What's new in the iPod classic firmware v1.3?

I was just wondering because I hadn't noticed anything new.

I was wondering the same thing. I can't seem to find anything explaining what the firmware update is supposed to accomplish.
Also, is their a good reason why the 5th Gen Video iPod can't download rented movies? I know the new Classic can... this makes no sense.

The operating system and space reserved for the iPod to carry out its tasks, such as remembering what you have played and how many times you've played it (this information is Synced back to your iTunes Library at each Sync.) There is also a slight discrepancy in the way that storage size is calculated, which accounts for some of that 12GB.

    You cannot.
You still have 148GB for storing your music, vidoes and Podcasts. That's quite a lot.
My music library is currently 115.78GB and is a mixture of songs at various Bit Rates. (The higher the Bit Rate, usually, the better the quality.) It has more than 17,000 songs and will play (non-stop) for 58 days.
If your Library becomes (or already is) larger than this, it is possible to set iTunes to automatically manage the content, by removing (for example) recently played songs (except any specific ones you always want on your iPod) and then to put back onto the iPod songs that haven't been played for a while.
If you would like any detail on how this is done, let us know.
In the meantime, enjoy your iPod.
Create your Library of music and - my advice is - to use Sync to add everything to your iPod. In other words, do not use Manually Manage. In the long run, Sync is easier. You can still fully control what is on the iPod using Sync. Again, if you need help, this is the place to ask. Generally speaking, the more points a user has, the more people feel that have been helped by that user.

This thread - with a quote from an LR4 Beta thread - says that all 6 central Basic controls in PV2012 (Exposure thru Blacks) are now image-adaptive, as were Recovery, Fill Light, and Clarity in previous versions:

Whether they are suitable for creating a Timelapse sequence without significant flicker is entirely subjective and up to you - and of course, dependant on your specific images & how they change over time.  Sorry, not much advice beyond try PV2012, and revert back to PV2010 if you get too much flicker.

  • Everything about the IPOD Classic 160 GB Battery

    Dear All,
Just want to know how the battery is connected and placed inside the ipod classic 160GB model, can it be replaced by a user without using a soldering iron.Is it attached with a adhesive ?
    Kindly discuss.
    Thanks

With the new ipods, the issue isn't the battery connection so much as it is the shell itself. It is now extremely difficult to open the ipod, as they have metal catches around the inside of the case. From what I have read, the battery and HD are still user changable, IF you can get in without damaging the outer shell, which is much easier to do with the new design. This is also why most of the online battery replacement companies are still not showing as being able to change out the HD/battery on the classics.

  • Is the Ipod classic gonna be discontinued?  I love it, I have two of the 160gb ones.

Is there a danger of the Ipod classic being discontinued?  I love it, and have two of them since i have such a big CD collection  I don't know what I would use if that went away.

We should not speculate about the future of an Apple product here.  A point to consider is why we need to carry around our entire music collection.
My music library is "only" about 45GB at this point.  I don't own any iPod that can hold it all, but that's not a problem for me, because 45GB is almost 20 days of continuous music.  I have no need to have all of THAT with me on an iPod.  A 160GB iPod would hold more than TWO MONTHS of continuous music.
I like to listen to my music in shuffle mode, which lets me hear songs I have not (intentionally) listened to in a long time, songs I forgot I had.  Even my 1GB iPod shuffle is sufficient to listen to my entire collection in shuffle mode.  I use the Autofill feature to randomly fill my shuffle from my complete music library, every time I connect it to my Mac to charge.  When I play that music, I am essentially shuffling a random selection of songs from my complete library.  So a 1GB shuffle lets me listen to my complete 45GB library in shuffle mode, over time.
On my 8GB iPod nano that I use for running, I have a "favorites" playlist that I sync from my iTunes library.  I also have Genius playlists that I have iTunes create for me, and I sync those to the nano.  This keeps the songs on my nano focused on songs that I like to hear, not random songs (so it's the opposite of how I use my shuffle).
I prefer to use the newer (smaller, lighter, and more durable) designs, and load them with songs smartly, not completely.

  • Can I Jog with the iPod Classic

So, i jog on a regular basis. I had the second generation iPod since its release. I recently upgraded to the 160 gb iPod Classic. I know that the iPod Classic is the only iPod with a moving HDD instead of flash memory. I have heard that it would ruin the iPod if i jogged with it, but all of my music and playlists are on it. So my question is, is it harmful the the iPod the jog with it for about two miles, not extended periods of time, just about 20 minutes. Also, does Apple basic insurance cover the HDD breaking?
    Thanks

I take mine downhill skiiing; no problems so far.
(And yes, I've eaten snow while the ipod was running.)
Your milage may vary and all the standard disclaimers.
That said, it is a standard hard drive in there, so I would think it is subject to "normal" shock rules.
What I don't know is if there is something like an accelerometer (a feature in some laptops), which would lock the heads/park the drive if a sudden change was detected.

  • Is it necessary to buy a case for the iPod Classic?

    Ok...
I just got an iPod Classic 160gb. I have had numerous iPods in the past, and i have not used a case on any of them.
Is the iPod Classic different, does it need a protective case to help protect the hdd.
The back scratches easily, i know.
    Can anyone recommend a case?

Nothing has to have a case, but a case is always something that provides more safety. Remember that a case won't always save the iPod and doesn't promise it to always work. I always use a case because the back does scratch so easily and I like to keep my products looking new.
I bought an 80GB classic and put it in a case immediately. Two years later and it still looks amazing when i take it out of the case.
I don't have a case recommendation, but try to look for something that won't inhibit the iPod from pluggin into a docking station because the case wrapping around the bottom. I had a case that did that and it was a hassle to take the case off just to dock it at a friend's house so that we could all listen to some fun tunes.

  • How to play only one episode of a podcast on the iPod Classic 120GB?

With my previous iPod-- the 60GB iPod Photo-- I could play only one episode of a podcast. I would scroll to "Podcasts" on the main menu, find the name of the podcast I wanted to hear, click on an episode and only that one would play. If I wanted to listen to all the episodes of that particular podcast, I'd access it through the Playlist feature.
The system above for playing a single episode doesn't seem to work on the iPod Classic 120 GB. All the episodes play no matter how I access the podcast.
    What am I overlooking?
    Thanks.

I must have had the Shuffle setting turned on for the old iPod, but I forgot all about that.
Probably not! My 30GB video iPod will only play one Podcast episode at a time and this does not change by using shuffle. I think your 60Gb iPod was the same as the 30GB.
As S_Edwards has posted and as you have found, the Classic does use shuffle to alter the way Podcasts are played. Quite why Apple use shuffle to control single or continuous playing of Podcasts, and then not document it either, is a mystery.
As a useful reminder, while the Podcast is playing, the screen display will show 1 of 1 to denote single-episode mode or 1 of x to denote continuous-episode mode.

  • What ios system can the IPod touch 4th gen. update to

What ios system can the iPod touch 4th gen. update to?

I wouldn't buy a second-gen iPod touch at any price now, and particularly not for only $50 less than a fourth-gen model. There are far too many apps that require a version of iOS newer than what a second-gen iPod can run. Up to you, though.
    Regards.

  • Is there a protective casing still available for the ipod classic?

Hello, I am searching for a version of the ipod for my autistic brother as a replacement for his portable CD player. I was thinking of going with the ipod classic, as the buttons may be less confusing for him than a touch screen. My largest concern is the possibility of him dropping the ipod. He is 6 foot, and has no recent history of dropping his CD player, but that is still a concern. Is a protective case for the ipod classic still available? Any other suggestions as to what would be good for him? Thanks

Sorry, but there is not.  There may be for the iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad though.
