Web.xml Backup copy location

Before I make changes to web.xml files I make a backup copy, (webbackup.xml). Does it matter if this backup file is saved in the same folder location as the web.xml that is being changed? I've been told by some people to save the backup in a different folder.
I would appreciate any response.
Thanks,
Mike

Denis,
Thanks for the response.
I can see how this would be good practice. Could this actually cause a problem if saved in the same folder?

  • How to generate web.xml automatically?

    Hi all!
    I am new to servlets. I have configured the tomcat 5.5.9 with eclipse 3.0 succussfully. It is generating the class files. But I want to know how to generate web.xml through it.
    Thanks in advance...
    Code Snooker

    AFAIK, there's no template for generating web.xml.
    Navigate to <TomcatInstallDir>/webapps/
    You would find lot of directories - each one being a web application.
    Navigate to any one, say ROOT and then to the WEB-INF directory
    under that.
    You would find a web.xml.
    Copy it into your <web-application-dir>/WEB-INF folder and make necessary changes
    cheers,
    ram.

  • Web.xml Tomcat 5.0 Servlet problem

    Hey guys....
    The last time I used a servlet was before the new change in security in Tomcat. Ive been looking all over the net for some easy references about how they are to be mapped but no matter what I try nothing seems to work.
    My servlet is located in ROOT\Admin\WEB-INF\classes\colt and is called AddOLO.class
    My web.xml file is located in ROOT\Admin\WEB-INF and contains the following code:
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>AddOLO</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>colt.AddOLO</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>AddOLO</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/Admin/add</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    On the HTML form invoking the Servlet (addOLO.html) Im using the following small piece of code
    <form action="http://Colt/Admin/servlet/AddOLO" method="post" align="centre">
    The server is operating on Port 80.
    All I seem to be getting is a 404 Error Saying The requested resource (/Admin/servlet/AddOLO) is not available. Can anyone see what is wrong here?
    Thanks in advance

    I don't think there's anything to prohibit you from deploying servlets in ROOT, but webapps that have pages and servlets that work together should be in their own context. That's what you did when you created the directory under webapps. I think it's the right way to deploy web apps. Even better, learn how to create and deploy WAR files:
    http://access1.sun.com/techarticles/simple.WAR.html
    Once you have a WAR, which is simply a JAR'd version of the directory you just created under webapps, you can simply pick it up and deploy it by dropping it into the webapps directory of any Tomcat server. Tomcat will unpack it for you. - MOD

  • JCIFS NTLM - giving backup domain controller in web.xml

    Hi All,
    We are using JCIFS NTLM authentication, for which we've configured the filter in web.xml like this
    ... other code ...
    <filter>
        <filter-name>NtlmHttpFilter</filter-name>
        <filter-class>jcifs.http.NtlmHttpFilter</filter-class>
        <init-param>
            <param-name>jcifs.http.domainController</param-name>
            <param-value>SERVER1</param-value>
        </init-param>
        ..... other code .....the above code specifies a single domain controller SERVER1 for the NTLM authentication. Suppose, I want to give one more server also (i.e. when the SERVER1 down, NTLM should check my backup server SERVER2), how do I give it in the above code? Is it like <param-value>SERVER1, SERVER 2</param-value> ?
    Thanks in advance.

    I am facing the same exact problem.
    <filter>
              <filter-name>NtlmHttpFilter</filter-name>
              <filter-class>jcifs.http.NtlmHttpFilter</filter-class>
              <init-param>
                   <param-name>jcifs.http.domainController</param-name>
                   <param-value>corg0dc02</param-value>
              </init-param>
    </filter>
        <filter-mapping>
             <filter-name>NtlmHttpFilter</filter-name>
             <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern>
        </filter-mapping>
       Is it possible to use EL or equivalent instead of hard-coding the param-value? Is this allowed in the Servlet spec?
    I would like to read the param-value from a properties file or DB table if possible.

    #1 programmers excuse: It works for me. You must be doing something wrong.
    Finding out what is the trick.
    I have Tomcat 5.0.28, but I don't think it would make THAT much difference.
    What version of Java are you running?
    You shouldn't need the entry for the JSTL library c. That works without an entry in web.xml, provided you use the correct URI.
    First step: make a test page that only uses that one taglib - eg an html:base tag.
    Confirm that it breaks with the current setup.
    Backup web.xml, and start it from scratch with an absolute minimal one - only import the struts-html library.
    Does that work?
    Slowly copy and paste in the different bits of web.xml until you find what breaks it.
    Hope this helps,

  • I try to open I photo and  I get the message, your iPhoto library is damaged...please restore from backup. But i din't made backup copy. How can i delete previous library and work wrom the new one?

    I try to open I photo and  I get the message, your iPhoto library is damaged...please restore from backup. But i din't made backup copy. How can i delete previous library and work wrom the new one?

    Try this (assuming you're using iPhoto 12): make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
      Fix #1
    delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
    delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
    reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
    NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
    Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
    Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
    Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
    Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
    Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
    In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
    Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Configuing web.xml for using JSTL tags in WAS

    Hi All
    I have an application deployed in websphere.
    After extracting jakarta-taglibs-standard-current.zip I copied the jar files ( from the \jakarta-taglibs-standard-1.0.6\lib folder) to the web-inf\lib folder.
    Then I saved the c.tld ( from the jakarta-taglibs-standard-1.0.6\tld folder) to the \web-inf\taglibs\ folder
    Then I modified the web.xml to include
           <taglib>
                 <taglib-uri>http://java.sun.com/jstl/core</taglib-uri>
                 <taglib-location>/WEB-INF/tlds/c.tld</taglib-location>
          </taglib>The problem is when i restart the application from the WAS administrative console. The application does not restart with the error

    When I remove the " <taglib-location>/WEB-INF/tlds/c.tld</taglib-location> " I am able to restart the application. But the path is right.. and the tld is ther. What cud be the issue here ??
    Any thoughts ??

    Hi
    The position of the tablig tag in web.xml was wrong. So it was not validated according to the dtd specification. I placed the tag after the errortag in the web.xml and it resolved the issue.

  • Dynamically modifying web.xml

    Hi,
              I am trying to write code that will dynamically add a servlet definition to a deployed application. ie, the deployment descriptor is dynamically edited. In Tomcat, I am able to edit the web.xml file(when the app is exploded) or I can edit the in memory copy and produce a servlet definition on the fly
              I am trying to do the same of Weblogic 8.1. Everything is straightforward as long as the app is exploded, in which case I simply edit the web.xml file..when the app is not exploded, this is not possible. I tried using MBeans to see if I can add a servletRuntimeMBean to a deployed application, but this does not seem possible..looks like these beans are instantiated by the container and there is no handle for developers to create instances of these beans. I was wondering if it was possible to edit the in memory copy of web.xml that the servlet container records. Any suggestions in this regard would be highly welcome
              Thanks, and sorry for the lengthy email!

    <taglib>
         <taglib-uri>/mytags</taglib-uri>
         <taglib-location>/mytags.tld</taglib-location>
    </taglib>That means that your tag libaray definition is located at /root/mytags.tld. Some people put them in the WEB-INF, which would make it /root/WEB-INF/mytags.tld.
    The taglib-uri is how you are going to reference it in your JSP. With the above setup, here is how you would reference in your JSP
    <%@ taglib uri="/mytags" prefix="myTagPrefix" %>
    <myTagPrefix:mySpecialTag/>
    Hope this helps.

  • Web.xml file problem in tomcat

    Hi i need help in this... its urgent
    currently i just subscribe to a web hosting site and i need to start the private tomcat in the web server..
    The followings are the instructions and i have follow them but i do not know how to create a web.xml file to store in the folder indicated for example a HelloServlet that im testing :
    To setup servlet, you need to configure servlet into the file web.xml which needs to be placed in /var/www/html/WEB-INF directory.
    www root directory or webapps:/var/www/htm
    Classes directory located in: /var/www/html/WEB-INF/Classes/
    There you will need to upload your Java class file.
    Our default url-mapping for servlet is: /servlet/*
    To check servlet in your browser: www.mydomain.net/servlet/HelloWorld
    Jsp Files - Upload anywhere in /var/www/html
    all the above steps are follow except the web.xml file which i suppose to write and store in the folder... but i actually try to write one but i still cannot load my servlet on the webpage... test on standalone tomcat works.
    pls help its urgent!!!

    first sorry about cross posting the subject. i didnt know i am not suppose to do that. i post in a few forums that are related to my topic. sorry
    The tomcat on the web server is of version Private J2EE / Tomcat 4.1.29 and the standalone tomcat i am using is also tomcat 4.1
    the web.xml in my standalone server in root/web-inf/ is as follows and it is configure for authentication purposes. It works together with the tomcat-users.xml located on conf directory

  • Can DOCTYPE in web.xml Be "Localized"

    At times when starting WebLogic Server 5.1 (sp6) in a Windows NT
    environment, our internet connection is slow and the DTD file specified in
    the web.xml file cannot be resolved. I have been able to get around this
    problem by changing the DOCTYPE in the web.xml file as follows:
    From:
    <!DOCTYPE web-app PUBLIC
    "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application2.2//EN"
    "http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_2.dtd">
    To:
    <!DOCTYPE web-app SYSTEM
    "file:/d:\weblogic\examples\webapp\ensodex\WEB-INF\web-app_2_2.dtd">
    I have placed a copy of Sun's web-app_2_2.dtd file in the specified
    directory, and WLS starts up just fine and I can access our web application
    without any problems, but ....
    Is there any way to simplify the DOCTYPE specification so that the full,
    explicit path doesn't have to be specified. A co-worker has been able to
    resolve the issue with an Orion server with the following specification,
    <!DOCTYPE web-app SYSTEM "web-app_2_2.dtd">, but I have been unable to get
    this to work in the WebLogic environment.
    I've read the BEA online documentation, and tried placing the
    web-app_2_2.dtd file under the document root (defined as
    weblogic.httpd.documentRoot=public_html/ in our weblogic.properties file,
    but WLS was still unable to locate the file.
    Our intent is to place the web-app_2_2.dtd file under WEB-INF along with the
    web.xml file since WLS is able to locate the web.xml file successfully, yet
    we don't want to have to specify an explicit path to web-app_2_2.dtd file
    since this would have to be customized each time the web application is
    installed in a different hardware/operating system environment.
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    If I remember correctly from the spec, anything that follows SYSTEM is
    basically arbitrary, meaning the parser can interpret it as it may. It is
    possible that Orion uses a different parser implementation or version. The
    other possibility has to do with where the file would have to be in order to
    be found; it might have to be in the JAR in the directory with the XML, or
    it might have to be in the "working directory" that WebLogic is launched
    from (i.e. the weblogic directory).
    When we had this problem, we inlined the DTD into the XML, which is
    supported by the XML specification.

  • How to give relative path in web.xml?

    Hi All,
    Im creating a servlet which has to load the properties file.
    I don't want to give the location of the properties file as ABSOLUTE PATH. But I'm unable to provide the same as RELATIVE PATH.
    When I give the path is given as ABSOLUTE PATH (drive:/dir/) it is working. But if I give the RELATIVE PATH(../), the same is not working.
    Kindly help me in this.
    Regards,
    Kumar Madhavan.
    My web.xml file is:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <!DOCTYPE web-app PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.2//EN" "http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_2.dtd">
    <web-app>

         <description>Application for Safety Critical Information vIew.</description>
         <welcome-file-list>
              <welcome-file>ASCII.html</welcome-file>

    <!-- This is the tag in which I would like to
              <param-value>../</param-value>
         </context-param>
    </web-app

    Hi.
    Exclude the directory path from the <param-value/> in
    the web.xml and just keep the property file name.
    Place the property file in the classpath and load it
    like this from the servlet:
    Properties props = new Properties();
    String propFileName = "" // Read param-value from web.xml
    try {
    InputStream is = TheServlet.class.getResourceAsStream(propFileName);
    props.load(is);
    } catch (Exception ex) {
    System.out.println("Prop file not in classpath!");

  • Web.xml mapping not working

    I have a servlet located at com.conversion.web called leftNavReader.java
    I'm trying to access this servlet on my localhost with the following URL: http://localhost:8080/Conversion/start
    but I keep getting this error:
    HTTP Status 404 - /Conversion/start
    type Status report
    message /Conversion/start
    description The requested resource (/Conversion/start) is not available.
    Here is what my web.xml looks like:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <web-app>
         <display-name>DataConversionWeb</display-name>
         <servlet>
              <servlet-name>start</servlet-name>
              <display-name>Start</display-name>
              <servlet-class>com.conversion.web.leftNavReader</servlet-class>
         </servlet>
         <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>start</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>/start</url-pattern>
         </servlet-mapping>
    </web-app>
    Does anyone have any idea why I'm getting this error?

    Since the spaces may cause problems and I have
    everything in the My Projects directory, I decide to
    just start from scratch. Very good.
    But... someone else
    installed eclipse for me and set that up, so I may
    need some help with that, not sure if you can help.As far as I know Eclipse can also be Unzipped to any folder, and
    theres a file called eclipse.exe , one would simply double click on that to invoke eclipse. I don't think you would have to re-install Eclipse.
    You could create a new project, and set
    C:\dev\projects\Conversion\ as your Eclipse Workspace .
    But lets put Eclipse on hold for now, we can still configure this whole project manually without Eclipse, which will help you understand what's going on under the hood. Also, in the beginning it's simpler to configure independent of the IDE.
    So I recommend that you save your work, uninstall
    Tomcat 6.0.x and re-install it on a path thatdoesn't
    have any spaces in it.
    For example:
    C:\dev\tomcat\ So I've uninstalled tomcat and re-installed in
    c:\dev\tomcat as recommended...Good, I assume that immediately under C:\dev\tomcat\ folder you see folders like bin, conf, webapps etc
    Assuming that Tomcat was Unzipped to the above
    folder. and there isn't another main folder underthe
    above folder, set you system envrionment variable
    CATALINA_HOME to the above folder.How do I do this?On MS Windows, click Start ---> Settings ----> Control Panel
    Look for System , --> Doubl Click on System -----> Click on the Advanced tab ----> then under the "System Variables" panel ------> Click on New button -------->
    in the Variable Name: type CATALINA_HOME
    in the Variable Value: type C:\dev\tomcat
    Then click Ok , that will set CATALINA_HOME to C:\dev\tomcat
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    There's a RUNNING.txt file under Tomcat's folderthat
    explains configuring it. Tomcat expects JAVA_HOMEto
    be set to your JDK's root folder . Again if JDK is
    installed on a path that has spaces then Irecommend
    installing it on a path with no spaces forexample:
    C:\dev\jdk\
    Similarly , follow the above steps to set JAVA_HOME to C:\dev\jdk
    Also, under System Variables you may see a variable called Path
    If it doesn't exist , then create a new one, if it already exists then add the following to the Path variable. (notice how the semi colon is used as a separater)
    ;%JAVA_HOME%/bin;%CATALINA_HOME%/bin;
    By setting the above you will be able to call
    java , javac and Tomcat's startup.bat and shutdown.bat from anywhere on the DOS Command line.
    >>
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I've moved the jdk to the director as recommended,
    but not sure hot to set the JAVA_HOME.See above...
    I haven't even gotten through the rest of your post
    yet, as I need to work on getting Eclipse set up
    again too Leave Eclipse for later ---- it will just complicate things for now.
    Once you have the project runnun under Tomcat we can figure out Eclipse.
    and I figure I might as well set up my
    "new" project using Virtual Hosts from the beginningLeave Virtual Host for later ------ it is easy to understand , I will explain it later , once you have the above basic set up running.
    and do this right... This is quite the learning
    experience ;)First , second and third time it is... but if you do this often, it will get much easier.
