Why can't I kill db_stat at the command line?

Hi,
I have been running the db_stat utility on a couple of mid-size databases, however I do not seem to be able to kill the process with ctl+c, and was wondering why this is should be the case? For some reason this command, and the $ kill PID command seem to have no effect. I am running fedora core 4.

ctrl-c would not stop db_stat, but kill -9 <pid> should work.
You can always try a truss or the equivalent on your system
to check what is going on.
One thing to note is that recovery needs to be performed after
killing a process holding Berkeley DB locks. This is discussed at:

How can I start System Preferences from the command line?

Hello All,
I have an issue I'm not quite sure how to solve. I have been tasked within my business environment with tightening security on a Mac Leopard system and I've been granted Admin Rights to do this on a temporary basis.
The problem is as follows:
1) The original Sys Admin that set up this system is gone, no longer available.
2) He was a Dvorak Keyboard fan and set up the system for a Dvorak Keyboard.
3) The system actually has a standard Apple keyboard and is marked accordingly, i.e., qwerty (Most Users in the building have stopped using this system altogether - a terrible waste of a good system - even though some of their apps can be run normally (US style qwerty settings). The command line is useless, as is texteditor.app and a few others unless you know Dvorak layout)
5) When I open System Preferences, the Dvorak keyboard checkbox is grayed out and I cannot change it. There is no lock at the bottom of that particular screen for me to unlock.
6) Even though I select the US Keyboard at Login, and some apps work accordingly (like MatLab for example) the terminal is borderline useless. I spent over 2 hrs yesterday doing what should have been able to be done in about 30 minutes. I estimate a frustrating and mistake prone additional 8 to 10 hours to do what is normally a a 4 hour job at the command-line.
7) I do not have the time or desire to re-mark all the keys on the keyboard, particularly since it is not my call to do so, nor do I have the time to re-learn Dvorak touch-typing, and finally I do not want to re-load the entire system. I just want to change the darn keyboard to a standard qwerty keyboard that is somewhat useful in a terminal environment with vi, command line, etc. It's either that or I go mildly insane
This is frustrating as all get-out. The new Admin logged in and was able to uncheck his Dvorak settings (he is not a UNIX guy, nor is he comfortable om Macs), and we were hoping this was a system wide setting, but No. We re-booted the system, I logged in, still Dvorak, and the checkbox was still grayed out.
So I figure, short of re-loading the entre system and all the applications necesary, I can either start the Systems Preferences GUI using sudo and hopefully that will change system-wide settings, or I can delete the .AppleSetupDone file and resetup the system (if the keyboard settings are part of the setup) without spending a couple of days reloading everything and re-setting up users, networks, etc.
Needless to say, I am hoping for the easiest and quickest solution to this extremely frustrating and aggravating problem.

I would like to manage resource designates via the command line and
the "unires" command does not seem to have this function. Could I use
"uniadmrights"?

The uniadmrights command is not able to assign designate rights. You can assign
rights such as the ability to create and manage public and administration
groups. The "Resource administration" flag exists so far only on the
server side, and it is currently not used by the client. This is for future use.

There are two ways to assign a designate to a resource:

<LI>Log on as the resource via the client. There are only a few commands
available, one of them being the "Access Rights".

<LI>On the server side:

Edit the /users/unison/misc/resource.ini
file and create a new section to specify the resource designate.

Run the unires command as follows:

% unires -mod "R=resourcename" -s DES 10000

This sounds like a job for wget . You'll have to build and run it on Unix or Cygwin.
You could also build a test suite to do this in various testing tools. You could even write a short Perl or Groovy script to do this, or a slightly longer Java class.

Can the Mac Mail application be used from the OSX command line? Has anyone installed
a command-line, Linux-like mail application to run on OSX?

I don't know about the Mail app, but have you tried installing and configuring postfix? Here is a link to a blog with some details for a postfix solution.

Using the command line with DESKI to run a specific module in a report

I'm using BOXI R2 Desktop edition in a Windows Environment.
I have a report with a macro inserted in it which is composed of several sub-modules.
I know I can launch the report from the command line as follows: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\BUSINESS OBJECTS\BUSINESSOBJECTS\BUSOBJ.EXE" -user "USERID" -pass "PSWD" "Directory and Filename" -keyfile "Keyfilename" -nologo
What I want to know is can I launch the report from the command line and call a specific module. So if I have 5 modules in a single report, can I just call 1 from the command line?
How would that be formatted?

There's some more stuff to be done to correctly call external executables.
Read [When Runtime.exec() wont|http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-2000/jw-1229-traps.html], it shows some of the pitfalls of Runtime.exec().
Edit: there's also JRuby, which might be worth a try.

why can't I add text in the signature panel in firefox? I have adobe acrobat pro XI. I can open a pdf in acrobat pro and am able to add text to a pdf, but when I open a pdf in firefox, the "add text" option is not available.

When you install Acrobat XI you are also installing Reader for use in the browser. Reader is "sandboxed", or as it says in the Preferences, it is in "Protected Mode". Acrobat does not understand the concept of running in sandboxed memory (sandbox is a security feature to prevent the bad guy from exploiting a memory error and getting into a memory address where they can do damage to your computer) so to help protect Acrobat users the same way Reader users are protected we just install Reader along with Acrobat, but it is only used in the browser (part of this is because the bad guys use web sites as their primary method of distributing corrupted PDF files that can cause problems).
That said, because you are in Reader the file needs to be Reader Enabled prior to being posted to the web site (or opened in the browser). Once the file is Reader Enabled you should be able to add the text annotations.

There has never been a function to copy anything from an iPhone and paste it to a computer.
All of your media should be in iTunes already.
If it is not and was purchased from iTunes, right click on the device and select Transfer Purchases.
If the media is not in iTunes and was not purchased from iTunes, how did you get it on the device in the first place?

I think that's missing the point. I don't really want to rent any movies from Verizon but the whole reason for making rental available is to see if we like the movie first, before we purchase it...because if we purchase a movie that we have never seen before, we are stuck with it, even if we don't like the movie.
Not that long ago, I was looking to see if I could rent "The Big Chill" and even that is only available for purchase.
But still, Verizon is not getting an extra buck from me just to watch extra movies. I would much rather pay to watch a movie in the movie theater.
