It dropped from less than 1m onto a tiled floor, it has a plastic gel casing similar to my previous iPhone 4 which I dropped plenty of times and never even had a dint on the phone. I'm just wondering if the new glass, being thinner is a bit more brittle or was this bad luck on my part? Touch capabilities still work and everything else is fine..

I've been watching a few drop tests of iPhone 5 on YouTube and in similar situations the phone looks fine :( my screen didn't just crack the entire thing is completely shattered into hundreds of shards lucky i have a screen protector holding it all together hey. So went round to apple associated stores and they gave me an expected wait of 4-6weeks for repair. Aftermarket repair while voiding my warranty would be cheaper and quicker (within a few days) what is a better option?

FYI, if the phone was not originally sold in India, it can not be serviced in India. You will have to take it back to the country where it originated.

No, you simply do not. Apple does not sell insurance.
Apple offers an Extended Warranty called AppleCare.
Warranties doe not cover lost or stolen devices. Buy a new one.
