Warning: Migration Assistant Seriously Flawed

When upgrading across OS versions and architectures, it is advisable not to transfer applications, especially those that have Startup Items or Launch Daemons.
I upgraded my daughter from a PPC/Tiger based Powerbook to a MacBook I brought up the MacBook with fresh application installs and updates, and then transferred the user files with the Migration Assistant. It did not allow me to disable Library transfer. This ended up installing some Maxtor and other startup daemon that killed performance due to continuous crashing and relaunching. I isolated the offending issues with console logs, but this is not end user friendly.
Interestingly, the Macbook is fast enough that the main symptom was sluggish performance on new webs sites.
I would suggest manually transferring user files hierachies under this kind of circumstance, and avoiding transfer of any library items.

  • Migration Assistant: Complaint/Warning

-I recently decided that my installation of OSX was irreversibly contaminated with many test installations, updates gone wrong, and partition getting to small for OSX, and its apps. After reformatting the drive of choice, and zero leveling the data, I installed a Clean OSX Tiger. Then I proceeded to copy over only what was needed from my old installation, Preferences and such. Since Im the Admin, I did not want contaminated settings and applications getting moved associated with my account or System Level files.
Once all updates were acquired, everything was moved to my liking, I then Moved my other user profiles. Ones that have nothing added to them and should have been safe to move, only needed their own User Unique files.
Migration assistant should have only moved files directly related to those profiles. Or so I thought. But no, it copied many of the Main non user Folders, at System Level and anything in them not already on the destination drive, from the old drive, including the Library folder and its unique files.
So now all my careful work to avoid moving corrupted files has gone in vein. Everything done is Irreversible, short of starting from scratch again!
-Course this isn't the first time something like this has happened.
As I was backing up files on my OS9 computer, I used the File Synchronization Control Panel to be sure all files were copied over to the backup.
When next I looked, the synchronization manager which was supposed to be running in one way mode, had decided that many of the Files didn't exist and it erased them Permanently since they were not on the originating drive. To this date that computer sits, as is, until I can figure out how to resurrect my lost files from the depths of binary death.
-My warning is, beware ANY software that HELPS to move files for you. You run the risk that it will do as it thinks best, and you will get more than you bargained for. Also in both cases this was Apple Software, not 3rd party.
Also I have ALL the Utilities. They rarely peform miricle recoveries. Infact they often fail to recover a File you errase, just to see if it can be recovered!
-Of course this would be a Little Simpler if I could actualy backup OSX. But somehow even the Most highly regarded software fails to Accuratly duplicate the OS. I can only imagine that this was some kind of built in File Protection. Unfortunatly its made a Nusance of itself.

I have to admit that I haven't used "Carbon Copy" yet. But I've used the antiquated DejaVu and DiskUtility, and Toast. Then I use either Disk Utility or Toast to compare the Disks. Some how theres usually sever hundred files missing. Every disk I've made as backup and Tried to boot was corrupt... I believe these utilities all encounter Authentication/Permissions issues, and ignore said files.
I miss the days when all I needed was to Drag and Drop the System Folder. Open and Close, to have it blessed and restart. I miss the days when the System was as simple as Finder and System, and the OS actually fit on a 512k floppy! Now a DVD barely seems to Hold the Girth.
-Of course I should note, that for whatever reason Booting from a CD and Booting from a HDD, seem to be vastly different animals, and the subject of this in itself is an entirely separate topic.
And just for the Point of making off topic points:
I've run Both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on the OSX Tiger disk. They both say its damaged. This of course was on a new disk, with New current utilities. All attempts to Duplicate the original disk and FIX the error have resulted in a NonBoot Copy which is useless as a backup. I suppose though, that every one is so worried about 10.5 that trivial issue with the 10.4 CD is just that, Trivial. Perhaps the Error, is not an error at all.
I use my OSX installer once every several month because over time, various Installations and Even system Updates bug up the system. I then Zero Level the Disk, and install a new on a Different partition, or HD. My concern is that in the past CDs have occasionally become scratched on the Painted side. While this is no big deal for Most CDs, Installers are especially Critical to be kept top Condition. OS9 had a bug in the "Big System Morsels" package that people most often mistook for a scratched CD, and Back then I Sprayed on a Heavy Clear Enamel to protect the Disk, as well as made a Duplicate just in case. But today I have a DVD burner, Tools to Fix many disk errors, and DL DVD-RW. I prize the DL DVD-RW for backups because aside from snapping them in-two, almost NO scratch can harm them, with the Extra Layer of clear Acrylic on top, the Reflective layer is no longer exposed.
Perhaps I should post the CD thing in its own Topic...?

  • Serious problem after migration assistant - any ideas?

    Hi folks-
I bought an iMac this weekend and for various reasons did not configure with data from my MacBook Pro when I first turned it on, but waited until two nights ago to use Migration Assistant to transfer all but users.
I updates both machines fully with Software Update first. MigAsst went fine until I hit the begin option and after a few minutes the iMac told me there was a problem with my MacBook Pro (MBP). I quit MigAsst on the iMac but even after an hour I couldn't escape it or quit the MBP, so shut down using the power button.
When I restarted, I had a black screen with lighted keyboard and startup chime. I hard-restarted, same thing happened. Third time, I got the grey apple window with no apple for about ten minutes, then a light blue screen with the spinning spokes (not the rainbow) and a slightly darker window with no spokes. The two blue windows alternated back and forth for maybe 8-10 seconds each endlessly until I restarted.
Since I live about 4 hours from the nearest Apple store and tech support was already closed for the evening, I restarted from the Snow Leopard disk and repaired permissions (there were many repairs) and repaired the disk (was told it was fine). I restarted and got the grey-blue-blue cycle again.
I reinstalled the OS from the Snow Leopard disk and everything worked fine - I ran as many tests as I know how to, even perturbed the casing slightly wondering if it was a loose video card wire or something. Nothing. It all worked fine for several hours until after the second Software Update (which as I recall was only Java and iTunes), and now all I get is the black screen again. Also, now the green light on the power cable is not glowing even though the battery reads as fully charged and the keyboard and startup chime are all hunky dory.
I'd think it was a video card issue, but there are too many incongruous symptoms. If I could at least start up from the OS disk again I could get my data off... Any ideas, diagnoses or suggestions would be much appreciated.
    With gratitude and blessings.

The problem is described in a different post as well, and it is considered to be answered. However, the answers are not very satisfactory because they are complicated.
The underlying problem is that MacOS is looking for a FileVault user, while after migration the user files are actually not within a FileVault bundle.
I believe that there must be a setting to change the login properties for the user to not look for a FileVault user, but for a plain, non-encrypted user. So please, somebody from Apple answer this questions!
Command line very welcome, because I only have a command line user right now. And oh, my MBA didn't ship with a boot DVD so I don't even have the chance to reinstall my system easily. Also, getting my data out of the FileVault on my current machine, transfering everything again (almost 250 GB) and then putting them back into FileVault seems a bit too much effort for what appears to be a simple bit set somewhere…

  • Warning re Migration Assistant

I used Migration Assistant to move my files, settings, etc. from my G5 iMac to my new 15" MBP. Over the first few weeks, I had problems connecting to my home network after sleep, could not open any MS Office application, could not install any updates (kept saying there was an error installing the software), and my firewall options were greyed out (again, saying there was an error). PS - I had bought a Mac Mini (Intel) before the MBP and had the same firewall problems.
I visited Tekserve here in NYC and was told that Migration Assistant could have caused the problem. So I installed a fresh version of OSX (not archive and install, as that saves some settings that may have been corrupted by Migration Assistant). All issues now seem to be resolved - I can install updates, access firewall settings, open MS Office, and return to my wireless network after sleep.
Has anyone had a similar experience

There were some prior migration assistant threads here about how it tends to 'copy over' old preference/library files which may interfere with the program running properly on the new hardware. It happened when moving library folders from G4s to G5s, as well.
If you constantly have problems after a migration, try removing the preferences for that application from the library folder.

  • Serious issue after Migration Assistant

    Hi all-
Looking for feedback as to what in **** might be going on with my MacBook Pro and how to proceed with it.
Last weekend I bought a 27" iMac for my home office. For various reasons I did not transfer data from my laptop at the time of setup, but the next night.
When I went to use Migration Assistant (after reading a bit on here about it), everything went fine until I actually entered the code the network code the iMac gave me and tried to start the transfer. The MacBook Pro wouldn't respond; the iMac told me it wasn't responding, and the MBP wouldn't quit Migration Assistant. Even after waiting an hour, Migration Assistant was still frozen, so I did a "hard" power off with the power button.
When I went to restart, the drive started, startup chimed, but the screen stayed black. I had to leave for work, so hard-turned it off again and left it alone. When I returned to it last night, I got past the black screen but it would stay in grey screen for around 7-8 minutes, then alternated every 10-15 seconds between a light blue screen with the spinning spokes wheel (not rainbow) and a slightly darker blue window with no spokes. It went back and forth like this for maybe 5 minutes, so I shut the MBP off again and went through the whole process a second time with the same result.
Since I live almost 4 hours from the nearest Apple Store, and Support was closed, I used my Snow Leopard disk to repair permissions - there were a lot of repairs. I then repaired disk, and was told the disk was fine. I restarted, same grey-light blue-dark blue issues, so reinstalled Snow Leopard.
After the OS reinstall, everything restarted and worked fine! I did a software update, then on the second software update (which as I recall was just java and iTunes) things went south again. When I restarted after the second software update the screen did the black thing again. Keys are lighting up, chime happens, but no screen.
The other thing that is different this time is that the green light on the power cable is not lighting up and I cannot seem to boot to the Snow Leopard disk, so I can't even get back to the post-OS-reinstall-pre-software-update stage again to get my data off the machine.
Not sure what to do next! This sound like a clear-cut issue of the X or the Y to anyone? Any feedback is appreciated.
    With blessings,
    Matthew

Did you use Setup Assistant when your new Mac first started up, or skip that, create a user account, then use the Migration Assistant app in your Applications/Utilties folder?
If you used Setup Assistant, when you started your first backup you should have gotten the message in #B5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  It sounds like you didn't (or chose Start New Backup).  And no, the Leopard procedure doesn't work on Snow Leopard.  That's what #B5 is for.
Usually, if you use Setup Assistant, Time Machine will still say it's going to do a full backup, and make room for it, but actually do an incremental backup (very, very slowly).
Either way, it usually deletes a lot of old backups.    We're hoping that will be fixed in Lion.
Once it's decide to make a new backup, there's no known way to prevent it.

  • When starting Migration Assistant it cancels transfer without warning Why?

I have a new used macBook Pro which I have restored to factory settings then all updates and installation of Mavericks. Now I am attempting to transfer everything from my Mac Mini, also Mavericks, using Migration Assistant. Both computers recognize each other and all appears well until just after thenew computer finishes checking the old one. It calculates space then before I can do anything I get a message saying Transfer Cancelled. The old computer logs off and needs restarting and I'm forced to quit Migration Assistant on both computers. What is wrong? Anyone know? Thanks

If you are migrating to a larger internal HD, then, percentage wise, these files would be taking up less space on your machine. Where are you getting these percentages from?
Finder Menu > Apple Logo About this Mac > More Info > Storage
#only shows disk usage in GB, not as % figures.
"The Software ran without a glitch and the new machine is functioning normally."
I suspect nothing is wrong and all your data was transferred.

  • Migration Assistant -- Not Finding Users?

Had to re-install 10.4.7 from install disks on my mam's 1.83 GHz dual-core iMac (Erase and Install). Carbon Copy Cloned the original start-up disk to an external FireWire drive.
After installation, Mig. Asst. gave me the option to "Transfer from Another Volume on this Mac". Chose the relevant volume. Now it has been looking for the Users on the cloned volume for 30 mins, with the spinning bar-circle whizzing round and round...
is there any way to transfer users and settings manually?
    TIA

It's working now, after deselecting the 'Spare' volume in the MigAsst. (Don't know what it was supposed to do, anyway, or why it's made a difference).
Seriously, what a hateful, dispiriting experience this has been. Just because I wanted to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Apparently MacOS will let you partition your entire HD as a Master Boot Record without warning you that you can install Tiger on it, but you won't be able to update it to Leopard or S/L... so you have to buy an external HD, clone your Tiger HD, erase and install Tiger (GUID partitioned this time), restore from the clone using Migration assistant...
...And this is supposed to 'Just Work'?

  • After Restoring with Migration Assistant internet accounts are not working properly

    Hello!
My Macbook Pro's HDD fried a week ago, so I swapped it for a new one. I had a backup from about 30mins before the issue happened, so I thought everything would go fine with Time Machine. Well, not quite. After installing Mac OS X Mavericks from the Disk Utility and telling the system to apply the latest backup on Migration Assistant during the installation, everything started up the way I left it, but several problems showed up and I have been trying to troubleshoot them.
    Issues:
    1. I used to have Facebook, Twitter and two Gmail accounts logged via the Internet Accounts preferences. Used the gmail accounts for notes, contacts and calendars. Now, they all show up on the menu, but when I click on any of them it tells me they aren't connected and asks me for their password. When I put it down, it gives me an "Unable to verify account" message. If I delete the accounts and try to reinsert them, I get the same message. What's even more weird: When I restart, they are all there again.
    2. Notes doesn't update properly. It shows me all the notes up until like 4 weeks ago, and whenever I even click on the app's window, it tells me it can't connect to Gmail and asks me for its password again. Several other apps that require syncing, like Calendar, have the same issue.
    Troubleshooting attempts:
    1. It's not a problem with these accounts, as I've been able to  sync them no problem if I create a new user. But I had some serious work being done and I don't really want to get a fresh start.
    2. I tried doing a clean install and when the Migration Assistant showed up I asked to transfer everything except personal documents and data. It worked, but I lost all my personal files that are not on dropbox (not many, but there were a few important things). Also the wifi didn't connect at all, kept saying it was self assigning an IP or whatever. This did not happen before.
    3. Not using migration assistant at all, but restarting the system and restoring a time machine backup, even an earlier one from that same day. Mac gets stuck on spinning wheel during boot :/
This killed my weekend's productivity already, as each clean install and time machine restoring takes 3hrs+. I don't know what to do at this point.
Macbook Pro, Early 2011, 13". Old HDD 320gb, new one 500gb. OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 (the backup is from 10.9.3)

    ragob66,
    Welcome to the Apple discussions!
    Try this:
*Accessing Time Machine Backups From Another User Account or Computer*
Yes, you can do this using the Time Machine interface.
Attach the drive containing the TM backups to your computer.
Control-click the TM icon in the dock and select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks...".
Highlight the desired disk and click “Use Selected Disk”. This will now allow you to browse those TM backups via the ‘time travel’ window. From here you can restore what files you need access to. Bear in mind that any files moved will have the permissions of that previous user account. Thus you may be prompted for the user name and password of that previous account. However, once verified you should be able to adjust “Sharing & Permissions” in the files “Get Info” window.
Let us know if this resolved your issue.

  • Windows migration assistant created 2 accounts on my Mac

Windows migration assistant created 2 accounts on my daughters new Mac,
In a hurry to set up my daughters New Macbook Air we downloaded the Windows Migration Assistant when migrating we unticked music and videos intending to migrate them at a later date and migrated everything else.
Then today a week later we decided to migrate the music and videos across and was amazed to see the software had created a new separate account on the mac.
So my daughter has one account with all her coursework and other info then a separate account with all her music and iTunes etc.
There was nothing in the process that suggested or warned it was a one time tool per account and why the code writers would assume a new account was needed each time the tool is used seems a rigid approach.
Does anybody know if there's a way to get the music and videos over to the first account and then delete the unneeded second account?

While it surprised me what to migration did with transferring the old files, it really out smarted me - to no real surprise.
It might have been nice to have known what to expect. Now that this is done, how can I keep some files separate on the two different accounts.
I want access to some files on one account but not on the other. Shared files, maybe?
How can that be set up?
    Thanks.

  • Migration assistant created a new user when transferring files from a PC to mac

I just bought a new macbook air and proceeded to transfer my itunes music files from my old PC to my new mac using the migration assistant.  I could not find my music files that I had transferred in itunes on my admin user account but later found them on another user acount that I had not created. I was wondering if there was a way to collapse the two user accounts into one or transfer my music from one account to the other? (I tried using an external hard drive but it would not add my music files to the itunes library). Any ideas??

    Cattus Thraex wrote:
I agree with the idea of an enhancement request, MA should have some more options if used later, normaly users a curious to log into the fresh system, and transfer data and settings at a later date.
Unfortunately, a "merge" option, where it would add things to an existing user account, isn't realistic.  That would work fairly well for such things as documents, where everything is in separate files (although settings and preferences would get a bit tricky).
But not for things like iCal, AddressBook, or Mail, where there are complex structures.  Trying to merge those in any automated way would be very complex.   Even worse would be 3rd-party apps that Apple can't possibly know how to handle.
One thing that might help would be rewording the "You can transfer information later using Migration Assistant" line at the bottom of the Setup Assistant window:
A number of us have asked for that to be worded differently -- warning that it's much better to do it first, or not to install stuff you're going to need, or something.   All to no avail, of course.

  • Time Machine Migration Assistant HELP!

My MacBook Air has a whole lot of storage that is being used for who knows what.
I am going to back up my mac, erase it, and reinstall the backup because that seems to work. But, I have no idea what the differences and similarities in Time Machine and Migration Assistant is. Can I use migration assistant to back it up and reinstall on the same computer? If not, how do I install a time machine backup on a compeletely erased mac? (I'm on OS X Mavericks)

Before you do anything else, I strongly suggest you figure out what's taking up the space.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take a few minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How do I use migration assistance with hard drive reader for dead macbook

    Hi,
My old mac laptop died without warning.
I took it to the apple store and they suggested getting a hard drive reader and using that to transfer
    across my files.
I've connected it up and have requested the migration assistant to transfer the files. Last night it
said it would 27 hours to transfer and now this morning it is saying 72 hours. This seems to
be a very long time - is it correct? Can I make it go faster or is there another way?
I've got a bit of music on there but nothing excessive. I do have about 15,000 photos though.
I'm not very techy so any assistance would be very helpful
    Thanks
    Sarah

Hi, that's far to long, unless maybe it's USB1.1 speed.
If USB2 or Firewire, I'd start ober & try Disk utility>Repair Disk on the external drive.

  • Using Migration Assistant to restore after hard drive failure?

My MacBook's hard drive recently went kaput. The replacement arrived today and I attempted to do a TM restore when booting from the Snow Leopard disc. However, it inccorrectly states "This disk does not have enough space to restore your system." The new hard drive is exactly the same as the old one; both are 640 GB. I have researched this issue for hours and no one seems to know how to fix it, and frankly I am shocked that Apple has failed to recognize this serious problem.
So, my question is, can I use Migration Assistant with a fresh install of SL and get exactly the same results as I would if I had restored via Time Machine? Will I lose any data in the process that I would have had, had I done it via TM?
Another thing: I was messing around in the Migration Assistant window just to see how it worked. I selected everything that was available to be restored. However, it stated there was still around 150 GBs of free space on the drive. I had nowhere near that much free space on the old drive, and one would think that that would have left TM with enough space to go through with the restore. How is this sudden new, free space accounted for?

If you haven't already, use Disk Utility (which should be available early in the Snow Leopard installer boot process) to partition and format the new disk.  Select the drive (not the volume), select the Partition tab, click on the Options button, then select "GUID Partition Map Scheme" (or whatever the exact wording is).  Then format the volume as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

  • MacBook Pro i7 running incredibly slow - could it be Migration Assistant?

My new MacBook Pro i7 is running super slow - generally, everything is slow to open, it hangs, t stalls and crashes completely - I thought this could be something to do with Migration Assistant, any ideas?
I used Migration Assistant to copy the user account, docs and apps from my Mac Pro. It's fantastic, the Migration Assistant, in that in copies everything and sets you up to hit the ground running - but this brand new laptop is seriously lagging behind.
The only problem with my theory is that my Mac Pro isn't slow and as it is, although a lower spec than the MBP, the Mac Pro is faster - so what could Migration Assistant have copied across that makes it run slower?

Alternatively, boot the MBP with the shipped install disc, reinstall the software, and then use the setup assistant to migrate your stuff from the MP. See Best Practices for details.
