What if I implement data level security using Selection formula?

Hi All,
I have a requirement to implement data level security for all the reports, the thing is, we donot have a front end application developed in java/.net or any other language, so we have only two options (as per me, if you think there are other alternatives then please share).
1) Implement security at the database level (that is use user roles in where clause which will make the where clause really complicated and hence the performance of the query will eventually decrease).
2) Retrieve the data with the flags of user role/permission on data. Use these flags in selection formula to select the needed records as per the user login.
I have already in middle of implementing the second method, thought to take suggestion from you guys, I appreciate if you could tell me the drawbacks of the method I am using, and if there is an alternative method you could think of.

Standaone Crystal Reports does not have any security option except to use Trusted Authentication when connecting to the DB. We use Microsofts NT or MS SQL Server Authentication only.
Doing this in CR Designer using flags and formula will never be secure, the user could simply change the formula etc...
Check with your DBA on how to configure AD authentication and then enable or add each user to SQL server. You may need to configure and mantain this manually depending on how you ahve your network configured.

Environment: Business Objects XI R2; Oracle 10g
Functional Requirement:
Implement row-level security using Oracleu2019s Virtual Private Databases (VPD) technology. The restriction is that the Business Objects Universe connection should use a generic/u201Capplicationu201D database user account. This will allow the organization to avoid the situation where the Business Objects password and the Oracle password need to be kept in synch.
What do we need from the Business Objects support team?
1.     Review the 2 attempted solutions that we have tried to implement
2.     Propose solutions/answers to open questions for each of the attempted solutions
3.     Propose any alternate solution that will help us implement the Function Requirement stated above
Attempted Solution 1: Connection String uses Oracle Proxy User
The connection string that is specified in the Universe is the following:
app_user[end_user]/app_user_pwdarrobaDatabase.WORLD
app_user = generic application user
end_user = the oracle account of the end user which is set using arrobaVariable('BOUSER') app_user_pwd = password of the generic application user
We have tried and implemented this in our test environment. However, we have some questions and concerns around how the connections are reused in a connection pool environment.
Open Question for Solution 1:
i. What happens when multiple proxy users try to connect on at the same time? Business Objects shares the generic app_user connect string. However, every user that logs on will have their own unique proxy user credentials. Will there be any contention involved? If so, what kind of errors can we expect?
ii. If a user logs on using his credentials (proxy user), and business objects opens up a connection to the database using that user's credentials (as the proxy user but logging in through the generic app user). Then the user exits out --> based on our test today, it seems like the database connection remains open. In that case, if another user logs on similarly with their credentials, will business objects simply assign the first users connection to that second user? If so, then our security will not work. Is there a way that Business Objects can somehow ensure that everytime we close a report, the connection is also terminated both at the BO and DB levels?
iii. Our 3rd question is general high level -> How connection pooling works in general and how it is implemented in BO, i.e. how are new connections assigned, how are they recycled, how are they closed, etc.
Attempted Solution 2: Using the ConnectInit parameter
Reading through a couple of the Business Objects documents, it states that u201CUsing the ConnectInit parameter it is possible to send commands to the database when opening the session which can be used to set database specific parameters used for optimization.u201D
Therefore, we tried to set the parameter in the Universe using several different options:

Neither of the above iterations or any variation of that seemed to work. It seems that the variable is not being set or being u201Cexecutedu201D on the database.
One of the Business Objects documents had stated that Patch ID 38, 977, 350 must be installed in our BO environments. We have verified that this patch has been applied on our system.
Open Questions for Solution 2:
How do we get the parameter ConnectInit to work? i.e. what is the proper syntax to enter and what other things do we need to check to get this to work.

the connectinit setting should look something like this:

The vpd_setup procedure (in Oracle) should look like this:

Then you can retrieve the value of the context variable in your vpd functions

How to implement data level security

How to implement data level security in BI Publihser?. I am using Obiee enterprise edition and bi publihser. My requirement is to show data based on User- Region relation ship.
User A - belongs to Eastern Region
User B - belongs to Southern Region
so if user A logged in he should see only Eastern Region report. If user B logged in He should see only Southern region. I am using direct sql to my oralce database as data source.

I am using a common database username and password for jdbc connection. what i am looking is based the BI Publihser login, is there any way?
say i have userregion table joined with fact. so that i can write a query to get the data

How to implement row level security using external tables

Hi All Gurus/ Masters,
I want to implement row level security using external tables, as I'm not sure how to implement that. and I'm aware of using it by RPD level authentication.
I can use a filter condition in my user level so that he can access his data only.
But when i have 4 tables in external tables
users
groups
usergroups
webgrups
Then in which table I need to give the filter conditions..
Pl let me know this ...

You pull the Group into a repository variable using a session variable init block, then reference that variable in the data filters either in the LTS directly or in the security management as Filters. You reference it with the syntax VALUEOF("NQ_SESSION.Variable Name")

Implementing Data level Security ?

I would like to Impelement Data level Security in Universe level itself. I have Set For users belonging to Branch (Mumbai, Delhi Etc) And One set of Users Belonging to Segment (CWG, IFA Etc) and Set of users that are combination oif Branch and Segment.
In the Universe I need to set the Security so that only the data related to them can be viewed. When I use a restriction I have to create many restirction and implement the same in Objects as required.
This consumes a lot of time. Is there a easier way out.
I have already Tables in the Database where the secuity values for the users are already stored.
Any help is welcome

Ok....But How Can I use the Restriction I have created in All the objects of the universe.
For e.g.. I have Two Classes Named Channel and Relation Manager respectively.
The Channel Class has the following Objects Namely : Channel Type, Channel Country, Channel Zone, Channel State, Channel City and Channel Name. and is Derived from BIDIMCHANNEL Table
The Relation Manager Class has following Objects Namely: RM Segment, RM City, RM Branch RM Name. and is Derived from BIDIMRM Table.
I have Created the a Restriction on Channel name By Using the Clause "BIDIMChannel.ChannelName = 'AHMEDABAD' and have assigned it to an BO User.
While using WEBI whenever I Select Anything regarding the Channel Class the restriction works fine. When We I Exclusively Select "Relation Manager" Class, the restriction is Not Applied and the entire data is visible.
Can you Suggest a manner in which the restriction given above can be applied for all the objects belonging to the universe and not just to the class objects where the restrictions are being applied.

Data level Security issue in obiee 11g

We are trying to implement data level security, let me explain the issue
The requirement is, we have 7 schools and each school has one principle , there will be a Superdintent who has 3 schools under him. so now when each principle logs in to dashboard we have a prompt for school i.e Name of school in that prompt he should see only his school and even the data of that school only which are assigned to him, now when Superdintent logs in he should see all 3 schools in the prompt and data. I have gone through this link (http://www.rittmanmead.com/2012/03/obiee-11g-security-week-row-level-security/) but could not achieve.
We are able to achieve by writing SQL in BMM layer ( LTS Table) so where ever the table is used in dashboards the security is being applied and we are able to see what we want. We want to achieve this by application role, But when we are creating session variables and applying on Application Role its not working. We want to achieve this by using Application role because suppose in other dashboards when the table is not used or pulled in, it will not work.But if we do it using application role its applies to all dashboards and data is resticted. so that when principle or Superdintent logs in automatically its restricts the data.
Below is the SQL which we used in BMM LTS, its working fine. But when the same SQL is applied in Application Role it's not working.
SQL used in session variable -

Data level security in OBIEE

We have implemented data level security by applying filters on groups in Obiee Administration tool. Here we have set filter on division(which is a column in Customer table). This is done so that user can see data for division for which he has access.
When user creates report which consists of division column filter is working fine. E.g. if user1 has access to division1
and when user1 cretes a report for (customerName,division,sales columns) he can see sales of customers belong to division1. But if user1 cretes report which does not contain division column e.g.(customerName,sales columns report) he can see all the customers sales data. How can we aoide that. We want User1 to see division1's data only irrespective whether division column is there in report or not.
Can any one suggest what should be done to achive this.

Hi friend,
You need to create group of users and then apply filters over that groups.
you should establish an additional filter for group1 (user1 belongs to group1 in your example). Follow next steps:
- Manage -> Security...
- Groups -> click right group1 and select propierties.
- Select button 'Permissions...'
- Select tab 'Filters' -> add new filter.
- On the column name select the metric you need filter, in your example, customer sales. On the column 'Business model filter' put table.division=division1

Data level Security for Oracle Apps as Source

Hi all
I need to implement Data level Security on Apps Users in OBIA
We are using Apps as source with Single sign On. I need to apply Data level security on Business Group Field.
We dont have users in OBI, we need to register apps users in OBI.
Could anybody tell me how to register Apps users in OBI???
OR tell me if you know some other way to implement D L Sec on Single sing On and Apps as source.

You need to be creating your "business groups" as a group in the RPD, init blocks to retrieve the user business group at login. Filters in the Logical table sources to restrict data to relevant business groups only.
Presentation 'Web Cat' groups with the same name as the RPD groups so a user inherits membership automatically.
I'd suggest sourcing a vanilla OBIA rpd to see how it is implemented out of the box.

Data level security for 30000 profir centers

Hello Gurus
I have a requirement to implement data level security for 30000 profit center . Now I can think of creating the groups and applying security filters ( both on Dimesion & Fact) on the top of that.
But I cannot do so as I will have to create some 30,000 groups/roles which is not possible. because there are some users who have access to only one or two profit center and it forms a heirarchy.
As a workaround what I did is created a user-profit center table and joined it with the profit center table which is actually a snowflaked with two more dimensions - gl_account & gl_segment.
In the BMM layer , in the Content section of teh profit center dimension , I applied a where filter like below :

All is well if I create a report having Profit center as one of the dimension/component in the analysis (answers) .
But when I don't take Profit center the roll up is happening with all the Profit center . Reason being I have not applied "security filter " in the fact table and I cannot do so because USER tabel is not directly joined with the fact table.
Is there any workaround for this.

Hi,
Yes, any dimension filters are applied only when you include that dimension in your analysis.
As a workaround, you could create a filter as "Profit Centre" is not equal to 'Dummy Profit Centre' with "Protect Filter as ON" and add this filter to all of your analysis.
So what it does is, even though you do not refer to profit centre dimension in your analysis, the filter in each analysis makes sure that the profit centre dimension is always mapped and the data restriction is applied.

Since it is SSO, we have users in the Apps but not in the OBIEE rpd. How to use those responsibility in our rpd and apply filters on the logical columns.
I need to filter based on the business group... Please explain in detail...

Data Level Security from rpd to Weblogic Server

Hi,
Req: To implement data level security through weblogic or external authenticator OID
Current implementation: Created a grop in rpd UserG and configured permission settings with respect to subject area and assigned this group to users.
such that, When User1 log in he will see his data and when User2 log in repective data
New implementaion: We have to achive this data level security through weblogic or external authenticator OID
How to acheive this?

You can choose where to get the groups from either database or any provider and map them to Application roles in EM, but you would have to set up your data restrictions thru Application roles in RPD on your Facts and Dims based on your requirement.

BIP Security - Data Level Security / Init Blocks

Hello, I am using BIP 11.1.1.5. I am aware that in OBIEE data-level security can be implemented by placing permissions on a application role. However, I am wondering if this can be accomplished in BIP if I use a BI Analysis or SQL as the datasource for my data model. I have a catalog of 100 BIP reports and was wondering if I can implemented data-level security via the RPD. I am exploring the various options of executing this type of security. I already performed some research and found Oracle's whitepaper on Row Level Security with BI Publisher.
Another Question: Does session init blocks work with BIP? I flipped the switch for BIP security model to 'Oracle BI Server' on the Admin security page. Next, I went to the RPD in online mode and created a simple query inside a init block. However, when I logged into BIP I didn't see the variable from the session init block in the Manage Sessions window.

Order Management Data Level Security

Hi All,
I have worked on OBIEE standalone and implemented data level security from custom data warehouse but never worked on BI Apps.Currently I am working Order Management and trying to implement data level security but I have no clue which OOTB init block to use for it.When i check the Order Management Group's--> permission there is no filter condition on them which i am thinking there no data level security on OM may i thinking wrong.Here is req users must able to see data by Division and Region they belong to and I am trying use OOTB security option for it OR do i need to build custom init block and related keys in all the sales order fact tables to implement it.
Any documentation or links or information will be appreciated.
This might be silly question but I would find a way better way.Please let me know if you need any information.

1. You implement data level security in the Repository file (RPD). You'll build out a subject area with the data level security and use that subject area to build out your dashboard with data level security. I have an requirement to implement data level security in Essbase. For ex: A user can only see those data which are from Asia region or an user will be able to see those data which are from America.
Asia and America are defined in my location dimension.

to make your security maintenance easier, I would suggest putting the users into groups and assigning the filters to the group. If you do it at the indivual level, the user can only have one filter assigned to them, but each group could have a different filter. So for someone who should see Americas and Asia have a group calle America and one called asia. put the user into both groups and assign the america filter to the first group and asia filter to the second group
