Why are the File Symbols of miniscule size?

If I control-click and select Show layout alternative (this may be an erronous retranslation from Swedish back to English: hope you can understand me anyhow) I find a screen for e g the Desktop showing various alternatives (Symbol size, space between symbols etc). Also Preview of symbols can be selected. If I select this option, the file symbols shrink to become almost invisible. I have not observed this behavior before. So I don't know what affects this change. Hope you can help me. I have made screen shots showing the difference. But I don't know how to attach them to this post.
Best regards,
Leif

Hello Myorse, Certainly screenshots would have helped. At this point, can suggest that you could try to use the 'slider' of the icon size to adjust the size. I tried to make this smallest on my computer and it reduced to size 16x16, which is small but not 'almost invisible' as you say. Try to move the slider and see if they spring back to visible size.
If that does not help, you might have to trash your preferences file.

  • Why are the file sizes of exported jpegs so small?

I shoot raw, studio portraits mostly. I import to Lightroom 5 as DNG and then edit. Upon exporting as jpegs, the file sizes end up way too small, some of the cropped and/or black & white conversions as small as 560 KB, even with slider to 100%. Un-cropped color photos are ending up from 1.5 to 3MB. What am I doing wrong?

    Jim,
Thank you for your response. I think some of the difficulties in this thread are that there have been more than one person reporting issues, which may or may not be exactly the same or different from the initial one reported by the original poster. Then, anyone else commenting can easily intermix bits and pieces from any or all of the other posters interrelated issues. Also, I should have added to my last response in clarification what I meant about the overall dimensions. I was referring specifically to inches, not file size, not resolution.
My very first post was a thank you to Rusty's post for his comment about how he had noticed his Resolution setting had been changed from ppi to ppcm. I didn't say anything about printing. In fact, I never even stated what my issue was. I was merely thanking him for sharing information. So, for anyone to tell me that I didn't know what my issue is, that I didn't understand was quite laughable to me. And then the other two posters were almost equally ridiculous, who said that since they didn't experience the same conditions as myself and another person, it couldn't be a programming error.
Trust me, I understand explicitly about resolution, image size, dimensions, file size and how they are all interrelated. Resolution is essentially the density of pixels. (And I'm still used to dpi vs ppi, that's how long I've been working with the concept.) I often help other people understand in whichever mode is most comfortable for them to grasp the knowledge of how to know what size image they need/want to capture and print depending on the types of measurements shown on their equipment used and by whomever they might be working with for finish work.
I have a set process, I have set image sizes, I have an action recorded in Photoshop to shrink my images to 24" x 36" and save them in the proper folder with the proper name and another to shrink them to 8" x 12" and place them in the proper folder with the proper name. I am meticulous, so when the first image imported into Photoshop and it was 18.898" x 28.346", un-cropped, I couldn't figure it out. The file size was still just as large, the resolution was still 72, I hadn't changed any settings in Lightroom or Photoshop, the ONLY thing I had done was install an update. It didn't make sense to me that with the pixel dimensions still being the normal size, all of the sudden the inch dimensions were smaller. And I did need to be able to have the capability for a larger print size if/when I do want to print.
I hope that I'm being clear now. I really was just trying to post a thank you initially. I hadn't expected all of this excess.
I apologize for the troll statement. It wasn't meant for you directly, it was more for the grouping of comments which in my opinion didn't seem to be useful for the discussion and were instead just baiting. I shouldn't have allowed my bad mood to permeate my own comment regardless. I am also sorry for any other statements I made which might have come across wrong. I was trying to be funny with my first comment about programmers, but it might not have come across that way. I hadn't expected the rude and unnecessary comment back which I received, and that's where the trollish comments came from. That's why I only responded to that person once, despite the string of poking posts.

  • Why are the files I migrated over from a backup hard drive locked and inaccessible on my new used Mac Book pro? I used the migration assistant. Running Snow Leopard on a core duo.

My laptop got pinched and I bought a used Mac Book Pro, put a larger hard drive in it and performed a clean install of Snow Leopard on the new drive, after which I used the Migration Assistant to bring over my applications, settings, documents, etc., from my backup hard drive. This hard drivekis not a Ti e Machine drive, it's one I use to clone my computer to regularly with Carbon Copy Cloner. When the migration was complete all my documents, the desktop, and other folders are locked and won't allow me to access them. What to do? Thanks for the help.

No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

In 10.0.4, after clicking share, the files are transcoded im mp4 format.
But now in FCPX 10.0.6 - why are the files transcoded as .m4v instead of .mp4 ?
In both instances I selected Apple devices.
I noticed both the filesize are about the same.
But the latter took so much longer to transcode.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

Thanks Tom, this is great !
Btw, do you think whether there is any difference in the time taken by FCPX to transcode it to .m4v as against .mp4 ?

When I narrate my keynote presentation, why is the file size so huge?

Here are the steps so you can see all the files that make up your Keynote…
Go to the Finder and find your Keynote file and make sure that it has the .key extension on it. If it doesn't, click it and command i to view info and uncheck the box that says Hide Extension.
Delete the .key and change to .zip and then click the use .zip in the dialog box that comes up
Double click the new .zip file and it will change it to a folder
Open the folder there are the files
Close the folder and add .key to the end of the name and click Add in the dialog box (this will change it back to a Keynote file)
You might be able to do this and convert the voice narration to a smaller format.

  • Why does the file Name for file attached with Annotations "Attach File" (paperclip) become Unknown when Comments are Published?

Our company recently purchased Adobe Acrobat Pro XI for the purpose of using it for shared electronic reviews.  We are using Send for Shared Review created in Adobe Acrobat Pro XI, and all the Comment tools work as expectedexcept the paperclip in Annotations.
When a Word or Excel or Image(png, jpeg) file is attached using the Annotations paperclip, the initiator can initially see and open it. But after Publish Comments is selected and the review file is closed, the file "Name" changes to "Unknown" (although the Description has the correct file name and extension).  The Modified information is Unknown, as is the Size and Compressed Size.
When the review file is then re-opened, even the initiator cannot open the file, although:
The file location is marked with the paperclip within the document.
The file name is shown in the Comments List with the initiator's name.
In the Attachments list (the paperclip beneath the Thumbnails and Bookmarks) the Name appears as Unknown, Description shows the file name, Modified is Unknown, Size is Unknown, and Compressed Size is Unknown.
The file Name cannot be edited, although the file Description can be.
We have followed the procedure described in the tutorials but cannot figure out how to troubleshoot this situation.  Since this feature was the reason for the purchase of Adobe Acrobat Pro IX, we would any help. Please don't leave out any basics since we are all new users.
We have several people with Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and the rest have Adobe Reader XI and it is a Windows platform.  Can someone please give us some advice how to get this feature to work as described?

  • Disc Burner. Why are some files not readable or writeable?

    Hello,
I am trying to backup my friends computer files on a beige G3 (233 MHz). I am burning about 6 DVDs of AIF music files. Most of the files are about 30 - 40 Megs in size. Often I receive error messages on particular files that read:
"The operation cannot be completed because some data cannot be read or written.
    (Error code - 36)"
Followed by the choices: "Stop" or "Continue".
I have a bad feeling that my startup disk is too small but I am not sure.
Most of the files work fine. However some of the files cause disc burner to not be able to use them in the disc image before I burn. Why would this be?
    Here are the specifications:
Computer: beige G3 with two hard drives (one SCSI and one ATA hard drive) and a Pioneer DVR-110D DVD writer which is Apple supported (Apple system profiler indicates Apple supported on this DVD writer). My blank DVD disks are Sony Vermatim DVD-R (1 - 16x speed support). Although I think my beige G3 only writes them at about 2 or 4x.
I am using OS 10.1.5. My startup disk which has OS 10.1.5 in it is a 4 GIG SCSI disk. Is this big enough for a startup disk (for creating 4.5 GIG DVDs)? My files are on the second hard drive which is a 40 GIG ATA disk.
I have a bad feeling that my OSX startup drive is too small for disk burning - it is only 4 GIGs in total and OSX Disc burner (Disc copy) is first making a disk image on my startup volume before it burns it. Perhaps that disk image is too large for the startup volume. Is there any way I could ask OSX to put this disk image on the second larger hard drive instead (not the startup drive?).
Here is my process (I hope I am doing this right - I am new at this):
    1. I first insert a blank DVD-R
    2. A message pops up asking my if I would like to create a blank disc image for this disk (I think this is the typical Disk Copy utility window. I say "yes" and give it a name and choose the "DVD-R or DVD-RAM" option. (I am not sure if there are other important settings to choose here or better settings to use but I guessed the other options that seemed obvious. A blank disk image is created with an icon that looks like a DVD disk.
    3. Then I drag my chosen files to this blank disc image. It takes about 30 minutes to copy over. Thats when I receive the error message that some files couldn't be "read or written". The other files work fine but it would be nice if they all worked.
Why would some files not be readable or writeable?
    4. Then I choose file/burn in the top menu and the DVD is created. This takes another 20 - 30 minutes. At the very end of the process another message pops up saying:
"Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -28)" Followed by an "OK" button.
However all the files that made it onto the final DVD are fine - its just that its not all of the ones I originally chose in the first step when dragging to create the disk image.
Am I doing this the right way?
Why are some files not "readable or writeable" as it indicates in the error message?
Is my 4 GIG startup disk too small for this? or are the music files possibly corrupt? or could there be some other possible problem?
    Thanks

To follow up, I have some good news. After following your advice Kappy, it now works very well Thanks! Instead of using the 4 GIG volume for the OS, I am now using an 8 GIG partition on an 80 GIG drive. So now the OS has some room to operate. No disk errors occured on my first DVD
Now there was one problem. The second DVD burned gave me an error. I am not sure why but I am going to guess that because I had to installed the OS onto an 8 GIG partition maybe the OS needs to be rebooted in between disk burns because although 8 GIGs is certainly greater than the 4 GIGs I gave it last time, it still isn't a lot of space - maybe just enough to do one DVD at a time. Thats only a guess. So I rebooted to see if that clears the system out ready for the next DVD and I am trying to burn the second DVD again. If I remember I will report back. In any case, yes, this seems to be working. I hope this second DVD burns well too.
    Thanks Kappy

  • Why are the iPhotos not listed in the finder?

why are the iPhotos not listed in the finder?

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • File is huge when combined or changed to PDF, how do I get the file to a normal size to print?

Files are to large to print once they are PDF, how do I get them to a normal 8x11 size to print?

So why is it when I send these PDF files to clients they are to large for clients to print?
If I send a combined PDF file that is 3817KB, which a client has said is to large for them to print.
I send it to our office manager, she will print it, scan it back to me as a PDF, it will come
back as 375KB, the client can then print the file.
My question is, was/is there something I need to change in the process of scanning, combining files
to PDF that would create a smaller size file when done?

Sorry, I'm lost.First I thought this was about page size. But you say it isn't. You say it's about file size.  You've combined files of 494 + 441 = 935 KB, and you get 944 KB. This seems fine and you say it is fine. So what is the problem? Are you now on still a third meaning of huge, about size on screen?

. What version of OS X?
    10.6.8 - latest Snow Leopard.
. How are you determining the size of the Vault?
Using Finder: "Size 5.8 MB on disk".
. What exactly did you do that you describe as "I decided to set up a Vault to back up to the Time Machine external hard drive.".  In general, Time Machine should be on a drive dedicated to it (that is, with nothing else on it).
Oops, right: I meant Time Capsule. Time Machine is backing up to the Time Capsule, but I thought I could also use the Time Capsule as an external hard drive as well as a target for Time Machine. So, this is a non-no?
. How many images show up when you select "Photos" from near the top of the Library tab of the Inspector and filter using the Filter Rule "File Status" with the argument "Referenced"?

    2. No images. Aha. So, do this mean all the masters are in the iPhoto library?
    But, using Finder:
iPhoto Library: 18.2 GB 8,014 items
Aperture Library.aplibrary: 20.6 GB 7,945 which would be right: I did some deleting after importing from iPhoto
    Aperture Vault: 5.8 MB

Why are the colors for my calendar in iCal reseting to a color I never chose?  It won't stay blue when I choose that color and keeps changing to a custom lavendar color on its own....  Incredibly annoying...

There doesn't seem to be a one-size-fits-all answer, because what works for one printer doesn't necessarily work for another, and I don't have your printer so I can't advise on specifics...
However, perhaps we can discover a set of settings that will work...
If you File - Print, choose Photoshop Manages Colors, in the Printer Profile section do you see profiles specific to your printer (e.g., with the name Kodak in them)?
If so, choose one of them that seems appropriate given the paper you're using.
If not, try choosing sRGB IEC61966-2.1.
Now, before you continue, press the [Print Settings...] button.  This brings up the printer driver dialog.  You may have to go through [Advanced] buttons or whatever, but what you're looking to do here is to disable the printer driver's color management logic.  In other words, if you can find a color-management / ICC profile handling section, set it to "no color management" or equivalent.  OK back out to Photoshop's print dialog, then press [Print].
The key here is that if Photoshop manages the color transforms, the printer driver should not be set to do so - or vice versa.
If you're presented with the printer driver's dialog again, double check that the settings you chose above are still set, for good measure, and try a test print.

X423424X's question is pertinent too: you usually need to repair permissions after some major upgrade or update, not on a regular basis. Is there a particular reason why you'd often try to repair permissions? Here's more on the subject.
Repairing permissions after an update or upgrade is harmless, but I would question the need to do it even there. The Apple update itself should set the correct Permissions. I still do this, really as a hangover from Tiger days -- not certain it was really ever needed there either -- and because it's a habit that's hard to kick, but it's never found anything to repair...but for one buggy exception, which was the 10.5.8 Combo update. Running it once and then repairing Permissions created a real error. It was discovered the Combo needed to be run twice back to back and then Permissions repair. In fact, one would have been better off not running Permissions for that update to begin with. There it wasn't harnless.
