Weblogic workshop based webapp - performance tuning

We have built webapp is using WLW8.1SP5. It is simple webapp that is serving a page with 4 gifs. The performance test is being done using two WL servers (1GB JVM RAM) each on dual core 4 CPU Linux with 16G RAM on the servers. The CPU utilization etc is very low but page visits are limited to 70 per second across the two instances and the response time is little over 1 sec. there is no DB interaction for rendering the page.
Quite surprised by the high response time given the simolicity of the page and horsepower available on the machines.
Seeking help for suggestions as to what to look for in WLW confiuration file/parameter from performance tuning perspective? the garbage collector is behaving normally, cpu is not more than 30% at 70 page visits per second, heapsize is also not the bottleneck, nor Weblogic execute thread counts.

Hi Tariq,
You could make sure the server is running production mode and the workshop runtime is also set to production mode.
The weblogic.jws.ProductionMode=true property in the startweblogic.cmd file affect this
the following url discusses additional in on deploying a workshop application to production
http://e-docs.bea.com/workshop/docs81/doc/en/workshop/guide/howdoi/howDeployWebLogicWorkshopWebServicestoaProductionServer.html
just curios.. do you have plans to upgrade to a newer version of Workshop ? If yes, which version are you looking at
thanks

    Guys,
    I am good in SAP J2EE Engine Performance Tuning. I would like to learn SAP ABAP Based Server Performance tuning end to end. Please recommend me some links/docs to start with the performance tuning for different OS like HP-UX/AIX & for Databases : Oracle/MaxDB etc.
    Thank you in advance.
    Cheers, Karthick

    Hi Karthick, for example for SAP with Oracle on AIX -->
    white paper -->
    http://www-03.ibm.com/support/techdocs/atsmastr.nsf/WebIndex/WP100377
    But SAP with Oracle tuning are usually not very much dependent on the platform, of course there are differences but they are not much.
    Personally, I bought the SAP Performance Optimization Guide -->

    Nice books. Regards.

  • Consuming Weblogic Workshop WebService

    Hi,
    I am getting an error running the generated client stubs for a weblogic workshop based document style webservice. (I don't have a problem with a rpc style webservice in the same configuration.)
    The error is to do with extracting the return string/int and fromElement is reporting a classcast exception. Using tcp monitor I have seen the return message and it seems fins. There is no 'xsi:type' attribute on the return xml element.
    Also I can't seem to access the xmlelement value, the return string/int in the debugger watch window. I have casted the element to a node and getValue on the node returns null.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Eclipse/Workshop 9.2 Performance

    While I do like the integration of the BEA Workshop tools into Eclipse, the end result (so far, that is) is unacceptible. It simply is way too slow. Are there tuning documents on how we can speed things up? I've got a 3.6GHZ Pentium 4 with 2gb of RAM, and it can take up to 4 minutes to publish a simple JSP change to the local server domain. Just saving files seems to launch so many different builders that I wind up losing 30 seconds at a time. I never faced this type of performance with Eclipse and 'generic' WTP.

    Speaking for the Portal product team, we are well aware that the existing performance of the technical preview 2 is not where we need it to be for GA. However, it's important to understand that isn't completely unexpected; this is the phase of the release where the performance teams are able to get to work and make many of the optimizations that will ship with GA.
    Some of the goals for performance for the Portal are the following:
    For all capabilities that exist in Portal 8.1 and are essentially being carried forward to 9x, we are shooting for those to have 8.1 SP4 and SP5 or better performance.
    New capabilities, such as GroupSpace, should provide a very usable out-of-the-box experience when it comes to performance. As the virtual content repository provides the back-end store for much of the GroupSpace related content, much effort is being put into performance of that core service to improve it beyond Portal 8.1.
    As to how we are doing the work, we have a good sized and highly skilled performance team that is running a huge number of performance analysis tests across all of the Portal features. This is the same group that is responsible for the Portal 8.1 performance and capacity planning guides available at:
    •     http://edocs.bea.com/wlp/docs81/perftune/index.html
    •     http://edocs.bea.com/wlp/docs81/capacityplanning/index.html
    One of the things that we do know at this time is that for a development environment, we are going to suggest having a greater amount of ram available then for Portal 8.1 with WebLogic Workshop. However, it should be reasonably inline with what any Eclipse based development environment requires today. As some people have noted, some of the performance issues with the technical preview 2 center around the iterative development experience. In the coming months those will be greatly optimized to meet expectations; right now the goal was to allow a preview of the forthcoming capabilities less then to provide a tuned environment… and we are taking your feedback in this area very seriously.
    Fundamentally, we have also introduced and improved several new core concepts to move our customers away from the ‘uber-portal’ model where all portal assets are contained in the same J2EE application. These models allow faster development and the ability to break large scale Portal development into multiple, independent release cycles. The two primary means to accomplish this are:
    •     Remote Portal via WSRP. By separating out the production of portlets from their consumption in a single rendering container, developers can concentrate on producing portlets in isolation. Practically speaking, this means that portlet developers do not need to build the entire portal with all containing portlets to get their work done. WSRP and BEA also provide an interportlet communication model which is essential to having a ‘contract’ between developers to allow for events and information to be passed where needed via a declarative mechanism. WSRP is available today in Portal 8.1, and has new improvements in Portal 9x.
    •     Library Modules. The WebLogic Portal team worked closely with the WebLogic Server 9 team to introduce a new model for storing ‘libraries’ of reusable code assets, from JSP pages and tag libraries, to entire Portal look and feel constructs and EJBs. These libraries are leveraged by the Portal so that most all the assets that used to live in your customer authored application (and were built by Workshop) are now instead referenced at runtime as a declarative include. As well, the library facility can be leveraged by customers and partners for your own code assets, allowing you to take portlets and other libraries, compile them, and then integrate them into numerous other products without introducing all the IDE overhead. When creating a new Portal application in the tech preview, you can see some of these capabilities exposed.
    Please continue to send us feedback on the tech preview 2; and to track this newsgroup for future updates.
    Thanks,
    Josh Lannin

  • Performance tuning of BPEL processes in SOA Suite 11g

    Hi,
      We are working with a customer for performance tuning of SOA Suite 11g, one of the areas is to tune the BPEL processes. I am new to this and started out with stress testing Hello World process using SOAPUI tool. I would like help with the below topics -
    1. How do I interpret the statistics collected during stress testing? Do we have any benchmark set that can indicate that the performance is ok.
    2. Do we need to run stress tests for every BPEL process deployed?
    2. Is there any performance tuning strategy documentation available? Or can anybody share his/her experiences to guide me?
    Thanks in advance!

    1. How do I interpret the statistics collected during stress testing? Do we have any benchmark set that can indicate that the performance is ok.
    You need
    pay attention to:
    java heap usage vs java heap capacity
    java eden usage vs java eden capacity
    JDBC pool initial connections vs JDBC pool capacity connections
    if you are using linux: top
    if you are using aix: topas
    2. Do we need to run stress tests for every BPEL process deployed?
    yes, you need test each BPEL. You can use "Jmeter" tool.
    Download Jmeter from here: Apache JMeter - Apache JMeter™
    Other tools:
    jstat
    jstack
    jps -v
    Enterprise Manager
    WebLogic Console

  • Performance Tuning in IR

    Hello All,
    We have created some reports using Interactive Reporting Studio. The volume of data in that Oracle database are huge and in some tables of the relational database are having above 3-4 crores rows individually. We have created the .oce connection file using the 'Oracle Net' option. Oracle client ver is 10g. We earlier created pivot, chart and report in those .bqy files but had to delete those where-ever possible to decrease the processing time for getting those report generated.
    But deleting those from the file and retaining just the result section (the bare minimum part of the file) even not yet helped us out solving the performance issue fully. Still now, in some reports, system gives error message 'Out of Memory' at the time of processing those reports. The memory of the client PCs,wherefrom the reports are being generated are 1 - 1.5 GB. For some reports, even it takes 1-2 hours for saving the results after process. In some cases, the PCs gets hanged at the time of processing. When we extract the query of those reports in sql and run them in TOAD/SQL PLUS, they take not so much time like IR.
    Would you please help us out in the aforesaid issue ASAP? Please share your views/tips/suggestions etc in respect of performance tuning for IR. All reply would be highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Raj

    SQL + & Toad are tools that send SQL and spool results; IR is a tool that sends a request to the database to run SQL and then fiddles with the results before the user is even told data has been received. You need to minimize the time spent by IR manipulating results into objects the user isn't even asking for.
    When a request is made to the database, Hyperion will wait until all of the results have been received. Once ALL of the results have been received, then IR will make multiple passes to apply sorts, filters and computed items existing in the results section. For some unknown reason, those three steps are performed more inefficiently then they would be performed in a table section. Only after all of the computed items have been calculated, all filters applied and all sorts sorted, then IR will start to calculate any reports, charts and pivots. After all that is done, the report stops processing and the data has been "returned"
    To increase performance, you need to fine tune your IR Services and your BQY docs. Replicate your DAS on your server - it can only transfer 2g before it dies, restarts and your requested document hangs. You can replicated the DAS multiple times and should do so to make sure there are enough resources available for any concurrent users to make necessary requests and have data delivered to them.
    To tune your bqy documents...
    1) Your Results section MUST be free of any sorts, filters, or computed items. Create a staging table and put any sorts or local filters there. Move as many of your computed items to your database request line and ask the database to make the calculation (either directly or through stored procedures) so you are not at the mercy of the client machine. Any computed items that cannot be moved to the request line, need to be put on your new staging table.
    2) Ask the users to choose filters. Programmatically build dynamic filters based on what the user is looking for. The goal is to cast a net only as big as the user needs so you are not bringing back unnecessary data. Otherwise, you will bring your server and client machines to a grinding halt.
    3) Halt any report pagination. Built your reports from their own tables and put a dummy filter on the table that forces 0 rows in the table until the report is invoked. Hyperion will paginate every report BEFORE it even tells the user it has results so this will prevent the user from waiting an hour while 1000s of pages are paginated across multiple reports
    4) Halt any object rendering until request. Same as above - create a system programmically for the user to tell the bqy what they want so they are not waiting forever for a pivot and 2 reports to compile and paginate when they want just a chart.
    5) Saved compressed documents
    6) Unless this document can be run as a job, there should be NO results stored with the document but if you do save results with the document, store the calculations too so you at least don't have to wait for them to pass again.
    7) Remove all duplicate images and keep the image file size small.
    Hope this helps!
    PS: I forgot to mention - aside from results sections, in documents where the results are NOT saved, additional table sections take up very, very, very small bits of file size and, as long as there are not excessively larger images the same is true for Reports, Pivots and Charts. Additionally, the impact of file size only matters when the user is requesting the document. The file size is never an issue when the user is processing the report because it has already been delivered to them and cached (in workspace and in the web client)

    Sanjeev,
    The exception you mentioned about changing the namespace should not cause
    the behavior that you are noticing.
    The exception that you are receiving states that your ColdFusion application
    is not able to access the Workshop Web Service.
    Are both coldfusion and Workshop on the same physical machine ?
    If they are not on the same machine.
    Are you able to access the wsdl via a browser from the machine on which
    coldfusion installed ?
    The wsdl has an service name tag
    - <port name="SimpleTestSoap" binding="s0:SimpleTestSoap">
    <soap:address location=http://localhost:7001/Raj/SimpleTest.jws />
    </port>
    This address location is be default the machine on which this Web Service is
    built, and this defaults to localhost:7001.
    This entry can be modified by editing the weblogic-jws-config.xml file found
    in the WEB-INF/lib folder of the project.
    Can you make sure that address location contains the correct address and
    also check to see if the Web Service is available via any browser.
    Hope this help.
    Thanks

    Hello there,
    I am trying to access a very simple webservice developed in WebLogicWorkshop
    (say something like HelloWorld.jws) from a ColdFusion application.However, I
    get an Axis fault on Coldfusion implying that it could not invoke therequired
    method. I am running the examples server and the work shop. I noticed thatsome
    of the documentation mention changing the namespace fromhttp://www.openuri.com
    to something else.
    Does that have to do anything with the service not being able to beinvoked or
    it could be something else?
    Could not perform web service invocation "Hello" because AxisFaultfaultCode:

  • Oracle Performance Tuning Certification

    Hi Guys
    I am going for 10g OCP then maybe 11g Tuning Expert Certification.
    1. I look at the prerequisites of 10g Performance Tuning course:
    Required Prerequisites:
    * Knowledge of Database Administration
    * Oracle Database 10g: Administration Workshop I Release 2
    * Oracle Database 10g: Administration Workshop II
    * Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Administrators Release 2
    Does this mean that it is COMPULSORY that I take the 3 courses above first before I can take the Performance tuning course? This cost a lot of $$$! ; o
    2. Where can I get 11gTuning Expert Certification practice questions? From the 11g Performance Tuning course? Couldn't find it in SelfTestSoftware....
    Advance thanks!

    Hi,
    Exam # 1Z0-044 does not exist.
    Why there is no Oracle exam for Performance Tuning for 10g?
    There is one for 9i and there will be one for 11g (currently it is in beta).
    Lorrys,
    I guess this needs to be corrected a bit. 9i exam is a part of teh OCP track, its not an individual exam which you may clear and would be awarded an certification for it. OCE is itself is an certification track and unlikely OCP, it doesn't need multiple exams to be cleared. You just have to clear one exam and youwould be awarded teh certification. Now, about the 10g exam of PT OCE not being there and given in 11g, it should make sense as 11g is already out and there is no point in launchnig a NEW certification track for a previous version. So that's why 11g PT is launched for the newest release, which is 11g.
    That said, I am not from Oracle so its just my own opinion about your comment.

  • Performance Tuning 10g

    Hi All,
    I had given a task to tune oracle 10g database. I am really new in memory tuning although I had some SQL Tuning earlier. My server is in remote location and I can not login to Enterprise Manager GUI. I will be using SQL Developer or PL/SQL Developer for this. My application is web based application.
    I have following queries with this respect:
    - How should I start... Should I use tkprof or AWR.
    - How to enable these tools.
    - How to view its reports
    - What should I check in these reports
    - Will just increasing RAM improves performance or should we also increase Hard Disk?
    - What is CPU Cost and I/O?
    Please help.
    Thanks & Regards.

    Thanks & Regards.Here is something you might try as a starting point:
    Capture the output of the following (to a table, send to Excel, or spool to a file):
    SELECT
      STAT_NAME,
      VALUE
    FROM
      V$OSSTAT
    ORDER BY
      STAT_NAME;
    SELECT
      STAT_NAME,
      VALUE
    FROM
      V$SYS_TIME_MODEL
    ORDER BY
      STAT_NAME;
    SELECT
      EVENT,
      TOTAL_WAITS,
      TOTAL_TIMEOUTS,
      TIME_WAITED
    FROM
      V$SYSTEM_EVENT
    WHERE
      WAIT_CLASS != 'Idle'
    ORDER BY
      EVENT;Wait a known amount of time (5 minutes or 10 minutes)
    Execute the above SQL statements again.
    Subtract the starting values from the ending values, and post the results for any items where the difference is greater than 0. The Performance Tuning Guide (especially the 11g version) will help you understand what each item means.
    To repeat what Ed stated, do not randomly change parameters (even if someone claims that they have successfully made the parameter change 100s of times).
    You could also try a Statspack report, but it might be better to start with something which produces less than 70 pages of output.

  • Oracle query performance tuning

    Hi
    I am doing Oracle programming.Iwould like to learn Query Performance Tuning.
    Could you guide me , like how could i learn this online, which books to refer.
    Thank you

    I would recommend purchasing a copy of Cary Millsap's book now:
    http://www.amazon.com/Optimizing-Oracle-Performance-Cary-Millsap/dp/059600527X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1248985270&sr=8-1
    And Jonathan Lewis' when you feel you are at a slightly more advanced level.
    http://www.amazon.com/Cost-Based-Oracle-Fundamentals-Experts-Voice/dp/1590596366/ref=pd_sim_b_2
    Both belong in everyone's bookcase.

  • LDAP Performance Tuning In Large Deployments - dir_chkcredentialsonreadonly parameter

    Calendar users are experiencing long delays in logging in or updating a meeting
    with many attendees or dates. This is especially notificeable after migrating
    from calendar server 1.0x to calendar server 3.x.
    <P>
    At this time, calendar performance can be improved by up to 30% by reconfiguring
    the calendar server to bind to it's directory server either anonymously or with
    a specific user. The default is to bind as the user requesting directory
    information.
    <P>
    There is a parameter that can be added in the server configuration file by
    editing the /users/unison/misc/unison.ini file. For anonymous binds
    adding the dir_chkcredentialsonreadonly line to the DAS section:
    <P>
    [DAS]
    dir_updcalonly = TRUE
    dir_connection = persistent
    dir_service = LDAP,v2,NSCP,1
    enable = TRUE
    dir_chkcredentialsonreadonly = FALSE
    <P>
    For binding as a specific user, also add the following to the LDAP,..,...,,
    section:
    <P>
    [LDAP...]
    binddn = dn
    bindpwd = password
    <P>
    Going forward, we are working on other changes in the next versions of the
    Calendar Client and Calendar Server to improve performance. Please check with
    your Netscape Sales contact for announcements on the availability of these
    versions.
    <P>

    Thank you very much, I am looking from now for a good performance Tuning book writen by Jonathan Lewis. I dont think Jonathan can come to Spain and give lessons...Anyway I will email to him...
    But, could you please clarify 2 points to me
    1- Should I modify manually memory parameters like buffer cache, shared pool, large pool etc...if those areas are spotted Small and areas causes of performace problem in the AWR, ADDM or ASH reports even if the memory is automatic managed ?
    In the case of yes, Why Oracle named it "Memory automatic managed" if I have to set some values of memory manually ?
    2- When ADDM report suggests me to increase the SGA size; from where ADDM got this recomandation?. I mean is it recomandation based on statistics collected of Both Oracle and OS ? I am asking this question because, from our report I ran 3 weeks ago, ADDM suggested me to increase the SGA to 10GB (total memeory of the serve is 16GB), I did the change and from that moment the server is SWAP... and now ADDM report suggests me again to increase the SGA to 12GB .
    Best reagards
