Warcraft and out-of-control fans?

My 13-year old son spends a lot of time on our iMac 5 playing World-of-Warcraft—too much in fact, but that's another issue.
Anyway, I've noticed that sometimes I'll walk into the room when he's playing and the iMac sounds like it's going to take off. In the past, the only way I could fix the out-of-control fans was to completely reinstall Mac OS X—a little extreme I know. I suspect that Warcraft is corrupting something—perhaps the PRAM, NVRAM, or something else. I know how to reset the PRAM, but I think resetting the NVRAM involves using the Terminal and I can'y find the instructions on how to do that.
Does anyone know what causes this and how it can be fixed. Other than this problem, our iMac runs great! Here are the system specs:
iMac G5 20" 2GHz
1 GB DDR SDRAM
Mac OS 10.4.8
250 GB HD (195.35 available)
Thanks,
Kelly

After playing games, see if repairing permissions helps in any way. I always do after playing games wheither they are online games, installed from the CD or games that I played directly from the CD.

  • IMac 20" G5 (gen1) with out of control fans

    My iMac's fans are running at speeds that are driving me and my office mate completely out of our minds. Currently, terminal reports:
    "location" = "System Fan" | | | | "target-value" = 1240 | | | | "location" = "CPU fan"
    | | | | "target-value" = 4343
    | | | "location" = "Hard Drive"
    | | | "target-value" = 1800
    | | | "location" = "sysclk slew"
    | | | "target-value" = 1
    The CPU is running at an average load of 26.1% and is at 144.3 degrees, with no out of control processes, and the hard drive is at 125.6 degrees. That's with only 5 applications running.
    I'm running OS 10.4.3 and the iMac has 2 gigs of RAM. I've run the Apple Hardware Test disk, which reported no problems, and have run an overnight memory test, which also reported no problems and have reverted back to the Apple supplied memory with no positive effect.
    I've also (several times):
    • reset the SMU (PMU for older Mac fans)
    • cleared the PRAM
    • run disk utility
    • repaired the permissions
    • done a clean software install
    Nothing has worked. This is all on a computer whose firewire didn't work out of the box and which I repaired with a refurbed motherboard when it was less than a week old. Nothing like buying a new machine and getting a refurbished one to start you off on the right foot.
    Now I'm trying to get this computer, which is under warranty, repaired but can't even find a number that I can call where I won't get charged! I live in Maine, so taking it to an Apple Store, or even a convenient service center is out of the question. Can someone advise?
    This has been, without a doubt, my most disappointing Apple experience ever (and I owned a Mac Portable!)

    Timothy,
    I'm certainly open to another member's disagreement on this, but It appears to me that you have done everything necessary to disqualify software as the cause of your fan issue.
    In that case, it's probably worth it to you to go ahead and give Apple your credit card to enable phone support for this issue, as it appears likely to be hardware related, which will cost you nothing (they should only charge you if it turns out to be a software issue.
    Phone support will go down a list of things that you need to do to disqualify software, all of which, I believe, you've already tried. The only risk would be if phone support comes up with a software fix that no one on this board thinks to recommend to you. However, on the bright side, if no one on here can come up with another idea to try, and phone support has one that does work, it's going to be worth the cost, what is it - $75, I think?
    I suppose your alternatives would be to:
    1. buy some books or an AppleCare repair course and become an expert,
    or
    2. buy AppleCare and get free phone support back for both software and hardware for another two+ years, as well as valuable rights to in-home repairs.
    If you have seen your iMac run well at times, and can see keeping it, AppleCare at $169 could be a bargain for what you might get out of it in phone support alone, not to mention another expensive part replacement a year from now. Furthermore, there are times it can be found at a lower price on eBay, usually a bit under $100 delivered. I have bought several, for this one I'm using, for a 17" that I sold, plus as a gift for a relative's iMac.
    Best of luck.

  • N95 bleeping and out of Control

    Put my N95 on charge the other night, when i came back to it, it had "please insert Simcard" on the front, i restarted the phone, and from then on, all it does when starting,is to Play and skip music tracks, bleeping like some one is pressing multiple kiys all at once, if i get a call it rings and rejects it, the only way to gain any control over the phone is to hold the camera button in.This only allow certain things to be done, on releasing the button it goes haywire again.I have reflashed the Phone 3 times, if the memory is corrupt is there anyway to reflash the phone with it not turned on incase it's replicating on install?

    NSC seems like the best bet. If you keep using the updater to reinstall you may be one of the unluck ones who bricks the phone. Let the NSC be the ones to do it and then they will replace it. Besides, it should be in warranty still. 2 years for this phone. Probably fix it if you can bear them taking it from you for a while til it's fixed.
    Is that an N95 in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?!?
    Life's too important to take seriously.

  • Out of control fan

    A fan in my pc starts running full speed at random.  It does not matter whether I am using the pc or it is just sitting and running.  Any ideas on how to stop this?  Noise is loud enough to interfere with phone conversations.  Is there a fix?  Thanks

    Akadad, welcome to the forum.
    The first thing that I suggest is opening the case and thoroughly cleaning the inside of the computer.  Dust will definitely cause the symptom that you are experiencing.  Be certain to clean the fan that is making the noise.  Dust on the fans will make them turn improperly and cause noise.
    If this doesn't work, please let us know which fan is causing the problem.

  • MacBook Air is laggy and the fan is out of control

    My MacBook Air 2013 is laggy and the fan is out of control. The fan is out of control even when I start my macbook up. I don't know if it has something to do with Yosemite or something else. I have tried SMC restarting, and nothing has changed. I would really love to hear if anyone else is having this problem, and I would love to hear if any of you have any tips. Also I checked if anything is using up my CPU a bunch, and nothing is out of the ordinary.

    The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
    When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
    ☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
    ☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
    Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
    If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
    Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
    If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
    User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
    Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
    Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

    My batteri isnt charging (its dead, can make it without AC for 3min) and after 2 min of using the computer the fan goes from 1500rpm to 6200rpm. Ist because the batteri isnt working as i should or is the problem something else that make the fan go out of control?

  • My problem is that after printing the first photo or picture, when I come to print a second, both the Colour Management and Epson Colour Controls are greyed out and showing No Colour Management

    I have recently purchased a Mac computer (updated to Maverick) to go with my Epson Stylus Photo RX500 printer which has given excellent service with my old Windows computer. However, when trying to print pictures or photos via Photoshop Elements 11, the best results I can get are using the Colour Management and Epson Colour controls in the printing options box.
    My problem is that after printing the first photo or picture, when I come to print a second, both the Colour Management and Epson Colour Controls are greyed out and showing No Colour Management, The only way I can reset the controls is to shut down the printer and computer and restart.
    Could there may be a setting somewhere that I need to adjust please?  I have been in touch with Epson and they say that the Epson Colour controls are part of the Photoshop Elements software but a post on the Adobe forum brought no results and I am unable to contact Adobe.
    <Edited by Host>

    Hello Garry. Thanks for the reply. I guess I should have used a different title from "How do I post a question?" That should come after trying to resolved the colour settings first. However, to answer your question, after experimenting with all the different settings in Photoshop Elements and Epson software, I now start with PSE11 Colour settings then click "no colour management" then after clicking Print, I choose "More Options/Colour Management/Colour Handling/Printer Manages Colour" then I choose "Page Setup/Layout/Colour Matching" which then shows Epson Colour Controls but I also choose "Layout/Colour Management" which then shows "Colour Controls/Mode" I then of course choose an Epson printer profile depending on the paper I am using. I get good results but as I said, the Colour Matching and Colour Controls are then greyed out. Hope that makes sense.

    Album overview
    A photo album in iPhoto is just like one you would create with printed photos: It’s a collection of photos you select from your library and arrange in the order you want.
    You can create photo albums to:
    Focus on a particular subject, such as your favorite nature photos
    Group pictures that you want to send to a friend, post on a webpage, or burn to a CD or DVD
    Gather a decade of anniversary photos
    iPhoto has two kinds of photo albums:
    Standard photo albums: You create these albums (B, shown below) by selecting particular photos. You can add new photos by dragging them to the album (or using the Add To button), and you can remove photos at any time. All adding and removing is done manually; iPhoto doesn’t update standard albums automatically as you import new photos.
    Smart Albums: iPhoto creates these albums for you, based on criteria your specify. iPhoto then updates Smart Albums (A, shown above) for you as your library changes. For example, you could create a Smart Album containing:
    Photos of specific people, such as your family members. As you import new photos, iPhoto uses Faces to detect your family members, and automatically adds new photos of them to the Smart Album (after you’ve confirmed the matches in Faces).
    All the photos of your daughter taken on school field trips in third grade. Use Faces (to name your daughter) and keywords (to mark certain photos or events as “field trips”) to help specify the photos you want iPhoto to place in that Smart Album.
    Only photos taken with a specific camera, or photos matching other Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) information.
    You can make as many albums as you like, and you can include the same photo in several albums without making multiple copies of it.
    After you create an album, such as “Australia Adventures,” it appears in your Source list below Albums.
    In full-screen view, the album appears as a stack of photos below Albums.
    To further organize your library, you can group several albums (along with slideshows and projects) into a folder. For example, you could create a folder containing several years of birthday albums or a collection of albums with photos of your camping trips.
    To create a folder, see “Create a folder in the Source list and move items into it” in “Customize the Source list”.
    Folders appear only in the Source list, not in full-screen view.
    Note: A photo album is different from a photo book, which is a collection of photos you create to get professionally printed and bound. See this topic: Photo book overview.

    I am using my ipad 2 ( bought in USA)  for about 3  years. 2 weeks back the touch gesture was completely out of control and  the screen  was jumping automatically to so many applications. I  attempted to get original settings through settings  menu, but unfortunately while resuming when I typed a pass code the  touch gesture , without control it  typed unknown passcode and while  confirming the passcode as well same thing happened.
    Now my Iapd2 is disabled and itunes also not recognizing my ipad.
    I kindly request you to help me to fix the issue.

    Many thanks.
    With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
    Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
    (If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

    Help. My pointer is out of control. It hardly responds to the trackpad. Instead it jumps around the screen on its own, opening windoes and app at random.

    It may well be a driver issue but considering the loading: Xorg trying to load different drivers is somewhat normal. @cafe you can see that these are autoconfigured by X above the loading in the log:
    Jul 20 19:48:24 arch gdm-Xorg-:0[216]: (==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 0
    Jul 20 19:48:24 arch gdm-Xorg-:0[216]: (==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 1

    Jul 20 19:48:24 arch gdm-Xorg-:0[216]: (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 4
    As long as one of the drivers gets loaded, which it apparently does the failing of the others is fine.
    Was there an update maybe ?

  • Can I control the in and out point of a layer with a keyframe?

    Hi all, I'm working in a sort of template for a series of mograph videos. Some sort of motion typography work.
    The animation is always the same but the only thing that changes is the length of the video (for legibility purposes).
    I was wondering if I can control the in and out points of a layer with the keyframes from another layer.
    Lets say Layer's A keyframe from slider 1 position in time is the out point (plus/minus an offset would be also great) of layer B.
    I've been playing with expressions on a regular basis but I don't really know where and how to write an expression like that or if it's possible.
    Thanks in advance

    This should probably be moved to the expression forum then.
    I'm not sure I understood the details of your project but here's a basis: you can do that with an expression in the layer's time remapping property. So if you want a layer to start playing at the second keyframe on another layer, you can try something like (writing in my browser, watch for mistakes):
    //   The "number" of the keyframe (first, second, third, etc)
    var index = 2;
    //   The layer with the keyframes
    var l = {pick-whip the layer with keyframes here};
    //   Just a safety, check the layer has at least enough keyframes
    if (l.numKeys >= index)
         //   If yes, the new time is the difference between the keyframe's time and the current time
        max(0, l.key(index).time-time);
    else
         //   Doesn't matter, let's return 0
        0;

    Try doing a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if that appears.
    If that does not help, take the iPad to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs check out the screen to see if there is a hardware fault.

  • Music fading in and out with XtremeGam

    OK, I have Vista Ultimate x64. I also have the Logitech Z-5500 5. speakers. Everything ws sounding perfect and couldn't ask for anything to be better after I squared away my issues with not having EAX effects while gaming. Truthfully I really have no idea how I did that but the EAX worked fine in games after I download Alchemy but the games I am playing are not supported in Alchemy....strange. Anyway, when I built the new computer I only downloaded the drivers and no other software, I was told I needed to download Alchemy and also get the Creative Audio Launcher in order to get the EAX to work properly. After I did that all went to hell with playing music and only music. I now have issues with music in Itunes fading in and out really bad. I had uninstalled the Creative Audio Console(I had downloaded it a few days after the Alchemy and that was when the stufff hit the fan) and after doing that I ended up with a problem with Control Panel and the Windows games not opening. I took care of that problem so now it is on to why the music is still fading in and out I had considered that it may be I need to uninstall ALL of the Creative crap and then install only what I am needing, the Creative Audio Console(not the Launcher), drivers, and Alchemy. So any ideas of what can actually be the problem(s) I really hate to listen to music that is constantly fading in and out and my wife more or less uses the computer as a huge Mp3 player, she is real upset and is going off the walls not having her music play right. She listens to the music kind of loud and that is real noticable at those high volumes.Also, the speakers are not the issue, I hooked up my old set and I know they worked properly and they still gavve me the same results. I figure it has to be either the sound card or Itunes. I have not played music in any other media player yet so it is possible for it to be an Itunes problem instead. I plan on posting on their forums as well to see if I can get any help from that end. EDIT:Windows Vista Ultimate x644Gb of RAMXtremeGamerEVGA 8800GTIntel E8400Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4(rev. 2.0)If any of this will help.

    I had the same thing with Winamp. What I did was add Winamp to Alchemy manually and that cleared it up. I don't know if the same will work for iTunes or not though. Good luck!
