What is the remedy for a slow running iMac?

What is the remedy for a very slow running iMac?

Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.

I can't imagine any worse workflow than converting to JPEG to edit text, then back to PDF. Text in a PDF is a vector thing, smooth at all resolutions. And JPEG is made for photos. EVERY conversion to JPEG and back loses quality but how much loss there is will vary.

  • What are the rules for keeping things running smoothly

As my iMac is now a month old and has been burdened with a number of trials, shareware demo, open source, video tutorials and general clutter; what are the basic rules for keeping things running smoothly? My 'log in' is certainly a lot slower although I don't have any apps loading and finder has become much slower with less spring in it's tail. Are there any caches etc that need dealing with? I'm afraid to say I was a bit of a pro at hammering my windows setups till they came to a stand still and I can't bare to see the Mac going the same way. Have I got to be ruthless and limit the number of apps I have installed? The quality of what is available just on apple.com makes it hard for a software addict to stop downloading Any help or just a reality check would be much appreciated....rob

A good disk utility to empty caches: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
Use Onyx once a week, run the Maintenance and Cleaning scripts and that will help speed your Mac up pronto.
Run Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) once a week and Repair Disk Permissions:
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.
*Tip... very important: Run Disk Utility BEFORE and AFTER all software updates. That will save you headaches down the road.
You do not need to limit the number of apps installed but one thing to bear in mind. A Mac needs a minimum of 10% available disk space just to boot and it's all too easy fill up a drive and before you know it, you can't open apps, or they open and freeze up, or you can't install software. A good way to keep an eye on available space: Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the black arrow next to: General so it faces down. You will see: Capacity and Available ... Best best is to always have 15% free drive space.
Back up your important data every day. If you have a system failure and need to either do an Archive and Install or completely wipe the drive and reinstall your system software, you'll be glad you did.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software.

I hope I didn't inundate you with too much too soon, but just do maintenance, keep your Desktop clutter free, and back up your files daily. Once you get into the habit of doing this, it only takes a few minutes a day.

  • What ARE the options for these fan-disabled iMacs?

I have started this as a new topic so as not to upset the members contributing to the below subject re. fast running fans :-
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2372777&tstart=0
The aim is to gain some practical advice for myself and others sharing the same problem.
My machine is a 4 yr old 6,1 iMac which 6 months ago started with this 'fans running too fast problem'. Initially intermittent, I am now in a position where my CPU and OD fans run at 4000-6000 rpm constantly when the machine is on. Progressing further the fans are now actually staying on for a full 5 minutes after I have properly put the machine to sleep. I have tried all the practical advice given in the above topic/thread to no avail.
Apple at the Trafford Centre were very helpful indeed and ran the diagnostics and hoovering for me last month and formally stated that it was due to CPU temp sensor failure - I was quoted £411 all in for a repair (logic board replacement required) but I came home with it to think. They tended to agree that it might be unwise to spend this when the machine is 4 yr old and may fail again for other reasons.
Working with this constant hum is driving me insane, I am just one of those who cannot stand it and soon therapy costs will kick in! Not to mention the wasted wattage. My idea is to buy a Mac Mini and tie it to an HP display for around £620 but does my iMac just go in the bin when it is fully functional otherwise?? Tried ear plugs, but my wife started slapping me to get my attention.
I could not bear it going for £70 on eBay, but I suppose I could harvest the HDD drive and RAM. Trading in seems to be a non-starter really. Joking apart, there must be people who are 'hard of hearing' who could benefit from this ever growing cohort of otherwise perfect machines?
My confidence in Apple has been reduced, especially when you others are getting the same problem out of the box! My only criticism was that the 'genius' I saw had not heard of the issue - despite the above thread. Finally there is the embarrassment when visiting friends ask what is drowning out the noise from my Thomson Freeview box and fish tank pumps!
Can't help thinking that beautiful 'exterior design' has impeded simple repair of a minor component.
Helpful, non technical suggestions gratefully received.

Distasteful as it is, it is generally not practical to repair motherboard level problems in contemporary consumer class electronics like iMacs. This is not so much because other things might fail but because motherboard repairs are themselves risky even for skilled technicians with all the specialized tools required.
Motherboards in these things are complex multilayer sandwiches of printed circuit traces with plated through holes making connections among them, tiny surface-mounted components, & other features that are well suited to economical highly automated mass fabrication but make most repairs a difficult & delicate operation. This is especially true for high speed electronics: not only must great care be taken to apply exactly the right amount of heat to remove & replace defective components without damaging them, adjacent components, or the motherboard circuitry itself; but also just not duplicating the shape of the newly soldered connection closely enough to the original can cause mis-operation because the affected circuits no longer meet the minimum bandwidth specs necessary to always process high speed signals correctly. (See the section in the Wikipedia reference titled "Reworking defective SMD components" for more about this.)
Of course, the motherboards could be designed with more easily replaced sub-assemblies like daughterboards & socketed components, but this both increases costs & significantly reduces achievable performance unless even more costly techniques are used in the initial design. This in turn increases bulk, requires more complex & expensive cooling systems, demands larger power supplies, & so on.
Basically, to do this right, you end up with something a lot more like a Mac Pro than an iMac, with a price tag to match.
In terms of your options, you can try to find a tech willing to work on the motherboard, but keep in mind all of the above about this kind of repair. You might be lucky. It may even turn out that the bad sensor is not on the motherboard or in the CPU itself, making the repair relatively simple & risk free.

  • What are the settings for iPhone, iPad and iMac to sync ical and contacts?

How can I get all three items to sync? What are the settings on the iMac with Lion on board? I put all my stuff on iphone but iMac & iPad do not have the items synced even though I have everything on icloud?

They're asking a question about carrier settings for their iPhone. I think that has everything to do with Apple.
Maybe they did already ask Straight Talk. I've called Straight Talk before... they're not too helpful.
You know, this forum would be much friendlier if people in this forum would quit squabbling, & posting comedic replies, not too mention name calling (like I did), when people are just needing some help.
It's also frustrating that people stick up for the guy who doesn't help, but rather takes the time to post some smart alec reply. Granted, I shouldn't have name-called... some people just frustrate me when they act like that.
Admittedly, there ARE some grey areas when it comes to carrier questions... but let the moderators do their job when someone is asking innappropriate stuff. And if the mods aren't chiming in, then that's a good indication that what the thread is about IS in fact Apple related.

  • What is the reason for a slow Firefox on a new powerful laptop? (with no other programs running and with no infection of viruses or adwares)

With about 1500 bookmarks and just 4 active Firefox extensions on my new laptop (Dell XPS L502, Core i7, 6GB of RAM, Win7 64-bit Ultimate) my Firefox boots up and works real slow. by slow I mean it boots up in 15 seconds; and with 3 tabs open when I switch tabs, it takes 5 seconds to switch to the new tab some of the times!). Internet Explorer and Chrome work much faster and I think this is not normal for Firefox. what can be the problem?
Can this be because of my VGA card? my system has 2 VGA's; the 2GB GT540M Nvidia graphic card which is not active by default for Firefox and an Intel on-board VGA which is working by default for normal usages like browsing.
I do not think this is a virus or anything, I have Updated malware and virus protection; and my RAM and CPU are not more than 25% loaded when running Firefox.

  • After upgrading to IOS7 showing no sim what is the remedy?

What is the remedy for iPad showing no sim after I upgraded to IOS 7

apple care walked me through this.
remove SIM card-with home button down, tray is on left side of ipad-can use small paperclip for eject button in hole next to card tray
    settings/general/reset/reset network settings
    reinstall SIM card
so much easier if apple care would post things like this themselves

  • What is the cause for the mac to become slow

what is the cause for the mac to become slow?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with a visit to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • What are the announcements for renting VPS?

What are the announcements for renting VPS? For details, understand VPS and make the choice of rental; for Taiwan VPS and Hong Kong VPS, without records, unlimited contents, wider range, and more efficient experience. Your server will show its excellence with the advantages.
Most station agents become less inclined to virtual hosting, for national space, domain name records are needed, which waste the time; for overseas hosting such as Korea hosting, US hosting, no records, but slower speed than national space; therefore, more and more station agents prefer servers, but because the price of servers are too high, they turn their focus on VPS.
    The following are the announcements:
    1.Open remote desktop lander:
    Start-run-mstsc or start-procedure-nearby-remote desktop connect
    2.Several conditions for account halt:
First, client side login cause account halt
Second, certain account quits the remote control in midway when it runs routine
Third, certain routine is restricted by synchronous operation of system administrator.
    3. Not install the third party firewall
If you need firewall, please use windows firewall, the third party firewall in VPS will cause system collapse and data loss, the system automatically obtains the newest windows patches and install itself, which do not require human operation. Installing system patches in VPS sometimes will heavily lead to VPS collapse and data loss.
Do not modify remote desktop port.
Because of the specialty of VPS system, default remote desktop port is 3389, do not modify randomly, or the remote connection will be out of work.
    4. Except some special conditions that user registration is needed for certain procedure, when the remote connection has been close down, do not forget logout user to save memory resource, and prevent the loading connection next time, if it happens, reboot VPS.
    5. VPS has been set with relative security when it was paid, with high security. It suggests that do not open firewall randomly, if you open it by your own, the following ports should be opened: 21(FTP), 3389(remote connection), 80(website http), 3306(MySQL), 1433(SQL Server). Timely check whether there is suspicious account or system log, download 360 safety guard to avoid these files and process.
    6. Try not to modify registry hand-actuated, ensure the reboot of VPS. Modify remote ports please add the modified port in firewall first, and then reboot.
7.Modify IIS installation files, backup these files, and then modify them with the software that can keep the file layout, prevent these files from destroying IIS.
8.Website service of VPS and FTP service of IIS are default to open hand-actuated, set Web Publishing Service as automatically if you are station agent. If you often use FTP service of IIS, please set FTP Publishing Service as automatically, i.e. reboot it automatically. If you use serv-u, tick all the system service terms. In the terms of security and resource consumption , it suggests that those users who seldom use FTP do not set it as automatically.

    Hi there
"So for ALL the apps, the annual monthly fee is £46.88, but you can rent occasionally for £70.32 pm.... ?" Correct
£17.58 single app plan requires an annual commit - it's £27.34 for the month-to-month plan without annual commit.
    Thanks

  • What's the voltage input needed to run and charge the iPad 4?

What's the voltage input needed to run and charge the iPad 4?

As long as the charger is rated for at least 10 watts or 2 amps it well charge the iPad just fine. A higher rated charger such as the 12 watt 2.4 amp charger will also charge the iPad, possibly a little faster, but it will not damage it. Chargers rated at 5 watts or 1 amp may charge an iPad very slowly if not at all.
Just be aware some cheaper dual port USB chargers share the 2 amps. It will charge an iPad in one port but adding another will reduce the current to both ports to 1 amp. An iPhone may charge fine but the power would be reduced to the lower level and slow an iPad charging on the other port. The one you link to will work fine although it looks as though one port is 5 watt/1 amp and the other is 10 watt/2 amp. There are many adapter's available that will supply 10 or 12 watts to both ports to future proof the charger giving you the capability to charge 2 iPads or other more demanding smart phones with larger batteries. I like Scosche reVolt chargers, they cost a little more but they are a quality product. If you want the best option go with a 12 watt charger which can speed up charging on many products a little more than a 10 watt can.

    Hi Guys,
What is the query for Accounts Payable Trial Balance (APXTRBAL) in 11.5.10?
I have to write an AP Invoice Aging Report in Discoverer to show all unpaid invoices that have been transferred into GL... Business wants it to match one-to-one with the AP Trial Balance standard report...
Business wants to run the report for any date in a past...
    The report has two parameters:
As Of Date - the same as As of Date for the AP Trial Report
Trial Balance Run Date - the date when Trial Balance was run...
    Conditions are:
    TRUNC(Invoice Date) <=TRUNC(NVL(TO_DATE(:As Of Date),SYSDATE))
    TRUNC(NVL(Payment Date,'01-JAN-5000')) > TRUNC(NVL(TO_DATE(:As Of Date),SYSDATE))
    TRUNC(Invoice Creation Date) <= TRUNC(NVL(TO_DATE(:Trial Balance Run Date),SYSDATE))
    Distr Accounting Date <= TRUNC(NVL(TO_DATE(:As Of Date),SYSDATE))
    NVL(Distr Creation Date,Invoice Creation Date) <= TRUNC(NVL(TO_DATE(:Trial Balance Run Date),SYSDATE))
