like to just install Photoshop and Bridge. How do I custom install. When I start the download I get the entire CS6... Where is the custom install window? Do I install everthing and then remove the unwanted progams? I have the same issue with my license of CS5 Design Premium... I just need InDesign on the MBA
    Thanks

The custom install will come after you enter you serail number and login with the Adobe ID.wherein you can select which application you want to install.

  • I want to install osx 10.6 but the cd drive on my computer is broken. Can I get around this somehow?

I'm using a macbook pro from 2009 and I have the install cd fro 10.6 but no drive. So i'm kind of stuck.

Buy an external Superdrive. It doesn't have to be Apple's, virtually any model that can connect to your Mac will work.

  • 250 GB SSD, and GetInfo on the boot drive shows 267 GB available.

    Puzzlement:
I'm running OSX 10.9.3, and have a 250 GB SSD "hard drive". When I run GetInfo on the boot drive, it shows 267 GB available. How come?

The S.M.A.R.T. status looks ok so it's probably not a issue with a failing disc.
My guess would be that this is due to corrupted filesystem metadata i.e. some of the filesystem data that tracks: size, names and locations of files (and folders) has become incorrect.
This needs to be fixed or it may result in the loss of files or odd bugs - I've personally seen this result in warnings about full disc (when plenty of space was available) and failures to boot.
To fix / determine if it is a filesystem issue:
Select "First Aid" in Disk Utility, use the Verify Disk button to check if there are any issues.
Use Repair Disk to fix detected issues. This may require you to boot form another disc to be able to do the repair.
There are 3rd party tools that may be able to fix issues that Disk Utility can't handle, but I have no experience with these so I can't recommend anything.
The final solution would be to reformat the disc and reinstall / restore from a backup - so remember to backup your data to another disc if you haven't previously done so.

  • How do i remove a user and make myself the main user?

I originally bought this MacBook Pro for me and my boyfriend. He entered in all of his information into the computer and now I am the only user of the Mac but i can't figure out how to stop getting all of the notifications for his facebook and twitter, as well as make my apple ID the primary ID for the laptop, any idea on how to fix this?

Is your account an Admin account? Open Users & Groups or Accounts preferences. See if your account is an admin account:
If you are, then just delete any other user accounts on the computer. Open Sharing preferences where you can change the computer's name if you wish.
What version of OS X are you running? Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. The version will be displayed in the dialog.

  • In Mavericks, every time I try to create a new folder on the drive I  get a prompt for my password. I checked Get Info on the main drive and under Sharing

I got a new 27" iMac with 10.8.5 and migrated a 10.6.8 system and files.  It was working fine. After about 2 weeks I was looking at the Sharing & Permissions and saw an account "wheel".  I mistakenly (I NOW know it was a mistake) changed the permission to no access and subsiquenty could not boot the computer. I had an older iMac so I built a boot disk with the Mavericks installer on it. Booted the computer and restored from a Time Machine backup previous to the change of permissions of the "wheel" account. I went ahead and did a clean install of Mavericks
The computer is now running with Mavericks installed and I am rebuilding.  When I go to create a new folder on the system drive I get prompted for a pasword.
When I checked the permissions and sharing on the main drive it tells me "you can only read".
I am logged in with an admin account. I have run Disk Utiltiy and Tech Tool Pro's  permission verify and repair. Given what happend last time I changed permissions I am reluctant to make any changes.
Anyone have an idea as to what I should do.
    Thanks in advance.

Here is the dialoge box. My account does not appear. Can I just add my account or is there some other problem?

Help

The two other posts are correct... so I'll just clarify.  What's happening right now is your system is trying to boot into Windows in order to finish the installation.  What you want to do is make it boot into OS X.  As mende1 indicated, with your system off, hold down the Option key and continue to hold it while you turn the system on.  You will eventually be presented with an option to select which partition you would like to boot from.  Choose OS X.  After you get into OS X, again, as mende1 indicated, change the Startup Disk to OS X.  What this will do is cause your system to automatically boot into OS X when you restart it instead of you having to use the Option key when booting each time.
Relaunching BootCamp Assistant will allow you to remove your Windows installation and partition.

  • What are the steps to make it seamless for a customer to use the install program and then use the installed program?

I wrote an install program (.exe) that is downloaded from a website.  When run, it 1) leads a customer to browse to a directory, and 2) copies files (.exe, .dll, etc.) from a website to that directory.  When I run, the installed program works.
What are the steps to make it seamless for a customer to use the install program and then use the installed program?

This site https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/vstudio/2kt85ked%28v=vs.110%29.aspx provides a basic description of the Visual Studio Windows Installer.
Near the bottom of the page is "You can unlock all the features of InstallShield by paying to upgrade to the full version of InstallShield."  Where do I find info that describes the differences between the "free" and the "full"
    versions?
    bhs67
    Hello,
The default feature does support the task for your requirement, so there is no need to pay for the other features unless you want to use some feature which is not free.
    In addition, as this thread
InstallShield LE not available with VS 2012 RTM? shared, even through there is a link to InstallShield LE in the New Project dialog under Deployment solutions, but it belongs to third-party that I would recommend you consider posting this issue

  • How do I install a language XPI globally and make it the default language?

I am using Firefox on unices and various Linux distributions (the less common ones). Installing Firefox is easy, but it is always in English. I get most of my interfaces (gnome, libreoffice, gimp, etc) in my preferred translation simply by setting the proper locale (export LANG=xy_XY.UTF-8) before starting Xorg. I found and downloaded my preferred language pack for firefox, which comes in an XPI archive. Opening that XPI file in Firefox (via an URL of file:///path/to/file/langpack.xpi) works smoothly, the translation gets installed under the user's own profile and it shows up in the add-ons (under the new category: Languages). Unfortunately, I still see no way in Firefox preferences to set this added translation as the default. Firefox still starts with the English interface. On SeaMonkey, there is a combobox on the Appearance panel that allows me to select the language of the interface from the list of installed/available languages. I cannot find such option on the panels of Firefox. So far, I had to install a language-changer add-on to be able to set the interface to my native locale. Even though my users never need to switch to any other locales.
Q1., Once a language xpi is installed, how do I set the interface to use that language?
Q2., How do I install the language xpi and make it the system-wide default, so that all my users see Firefox starting with the native (non-English) interface?
I found a handful of description for Q2, but they appear to be outdated and do not work. These include the -install-global-extension argument to Firefox, placing the xpi file as it was downloaded into the "extensions" folder, placing the xpi file renamed to the extension ID into the "extensions" folder, unzipping the contents of the xpi into a subfolder of the "extensions" folder named as the extension ID. Please note, these attempts might have failed because I placed the extension NOT where it was supposed to go. The instructions refer to the global extension folder as <installation folder>/extensions, but on my system no such folder exists. Firefox seems to get installed into /usr/local/lib/firefox and there is no "extensions" subfolder there in. However, there is a "browser/extensions" subfolder, but placing my XPI there did not trigger any effect. Also, I manually created the "extensions" subfolder in /usr/local/lib/firefox and moved the xpi there (on various names, unzipped and in a whole) without the expected result.
Any suggestion is very much appreciated!
My goal is to install the firefox package, then run something from the command line resulting the non-English translation in the downloaded XPI becoming the system-wide default for all users. A step forward would be to know for certain where that "extensions" folder must be on my specific OS. How do I query that?

Excellent. These guides got me as far as installing my preferred language pack, which gets added to the add-ons automatically (assuming the user says yes to the appearing question when Firefox is started).
However, the GUI does not change unless the user enters "about:config" and changes the locale.
Is there a way to do this from the command line? I mean, changing the locale settings.
And preferrably for all users. So even when new users get added and they start Firefox the first time, they see it appearing with the preferred locale and not in English.

  • HT3777 I have a Window 7 HP laptop. I want to install Snow Leopard on an external hard drive as the memory space on my laptop is very less. I have the original snow leopard disc and I think it's a retail version . Please guide me through the installation.

I have the original snow leopard disc and I think it's a retail version . Please guide me through the installation in details. Can you also please let me know about this boot camp.

You cannot. From a legal standpoint, the license agreement for OS X mandates that you run OS X only on Apple hardware. HP is not (yet) owned by Apple.
From a technical standpoint, your HP laptop doesn't use EFI, but rather an early predecessor called a BIOS. Apple is the only vendor of consumer computer hardware that uses EFI; other vendors reserve EFI for use in servers.
Secondly, Apple's operating systems support a rather limited number of configurations of video hardware and mainboard chipsets directly since they need only support those systems that they manufacture. You cannot use Windows software or drivers on OS X, so prior to installation, you would need to write your own hardware drivers for your laptop, create an OS X drive image on a Mac, and then modify that image with your drivers before putting it in the HP.
It will be simpler (and legal), to simply purchase a used Mac. Apple's online store has refurbished MacBook Airs starting at $850 and Mac Minis for $700. If you go to e-bay or craigslist, you'll find used Macs for considerably less.

  • New HD- how do I copy orig HD and make it the master?

    Hi everyone,
I just installed an internal 160GB Seagate drive into my computer which is running 10.2.8, on 12GB original hard drive.
I just placed it in there and plugged it in. Machine was shakey on startup, but it finally showed me the desktop, but no icon for the new disk on there. but luckly, It showed up in system profiler (it says I have 120GB, I know I need a ata thing, but that's fine for now)!
I got into disk utility and partitioned it into 2 parts for (graphics mainly) applications and hard drive info- 60GB. I'll use the other half for storage. Both partitions now appear on my desktop-whew.
how should I go about making the new drive- disk utilities says it's the slave- into the master? (12GB original HD vs. 60GB partition)
Should I just drag and drop files to the new partition? I DL'd that "super duper!" program, should I use that?
and after I do that, should I switch the jumpers on both hard drives to make 120GB the master?
Does it have to be the master to be the startup disk?
why does it have to be the master?
thank you. I love this forum, and I tell everyone about it.

    Hi,
    You need Carbon Copy Cloner.
Here is a post that I made for another user.(who had a laptop)
In X you cannot drag and drop the system like you could in preX systems.
You have to use a program like Carbon Copy Clone or Super Duper or the restore function in Disk Utility. Each has its benefits and liabilities.
My favorite is Carbon Copy Clone. Here is a post I made to another thread on this topic.
A clone is just what it says. It is an exact copy of the parent.
Unlike the mac os's prior to X, you cannot just drag and drop your system or many of it's folders to another hard drive/partition to copy them. There are invisible files and links between files that have to be maintained. No problem, you just use a program for cloning. I have used Carbon Copy Clone for years and for making a simple clone it is easy and works well.
To start with, you need another hard drive. You will need an external firewire drive to make it bootable (a combo firewire/usb is fine but just usb won't work on our macs. The newer Intel macs are usb bootable but ours just work on firewire). Once you have the external drive plug it in, turn it on and format it using Disk Utility to hfs+ journaled. If you want to split the drive in 2 or more parts you can do it now. Keep in mind that you need at least as much space on the clone as the parent takes. To split the drive later would require erasing it's contents so decide if you want to have more than one copy of your system (one for testing the other for backup or what ever). This is all done with Disk Utility.
Now that you have the destination for cloning download CCC
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13260
(This site is also a great one for downloading share ware, updates, etc. so book mark VersionTracker.com).
First open your preferences and select Energy Saver. Set it to a couple of hours or just turn it off. You don't want to sleep during the clone process. You might also want to plug your laptop into the power supply.
Once downloaded, drag CCC to the Applications folder, start it and you will get the panel for cloning. Click the preferences and select "repair permissions before cloning and make bootable".
Close the preferences and on the main panel your source is your current hard drive. The destination is the external drive (or one of it's partitions if you decide to split the hd). Click the lock at the bottom to bring up the authentication window, enter your name, click the clone button and go watch tv or something.
When it is finished you will get a window telling you so. Don't do web surfing or Photoshop work while cloning. If you can't remember what programs are running before cloning then just restart your mac and go directly to CCC or whatever program you decide to use (some like SuperDuper also available on VersionTracker.com. Just enter "clone" in the search window).
When it is all done try booting from your clone. You hold the option key down at boot and with the firewire drive on you should get a screen with both the laptop's hard drive and your external drive as valid start drives. Select the external and it should boot. If it does not go back to your main drive, open preferences and select Startup Disk. Your clone should appear there. Select it and restart. If it still does not work then your clone is bad but in 3 years of cloning I think that this happened one time.
If you ever mess up the main laptop drive or it dies you can start your laptop off the clone, start CCC, erase the laptops messed up/or new drive and clone your backup to the laptop. Now a catastrophic failure of the system or the hard drive won't cost you any lost info and time.
I keep several clones on several drives for backup. Every few months I use dvd's to back up critical customer files but in the interim it is clones of the main drive. When major updates to the system come along and I'm going to install them it is never without making sure that I have an up to date clone to fall back on. Years ago I had a drive fail that I thought was backed up on cd's. It was an expensive lesson in backing up. Since then I have had half a dozen hard drives fail so my paranoia with multiple clones. Cloning is the easiest way to make sure everything is backed up.

  • Can I install SSD and HDD on mac mini server?

hi. I want to buy a new mac mini server with two hdd. can I replace one hdd on my ssd and leave second hdd for files? And can I install OSX on my ssd and windows on my second hdd (divide it into 2 parts... for bootcamp and file storage)? thanks

    AGStudio.pro
as I know, it is impossibe to install ssd and hdd in this model
Thats incorrect, who told you that?    Ive installed a second 7mm drive in several Mac Minis and own 2 myself.  Typing on same now.
(you can put in a second 9.5mm drive rather than a 7mm drive, however it takes nimble fingers unless you want to completely remove the dual drive caddy from inside the mac Mini)
see youtube video on installing second drive in the Mini
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnrhin2ed8E
    AGStudio.pro
       I don't need a server.
Then you dont need the mac mini server.    All you need is a standard mac mini.
The mac mini server is EXACTLY THE SAME as the standard Mac mini quad core mini,....except with a second drive and Server software.
All current Mac Mini have a dual slot for a SECOND DRIVE
