What's the best setup for a dedicated boot drive (Lion) with a separate storage drive?

I have a 120GB SSD and 4 x 3TB drives striped together for storage on my hot off the shelf Mac Pro. This may be an elementary question and I'm sure it's like every other post in these forums but what really is the best way to maintain a dedicated OSX Lion boot drive while keeping user profile type stuff on the storage drive? A few thoughts...
1) I know the risks with striping, which is why it will all be backed up online. Yes. Online.
2) I am specifically curious about how to keep pretty much all of the User folder type stuff on the storage drive...at least the big stuff.
Any recommendations? I know Win7 had some big problems with doing this kind of thing. My main goal is to be able to reinstall OS X every day if I wanted and not affect the users or their respective data. Possible?

The desktop is implemented by a folder by the same name in the Home folder for each user.
Before you move it, it will be here:
/Users/<your_shortname>/Desktop
I would first try providing an alias in Finder to replace that Folder.
If that does not work, you may need to use Terminal to create a Symbolic Link.
ln -s  <desired location> <where the link should be created>
You can open up terminal and type in man ln to see the other options and how the command works.

  • What is the best practice for creating master pages and styles with translated text?

I format translated text all the time for my company. I want to create a set of master pages and styles for each language and then import those styles into future translated documents. That way, the formatting can be done quickly and easily.
What are the best practices for doing this? As a company this has been tried in the past, but without success. I'd like to know what other people are doing in this regard.
    Thank you!

I create a master template that is usually void of content, with the exception I define as many of the paragraph styles I believe can/will be used with examples of their use in the body of the document--a style guide for that client. When beginning a new document for that client, I import those styles from the paragraph styles panel.
Exception to this is when in a rush I begin documentation first, then begin new work. Then in the new work, I still pull in those defined paragraph and or object styles via their panels into the new work.
There are times I need new styles. If they have broader applicability than a one-off instance or publication, then I open the style template for that client and import that style(s) from the publication containing the new style(s) and create example paragraphs and usage instructions.
    Take care, Mike

  • What is the best setup for cable modems/routers for mac?

I use a MacBook Air and currently have CableOne as my ISP. I use the AirportExpress for my router. To upgrade to faster speeds I need to upgrade my modem. Am thinking about using a modem/router combination. What is the best set up for me?
Do modem/combos work well with Mac?
Also - would it be better to upgrade to an Airport Extreme? We had a housefull of Mac people for Christmas and the Airport Express couldn't handle all the devices very well at all.
    Your wisdom is appreciated. Thanks.
    Dave Weitz

By the way, CableOne lists mainly Motorola modems and combos as supported equipment.
    Thanks.

  • What is the best setup for webserver failover

Need to know the pros and cons of setting failover for webservers and what products are available.

You can consider the following choices:
    1) failover services supported with Sun Cluster 3.0.
    2) load balancing: Alteon, Cisco Redirector, BigIP etc
    Thanks

  • What is the best setup for my house?

    I have Airport Extreme (N-series)
Ok, i have my black macbook (N built-in)
and i have a desktop, which i will be using it as a wireless (it will be in the basement)
Thus should i purchase another extender? since my desktop doesn't have a wireless capability?
if so, should i purchase AirPort Express Base Station with AirTunes so that way i can get a wireless for my desktop?
    thanks.

What make/model of computer is this "desktop"?
Sure, you could configure an Airport Express as a remote base station, and cable this desktop computer to it. There may be other more elegant options though - but we can't suggest possibilities without knowing what type of computer this desktop is. For example, if it is a PC running Windows then there are all sorts of easy low cost options for putting it on your wireless network at "n" speeds.

  • What is the best setup for Photoshop CS5 on a Dual Drive Laptop?

I have a new W701ds with Windows 7, 16 gig of ram, drive C is a 256GB SSD, the second drive is 7200rpm 500GB HDD. I want to use was thinking about partioning the second drive to allow for backup. .

    Welcome to the forum.
If the partition is ONLY to be used for backup, you are probably OK, but if you plan on using it for say Scratch Disks, I would hold off on that.
With the fast SSD Drive 0, you will have your OS and programs there. Then you will have your images and your Scratch Disks on Drive 1. Even faster would be to have the Scratch Disks on Drive 2, but you only have the SSD and the one SATA HDD, so the former is as good as it gets.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • What is the best setup for ipads in an elementary school system

I would like to know how others are using Ipads in schools in terms of Apple IDs (one or many), restoring to a base line backup, synching ...

Visit the iPad Educators Ning - you'll find a much more specialized audience there. The EdTech listserv is also a good resource.

  • What's the best program for HS Students to do reports with?

Hi. I am so confused with all the new programs out there that I just don't see what I need or know what to look at! I have a teenager in High School that is always doing school reports and I need to download a program so that she can save and print out all of her reports and projects. Does anyone know which program I should look at for this? I just need to have the basic....and cheapest.
    Thanks!
    Michelle

    Hi Michelle,
NeoOffice does have the advantage of being quite compatible with MS Office files, should that become an issue.
You should also check out Apple's Pages, part of the iWork suite of applications. A free demo is available for download from Apple; should you decide this is the route to go, the price is $79, or $99 for a 'Family licence' which allows you to install and use the application on more than a single computer (up to 5, if memory serves).
One other possibility is to use TextEdit, supplied with the OS X operating system. Tiger and Leopard versions of Text Edit are quite capable once their features are understood. You'll find TextEdit in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder.

    Barry

  • What is the best product for creating/redesigning employee benefit guides (with a epub function)?

I am looking at InDesign CS6... your thoughts?

I think tables will be more of an issue/concern than what version of Indesign you use.
Here is a link to EPUB Assessibility with tables, notice the first sentence "When tables are not structured accessibly, the data they contain can quickly become a meaningless sea of numbers..."
I am not suggesting this cannot be accomplished, however it may require a lot structing, formatting, modifying and testing.

  • Just bought a 3TB Time Capsule for a small office. Will have 4 users with MacBooks. What would ne the best setup for time machine individual backups and internet sharing in a secure way?

Just bought a 3TB Time Capsule for a small office. Will have 4 users with MacBooks. What would ne the best setup for time machine individual backups and internet sharing in a secure way?

Set up each Mac for Time Machine backups in the normal way.  Time Machine will keep each backup separate on the Time Capsule, so users will only be able to see the backups of their own Mac.
Yes....there are convoluted workarounds that might allow one user to see the backups of another.....IF...they know the administrator password of the "other" Mac.
As far as Internet sharing, all users will have access to the Internet if they have a wired or wireless connection. If a Mac connects using wireless, it is possible to limit the time that they are allowed to connect to the network.
For example, you might limit the ability to connect to the wireless from say each Weekday from 8 AM to 6 PM.
With a wired Ethernet connection, you cannot limit access times to the Internet.

  • What's the best photograph for a no background image?

I am about to photograph some products and would like to make a set up where I can photograph each of the products in the same setting/lighting. Then, when I go to open/edit them in PhotoshopCS4, I can take out the background and have just the image. Then, I can place that image ontop of any background I want. There is one bad thing. Some of these have a clear top where you can see thru them. Does or will that make a difference?
I want to set it up like they do for the weather on television, have a blue background and erase all of the blue showing. Then the only thing showing in the end is the digital background that was added in by computer and the weatherman(unless he's wearing a blue tie, in which case you can see the info through him). But my question still stands, what is the best setting for this and/or background color, how should the photographs be taken and then opened and edited(removing the background) using PhotoshopCS4?
We have a lighting set up, a 30" x 30" x 30" light tent setup, 3 lights with Pro Light Reflectors(one on the left, one on the right and one on top), 1 white and 1 black background and a box to place the images on. I'm using a Nikon D100.
    Attached in a photo example.
This was taken with the black background and you can see the black through the bottle. I erased all of the surrounding black, but the dark shades still show on the sides.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Sean

The whole point is that these photographs will be used for the book, manuals, magazines, ads... The backgrounds will not always be the same.  That's my main problem. I am trying to figure out a way for the glass of the bottles to be "glass" images or "see through" so that when the photograph is placed on a background of, let's say, flowers, the flowers would show through. The edges of the glass are still solid and the flowers would not show thru them, but...
Is this type of thing possible for printing quality photographs?
Note - In the attched photo, it can be seen that the black background can be seen the plastic cap.

  • What is the best app for backing up my mac. I do publication work and need to save my work?

what is the best app for backing up my mac. I do publication work and need to save my work?

My answer does not have the black Apple logo but the hardearned black belt of (bad) experience.
There is one problem with TimeMachine. It can get corrupted out of the blue with no warning and it will not want to restore correctly (as an added "bonus" you get to find this out the "hard" way, when you need it most). Plus it takes ages for the data to be copied back, sometimes days. Haven't tried my 600gb backup on Mavericks but Mountain Lion had this knack of breaking Timemachine after a couple of months.
To back up my entire server is use SuperDuper. It mirrors the drive to an external one (usb for example) The cool thing is you can use that usb drive and start the OS X from it (by holding Alt when you hear the boot chime).
This way you have a working copy of your entire machine. You can even go to another mac and boot it from there. I literally ran the OS X Server in my company from a usb drive on an old MacBook Pro until i got around to fix the problems with the actual server machine.
This has saved me twice already as the Hitachi drives Apple uses, tend to die like clockwork after 4000-5000 hours of use with no warning.

PS. As a sidenote... SSDs are more reliable than a normal HDD (not to mention faster) I can't stress this enough, my Server is on two SSDs now. I can't tell you how stress free the setup is, it doesn't feel like a computer but more like a router, it just works... forever. After two years with SSDs my server has had two days of downtime and their health is at 97%, they will literally last 100 years with normal use. I'd go so far as to recommend you buy an SSD and move your old HDD to an external enclosure and use that as a usb backup. (for SSDs i use Plextor / Lite-On M3s (older) or the M6s (newer))

  • What's the best APP for remote desktop viewing?

There are so many ... !
Also, what's the best app for file sharing between ipad and computer? Thanks!

Yeah, I guess doing extensive editing with DTG isn't much fun. The only way to get it from DTG to Pages is to email the file from DTG to yourself. DTG lets you email any of its files. Then from the iPad's email, open the file in Pages (when you open the document there will be an "Open in Pages" button on the top right). However, the only way to get it back into DTG is to again email the Pages file back to yourself (as a Word file), open it from your computer, replace the old file with this one and then resync with DTG.
There's also a bug in DTG's reader which tends to cut off one side of the doc when you scroll thru it. Hopefully DTG will have an update soon. They say it's coming on their app page. I think you'll be much happier with it when that happens.
Go to App Support from the App page of FileBrowser in the App Store. There on the right of the opening web page you'll see setup instructions for the Mac and Windows XP (the Windows XP instructions work pretty much the same way for everything up to and including Windows 7). That should get you up and running with FileBrowser. It's really pretty easy once you know what to put in those blanks.
Sorry you're not happy with these. Hope they get to be a better experience for you. Feel free to email me with any questions you may have.

  • What is the best Monitor for Video editing & Graphic Design?

    Hi every one,
I would like to find out what is the best monitor for video editing and graphic design that you recomend, I am trying to buy one but not sure which one is good and not expansive.
    Thanks very much

I don't want 2 monitors, so a single 27inch model just what I need... plenty of room for PPro, or I can have a Word document and a Text file open and side by side
    John,
That is personal taste and there is no discussing taste. However, from my perspective, and that is personal, I prefer 3840 x 1080 resolution with dual monitors over 1920 x 1080 with a single monitor, but that is because I very often have Firefox, Filezilla, Dreamweaver and some other applications open at the same time, switching between the Adobe forums, Gmail accounts, Notebook results from the PPBM5 data submissions, PPBM5 form submissions, MySQL access, phpadmin pages to update the database, the PPBM5 results pages and various DW .php pages for the maintenance of our database and switching back and forth between various versions of PR. I occasionally really run out of real estate with all these applications and could not consider a single monitor with only 1920 x 1080 resolution, even if it were a 105" screen. In the future I would even like to have a four monitor setup (with MPE hardware support) in a two by two configuration, so that I can freely move my application screens around.
If that happens, notice I say if and not when, my preference for a monitor would be something like 4 Samsung F2380 monitors. Small bezel, great display and panel, affordable.
