Why a sub class reference cannot hold a super class object

class a
class b extends a
public static void main(String args[])
b o1=new a();
I know this code wont compile but i need explanation on why subclass reference cannot hold superclass object

In short, because the subclass reference might be expected to point to an object with methods or members that the superclass object does not have.

  • PersistentProxy class usage for 3rd party super class

    Hi,

    Hy an thx for your help,
    first of all I have set the reference to the projects.  In the package: com.sap.training.dbaccess are the following files:

    EmployeeDTO.java
    SQLJConnection.sqlj
    SQLJConnection.sqlj (empty)
    in the package: com.sap.training.ejb i have the SessionBean an in this class I want to have a reference to the EmployeeDAO object as follow:
    public class EmployeeSessionBean implements SessionBean {

         public void ejbRemove() {
         public void ejbActivate() {
         public void ejbPassivate() {
         public void setSessionContext(SessionContext context) {
              myContext = context;
         private SessionContext myContext;
          * Business Method.
         public void createEmployee(EmployeeDTO employeeDTO)
                   throws EmployeeException {
                        try {
                             employeeDAO.createEmployee(employeeDTO);
                        } catch (SQLException e) {
                             e.printStackTrace();
                             throw new EmployeeException("Error while creating new employee: " + e.getMessage());
          * Create Method.
         public void ejbCreate() throws CreateException {
              // TODO : Implement
              employeeDAO = new EmployeeDAO();
    The second line is the bad one An sqlj file i have to use, if i handle with dataaccess / sql statements. Can I have an instance of an sqlj class?

  • Some class that cannot be resolved to a type

    Hello, I?m trying to use the[b] itext API for PDF creating from Java.
    In order to do this you must include the package .jar in your classpath and import com.logawie.text.* in your java file. All this steps are obviusly, and work correctly, in JAVA, but i?m trying to develope a web application, using JSP.
    Usually when I try to import a package from a JAR file that are allocated in the C:\j2sdk1.4.2_12\lib directory it doesn?t work. I solved this problem with some classes including it directly to the src.zip file. But with the itext package it doesn?t work, I don?t know if my solution is too bad, but with another classes it works, but with the itext package it says that all classes references "cannot be resolved to a type".
    Anyone can help me? Thanks in advance.

  • Calling a particular Method of all subclass from a super class

    hi
    I have a class 'A' which is a super class for 'B' ,'C' , 'D'
    my main method is in the class Main and while on the run i am calling methods of B,C,D form this main class.
    but as the first step of execution i need to call a init method which has been defined in all the sub-classes. and there can be any no of sub-classes and all will have the init method and i have to call the init method for all classes. is this possible to do that in runtime. ie i wil not be knowing the names of sub-classes.
    thanks
    zeta

    Sorry if i had mislead you all.
    I am not instantiating from my super class.
    as mjparme i wanted one controller class to do the
    init method calls
    so i got it working from the link you gave.
    URL url = Launcher.class.getResource(name);
    File directory = new File(url.getFile());
    This way i can get all the classes in that
    in that package
    and from reflection i can get whether it is
    her it is a sub class of the particular super class
    and i can call the init methods by making the init
    methods static
    thanks for the help
    zetaThis is a rather fragile solution.
    If the problem is one of knowing which subclasses exist, I would suggest specifying them explicitly via configuration (system property or properties file or whatever).
    One thing that's not entirely clear to me: Is the init going to be called once for each subclass, or once for each instance of each subclass? It sounds to me like it's once per class, but I want to make sure.

  • Calling the super class method from the subclass

    Hi all,
    I have a question about inheritence and redefinition of methods. Is it possible to call the superclass implementation of a method which is redefined in the subclass in another method of the subclass?There are possbilities like creation of an explicit super class instance or delegating the super class method implementation to another method which is also protected etc. What i mean is, is there a direct way of calling it?We have ,me,   as the reference for the instance we have(which is the subclass instance in this case), is there also a way of pointing the superclass implementation(with super we can reference in the subclass redefinition, my question is if we have such a parameter in other methods of the subclass too)
    Thanks in advance
    Sukru

    Hi,
    The super reference can only be used in redefined methods to call superclass implementation . So probably what you can do is use upcasting and access the required superclass implementation. I can think of only this way...;-)
    Ex data lr_super type ref to cl_superclass
    lr_super = lr_subclass.
    lr_super->method().

  • Regarding Super classes

    Hi,
    I have created one class in SE24. This class will be used as a super class for other classes.
    When subclasses are derived from this superclass, i want to make sure that some of the methods of superclasses are redefined by the subclasse compulsarily.
    So i want to force the subclasses to redefine complusarily some of the methods of its super class.
    Is this feasible. If so please let me know the corresponding approach.
    Thanks in advance !

    Hi,
    Check this out this will help you.
    Inheritance is the concept of passing the behavior of a class to another class.
    1.You can use an existing class to derive a new class.
    2.Derived class inherits the data and methods of a super class.
    3.However they can overwrite the methods existing methods and also add new once.
    4.Inheritance is to inherit the attributes and methods from a parent class.
    Inheritance:
    Inheritance is the process by which object of one class acquire the properties of another class.
    Advantage of this property is reusability.
    This means we can add additional features to an existing class with out modifying it.
    Go to SE38.
    Provide the program name.
    Provide the properties.
    Save it.

  • Super Class Examples of Exception

    HELP!!!
    I'm in need of assistance. I do not get Super classes and really how they work. Our book goes into such detail, it doesn't really give us a little example to work from for understanding. So here is a question: I need is Use Inheritance to create an exception class (ExceptionA) which is the super class, then subclasses ExceptionB class and ExceptionC class which both B and C classes inherit from A. We are suppose to write a program to catch block for type ExceptionA catches exceptions of types ExceptionB and ExceptionC.
    I can't grasp the concept of how to put these together. I'm not sure where the main method fits in all of these and does each have a try/catch that calls something from ExceptionA?

    Ok..I'm just looking for help, yes an ANSWER to how to utilize (1) inheritance and then (2) to incorporate that into my homework. For example, I have an ExceptionA Class super, a subclass ExceptionB and a subclass ExceptionC. I'm really lost as to where do I put the main method. I have 3 methods, where do I put these and how do I call them. Does anyone have a little snippet of code that shows very basically a super class, a subclass that calls the superclass, and another subclass that calls the superclass and where the main fits in all of that. Below is all my code.
    * Figure 13.17 Catching Exceptions with Superclasses
    package Dialogs;
    //superclass Exception
    public class ExceptionA
         //start of main method
            public static void main( String args[] )
               try
                    //call method one
                    one();
                catch ( Exception exception )
                     exception.printStackTrace();
                }//end of try/catch for main
              } //end main method
    }//end of ExceptionA
    package Dialogs;
    public class ExceptionsB extends ExceptionA
         // exceptions back to main with one
         public static void one() throws Exception
          try
              //call method two
              two();
          } // end try
          catch ( Exception exception )
             throw new Exception( "Exception in one", exception );
          } // end try/catch for method one
         } // end method one
    }//end of class ExceptionsB
    package Dialogs;
    public class ExceptionC extends ExceptionA
       // two method throws back to one
       public static void two() throws Exception
          try
              //call method 3
             three();
          catch ( Exception exception )
             throw new Exception( "Exception in two", exception );
          } // end of try/catch two

  • Cannot reference public instance method in class.

    Hi,
    I have a situation where when I open a class file in Oracle's Java Developer tool JDeveloper and I can see the following public method in the public class oracle.apps.fnd.wf.worklist.webui.NtfUtil :
    public java.lang.String isWorkflowAdminRole(oracle.apps.fnd.framework.webui.OAPageContext param1)
    The problem I have is that I cannot reference this method in my class even though it's a public method.
    From my class, I instantiate an instance of the NtfUtil class using
    NtfUtil ntf = new NtfUtil();
    When I try the following, the method is not found and I get a compilation error :
    String isWFAdmin = ntf.isWorkflowAdminRole(pageContext);
    I can however see other public methods in the class for example :
    public boolean isPerformer(java.lang.String param1, java.lang.String param2)
    In fact I can only see about 30% of the public methods in the class. The source file is not available.
    I am trying to find out why I can see some public methods in the class and not others. From within the editor it appears that there is no difference between the classes.
    Many thanks in anticipation of any assistance.
    Hopefully this question is not too stupid.
    David

    Apologies, this would have been a sensible thing to add to the message.....
    The section of code erroring is the final line :
    OAApplicationModule am = pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean);
    OADBTransaction oadbt = am.getOADBTransaction();
    oracle.apps.fnd.wf.worklist.webui.NtfUtil ntfUtil = new oracle.apps.fnd.wf.worklist.webui.NtfUtil(am, oadbt);
    String isWFAdmin = (String)ntfUtil.isWorkflowAdminRole(pageContext);
    Error is :
    Error(53,44): method isWorkflowAdminRole(oracle.apps.fnd.framework.webui.OAPageContext) not found in class oracle.apps.fnd.wf.worklist.webui.NtfUtil

  • Question on Assigning Sub Class References

    Hi Friends,
    I have small doubt regarding Assigning Class Reference to Super Class or Interface.
    List list= new ArrayList(); or Collection collection = new ArrayList();
    Map map=new HashMap();
    if i assing like above i may loose some of the specilized methods of ArrayList,Map etc...
    but most of the people are creating the objects in above fashion.
    can any body list out the advantages.
    Thanks in Advance!

    Agreed, you do lose some of the specialised methods.
    But sometimes its functionality you don't need.
    If your function takes a "Collection" it doesn't matter if its ArrayList or Set - you're just interested in the Collection Interface (common use case would be to obtain an Iterator to the underlying datastructure)
    Writing to the interface means that you can change the implementation at will.
    You can swap an ArrayList for a LinkedList. A HashMap for an LinkedHashMap or TreeMap. And the rest of your code is untouched, because it presumed nothing about the implementation.

  • How to use application class reference in the controller methods of BSP

    Hi,
    I have created a bsp application and also created an application class and assigned it to the application class. In the application class, I have created attribute TEXT type string(public and instance parameter).
    In the controller let's say main.do, I am trying to give a value to to the text by adding the following code.
    application->text = 'test'.
    I am getting syntax error saying field 'text' is unknown. It is not contained in one of the specified tables nor defined by DATA statement.
    Please can someone let me know how to use the application class in the coding with an example. I couldn't find how exactly this has to be reference. Please help.
    Best regards
    Siva

    Hi,
    if you are having main controller and sub-controller then you may need to use below coding to use application class reference.
    *Data declaration
      DATA:  obj_cntrl        TYPE REF TO cl_bsp_controller2,
             obj_sub_cntrl   TYPE REF TO z_cl_sub_cntl,
             application TYPE REF TO z_cl_application.
    *Get the controller
      CALL METHOD obj_main_cntrl->get_controller   "obj_main_cntrl is the object of main controller
        EXPORTING
          controller_id       = 'SUB'   "Controller ID
        RECEIVING
          controller_instance = obj_cntrl  .
      obj_sub_cntrl ?= obj_cntrl  .
      application ?= obj_sub_cntrl ->application.
    or simply use below code in your controller method.
      application ?= me->application.
    Thnaks,

    I get the following error: (it's not word for word but you get the idea)

            public var mainStatus:int;
            public function User()
                trace("User Created!");
                mainStatus = 0;
            public function setStatus(status:int):void
             mainStatus = status;
        public function getStatus():int
            return mainStatus;
    Ok, so far so good.
    now I created a new .fla file under the root of /flash_working/. The class file is in /com/mypackage/User.as
    in my .fla file I have:
    import com.mypackage.User;
    var myUser:User = new User();
    var i = User.getStatus();
    trace(i);
    That's all the code I have. Could someone please explain why it's giving me that error?
    If I try to access the public var mainStatus through user.mainStatus that gives a similar error saying:
    Error: Access of undefined property mainStatus through reference with a static type Class.
    Thanks for any help!

    the public getStatus() function that you created needs to be referred to through an instance of the class.
    So:
    import com.mypackage.User;
    var myUser:User = new User();
    var i = myUser.getStatus();
    trace(i);
    Also, an aside. You can create a getter/setter for status, to avoid having to do the function as such.
    package com.mypackage
        import flash.display.*;
        public class User extends Sprite
            public var mainStatus:int;
            public function get status():int
                return mainStatus;
            public function set status(value:int):void
                 mainStatus = value as int;
              public function User()
                trace("User Created!");
                mainStatus = 0;
    And then, you can call it as:
    import com.mypackage.User;
    var myUser:User = new User();
    trace(myUser.status);
    EDIT
    I just noticed that you made the variable public as well, which means you can access it without getter/setter or function.
    import com.mypackage.User;
    var myUser:User = new User();
    trace(myUser.mainStatus);

  • Why cannnot derived class pointer point to a base class object?

    Hi,
    Pleaseeee... explain me why cannot the derived class pointer point to a base class object.
    I know that Base class pointer can point to a derived class object.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Vig....

    Example:
    class Base
    { public: void foo(); } * pBase;
    class Derived : public Base
    { public: void bar(); } * pDerived;
    Now, what would happen if you assign pDerived = new Base() and then call pDerived->bar()?By forbidding such an assignment, compiler prevents you from writing error-prone code.

  • SOA WebLogic : Cannot load JDBC driver class

    Hi, I'm new to this Oracle SOA World. Currently I'm trying to configure environment on my system. I found a very useful document to install all related SOA component to my system, the document name was 'Quick Start Guide for Oracle® SOA Suite 11gR1 (11.1.1.5.0)'. I did all the steps written in the document and have installed all the components successfully, component including Database, Jdevelper, WebLogic Server, RCU, SOA suite, service bus, all are installed successfully.
    But when I'm trying to Configure Application Server (start -> Oracle SOA 11g-Home1), at one step 'Configure JDBC Component Schema' , here I'm getting this message
    * The driver class listed below was not found in product installation
    vendor: Derby
    Driver: org.apache.derby.jdbc.clientdriver
    A Test will not be performed on any database connections using this driver
    In addition, when i just ignore this message and continue installation, after installation when i run weblogic server then it gives error and gets terminated

    Hi:
    try placing the jars that represent ur driver, here
    For both Windows and Linux, you must perform the following steps:
    Drop the vendor-specific driver JAR files to the user_projects/domains/soainfra/lib directory.
    Drop the vendor-specific driver JAR files to the <Weblogic_Home>/server/lib.
    Edit the classpath to include the vendor-specific jar file in <Weblogic_HOME>/common/bin/commEnv.sh
