Where did I get System 10.2.8?

This has me completely baffled. I have two CRT iMacs, a Dalmation, and another much older machine. both are running system 10.2.8. Where the heck did I get that system? I need to completely erase and reload the HD in the Dalmation. It was horribly abused by college kids and is so jammed up with crap, conflicts, and ickyness that I just want to start fresh. There is nothing in it to save. But..I don't seem to have a system around to install! Every version of system 10 point anything that I have is on a DVD, and this machine does not have a DVD drive. Have I lost a system someplace? Or did I have 9.2.2 in it, and go thru upgrades to get it to 10.2.8? I'm completely baffled. That's just like my other even older imac with only a CD drive...how the heck did I get 10.2.8 into it? Was 10.2.8 once available to buy, or bundled with this machine? Can I copy a system 10 DVD install disc to an external HD, plug it in, and install from there? I have plenty of varying system 10 versions laying around..all legal paid for systems..saved from computers I've long since killed and retired, but how the heck can I install one?

Yes you could buy OS 10.2 at one time. Once you install OS 10.2 you can download the updates to get to OS 10.2.8.
Can I copy a system 10 DVD install disc to an external HD, plug it in, and install from there?

  • IPhone User Guide: where did I get this??

Okay, I've got an icon in my iPhone 3G for an app called "iPhone User Guide." I know that I added it, but I can't remember where I got it! When I search the App Store, it doesn't show up. Nor does it show up in my list of apps in iTunes. Am I losing my mind? Where did I get this??
    Thanks!

You can edit a post within 15 minutes after is was posted.
Apple includes access to iPhone user guide with the iPhone as a Safari bookmark. With a URL selected, at the bottom of the screen is a + icon. When the + icon is selected, the options are; Add Bookmark, Add to Home Screen, Mail Link to this Page, and Cancel.
Selecting Add to Home Screen creates a web clip (icon) for the selected URL on your home screen. Apparently you selected Add to Home Screen for the iPhone user guide's URL.
If you want to remove it, select any icon on the home screen where this webclip is located for 3 seconds or so until all icons begin to wiggle. There will be an X on the icon for apps you can delete, which are 3rd party apps only and the same for a webclip. Select the X on the icon for the webclip to delete it and then confirm the deletion. Select the Home button when finished.

  • I have been getting bogus phone calls on my mobile where did they get my number

I am getting nuisance calls on my mobile how do you stop this, and where did they get my number from?

You can ask for a new number.
They can get your number from anywhere you publish it. EE can't tell you how they get it though.

  • Where Did You Get Your MacBook?

For those that have a MacBook, where did you purchase it from? Even with the student discount, purchasing from the Apple store doesn't provide any savings because of the taxes (~$84.00 in NY). I know Amazon.com sells it, but it's pre-order.

No need to get defensive. I wasn't saying that people shouldn't use the Apple Store. I was saying that unless Apple recognises your problems as problems, they will not do anything for you. That is to say, issues such as heat, whine and other common issues people worry about here on this forum will not be addressed by the Apple Store geniuses because they don't consider these problems out of specifications. This also means that if you have these issues and decide you can't live with them, you most probably will not be able to return a macbook of MBP to them without a restocking fee.
Believe me, I was amazed that they were so unwilling to consider not charging me a restocking fee. I was very calm, told them about the issues (whine, heat, loose battery, warped lid) and told them that over the past 15 years as an Apple user I have never felt disappointed with an Apple product except for this one. I told them that I have purchased items for tens of thousands of dollars from Apple over the years and asked them if they would at least consider charging me just half the restocking fee given that these are problems SO MANY people are having. There are OBVIOUSLY issues with the MBPs. The guy (who claimed to be the 'lead' rep there) refused and told me, in the same breath, how much they 'love' my business, pointing me in the direction of the checkout so I could line up to get refund, minus the $200 fee for beta testing. How insulting and disingenuous is that!
There are stores that will accept your claim that an item is defective. Since Apple is the mothership they decide what is within spec while some other stores just trust you when you say your notebook has excessive heat problems or whines and therefore needs to be returned. Given the many problems reported, I would recommend anybody to buy from a store with a more generous and no hassle return policy. Getting an exchange will not help if all units have the same problems....

  • Where did Apple get my Alias?  How can I change it?

I have no idea why Apple is using this name as my Alias on everything. It's not something I would have ever chosen, so it must have been taken from a form somewhere. Questions:
    1) Where did it come from?
    2) How can I change it?
    3) If I can't change it, why not?
    4) If I can't change it, how can I get rid of it?
    Thanks.

    Hi, Donnie (or unknown) -
#1 - Don't know. Perhaps if your machine is a used one, the previous owner has autofill set in the browser with that for the name field. Or, if it is your name, if you did not specify something else as an alias it probably grabbed your name.
    #2 - You can't.
#3 - Because the forum software will not permit the change of an alias for anyone. Once an account has been created, the alias is locked for that account. You can change the associated email address and password, but not the alias.
#4 - You can't. Once an account has been created it exists, and can not be made to not-exist.
What you can do, though, is to no longer use that one. Create a new account, insert the alias you prefer, and let the old one age off into pages where no one looks.

  • Cool little icons - Where did they get these?

I ran across Depeche Mode's website months ago. I really like
the little icons they use at the bottom of the page for Facebook,
Youtube, Myspace etc. Where did these come from? Is it a Flash
product? Or is it a custom Flash icon their designer used? I would
love to get my hands on them if anyone recognizes them.

  • HT3669 Where did you get the driver information for the HP 4MV.  I cannot connect to MacBook Pro on 10.6.8 and believe you have information that might help.  Please advise ASAP.

Apple published a report - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669#HP - that states system 10.6.8 supports the HP LaserJet 4MV.  If this is accurate information, I would like to know where the drivers are located.  I have spent more than three hours with your technical support and no one has a clue how to make this combination work.  Please help ASAP.  Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
We are all users here. There is no one from Apple responding on these user forums.
You did not mention which interface you are trying to use, or what steps Apple support had you try already, so I'll start with basics.
Your mid-2009 MacBook Pro would have shipped with OS X 10.5 'Leopard', and OS X 10.5 and prior versions supported the AppleTalk network connection and protocols, as well as others.
OS X 10.6, 'Snow Leopard' dropped support for AppleTalk.
So, Snow Leopard 10.6.8 likely does contain the correct DRIVER for your printer, BUT if your printer was originally connected via AppleTalk, AppleTalk will not work with Snow Leopard. Period.
There is at least one recently-published workaround to connect your printer via Ethernet, provided that you have the OPTIONAL HP Ethernet MIO interface card installed in your HP LaserJet 4MV printer.
If your printer DOES have the optional Ethernet interface, you can reconfigure your printer to use Ethernet instead of Appletalk. No, it's not 'plug and play' like AppleTalk was, but patiently following detailed step-by-step instructions it can be made to work.
The HP forums contains brief instructions on how to configure MIO Ethernet, and once configured, how to select the 4MV driver within this thread:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-Printing-and-Scanning/Laserjet-4mv/td-p/1176843
This Macrumors forum thread contains a post by TrumpSAJ with more detailed configuration instructions:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=8748935#post8748935
Other World Computing has an older guide linked here:
    http://blog.macsales.com/1897-appletalk-not-available-in-snow-leopard
And a thread on Gigaom discussing some other alternatives to Ethernet (for a variety of printers):
    http://gigaom.com/apple/how-to-resurrect-your-appletalk-printer-in-snow-leopard/
In my opinion, if you don't already have an HP Ethernet MIO card installed in your circa 1995 printer, then it's time to buy a new printer. Spending more money to 'upgrade' something that old doesn't seem like a good investment.

  • Where did my Previous System folder go?

I upgraded my G5 yesterday from 10.3.9 to 10.5. Everything works fine after the upgrade. But I can't find the Previous System folder that should be on my hard drive.
When I upgraded, I planned to do an Archive and Install and preserve user settings, but I never saw that menu in the installer (I missed the "Options" button, duh). After the upgrade all my user accounts and data were still on the G5, so I'm assuming the installer did an "Archive and Install -- Preserve User Settings" by default.
But I don't have a Previous System folder anywhere on my hard drive. Any ideas what happened?
BTW, I have a clone of my 10.3.9 system on an external hard drive. I am considering doing an Erase and Install on the 10.5.7 internal G5 volume and using Migration Assistant to pull my user accounts from the clone to the internal hard drive. But my 10.5.7 system isn't broken, so maybe I shouldn't try to fix it. :-D

But I don't have a Previous System folder anywhere on my hard drive. Any ideas what happened?
The default installation method preserves your user accounts, data, and applications, but deletes and/or overwrites the previous system files.

  • Where can I get system software 7.1?

I have a mac SE that currently has System Software 7.0.1 on it and I have a 68030 accelerator and 4MB of ram. I would like to upgrade it to system software 7.1 and cannot find anyone at apple that knows there ever was a system 7 or where to download it or buy floppies of it. Anyone know?

System 7.1 is not available for download from Apple, but you can find complete 6.0.3, 6.0.5, 6.0.8, 7.0, 7.0.1 and 7.5.3 versions.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA33972
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA47341
Please note that the Macintosh SE is limited to handling 800K (2DD/DSDD) diskettes, unless it is an FDHD version. It is possible to install systems not on 800K floppies through other methods (network, external hard drive, et cetera).
Floppy disks (not 7.5.3) are supposed to be created using the Disk Copy 4.2 utility (the Make A Copy button).
    http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English -North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/Disk_Copy/
System 7.5.3 (slow on a computer of this kind) must be installed in a different way (see the text file).

  • Disappointed - Where did the file system go ?

Am I just missing the obvious ? My old HTC TouchPro 2 had an accessible and complete Windows 6.5 file system - Documents, Music, etc. Has that file system access been disabled on these Tropy's ? I have PDF fioles (maps, etc) and other files from the old phone that I want to use. Am I going to reactivate my TouchPro 2 - or is there a way to get to the file system on the Trophys ? Looks like Verizon needs to get more serious about Windows power users (read: BUSINESS clients) - TouchPro's were good but there is no meaningful replacement. Any advice ?

There is no file system. One way you can get PDFs from the old phone to the new phone is to send the PDFs by email to yourself again. Another way is you could access your SkyDrive (skydrive.live.com) and upload the PDF's there (you'd then go into the Office app and move to the 'locations' pivot. In either case, once you open the file in the Adobe Reader app, the PDFs will be stored on the phone until you delete the file yourself. I don't know what other file types you're trying to access, but I have yet to find a file type that won't open (Excel, Powerpoint, Word, TXT files work, MP3, WMA should work, ZIP files will redirect to Internet Explorer but they will be opened).
As far as Windows power users, that wouldn't be on Verizon, that would be Microsoft, and probably chances are it won't change.

Just having the same issue there, which is real not fun, I have not tried to contact them, but looking at  your experience I am not sure if I should.
My key comes from the back of a laptop o so I guess that would be a W7
OEM, and that could explain why you can't download a ISO from their website, would that also your case ?
Also could it be because we are attempting to get the ISO after the product became EOL ?

  • So where did I get those voices from...

After a recent hard drive meltdown, and the insanity of not having a back up, I have finally installed all my jam packs for garageband again. However, upon opening a song that I had saved, there are a few voices that are now missing (?) The only extra voices I ever had were from Apple Jam packs, so I'm not sure what has happened here.
As an example, some of the voices that are missing are Live Classical Piano, Echo Piano, Silicon Strings, Tremolo Whirly, and Vibrophone.
Does anyone recognise these voices, and can possibly tell me which jam pack they are on?

Should anyone else have the same query, these are from the initial Garage Band Jam Pack - full details of which can be found here:

  • Where does the svc system get its infos from?

The longer I work with Solaris 10, the more I dread this awful "services" construction and its unwieldy administration.
I have a newly setup machine with two zones, one created right after the other, meaning they should be identical.
/usr is, as usual, lofs'ed into both zones, and contains a /usr/local/samba dir with a handcompiled 3.0.30 release.
I have not created any manifests as I intended to simply delete the 'onboard' samba service and start the new version
    via the classical init script.
I boot both zones.. and one starts "/usr/local/samba/smbd -D -f /etc/smb.conf", and the other starts (or tries to) "/usr/sfw/sbin/smbd -D".
I inspected the manifest xmls for the network/samba service, and in both zones the entry lists /usr/sfw as start method.
svccfg listprop network/samba also reports /usr/sfw for both zones.
Where did the one zone get the info to start the /usr/local samba installation, and where did it get the (correct) conf file parameter?
Why does svccfg report a different startup method property than it really runs on svcadm enable?
I have grepped through all of /lib/svc, /etc/svc and /var/svc and nowhere is any reference to the /usr/local file nor the conf parameters.
Swapping the svc repository.db file between both zones also swaps the problem around - so it must be somewhere in there,
but as it's no longer a human readable file, I'm out of luck there. How did the /usr/local path and parameters get into that DB file?
Does the service system search the filesystem for known daemon binary names and other guesswork? And if it does such voodoo,
why didn't it do the same in the other identical zone?
rant Did we really need to get this svc "feature"? Until now I have seen no advantage from it, and only incurred a huge load of inconvenience,
be it the additional work of creating manifests for new services or debugging problems that I never had in a decade or two of init script usage.
We have all seen for many years how well this registry/service stuff worked on Windows..*/rant*

    What do you get for:
svcprop -p start/exec network/samba:defaultThat should display the start string it uses.
Where did the one zone get the info to start the /usr/local samba installation, and where did it get the (correct) conf file parameter?I can only assume that some program inserted that string into the service. As you said, it's not in the manifest, so it didn't come from there.

For starting a single job, you won't see the benefits as much.
Of course, the milestone services still run startup scripts out of /etc/rc[S23].d, so those are perfectly valid places to run a startup script.

  • Where did my ringtones go after iOS 6 update

After updating to iOS 6 my ringtones are gone on my iPhone 4? Anyone else have this issue? I can honestly say that I regret upgrading to iOS 6. First my music wasn't synching and I had to manually fix that myself, thanks to a post I found on here and now my ringtones are gone. The iOS 5 update was a pain in the rear, but this one is really making me consider a change.
When I connect my phone to my MAC and click on the phone in iTunes and then click on Tones only one of my ringtones show up. I had 5 or 6. When I go into my iPhone settings for sounds/ringtones the only tones that show up are the default crappy iPhone tones. Very frustrating that everytime I do an update I have to manually go in a fix some screw up. Steve Jobs passing will be the end of Apple.

Strange that they don't show up in itunes. Where did you get these ringtones from?
