What's the best way to parse a BSTR in TestStand?

I receive a BSTR from an OLE interface; what is the best way to parse this into something understandable? Has anyone written a routing for this?

Hi,
If you are using a OLE interface I think you will be using the Active X Automation adaptor.
TestStand Active X Automation Adaptor automatically converts BSTR when it store the data in a TestStand variable.
Then you should be able to use the regular string functions which are available in TestStand to parse the strings.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.

  • What is the best way to keep your macbook pro in tip top condition. performance wise

    What is the best way to keep the performance of a macbook pro in tip top shape.  Over the years my computer seems to act like a pc with all of its hicups and lockups.
    I am running mountain lion and this computer is approx 2 years old.
    Not sure if there is some sort of software that will help with this or is there something else I can do.
    Thanks
    GAJ

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; all should be made directly from the original data. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
    Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of trouble with system updates.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
    It's not much of an exaggeration to say that the whole "utility" software industry for the Mac is a fraud on consumers. The most extreme examples are the "CleanMyMac" and “MacKeeper” scams, but there are many others.
    As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for, and doesn't change the way other software works.
    Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception to the above rule. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction.  Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
    Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve. Do not rely on "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
    4. Don't install bad, conflicting, or unnecessary fonts. Whenever you install new fonts, use the validation feature of the built-in Font Book application to make sure the fonts aren't defective and don't conflict with each other or with others that you already have. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. Deactivate or remove fonts that you don't really need to speed up application launching.
    5. Avoid malware. Malware is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X was once so rare that it was hardly a concern, but malware is now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
    There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
    Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must come directly from the developer's website. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from the web, without your having requested it, should go straight into the Trash. A web page that tells you that your computer has a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with it, is a scam.
    In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
    Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
    6. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem.
    While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage use and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
    If storage space is running low, use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move seldom-used large files to secondary storage.
    7. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
    To use a Mac effectively, you have to free yourself from the Windows mindset that every computer needs regular downtime maintenance such as "defragging" and "registry cleaning." Those concepts do not apply to the Mac platform. A computing device is not something you should have to think about very much. It should be an almost transparent medium through which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a machine that is always whining for your attention like a neurotic dog, use a PC.
    The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

  • Which is the best way to parse nested XML

    Hello, I am just getting back into using ColdFusion and I am
    working on a project that needs to parse some XML.
    The XML is generated by a third party document.
    I figured out how to grab individual values and such, but I'm
    not sure what is the best way to grab a value in relation to where
    it is in the XML.
    Following is a rather simplified example of the XML
    I need to grab the value of 'Rich Text' in relation to the
    'ID name' value.
    <project>
    <CT text>
    <Group>
    <id name = text1>
    <Rich Text>some sample text</Rich
    Text>
    </id>
    </Group>
    </CT Text>
    <CT text>
    <Group>
    <Group>
    <id name = text1>
    <Rich Text>some sample text</Rich
    Text>
    </id>
    </Group>
    </Group>
    </CT Text>
    <CT text>
    <id name = text2>
    <Rich Text>some more sample text</Rich
    Text>
    </id>
    </CT Text>
    </project>
    Once parsed, the info I need to output on the page would look
    like
    text 1
    some sample text
    text 2
    some more sample text
    The part that makes this difficult for me is that there may
    be 0 'Group' values or there might be a number of them. As such, I
    can't just grab the value by listing the tree out, since it changes
    depending on the document (there are thousands of these documents
    that I need to parse).
    From what I have seen in some XML examples, there are a
    number of ways to go about doing this, but before I put a lot of
    time into any of them, I was wondering what the 'best' way to do
    this is.
    XSLT? XMLSearch? Structures? Some combination of those or
    other functions?
    P.S. what little I know of using ColdFusion with XML all
    comes from the doc written by Nate Weiss.
    I was a bit let down that after spending well over $1,000 for
    ColdFusion, Adobe left out the only two books that were worth
    printing (the CFML reference guide and the Advanced book). It
    wouldn't have bothered me as much if there was something on the
    product page listing the manuals that said 'we only actually give
    you 2 of the ones listed'.
    Best regards
    Kevin R.

    Hello,
    Could someone do me a huge favor and provide some sample code
    that would parse/output the above xml so that the output would look
    something like the following. . .
    text 1 = some sample text
    text 2 = some more sample text
    The problem I am having is displaying the xmltext for the
    RICH TEXT element in relation to the ID element.
    The code below will return the value of the RICHTEXT
    (incorrectly named in the original XML examples) easily enough, but
    I need to have it show which text number it is.
    Best regards,
    Kevin R.

  • What's the best way to read JSON data?

    Hi all;
    What is the best way to read in JSON data? And is the best way to use it once read in to turn it into XML and apply XPath?
    thanks - dave

    jtahlborn wrote:
    without having a better understanding of what your definition of "use it" is, this question is essentially unanswerable. Jackson is a fairly popular library for translating json to/from java objects. the json website provides a very basic library for parsing to/from xml. which one is the "best" depends on what you want to do with it.Good point. We have a reporting product ([www.windward.net|http://www.windward.net]) and we've had a number of people ask us for JSON support. But how complex the data is and what they want to pull is all over the place. The one thing that's commin is they generally want to pull down the JSON data, and then put specific items from that in the report.
    XML/XPath struck me as a good way to do this for a couple of reasons. First it seems to map well to the JSON data layout. Second it provides a known query language. Third, we have a really good XPath wizard and we could then use it for JSON also.

    using DOM parser we can parse the xml file but can we write to XML file?Sure. That's the inverse operation of parsing, and it's called "serializing".
    The usual way to serialize a DOM to a file is to create a Transformer and apply the identity transformation to the DOM. However there are also third-party XML serializers that don't take that approach.I have not understood what the identity transformation mean. but i have searched for an example and found the following way to do it using Transformer. I hope what i find is right.
    Transformer tFormer = TransformerFactory.newInstance().newTransformer();
              tFormer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.METHOD, "xml");
              Source source = new DOMSource(doc);
              Result result = new StreamResult(new File(url.toURI()));
              tFormer.transform(source, result);

  • What is the best way to learn SAP Java

    Hi,
    I would like to understand basic principles of SAP Java, to check how it is working, primarily J2EE components like JMS, WS, EJB, Persistence... As I'm ABAP and PI consultant, I see this as my next step, sure I'm not aiming to be experienced Java developer beacuse this would require much more time than I have now.
    So far I read "Foundations of Java for ABAP Programmers" but I think that this is just a begining. I want to learn more stuff about SAP J2EE    and J2SE is for me, let say, clear.
    Also I start reading "Java Programming With The Sap Web Application Server" as my next book about SAP Java, but it is not quite that I don't like this book, it is somehow not interested for me.
    So I would like to hear your suggestions what is the best way or the best approach to learn SAP Java. I see this as future help for one ABAP and PI consultant. Also I've done some Mapping developments for PI (SAX and DOM parser), so really think for me to know Java better it will be "bigger plus" for me.

    I will suggest you SAP Elearning section on SDN about Java Development.
    Below is the link....

    It contains lot of practical examples which will keep you interested as well..
    But you wil lhave to be very selective there on whaich topic you wish to kick start.........
    For example there is one called :
    Java for ABAP Programmers
    ABAP Objects for Java Developers
    SAP Java World for ABAP Programmers

  • What is the best way to include an xml file in JSP?

    I have a jsp page that I need to include an xml file. The xml file
              uses an xsl to render the file. What is the best way to include the
              xml file and still maintain the structure of the style sheet?
              Thanks
              Jennifer

              The best way is using the tag lib. If you cannot, but you can use JAXP, you can
              try
              javax.xml.transform.Transformer.transform(Source xmlSource,
              Result outputTarget)
              throws TransformerException
              You construct the transformer with you xsl, use you xml file or DOM to form xmlSource,
              and use JSPWriter "out" to form outputTarget (StreamResult). But if your JSP page
              generates the xml itself, tag lib is the only way.

  • What is the best way to sort an XML document in WLI 8.1?

    I have the schema for the XML and I want to sort the data. What is the best way to do this?

    I'm not sure if you want the result of the sorting to be a sorted XML document or a sorted object tree but anyway both XSLT and XQuery support sorting so you could use a Transformation control to execute an XQuery or XSLT transformation to sort the data. Another option (if you are not comfortable writing XQuery or XSLT) would be to use XmlBeans and programmatically sort the data. A word of warning though, these processes are quite memory intensive and if the XML document you are sorting is large (say over 10 MB) your server might run out of memory. In this case you might be better of just parsing the document with SAX and then sorting the result objects.

  • What is the best way to set up iTunes on our home network so all family members have access to all of our itunes library, even music we don't have on the cloud?

    I have five different people using 10 different apple devices on one itunes account in our family.  We have had trouble sharing.  What is the best way to set up itunes on our home network?  We have purchased music that sits on icloud, but we also have music we have imported from our previous cd library.  Our itunes program keeps crashing and dumping everyone's playlists.  So far we have all been using just the one desktop computer to sync to because we can't figure out how to share the same librarly and playlists on multiple computers in our home so devices can be synced at any location as well as playlists and purchases be made.

    What is the best way to set up itunes on our home network?
    One iTunes library per person.  One iTunes account per person.
    If people wish to share songs, they can make copies.
    When the inevitable day comes when the kids get older, you will not have to come back here and post asking how all that stuff can get separated!

    Find My iPhone is good for misplaced iPhone but not good for thief and it was never meant to be.
    You chance of getting it back is very small.
    There are a few things you can try.
    Try remote lock/wipe your iPhone through Find My iPhone.

  • What is the best way to read and manipulate large data in excel files and show them in Sharepoint

    Hi ,
    I have a large excel file that has 700,000 records in it. The excel file has a few columns that change every day.
    What is the best way to read the data form the excel file in fastest and most efficient way.
    2 nd Problem,
    I have one excel file that has many rows each row contain some data that has certain keywords.
    What I want is  to segregate the data of rows into respective sheets(tabs ) in the workbook.
    for example in rows have following data
    1. Alfa
    2beta
    3 gama
    4beta
    5gama
    6gama
    7alfa
    in excel
    I want there to be 3 tabs now with each of the key words alfa beta and gamma.

    Hi,
    I don't really see any better options for SharePoint. SharePoint use other production called 'Office Web App' to allow users to view/edit Microsoft Office documents (word, excel etc.). But the web version of excel doesn't support that much records as well
    as there's size limitations (probably the default max size is 10MB).
    Regarding second problem, I think you need some custom solutions (like a SharePoint timer job/webpart ) to read and present data.
    However, if you can reduce the excel file records to something near 16k (which is supported rows in web version of excel) then you can use SharePoint Excel service to refresh data automatically in the excel file in SharePoint from some external sources.

    I have not bought the iMac yet but will do so very soon and just want to make sure I have what I need to get everything setup including adding the old faithful 2005 30" cinema display.  Currently I am driving the old 30" cinema display with a macbook pro also purchased 2005 and happy to say I got a lot of good miles out of this rig.  What's the best way to connect the old 30" monitor as a second display for the new generation iMacs?
    Other Questions
    I can find online new in unopened box a 2012 iMac 27" i7 with 1T Fusion Drive for $1899 no sales tax.  This seems like a pretty good deal since I notice the same is available from Apple refurbished for $100 more plus sales tax.  I know that they say the Fusion drive is a lot faster on 2013 models but some of the speed tests I reviewed online showed the 2012 i7 and 2013 i7 very close on speed for both storage and processing.  Any thoughts?
    I don't like changing batteries so I would buy a separate Apple keyboard with numeric pad since it only comes with wireless keyboard.  I'm a trackpad enthusiast having been using my macbook pro trackpad with current set up; and I am prepared to buy the Apple trackpad and replace batteries every 2 months but I would greatly prefer USB connection and rechargeable trackpact.  I know Logitech makes one so if anyone is using and knows how it compares to Apple's I'm all ears.

    You can use USB for the Apple trackpad.

  • I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?

    I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?
    Facts:
    In moving to a new iMac, I copied the iPhoto library to an external HDD assuming that I would point the new iMac to the backed up iPhoto Library
    All worked fine when I pointed the new library but noticed that some folders contained aliases and not the original file. So when I attempt to open that photo it can't find it because the alias is pointing to another drive.
    I do have all original photos from a couple of external HDDs. In the folders titled, "Originals" (from older versions of iPhoto) and "Masters" (from current iPhoto)
    I'm thinking I can create a new folder and drop the original files and make that my new iPhoto library. Is there a better way to rebuild my library? I do not want to create any future aliases.
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    do you have a strongly recommended default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a referenced library - you have unchecked that option?
    It sounds like you have a referenced library and are now experiancing one of the very siginificant drawbacks of a referenced library and one of the many reasons they are strongly not recommended
    Also note that iPhoto '11 may use alises in the originals folder as part of the upgrade
    It is important that we understand exactly what you have and what is not sorking - what error messages you are getting
    You must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure of content of the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it  --  and you can not rebuild yoru librtary - only iPhoto ir iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can rebuild a library unless you are a SQL programmer and understand the structure that iPhoto uses
