What is a good bitrate for my video (mp4 website embed)?

I'm trying to encode some music videos with PE to embed on my website as mp4 (streaming with jw player).
How do I figure out a bit rate for maximum quality yet no buffering delays.  I should probably assume some of my viewers will have relatively slow 1mb dsl connections.
From what I understand, these are good settings:
share>computer:  Quicktime/.mov
Video Tab
*Video Codec: H.264
*Quality: 100
*Field Type: Progressive
*Pixel Aspect Ratio: square
*Set Bitrate: checked
Audio Tab
*Audio Code: AAC
*Output Channels: Stereo
*Frequency: 44kHz
My video dimensions are either 560x315 or 600x334.
I saw in another thread that 8000kbps bitrate is good for a 720p youtube encode, though that obviously makes a huge file for website streaming.  Been trying to figure it out, but very confused. Thanks for any suggestions!

These output settings should give you excellent results on most oline video sites.

However, if you're outputting video for a web site, here's what I recommend in my book:
Share/Computer/MOV (this will produce an MP4):
Video:
Video Codec:H.264
Quality: 65%
Frame Rate: 15fps
Field Type: Progressive
Limit Data Rate to 55 kbps
Audio:
Audio Codec: AAC

  • What's a good bitrate for songs for Zen Micropho

I know a bitrate of 60 kpbs in WMA format is not good. It makes the player skip.
Which format is better? MP3 of WMA? And what type of bitrate is too high for the Zen Microphoto I want my songs to play without skipping :/
    Thanks!!

"WMA IS BETTER THAN MP3...its straight from the cd duh~"
Well like I said, it's all a matter of what you prefere. If you say that WMA is better than mp3, well, I really can't argue with you on that. However, WMA is not straight from the CD. The music on a CD is in an uncompressed format, similar to WAV, which is why CDs have such good sound quality. WMA is a compressed format, so is mp3. When you rip a CD your computer converts the music from the uncompressed format on the CD to a compressed format, either WMA or mp3. If you really want good sound quality use WAV, but you going to pay big time with extremely large file size. The reason why is because WAV is an uncompressed format.Message Edited by FuturePilot on 07-23-2006 03:45 PM

  • What's the Best App For Watching Videos on iPad Air?

Okay, so there's no Flash past, present or future for the iPad.  I read some discussions here in the archives from a year and two ago about which workaround works around best (or least badly).  Is there any update now as of December 2013 for what's the best app for viewing videos online on the iPad (Air)?  Thanks.

I downloaded the new (2013) version of Photon and it's been playing, appropriately enough, episodes of Star Trek: TAS that otherwise require Flash.   The one thing I have to remember is to click the goofy lighting bolt icon toward the top right-hand corner of the Photon screen when I return to warch an episode if I stopped in the middle.  Basically it will turn off the "Flash" emulation when the screen goes dark with inactivity, and then when you reopen Photon it crashes and you have to re-reopen Photon, click on the link to return to the website, and then click the lightning bolt icon.  I don't know why the producers made it that way, as it's pretty inconvenient, but maybe they wanted to make a browser more than a Flash emulator.  I haven't tried other Flash videos yet, but so far, so good.  :-)

thats way too vague of a question... best what?  quality? size? playback?
best quality then use high bitrate, small size use low bitrate.

  • What's a good book for getting started?

I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.

  • What is a good strategy for keeping the OEM GRID up and running?

    Hi,
What is a good strategy for keeping OEM GRID up and running? Currently, we have grid installed on one linux64bit box with 4 cpus and 8 gigs of RAM, oms 10204, repdb 10204, agent 10204. In addition to using this oem grid for notifications and performance monitring, we are also using this oem grid for scheduling over 700 jobs running over 30 targets.
What is a good strategy to have to backup the grid so that when this box goes down, we can restore and then recover the grid? Please lead to white papers or documentations. Thank you.

  • What is the best Computer for HD video editing where can I get it under $3000-5000? Thank you!

What is the best Computer for HD video editing where can I get it under $3000- $5000.00?

The wording of your question suggests you may be new to video editing, in which case the types of projects you will be doing may not be the most complex.
Please accept my apology if that assumption is incorrect.
The cheapest computer available will edit 1080p video perfectly well but if you must have the "best" you will be looking at nothing less than a MacPro.

  • Analog to Digital Converter-- What's A Good Product For My System?

What would be a good analog to digital converter for Final Cut Express HD 3.5 on a Mac OSX 10.4 system? I've used a Canopus on a MacPro with Final Cut Pro before and liked it, but wasn't sure what would be a good product for my macbook. I've looked at the Canopus advc-110 and 55 but am not clear on the difference and if it would work with what I have.

The ADVC-55 is capture only. It includes composite & s-video inputs and stereo audio inputs. Firewire output.
The ADVC-110 is bidirectional (meaning you can both capture and output through it - this is a very good way to monitor your video during production as you can see the actual quality on a monitor/TV rather than just your computer screen, which has limited capability to show you the actual video quality.) It includes composite & s-video inputs and outputs; stereo audio inputs & outputs; Firewire input & output.
The ADVC-300 is also bidirectional and includes composite, s-video and component video i/o (D1 connector) inputs & outputs; stereo audio inputs & outputs; Firewire input & output; and software that enables you to tweak its video settings. Helpful in cleaning up particularly bad analog videos.
I've used these things for years and they all work great. I do not believe there is any difference in the internal conversion hardware ... The primary differences are support for one-way vs. bidirectional conversion; input/output connectors; and the software that comes with the ADVC-300.
If you have basically clean analog video, any of these units will be fine. You can use any analog source (VHS deck, camcorder, DVD player, etc.) and would typically use iMovie or Final Cut Express to capture your video on a Mac.

  • What is a good design for remote Views?

    Hi All,
I am thinking how would I design my process for performance consideration in retrieving dynamic values of table/view data.
    The requirement is like this:
    1. We have 50 databases residing on each own server counterpart (50 servers).
    2. Each database has table Patch_LeveL (apps_name, patch_level), which contains  just one row only to reflect the latest patch level applied for the apps on this database. Note that are we constantly on applying service packs for this apps.
    3. On our central monitoring server (db). I create 50 database LINKS for each of the 50 databases.
    4. I created 50 views over these links to make  it centralized to represent  the 50 Patch_Level tables. As   patch_level_view1, 2, 3.....patch_level_view50.
    5. I then create a central view as .... as  union of the 50 individual views Actually I am just planning to do the above activity.
My question is....is this a good design for performance? Can you share be a better approach?
Is there a limitation of joining "union" of 50 views?
    Thanks a lot,

Is there a limitation of joining "union" of 50 views? What can happen is if the connection to one of these servers is interrupted, the big "union" view will not work. As said by above poster MV, with lets say an hourly refresh, helps with this situation as you have the data that was gathered last time (and most likely it is still valid).

  • What's the recommended format for shooting video thats going on websites

I'm basically looking to do video for websites. Since computer screens are displaying progressively. Is shooting (Progressive Frame Rates) always the better option for shooting video. This is if your only final destination is going to be the internet ?
Also, is streaming always the better route ? If you can afford a personal server, isnt streaming the best method of posting multiple video clips ?
    Thanks - Appreciate all replies

Just one more note to add to the good ones already here: Make sure your source material is as good as it can possibly be. Maybe I'm the weirdo, but in my experience scaling down and compressing video for Web delivery exaggerates rather than hiding shortcomings in the source material. Most of my content is delivered over the Web, but I shoot everything in high-definition with aggressively contrasty lighting and deeply crushed blacks. You might think it wouldn't matter, since it's all getting downscaled and compressed for distribution anyway, but at least to my eyes, material that's shot in high resolution (and yes, at 23.976) with a lot of in-camera contrast compresses better. You end up with fewer subtle areas of mostly-the-same luminance, like in the backgrounds, and that's where Internet compression really falls apart. By keeping everything in sharp contrast, and especially by underlighting your backgrounds and really crushing your blacks, I feel you give the encoder a little advantage and let it produce a better result.
But that might just be me.
