WGM & LDAP / Slow / Tried everything

Hi, I have no more ideas, so hopefully some expers here have a good tipp.
When I start WGM it takes very long to get the LDAP stuff listed. Clicking an account / group to display details take very long too.
Normally this is caused by some DNS problems. So I checked mine:
s1:~ admin$ sudo changeip -checkhostname
Password:
Primary address     = 95.156.192.235
Current HostName    = s1.saphirion.com
DNS HostName        = s1.saphirion.com
The names match. There is nothing to change.
dirserv:success = "success"
IMO looks good so far. So, next check.
s1:~ admin$ dig s1.saphirion.com

The only suspicous thing could be that the correct answer comes from 127.0.0.1. Not sure if this is a problem.
Ok, and the reverse check:

So, all this looks good to me. I don't see any problems in the log files.
When I start WGM it wants to connect to: s1.local
I have tried: localhost, 127.0.0.1, s1.saphirion.com, 95.156.192.235 as server-address but without any success.
Any ideas what I can check / try now?

For starters, your external DNS looks unusually complex:
s1.saphirion.com.          1800          IN          CNAME          eth0.s1.saphirion.com.
eth0.s1.saphirion.com.          1800          IN          A          95.156.192.235
That's from a forward translation of the specified domain.  Your reverse DNS does not match your forward DNS; your A record.
That you have a local DNS server here and public static IP address also implies you might be running a split-horizon DNS configuration.  (Do you have a reason for that?  Do you have any NAT involved?)

  • SharePoint Slow - Tried everything I could find

Our SharePoint 2010 site has been running very slowly all week. We installed updates on the server and rebooted this past weekend if that matters. It's slow site-wide and it also takes a long time to open files (.xlsx, .docx, etc.). We don't have many
files, and each library has less than 20 or so files.
SharePoint runs on a VM with SQL installed on it as well. It has four virtual cores running at generally 1-5% usage and 6GB RAM, with 3GB in use typically. There is 400GB free on the VHD.
I've tried everything I could find online on how to fix or increase performance.
    No custom web-parts or CSS
There is no search service or crawling running. One suggestion was to disable the Search Service Application, but that's missing from my Central Admin page.
There is no anti-virus running on the server.
The database growth thing is set fairly high.
I exported a certificate (SharePointRootAuthority.cer) and stored it in the Trusted Certs store
I did a developer console thing (F12) in IE and ran a UI responsiveness test. It shows several 10-15 second HTTP requests for things like JavaScript. It also takes about 5 seconds to get the page itself.
    Any ideas?

What I'm afraid is ... SQL is very greedy about RAM. It sucks up RAM when it finds it available.
So when you call for SharePoint Web, the w3wp process would have to fight for RAM, and everything would be constantly changing from memory to swap. Performance Monitors can
acknowledge that. Or you can inspect high I/O on disk, and see if it happens on pagefile.sys, or tempDB.ndf.
Another thing that happens with low RAM available, is that IIS Application Pools think they're exceeding a Memory Limit and they're constantly recycling.
With the built-in database engine you get from a SharePoint single-server installation, that is avoided, kinda.

  • Lightroom 4.4 very slow - tried everything

    Hi all...
Lightroom 4.4 is very slow for me... everything takes longer than it should and it's driving me nuts. Can anyone help?
    Some details:
I have LR 4.4 on a Macbook Air. I have two libraries:
    Internal - 5,000 photos
    External Drive - 21,000 photos
My external drive is not connected and I am working with photos on the internal drive... so it's only 5k photos.
I've already tried all of the troubleshooting tips:
    Purged camera raw cache
Increased camera raw cache to 3GB
Purged video cache (even though I have no video files in LR)
    Deleted all previews (8GB worth)
    Optimized catalog
    Restarted LR
My Macbook Air has 30GB of memory free.
Any suggestions? It's driving me nuts.
    Thanks!

I can now report from both sides of the fence. Up until yesterday, I had a four-year old Core2Duo system, 8GB, that had the dreaded slowness. Not as bad as described above perhaps, but there was clearly something not working as it should. Using matrix-based monitor profiles and updating video card drivers relieved some of the symptoms, but the disease was still there.
At the same time I used an i5 16GB system that was much better. Not good (as in instantaneous), but acceptable.
This morning I fired up my new system for the first time and sent it on its maiden voyage. Naturally the first thing I did was open Lightroom 4.3, and...yes. So that's how it's supposed to work! Snappy, immediately responsive, switching images like nothing ever happened.
    Phew.
Now this is a pretty high-spec'ed machine, i7-3820, Asus P9X79 pro, 32GB, SSD. Let's not hope these are the real requirements for good Lightroom performance. But I did reuse the old video card, an ATI 6670 running the 12.8 driver, and it works just fine.
At the moment it's a pretty lean setup: Aside from mobo and video drivers I've only installed Lightroom, CS 5.5 Design Premium and Eizo calibration software. Anti-virus, mouse and keyboard drivers, file synchronization software, font manager and Office remain. I'll keep a close look at how Lightroom behaves as these are added.
Bottom line, and there's no doubt about it: Brilliant as it is, there is sickness in the Lightroom code somewhere. For some people, the unlucky ones,  the symptoms are bad. Most people get away with a mild flu, and some are immune.

  • LR5 and ACR glacially slow; tried everything

I built a custom PC for photo editing and it has been a profound disappointment. Performance with both Adobe Camera RAW through Bridge CC and Lightroom 5 are glacial. Ten seconds for a preview, 6 seconds for a 1:1 zoom, 4-5 seconds for a visual response to each individual adjustment, etc.
    Here are key components:
    OS - Windows 8.1 PRO 64-bit
    CPU - AMD FX-6350 CPU
    Mobo - AsRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
    RAM - 32GB Crucial Ballistix RAM DDR3 1600
    Boot SSD - Samsung 840 250GB MZ-7TD250BW SSD
    Footage SSD - Kingston SV300S37A/240G 240GB SSD
    Video Card - EVGA 02G-P4-3658-KR 2GB GTX 650 Ti
    Lightroom Version - 5.3 64-bit
    Adobe Camera RAW CC
Here are steps I've taken to alleviate issue, all without success:
    Optimized catalog, LR5 settings, etc
    Updated video driver
    Reinstalled Lightroom
    Reinstalled Windows 8.1
Transitioned footage from 7200rpm HDD to new SSD
Overclocked PC from 3.9ghz to 4.3ghz
Converted RAW files to DNG (Sony a57 is my camera model)
    Created new catalog
    Increased LR cache to 64gb
    Installed Windows 7 for comparison
Developed new smart, standard, and 1:1 previews
Deleted preferences folder and started anew
    Changed monitor color profiles (Acer H226HQLbid > sRGB 2.1 > sRGB 4)
Created new catalog with only ~50 images
Ran Memtest86; no RAM errors. Speed, timing, voltage are at proper stock values
    Updated SSD firmware
Secure-erased and reformatted OS and footage SSD drives
Ensured that 'auto-write to XMP' was deactivated
Ensured that 'Default' metadata setting was active
None of these steps have resulted in any noticeable improvement. LR5 hangs, crashes, and lags upon every single adjustment. Adobe Camera RAW CC behaves the same way. I am desperate.

    I AM SO HAPPY!
As I mentioned earlier, I deleted Avast Antivirus in favor of the stock Windows 8.1 AV, called 'Windows Defender'.  My malware program is (and has been) MalwareBytes.
I've been throwing adjustments at LR5 like Ali jabs on Frazier... what a breeze.  Changing AV programs has solved the issue.
This computer is horsing through lengthy edit sessions while immediately providing visual response to my changes.  Applications of VSCO presets take ~4-5 seconds to complete, but that's not much of a holdup considering how many adjustments go into those presets.
I've had some other minor issues in the past with Avast (sometimes interferes with Windows Installer).  This, however, is the exclamation point on my official "DO NOT RECOMMEND!" stamp.  With Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit and Lightroom 5 64-bit, Avast Antivirus (in my experience) was at fault for all of the sluggishness, crashing, and hanging.
Sincerely, thank you all so much for your help.  Several of you provided intelligent troubleshooting suggestions; thank you.  This was a tremendously frustrating issue and your help has seen to its resolution.  If you stop by Tacoma, WA, I'll buy any of you a beer!

  • My macbook pro is slow and gets the loading wheel often - Tried everything, been recommended to start using time machine

Hey, my macbook pro started going slow out of nowhere and gets the loading wheel often, I can't close it without the charger attached otherwise it heats up real bad. I've been told to get a hard drive and back up everything through time machine and then reinstall it but wouldn't that just carry over whatever problem I'm having. I've tried everything that I've found on here like going into disk utility and repairing anything broken, I checked my memory and all that and it was good but I deleted anything unnecessary and put all my music and movies onto an external hard drive.

If you don't already have backups, and you have any data that you want to keep, shut down the computer immediately and don't turn it on again until you have at least one external hard drive to use for backing up. Then see below.

  • Terribly slow system. Tried everything.

OK, so my wife has this Mid-2012 MBP which had Lion installed and worked without a flow, no problems of any kind. Then we downloaded Mavericks and her Mac became unusable, literally you couldn't listen to a song in Itunes without it getting interrupted every 3 seconds (literally!). I checked the Mavericks forums and found many others were having similar problems, so I thought that was the problem. Anyway, I tried to solve it with Mavericks first: Ran Apple Hardware Test, no problems found. Repaired disk, repaired permissions, resetted PRAM, resetted SMC, repaired keychains, uninstalled apps. Nothing, Unusable.
Since I had Mountain Lion and I actually use it in my own MBP without any issues, I decided to completely erase her disk and make a clean ML installation. After sorting out the ML installation problems (i.e., reset the PRAM so the installer can actually finish!) ML installed. I let Spotlight indexing all night long and then checked the system. While it's way better than how it was in Mavericks (I am currently typing this in her Mac) it's nowhere near acceptable. The system seems to suddenly hang with no reason. No program or process is seen in Activity Monitor when this happens and there's quite enough free RAM. While typing this, I had to wait 2 times already (a 1 minute pause first, then a 20 seconds pause) because of this behaviour. Itunes is able to play maybe 1 complete song but the pauses come sooner or later.
Needless to say I have tried everything once again: Repair disk, repair permissions (which for some reason don't get repaired, but I doubt this is the cause of problems), running manteinance (with Onyx), reset the PRAM, reset the SMC. You name it.
I am starting to think it COULD be a hardware issue (I still think is very suspicious that all problems started the moment we installed Mavericks) but now I can not run AHT because it seems is not installed and for some reason the internet recovery doesn't work. It didn't pointed any error when I ran it the first time, though. Anyway, I just want to ask if there's any other thing I could try before taking the MBP to an Apple Center, cause I have some not-so-good experience with Apple "geniuses" and many times I have solved problems when their answer was "replace the disk" or something like that. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • Backup Extremely Slow. Tried Everything. Please Help.

I am doing my first backup with an external HD (160GB, USB 2.0) and Time Machine. It has been an hour and only a little bit more than 1GB out of 90GB have been backed up. I googled around and tried everything including reformatting the HD to Mac OS Expanded (Journal), turning off spotlight, unmounting and remounting the HD, removing "inprogress" file... None of them work for me. I don't have anti-virus software installed, either.
That the backup will take 4 days is unthinkable. Could anyone help?

Does that hour include the "preparing" time? If so, that's not a good measure. On your initial backup, TM does a "deep traversal," examining every folder on your system, before it starts copying data. With 90 gb to back up, that might take half an hour or more.
Also, your TM disk may not be large enough to keep backups for long. The rule of thumb is, TM needs 2 - 3 times the space of what it's backing-up. This varies greatly, of course, depending on how you use your Mac, but TM may not be able to keep your backups for very long.
I googled around and tried everything including reformatting the HD to Mac OS Expanded (Journal),
Did you set the right *Partition Map Scheme?* It must be GUID for an Intel Mac, +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac. Check the first line of the drive via Disk Utility. If that's not right, you must stop TM and reformat it properly. See item 5 of the +Frequently Asked Questions+ post at the top of this forum.
    removing "inprogress" file...
That is dangerous and usually unnecessary and just makes the next backup run longer. Do it only as a last resort.
Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).
An explanation of some of the common messages are in item 7 of the post referenced above.

  • All of you who use the 80gb ipod classic and have problems with it freezing and syncing with itunes...well I have joined the club. This is a serious issue with apple and they need to correct it. I have tried everything to no avial.

This is beyond frustrating. I just wasted 70 dollars between a new battery and gas for my ipod 80gb classic. It was having major issues syncing and freezing with itunes. I tried everything possible and noticed that a lot of people have been having the same issues with their ipod classics as well. I must have restored it several times and now it just totally bit the dust. Now I have to shell out 130 dollars to send it in to apple to be rebuilt/fixed. This is nonsense and I just cant believe apple isn't doing anything to address this issue. My ipod was doing great for about nearly 5 years and now  this. I even down-graded to itunes 10.7, but by the time I had it set up to try, that's when my ipod totally failed and will not even come on. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

  • Mail won't open. . .  I think I've tried EVERYTHING!

Okay. I think I've tried EVERYTHING to get Mail to work on my Powerbook G4, 1.33 GHz/1.25 GB.
Here's the backstory. A few weeks ago, all my applications kept quitting unexpectedly. I got kernel panics all the time, and eventually got a persistent kernel panic when trying to start the computer.
I troubleshooted at home and reinstalled the OS, troubleshooted at the store, finally sent it in. The computer is out of warranty, so I paid the flat service fee to have the computer fixed. They definitely replaced the logic board, and may or may not have replaced the hard drive.
Got the computer back, and started having problems again - applications quitting and got kernel panics. Over the phone, the mac people decided I probably had a problem with my extra memory (which I upgraded to when I bought the computer; customized it). They sent new memory, I installed it.
So, the computer starts now, and now no kernel panics. BUT, lots of my applications keep quitting - Mail is the worst. It won't open at all.
To sum up: new logic board, maybe a new hard drive, new memory. That's pretty much a whole new computer, right? Minus the hard drive, if they didn't actually do that.
Here's the error I get: "The application Mail quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open teh application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple."
When I click Reopen (or Try Again, which seems to be an option every other time), it crashes. I try reporting, but obviously that doesn't help anything.
    Things I've tried:
-taking the Mail folder out of preferences in ~Library
-taking the Mail folder out of the Caches in ~Library
-taking the Mail folders out of the Library folder for the whole computer
    -restarting in safe mode
    ---nothing works!
So. I created another user account (as suggested in other posts), and setup the same mailboxes through mail in that account. IT WORKS ON THE NEW USER ACCOUNT.
But I don't think that it's a problem with a specific message, because I'm having problems with other applications. . . iChat, iCal, sometimes Safari. . .
Here's the most recent crash log. . . I wasn't sure how much to put in because, while I am generally very informed, I also don't actually know anything.

    HEEEEELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP!
    -polly

    Hi Polly.
What I would have suggested in your case is the following.
Verify/repair the startup disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
The problem is probably that either ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist or a cache file or one of the files stored in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ has become corrupt. If you have a backup, use it to restore those files. If not, you may try removing them one at a time, as follows:
    1. Quit Address Book, Mail, and any other applications that might use Address Book for something. Or just quit all applications to be on the safe side.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/. Make a backup copy of this folder, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your contacts are stored.
    3. Now, go to ~/Library/Preferences/ and move com.apple.AddressBook.plist out of there (e.g. to the Desktop). Check whether the problem is fixed.
    4. If Address Book keeps crashing, go to ~/Library/Caches/ and move the Address Book and com.apple.AddressBook folders to the Trash (there is no need to empty the Trash yet). Check whether the problem is fixed.
    5. If Address Book keeps crashing, go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ and trash any ABPerson.skIndex files you may see there. Check whether the problem is fixed.
    6. If Address Book keeps crashing, try again trashing both AddressBook.data and any ABPerson.skIndex files that may have been re-created, then rename AddressBook.data.previous to AddressBook.data.
The above procedure may introduce synchronization issues if you use .Mac or iSync to synchronize your Address Book with other computers or devices, so be sure to back up your Address Book data now if the problem is fixed.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • My Safari keeps crashing too, and I've tried everything!

My Safari keeps on crashing upon launching, just like everyone else's, it seems. I have tried everything I can find on here to fix it. I've tried erasing the cookies files. I've downloaded Pacifist and the 10.4.11 bundle, isolated Safari, and tried both updating it, then re-installnig it. I've even tried to drag the Safari icon from the Pacifist-isolated bundle onto the desktop and opening that file, but that hasn't worked either. Before a few days ago, Safari has always worked fine, and it's still working fine on my other laptop, the Powerbook, but I'm still running 10.2 on this one. Can you please help? I really need my more-advanced laptop to work. I've included the error report file. Any information you could provide would be wonderful. Thank you!

  • Xorg-server-1.2.0-2 high load, slows down everything

    I've just updated xorg-server.
After xorg started, the system is very slow... as if everything works in slowmotion. The load of X (as seen in top) is very high and slows down everything.
I've had this problem with all the beta and RC versions of xorg-server-1.2.0 that I've compiled myself. The version I'm using now from the repositories (1.2.0-2) has the same problem.
This problem happens with kernel 2.6.19-ck and 2.6.20-ck, I haven't tried other kernel versions.
Turning off EXA (that means using XAA) and/or turning off composite in xorg.conf makes X quicker (the load is also lower), but still slower than normal (with EXA, composite and xorg-server-1.1.1).
My problem is probably the same as described in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=29661
    My system:
    AMD Sempron;
    Ati Radeon 9500 using the open-source driver;
    glibc-2.5 compiled myself;
    kernel-2.6.20-ck1 compiled myself;
    kde*-3.5.6 compiled myself;
xorg-server-1.2.0-2 and all the libx*, xf86*, libdrm, libgl-dri and mesa are the newest versions from the repositories.

Alright, downgrading wasn't the solution I was looking for, so I took the path to darkness and installed the most recent proprietary ATI drivers (8.34.8). Because the laptop has some ACPI issues I have to apply two patches which in turn require a custom kernel. Needless to say the Arch fglrx driver packages don't work with this kernel. So, here's what i did:
    1) fetched the proprietary drivers from ati.com
    2) run them, looked in awe at the error message
    3) went here: http://cvs.archlinux.org/cgi-bin/viewcv … root=Extra and fetched the fglrx-kernel-2.6.20 patch.
    4)
    cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/2.6.x
    make clean
    rm -r .tmp_versions
    cd ..
    patch < /path/to/fglrx-kernel-2.6.20
    ./make.sh
    cd ..
    ./make_install.sh
    modinfo fglrx
    modprobe fglrx
    lsmod | grep fglrx
    5) Use aticonfig --initial to adapt /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    6) Restart X
I hope suspend is still working...
