What is SQL Query

Dear all,
what is meant by SQL Query?
I have a report which is directly in production and not in development.its a user created program.
some one said that it is SQL query.
What is meant by it ?
Is there any name for that SQL query?
If yes,how can I find it?

Hi,
SQL Query means select statement u r getting the data from the database table.
Standard SQL
SQL (Structured Query Language) is a largely standardized language for accessing relational databases.  It can be divided into three areas:
·         Data Manipulation Language (DML)
Statements for reading and changing data in database tables.
·         Data Definition Language (DDL)
Statements for creating and administering database tables.
·         Data Control Language (DCL)
Statements for authorization and consistency checks.
Each database has a programming interface that allows you to access the database tables using SQL statements.  The SQL statements in these programming interfaces are not fully standardized. To access a specific database system, you must refer to the documentation of that system for a list of the SQL statements available and their correct syntax.
The Database Interface
To make the R/3 System independent of the database system with which you use it despite the differences in the SQL syntax between various databases, each work process on an application server has a database interface. The R/3 System communicates with the database by means of this interface.  The database interface converts all of the database requests from the R/3 System into the correct Standard SQL statements for the database system. To do this, it uses a database-specific component that shields the differences between database systems from the rest of the database interface.  You choose the appropriate layer when you install the R/3 System.
There are two ways of accessing the database from a program - with Open SQL or Native SQL.
Open SQL
Open SQL statements are a subset of Standard SQL that is fully integrated in ABAP. They allow you to access data irrespective of the database system that the R/3 installation is using. Open SQL consists of the Data Manipulation Language (DML) part of Standard SQL; in other words, it allows you to read (SELECT) and change (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE) data.
Open SQL also goes beyond Standard SQL to provide statements that, in conjunction with other ABAP constructions, can simplify or speed up database access. It also allows you to buffer certain tables on the application server, saving excessive database access. In this case, the database interface is responsible for comparing the buffer with the database. Buffers are partly stored in the working memory of the current work process, and partly in the shared memory for all work processes on an application server. Where an R/3 System is distributed across more than one application server, the data in the various buffers is synchronized at set intervals by the buffer management. When buffering the database, you must remember that data in the buffer is not always up to date. For this reason, you should only use the buffer for data which does not often change. You specify whether a table can be buffered in its definition in the ABAP Dictionary.
Native SQL
Native SQL is only loosely integrated into ABAP, and allows access to all of the functions contained in the programming interface of the respective database system. Unlike Open SQL statements, Native SQL statements are not checked and converted, but instead are sent directly to the database system. When you use Native SQL, the function of the database-dependent layer is minimal. Programs that use Native SQL are specific to the database system for which they were written. When writing R/3 applications, you should avoid using Native SQL wherever possible. It is used, however, in some parts of the R/3 Basis System - for example, for creating or changing table definitions in the ABAP Dictionary.
The ABAP Dictionary
The ABAP Dictionary, part of the ABAP Workbench, allows you to create and administer database tables.  Open SQL contains no statements from the DDL part of Standard SQL. Normal application programs should not create or change their own database tables.
The ABAP Dictionary uses the DDL part of Open SQL to create and change database tables. It also administers the ABAP Dictionary in the database.  The ABAP Dictionary contains metadescriptions of all database tables in the R/3 System. Only database tables that you create using the ABAP Dictionary appear in the Dictionary. Open SQL statements can only access tables that exist in the ABAP Dictionary.
Authorization and Consistency Checks
The DCL part of Standard SQL is not used in R/3 programs. The work processes within the R/3 System are logged onto the database system as users with full rights.  The authorizations of programs or users to read or change database tables is administered within the R/3 System using the R/3 authorization concept.  Equally, transactions must ensure their own data consistency using the R/3 locking concept.  For more information, refer to Authorization Concept and Programming Database Updates.
Plzz reward points if it helps.

  • What SQL query I need for this?

I need to execute a SQL query but I don't know how.
To illustrate it, please take a look at some example data:
        ARTICLEID SOLDON
        1         2005-12-31
        1         2005-11-31
        1         2005-10-31
        1         2005-09-31
        1         2005-08-31
        1         2005-07-31
        1         2005-06-31
        1         2005-05-31
        1         2005-04-31
        1         2005-03-31
        1         2005-02-31
        1         2005-01-31
        1         2004-12-31
        1         2004-11-31
        2         2005-12-31
        2         2005-11-31
        2         2005-10-31
2         2005-09-31 This is a piece of the sales data for the articles (sales history).
Lets assume that today is the date 2005-12-31.
    Two requirements for the query:
    1. Get the sales data for the last 12 months.
    2. Get only the sales data for articles where there is sales data since at least 6 months.
The result in my example should look like this:
        ARTICLEID SOLDON
        1         2005-12-31
        1         2005-11-31
        1         2005-10-31
        1         2005-09-31
        1         2005-08-31
        1         2005-07-31
        1         2005-06-31
        1         2005-05-31
        1         2005-04-31
        1         2005-03-31
        1         2005-02-31
1         2005-01-31 What is the SQL which I need to accomplish this query?

To get all the information from the last 12 months
you will have to use date manipulation.
    SELECT add_months(sysdate, -12) from
dual; This gives you the date 12 months ago.
So you will have to select your date between then and
the current date.If I do this I will get this data:
        ARTICLEID SOLDON
        1         2005-12-31
        1         2005-11-31
        1         2005-10-31
        1         2005-09-31
        1         2005-08-31
        1         2005-07-31
        1         2005-06-31
        1         2005-05-31
        1         2005-04-31
        1         2005-03-31
        1         2005-02-31
        1         2005-01-31
        2         2005-12-31
        2         2005-11-31
        2         2005-10-31
        2         2005-09-31 But I want this data:
        ARTICLEID SOLDON
        1         2005-12-31
        1         2005-11-31
        1         2005-10-31
        1         2005-09-31
        1         2005-08-31
        1         2005-07-31
        1         2005-06-31
        1         2005-05-31
        1         2005-04-31
        1         2005-03-31
        1         2005-02-31
1         2005-01-31 I am no native English speaker. What didn't you understand in the two requirements?
Here are my two requirements for the query:
    1. Get the sales data for the last 12 months.
    2. But get ONLY the sales data for articles where there is sales data since AT LEAST 6 months.
The result can contain as many IDs as you want if the two requirements are met. Its not a trivial SQL statement for me. Please remember that the above data are only for illustration. They are just an example.
There should be a SQL statement for this.
Please tell me if you don't understand my problem. I will try to explain it in a better way if I can.

  • What is the best way to Optimize a SQL query : call a function or do a join?

Hi, I want to know what is the best way to optimize a SQL query, call a function inside the SELECT statement or do a simple join?

    Hi,
If you're even considering a join, then it will probably be faster.  As Justin said, it depends on lots of factors.
A user-defined function is only necessary when you can't figure out how to do something in pure SQL, using joins and built-in functions.
You might choose to have a user-defined function even though you could get the same result with a join.  That is, you realize that the function is slow, but you believe that the convenience of using a function is more important than better performance in that particular case.

  • What can be the SQL Query for this requirement ?

    Hi,
I have a table with fields like this:
    ID DESC PARENT
    01 ABC 02
    02 ABC1 01
    03 ABC2 01
    04 ABC4 02
In the above table PARENT column refers to ID column , but actually in SQL query i want to have ID, DESC , and PARENTDESC (i.e., desc value of the corresponding ID)
Actual output that i need is
select ID , DESC , ?? from table where ID=someValue . Now if i provide ID=01 then output should be like this:
    ID DESC PARDESC
    01 ABC ABC1
Can anyone help what can be the required sql query ?
Edited by: bootstrap on Apr 29, 2011 6:15 AM

    SELECT T1.ID, T1.DESC, T2.DESC
    FROM TABLEA T1, TABLEA T2
    WHERE T1.ID='01'
    AND T2.ID = T1.PARENT;

Rafi is correct. Since po_number is the filter column, the only chance you have for using an index to access the table is on that column. However, if there are few (or none) rows with null po_number, you will always have FTS. Does the table have a PK ( which probably consists of at least po_number, line_number )? If that is the case po_number could never be null and in which case you are dumping the whole table and no indexing scheme is going to improve the queri's performance. You might, repeat might, see performance improvement if you cleanse the data in the table ( to eliminate the need for UPPER(LTRIM)RTRIM())) ) before querying it so the the data does not have to be massaged before returning it.

  • What Option Allows Permanent Change of Query in the Show SQL Query Window?

I am trying to create a report in Crystal Reports v8.5 (or v10).  I would like to create the report by simply cutting and pasting an SQL query from SQL Designer into the appropriate place in Crystal Reports.  I can paste the query into the "Show SQL Query" window, but it reverts back to something else.  What Option do I change to allow me to do that, i.e, change the query in the "Show SQL Query" window?

    Hi Alan,
In CR10 there is no option to past SQL qurety in Show Sql command option.  There is another option provided 'Add Commad' to execute customized SQL queries.  After connecting to your datasource before selecting tables you can choose Add Command option and past your SQL queries.
Also you can modify the queries which you have pasted in add command.
    Thanks,
    Sastry

  • SQL Query to Find out User has what all resources provisioned !

    Hi Guys ,
Does any one have a SQL query to find out what resources are provisioned to a particular user ?
    Thanks
    Suren

    Hi,
    Hope this will help you.
SELECT distinct usr_login as "IdM User ID",
    usr_employeeID as "Employee ID",
    usr.USR_FIRST_NAME as "First Name",
    usr.USR_LAST_NAME as "Last Name",
    usr_status
    as "User Status",
    USR_EMP_TYPE as "Employee Type",
    obj.obj_name as "Application Resource",
    ost_status as "Application Resource Status",
    FROM ost,oiu,obj,usr,obi
    WHERE oiu.ost_key = ost.ost_key AND obj.obj_key = obi.obj_key AND oiu.usr_key = usr.usr_key
    AND ost_status in ('Provisioned','Revoked','Disabled', 'Provisioning')
    AND oiu.obi_key=obi.obi_key
    AND usr_EmployeeID like '11111'
This query will provide all the resources to which the user is linked with and the resource status is in 'Provisioned','Revoked','Disabled', 'Provisioning' status for a particular employeed ID, I am not completely sure whether I have given the Employee ID column from USR table as correct or not. Verify once and query the DB

    thanks sir,

&c_source_from and &c_from_cat formula column and there are defined at report level only ......
    pl/sql code &c_source_from is
    function C_source_fromFormula return VARCHAR2 is

  • SQL query for empty string

I am trying to execute the following SQl query, SELECT * FROM Failure WHERE ID = '123' AND RepairAction = ' ';, using the DB Tools Execute Query.vi. This query never finds the record in my database. My database contains a record where the ID filed contains the value of '123' and the RepairAction field is an empty string. If I remove the 'AND RepairAction ' ';' text from my query statement, the record is found. I believe my problem is that I am not using the correct syntax to describe and empty string. I have tried the following: '', ' ', "", " ", and NULL as empty string arguments, and none of these work.
I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what the correct syntax is for an empty string or if there is another approach I need to take.
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Jim
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
While creating your table "Failure", was the column "ID" delclared as intiger or varchar? If it is intiger and you use '123' , it wont return the results. You will have to try without the inverted comas ' '.

This query will never work. I marked only couple of errors you have there. Actually,
I meant "formating" errors rather than "syntactical" errors. You are missing spaces
all over the place. This is why I suggested to use a CLOB column in a test table
to return the query for debugging purposes - this is how I do it at least, when I need
to escape and concatenate a lot of code.
If you are referencing item values from a user session in a function or a procedure,
then you need to use the v('ITEM') syntax instead of :ITEM syntax. However, if the
output of this procedure will be used as a function returning SQL query, you will
    be fine with :ITEM.

  • How can I show all the results returned by a sql query?

    Hi guys,
    I need your help.
Let's say I have one table: TableA. Fields of TableA are aleg, anon, apes. The following sentence can return, in general, several rows: select anon from TableA where aleg = somevalue. I'd like to show the result of column anon but no luck. If I try to show the results in a TextArea and the origin is an sql query only shows the first row value. I tried Show as: show as text (based in PLSQL) and coding an anonymous plsql block as
    DECLARE
    v_anon TableA.anon%TYPE;
    CURSOR v_cur IS
         select anon from TableA where aleg = somevalue;
    BEGIN
    OPEN v_cur;
    LOOP
    FETCH v_cur INTO v_anon;
    EXIT WHEN v_cur%NOTFOUND;
    :FIELD_IN_FORM := v_anon;
    END LOOP;
    CLOSE v_cur;
    END;
but in this case it's not shown any result.
So the first question is what kind of field should I use to show the result. And the second one is what can I do to being able to show all the results returned by the query (provided that is more than one single row).
    regards

    Hi Denes,
Just starting with apex. I think I know how to show the results in a report region. I've simplified the posted question.
A more detailed question would be: Suppose you have a region where you have put several text areas to accommodate the result of a multi-column query (lets say for TableA) that only returns one row, each column value returned put in a different text area. Also you want to show the values of other fields in TableB that depends on some value just retrieved from TableA and that you want all values retrieved (from TableA and the linked TableB) to be show in the same region. Is that possible? If yes, how?
    Thank you in advance

    HI,
Please use the option of Custom Sql and paste it there.
it does not matter what operation are you using but the xsd will form accordingly.
If you need to do only via Select operation in the wizard, than select the tables and add pararmeters in the next screen and try to give the logic there.
I feel the best thing to do would be with the Custom Sql query.
And whatever variables you need to pass dyanamically.
Just put an # symbol before to the column name .
    The variable will be formed.
    Thanks,
    Tirumala Dixit.
