WEP and the 1522

Can the the ap1522 work with legacy wgb350s using 64 or 128 bit WEP or no encryption at all.

Hi Gordon,
This will not work due to the fact that the 1522 is LWAPP and the 350 is Autonomous;
Q. Is the Cisco Aironet 1500 Series compatible with the Cisco Aironet 1400 Series and Cisco Aironet 1300 Series?
A. The Cisco Aironet 1500 Series is LWAPP-based and will not interoperate with autonomous Cisco Aironet wireless bridges or access points such as the Cisco Aironet 1400 Series and the Cisco Aironet 1300 Series in autonomous mode. In addition, it will not bridge to the Cisco Aironet 1300 Series in lightweight mode because in lightweight mode, the Cisco Aironet 1300 Series operates only as an access point (and not a bridge). The Cisco Aironet 1500 Series will, however, co-exist in the same WLAN as a Cisco Aironet 1300 Series in lightweight mode (for example, within the same wireless LAN controller or across multiple controllers within the same mobility group), allowing a wireless client to roam seamlessly between the Cisco Aironet 1500 Series on the outdoor network and 1300 Series Access Points on the indoor network.
Cisco IOS Software-based APs (autonomous APs) that are configured as WGBs associate only with Cisco IOS Software-based APs. They cannot associate with Lightweight AP Protocol (LWAPP)-based APs. Cisco APs that are converted to lightweight mode also do not support WGB associations. This is because LWAPP devices cannot communicate with non-LWAPP devices at all.

  • AP Power difference between WEP and WPA

Can someone tell me what to look for? I have two SSIDs on an AP: one is WEP and the other is WPA.
I have 5 bars on WEP ssid, but only 2 on the WPA side and eventually down to one.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi John,
Actually your are getting the same signal from both SSID's.
The reason that your are getting 5 bars in one and 2 in the other depands on the OS wireless uitlity.
If you will use a wireless sniffer you could see the RSSI reading in the frame header.
    Cheers.

  • What do i do if my internet is wep and i need it to be wpa2 because my ipod touch 4th gen connects to the internet but when i click on safari or itunes it says safari cannot open the page because its not connected to the internet

what do i do if my internet is wep and i need it to be wpa2 because my ipod touch 4th gen connects to the internet but when i click on safari or itunes it says safari cannot open the page because its not connected to the internet. i have contacted apple support and they said to change from wep to wpa2 but when i change it to wpa2 and type in password and connect on my laptop it says the saved setting on this computer for the network do not match the require ments of the network

My 2nd gen works fine with WPA2 and AES encryption.
You may need to go back and start over.  Reset the router back to factory defaults, log on as the admin, set up security, DHCP, and make sure the IP address pool has enough IP addresses to lease to ALL of the computers/devices that will connect to that the router.

  • Can WRT54G use WPA and WEP at the same time?

I used to have a smc 802.11b wireless router and a dlink 802.11b wireless print server.
In order to have WPA and a firewall, I replaced the wireless router with a linksys WRT54G.
Then I realize the dlink print server, even though it has the "g" keyword in the model name, does not do WPA (DP-G321).
Do I have to buy a 802.11g wireless print server? Or is there another solution?
I don't supposed the linksys router can do both WPA and WEP at the same time?
Connecting the print server to the router with a cable is not feasible. They are on different floors.

both of your devices are has a wireless b technology settings, just set a wep encryption on your network rather than wpa because some wireless b devices don;t work with wpa. with regards to your query if wep and wpa can be used at the same time, the answer is no.

  • Running WEP and WPA2 on the same virtual AP

    Hi Forum,
Is it advisable to run WEP and WPA2 on the same virtual AP sharing the same antenna?
    rgds,
    paul

    Paul,
This shouldn't be a problem, so long as you have one SSID for WEP, and one SSID for WPA2. The antenna itself will not come into play for what type of encryption that is used.

  • Mixture of WEP and WPA on wireless network

I have a WRT54G and a cable modem. The router is configured to use WPA. I have many personal wireless devices (print servers, computers, access points, etc.) on my network. All are configured to use WPA. My wife and I just got company-issued laptops from our employer that have software that does not support WPA (we can't change the software). The laptops only support WEP. Is there a way to run a mixture of WEP and WPA on a wireless network? If I have to buy an additional router, that is OK. I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to run both WPA and WEP over the same internet connection.
Would MAC filtering on my current router be a possible solution?

It is not possible to use WEP & WPA at a same time in a router .....
But you can enable the MAC flitering on the router for all wireless devices ..... let me know if it works ....

  • 40 bit WEP and Windows XP

I'm still using the original AirPort, purchased February 2000, every day. What a great innovation that was...! For the first time, I hooked up a Windows (XP) computer, my neighbor's new Dell notebook. I got it working pretty quickly, although there was a problem with the WEP encryption: my AirPort offers 40 bit WEP encryption, which was unavailable on Windows XP, where you can choose either 128 or 64 bit. A research on the Internet revealed that the 64 bit encryption is also called 40-bit, so we tried that (How comes 64 can also be called 40?? Why not call it 77-bit instead???). Then there was an issue with the password: In Windows XP, it stated that the password had to be 5 characters long, whereas, in the past, I always used a much longer password. But after changing the password, the Dell was hooked up and could access the Internet. Can somebody explain this password issue? If the max. length allowed is really 5 chars, why did my computer never complain? Does the password get truncated to 5 chars without notifying me?
    Thanks for answers

Here's the link to the thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=534141&tstart=30
and in case this link doesn't work, I copied the answer:
"One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • WRT54GL Can't set WPA or WEP and connect

Okay, brand new WRT54GL, setup on the network, can connect, no problem.  If I goto setup the WPA or WEP and enter the corresponding info on the Windows machine, I can't connect to the router.  It leases an IP, and I can see in ipconfig (dhcp client) that I have a IP from the router, the new router IP (I changed it to 250 to verify I'm connecting and not getting something legacy) shows up as my router, but then I can't ping it or connect to the router in any way.  If I disable the WPA or WEP, it works fine.
Just for the record, I run WEP on everything I touch, home, work, family and friends houses when I set up their wireless, etc.  I do networking day to day, but granted I'm not changing my WEP WPA regularly (often enough to consider myself safe, but not Best Practices regularly) so I know what's up there.  But on this box, it doesn't do.  This is my first foray into the GL (I was thinking of the WRT fw's, but this isn't my box), so I didn't know if there was something different I should look at?
So, as you can probably guess, this box isn't at my house, it's at my buddies.  I can go over and check on things, but I can't do it immediately.  I'ld like to just see if maybe I overlooked something stupid.  The part that's throwing me off is that I've done this countless times.  Does this sort of thing ever happen to anyone else?  I'm trusting that one of the forum regulars can thump me on the head and I'll see clearly.  He is using it right now in unsecured mode, so no problem there.

Tried resetting about a dozen times while I was attempting this the first time.  I did that because I knew that would be the first thing I would be asked to do.
The only error I was getting was that Windows could not authenticate with the device.  (I forget the error, and did not go over there this weekend).  Wouldn't it be nice if Windows told you exactly what the error was?  What has me stymied is that Windows got it's complete DHCP info from the router, but wouldn't let me connect to the router (or anything else) so obviously it did auth at some point.

  • TS3274 I have an iPad 2 that was dropped and the glass broke.

I have an iPad 2 that was dropped and the glass broke around Christmas break.  I took it to a local computer repair company and they changed the glass.  However, ever since that time I have had some problems with the wifi.  I do not have the range I once had? For example I can walk out of the room that my verizon jetpack is in and loose connection.  I have also had issues with my Keynote presentations loosing connectivity to Apple TV through the blue tooth.  Q What are my options beside getting a new iPad?

Some iPad users have been able to revive their dropped iPad. Turn the iPad over and give it a HARD SLAP on the back. May take several slaps.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Wireless speed difference with WEP and WPA2?

I am connecting to my FiOS router wirelessly, since I was new on wireless networking, I did lots of reading they all say WEP encryption is flawed, and WPA2 should be used instead. So I changed the router's default WEP to WPA2 the same day I got FiOS installed. When I check about 10 of my neighbor's wireless networks, 8 of them using WEP, 1 has Security Disabled(D'oh), and I am the only one using WPA2-personal. My question is will I see any connection speed difference between using WEP and WPA2?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

in every day use, your experience will vary.  There is more "going on" with WPA and WPA2 than with WEP, such as message checking and encryption key changes for each data transmission, so these, combined with other possibilities inherent in computer-connected-to-internet use, can slow you down.  Another factor:  There will be more administrative overhead to use WPA or WPA2.  such as if you ever have to reset the router (to default settings), the default is WEP, so you have to go into the router to then chage it (or import a config file you previously saved on your PC).   AND If you need to call verizon tier one tech support, they only support default settings.  Their premium service is called Expert Care.

  • Coexistance WEP and WPA

I try to configure 2 ssid's for 1131 autonomous AP. One SSID with open authentication and WEP encryption and the other SSID using WPA. The "WEP-SSID" is in guest-mode. So i can see the "WEP-SSID" in the list of available W-Lans on a notebook but WPA protected and not WEP protected. An other issue is the unability to get a IP address from a DHCP server for wireless stations using the "WEP-SSID"-network. Any ideas for these behavior ?

Make sure the DHCP server is in the same subnet as wireless client. If it is in the different subnet, ensure that reachability is there between these devices. Send me the debug ip dhcp enable command and send me the debug output.

  • Can WPA Security work between a Vista Ultimate client and the VersaLink 7500 Modem?

Could not get this to work.  I specified WPA Any and created my own 8-ASCII character case-sensitive WPA key. Ussed this info on the Vista side to create a wireless connection.  Would not connect.
Verizon Support tells me WPA does not work betyween Vista and the 7500 modem.  Only WEP works.
And, BTW, my laptop is less than 6 months old and is  draft-N wireless compatible.
Why do I care?  Because Microsffoft recommends AGAINST using WEP - it is not very secure.  I will quote them, below from the Vista Help File.
Wikipedia says, "Despite its weaknesses, WEP is still widely in use.[3] WEP is often the first security choice presented to users by router configuration tools even though it provides a level of security that deters only unintentional use, leaving the network vulnerable to deliberate compromise.[4]
    Thanx for all help.
If you plan to have a wireless network, you should set it up so that only people you choose can access it. Here are a few options for wireless network security.
     Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)
WPA encrypts information, and it also checks to make sure that the network security key has not been modified. WPA also authenticates users to help ensure that only authorized people can access the network.
There are two types of WPA authentication: WPA and WPA2. WPA is designed to work with all wireless network adapters, but it might not work with older routers or access points. WPA2 is more secure than WPA, but it will not work with some older network adapters. WPA is designed to be used with an 802.1X authentication server, which distributes different keys to each user. This is referred to as WPA-Enterprise or WPA2-Enterprise. It can also be used in a pre-shared key (PSK) mode, where every user is given the same passphrase. This is referred to as WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal.
     Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
WEP is an older network security method that is still available to support older devices, but it is no longer recommended. When you enable WEP, you set up a network security key. This key encrypts the information that one computer sends to another computer across your network. However, WEP security is relatively easy to crack.WarningWe don't recommend using WEP. WPA or WPA2 are more secure. If you try WPA or WPA2 and they don't work, we recommend that you upgrade your network adapter to one that works with WPA or WPA2.

    VersaLink 7500 User Guide.pdf
Having taken a quick look see in the  User Guide, it seems the 7500 is WPA capable; there's one way to find out for certain.
