What is the "other" that's taking up space and how to compress it...

It seems that since uploading to itunes 8.0, i've noticed that i have 13.60 GB of "other" showing up on my iPod--not giving me much free space.
I recently used my iPod to transfer my library--is this the issue? How do free up that space--on my iPod?
Thanks!

*i've noticed that i have 13.60 GB of "other" showing up on my iPod-*
Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware etc. or (and this doesn't apply to the iPod Touch or iPhone which don't have the option to enabled for disk use), files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes
*I recently used my iPod to transfer my library--is this the issue? How do free up that space--on my iPod?*
Open your iPod in Windows Explorer and make sure you deleted all of the files you were transferring.

  • I understand that many versions of any pictures are still on my computer (Masters???).  If I have a final I like, how do I delete all the others that are taking up space?

I understand that many versions of any pictures are still on my computer (Masters???).  If I have a final I like, how do I delete all the others that are taking up space?  I have already put the originals into albums, edited them, and renamed them.  Can I/should I delete all other versions located in Masters, I think?  If I want to keep events, but want them to include the newly edited albums, can I delete the specific event and somehow bring the photos used in the album into a new event.  Understand iPhoto just keeps space or manages photos, so how can I have events that include the edited pix and clean up disk space.  Thanks.
    iPhoto 11 v9.4.2
using Lion, updated, on iMac Pro.

It's very simple. If you want to use iPhoto, just let it manage things as it does. Other than that: Export from iPhoto and delete the image from iPhoto. That will remove the master and all versions.
If space is an issue... use an external disk.
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

  • HT1689 what is the "other" storage on my iphone 4 and how to i delete it?

Again what is the "other" storage on my iphone 4 and how to i delete it?

There will always be some other - favorites, history, voicemail and other items.
Much more than a GB or so indicates corrupt files.  A restore should resolve.

  • Memory issues...what is the "Other" that is taking up so much space?

I have a 4 Gig IPhone...and have 303mb of music, 1.3 gigs of video, 25.2 mb of photos, and then there is the 1.61 GB of "Other" ???...what is taking up all this space ? any idea...or anyone else notice that goin on with there Iphone ???...Large amounts of space being taken up by "Other" ???
    IMac G5, 17 Inch, rev B & MacBook 2GHz, 2 gb, white, Iphone 4GB   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

I had the exact same issue. I scoured the forums and the manuals. I had 404 meg of other. After i removed all my mp3's it went to 420. Wierd
    So i did a restore. Then I had 14.4.
I opened Google maps and it went to 15.5.
Yesterday I did some mapping with google as well. again the size went up.
My theory is that Google maps caches the maps you use.
However there is no way to clear the google cache.
I also cleared safari cache and that had no affect.
Since then I have been monitoring the other usage. It is still on a steady upward pace. I hope I dont have to reload to reclaim space again.
Maybe this is something they will fix.

  • Why is my internal memory so full? How can I find out what is the "other" that is taking up so much space?

I'm not very tech-savvy. My iPhone is backed up on my computer and all my photos are in my computer. I'm going to send it away to have the screen fixed and the people from AppleCare recommended to back it up just in case. So, I am going to backup my computer for the first time since I bought it in mid 2011. I go see how much space I need and I see that I only have 15 GB of memory space left and this huge space being used up by "Other". I don't know if its because I updated it to Mavericks. How can I see what that is? Also, I've never downloaded movies so I don't know why that is also there. Please help ASAP!
    I added a photo.

"Other" is everything that isn't in one of the other categories. For instance, it includes all your user documents that are not movie, audio, or photo files.
Regardless of that, you need to use an external drive at least large enough to backup your entire user folder (the one with a House icon). Better is to get one at least as large as your built-in drive & use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to clone the whole built-in drive to it.

  • HT5654 What is the "other" section in my cellular usage and how do I get rid of it? It is taking almost 75% of my usage space.

It is taking almost 75% of my usage space and I have no idea what it entails and how to get rid of it. I deleted almost all of my pictures and apps, emails, and emptied my safari cache and browsing history.

"Other" is typically less than a GB.
More generally indicates a corrupt file(s).
    A restore should resolve.

  • What is the "Other" folder on my mac? and how do i reduce its size?

i have an "other" folder on my macbook pro which is 54gb in size? and i have no idea what is in this file or how to delete it? Can anyone help?
i do not understand why it is so big, it has grown by 3 gb today alone.  I also have smaller "other" folders on my ipad and iphone but they are only 1gb.
Does anyone know what these folders actually are?? and more importantly how to delete them?

  • I have an iPhone 4 8gb and I have about 6gb other that is taking up space but I dont know what it is. What do I do?

I only have 300 pictures and 2 videos, only 50 songs, I always clear my data and cookies, and history on safari, and I always delete my texting and imessaging conversations, and I clear my calling history. I also redownloaded all my apps BUT I still have 6GB "other" that is taking up space and I don't know what it is and what to do to get more memory space since I only have an 8GB phone. Also I updated my phone to, I think verison iOS 6.0.1, about 4 or 5 months ago, and I think that's when I started getting so much of my memory taking up by "other". There is another software update iOS 6.1.3 but if I were to update would that take even more room? Or is that the solution? Because I can't really do much on ly phone because I don't have enough memory space. Please help me get more memory space on my phone. And hopefully someone knows what went wrong, what's taking up 6GB of memory space, and how to fix it. Help me! Thnx

My welcome screen used to have just my name and an icon.  Now it has my name on one side and guest user on the other. where did it come from and how do I get rid of it?

Either you enabled the guest user, or you enabled Find My Mac, which requires there to be an active guest account for a thief to log into, so that they'll connect to the internet and allow you to locate it.

  • What is the "other" component of my storage breakdown and is there a safe way to reduce it?

I have a MBP retina (mid 2012) running OSX Yosemite 10.10.3 with 250Gb of flash storage. I am constantly battling with limited space on my drive. Of the 250Gb, 103Gb is classified as "other". What is it and am I able to reduce some of it safely? I have a 1Tb external drive that has plenty of space if I am able to transfer any of that onto it.
    Any help is much appreciated!!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
    In Photos:
File ▹ Show Recently Deleted ▹ Delete All
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install the app in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    For ODS:
    security execute-with-privileges /A*/OmniDiskSweeper.app/*/M*/* 2>&-
    For GP:
    security execute-with-privileges /A*/GrandPerspective.app/*/M*/* 2>&-
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password.
The application window will open behind other open windows. When you scan a volume, the window will eventually show all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Test connected to Internet.   Test Safari and several other apps for crashes.
If it passes this test, it must now have find my iPhone turned off by the seller.   They must also remove the device from their iCloud account.
*****Please observe this.   If the seller can't turn off find my iPhone, then it is not his iPad to sell.   It will lock when you try to activate and will be worthless.****
If this is the owner of the iPad he can also remotely erase the iPad with iCloud.
