When i try to open firefox it tells me windows cannot access the specified device, path or file, you may not have the apperioate permission to open the item. I have tried to uninstall and re install and it still will not open.

this happened when i downloaded the latest patch and i have not been able to access it since.

I would expect wording related to connection, but see

  • Firefox updated to 6.0.1 and now I cannot open it, or even reload it, without the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file, You may not have the approprate permission to access the item."

This is a new problem... I've never had issues with Firefox before. I use firefox for everything at work and it is beyond inconvienent to not be able to access my websites, etc.

Do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.<br />
Don't remove personal data when uninstalling.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can skip the step to create a new profile, that is not necessary for this issue.

When I try to open iTunes, I get this error message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I've been able to uninstall all Apple products except iTunes as I get this error message: "The Installer has insufficent privileges to modify this file: C:\Program Files\i Tunes\Acknowledgments.rtf." I've had the iTunes on my laptop for a year and a half with no problems until now.

Installed FF 16, 17, 18. Will not open in normal administrator login, nor with "Run as administrator" but will in W7 safe mode. Changed permissions (had to do it in W7 Safe Mode, normal login would not allow (logged in as an administrator) could not delete the Mozilla files in normal login. On rare occasions, with a new install, I could get it to open once, then not again. Searched the reg for any mention of Mozilla or FF and cleaned it. Tried FF safe mode, no luck. Checked permissions after taking ownership and propagating full ownership rights to all FF files, many reboots, no luck. Chrome, IE and SeaMonkey work fine. Using a fairly new install of W7 Professional 64 bit, on a Dell Optiplex 990 i7, 16GB ram. Had the same problem with another user on an identical box. No problem on other computers No other program problems.

I should have been a bit more definitive.
I have uninstalled FF, with the windows uninstaller, by manually cleaning the files and the registry of any mention of FF or Mozilla, and by running Revo uninstaller - always rebooting and checking to see if the files are indeed gone. (I have set windows file preferences to see all files, including system files.) I have run 4 AV/malware scanners and found nothing but a few tracking cookies. I download, from Mozilla.org, (http://download.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/18.0/win32/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%2018.0.exe) a fresh copy of the Firefox Setup 18.0.exe each time and install when logged in as an administrator and choose "Run as Administrator". I get the same result each time I try to open Firefox. Consistently does not open, gives the error: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla\firefox.exe Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." This happens even when I run the .exe file from the x86 program directory. I have also attempted to run in XPsp3 compatibility mode to no avail,
    I make the following assumptions:
    The system is not infected
    I am doing clean installs
There is no existing trace of FF on the system
I get identical results on one other W7 64 bit Optiplex 990 system with an i7 processor and 16 GB or ram.
I CAN run in windows safe mode with networking.
I have no other software or hardware issues.

Firefox would not load Yahoo home page properly, checked add ons and plugins-no problem. So unistalled. When reinstalling, went through until the end, then I get:
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item.
I went through the Help section on this page, even to right clicking the file and "run as administrator". It went through and restarted the computer. When I went to look for the program, it wasn't listed in All programs. I searched files and the only thing there was the same message as above.

    Hey All
I have actually managed to find out what it is so thanks for any suggestions up to now.
At work, we use McAfee AntiVirus.  Part of this is McAfee SiteAdvisor 3.5 for Internet Security.
In Policy Catalog in the McAfee ePO system under SiteAdvisor, there is Hardening setting.  What this does is block any unauthorised browser from being able to run.  Safari, along with the likes of Opera and some others are automatically blocked by this.  Once you uncheck, to allow users to run Safari, it works fine.

  • When attempting to download a program I get the error message, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file".

The message goes on to say, "You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item".
There are no other users, accounts on this computer. What are they talking about, I am the Administrator, operator, only user!

I've tried all of these things. And again just to confirm. When removing Firefox from the Firewall despite the setting on it only allowing sites that are listed, still goes through, what's that about?

  • When I open Firefox it says that Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. And that I may not have the permissions to access this item.

There is only one user profile on the computer which is obviously administrator and the file that it says can't be accessed doesn't actually have a pathway in the section.

  • When trying to start firefox an error message comes up stating windows cannot access the specified device, path or file or that I may not have appropriate permission?

I was online when a mcaffee alert came up saying that real time scanning was turned off. After prompting it to turn back on it did but only for a short time. Shortly after that Firefox shut down. Now when clicking on the shortcut and the firefox emblem in the start menu the aforementioned error message comes up. Now certain programs are firewalled.

    Any suggestions please?

  • Can't open iTunes. Error messages says: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item." Help?? (Windows 7)

I have tried uninstalling iTunes and all of it's "Apple counterparts" (like Quicktime, Bonjour, etc)
I have also tried to restore my computer to before it crashed, and that didn't work either.
    Please help!

    Hi
Some required information are needed for us to help you.
    Hi NabeelOmer,
We wonder if you have taken any action such as system restore after this issue occurred.
You might also try this command to restore your access control list.
Run this command to navigate to the drive letter, example is D

Visual Studio made changes for your whole system, if the file has been moved or deleted this error would occur.
Since you mentioned that you get this error almost everywhere even in control panel. We suggest you repair/reinstall your Visual Studio first and check if it could be fixed.

Hold down the option key while starting iTunes and make an new library.  Will it open then? If so, you have a bad library.  With the new library import the library.xml version of the file in your iTunes folder.  This will make it 90% like before (some metadata are not identical, but I don't know which ones).

Whenever I click on iTunes store, it just takes me to this huge add to download the new version of iTunes. I have tried clicking the download box and downloading it, but it still will not let me past the add so I can buy music. What gives

this is a follow up from the profane post earlier....
i have done this twice in two other posts..
here is my problem.. i started off trying to update itunes, it failed twice and said i needed to install manually via tools.
the only place to get to tools is the pop up box that appears when you click check for updates.. if there is an available update then the pop up shows up with the quick time and itunes files to download. so i finally figured that out. i clicked on tools and manual update, four files were saved to a file. Apple mobile device support, another one similar, itunes, and another one i cant remember. I only downloaded the itunes file seeing as though thats all i needed to accomplish in the first place.
so then i restarted my computer bc you need to reboot and then reopen itunes for update to take effect. once i have itunes back open i plugged in my new 5s which i am trying to sync to my computer to get all my stuff back bc i lost my previous phone over the weekend.. once i plugged the phone in an error stating i needed to unistall the apple mobile device support and itunes and then reinstall. well i dont know where those files were originally stored on my computer AND since my itunes was updated, just not the other 3 associated files, when i click check for updates it says its up to date and then pop up containing the quick time and itunes does not pop up thus i cant get back to the tools tab to manually save the 4 files again.
so i was just going to uninstall itunes all together and then i thought well what happens if it erases all my photos apps songs etc... which would defeat the whole purpose in the first place of me trying to sync my new phone to get all my stuff back.
so i literally have no idea what to do at this point.. if you have read this you are probably just as confused as me...
