Why do I have 200 GB of "backup" on my main hard drive?  Any how can I find and erase them?

I have a MBP that was recently subjected to some liquid damage and taken in for repair.  While it was being repaired, I purchased a second MBP.  My newest MBP is now my personal laptop, and I'm converting the old one over to a work laptop.  In that process, I've upgraded to Lion, and now I'm trying to free up as much hard drive space as possible.  I have already deleted all of the music, photos and videos from the hard drive.  However, when I go to see how much free space I have left, it shows that I have over 200 GB of "backups" on my main hard drive.
I have never created any backups on this drive.  I only used an external HD to do Time Machine backups.  How can I locate these backups and delete them in order to free up the hard drive space?

When you open FINDER, is there a folder titled 'backups?  If not, have to tried 'search' or 'spotlight' to locate 'backups?  By any chance is your disc partitioned?
You state that you have deleted all music, photos and videos from this drive.  The graphic that you included in your query shows that these are still on the disc.
The simplest way of achieving your desired result is to open Disk Utility and erase all user data.  However that does not tell us what 'backups' is.  Pure speculation on my part, but if the disc is partitioned, maybe that is how it is represented on the graphic.
Click on the HDD on your desk top using Command 'I' and see if available space correlates with the the above graphic.  If not this suggest a software issue.
If it does, you have to locate 'backups'.  As alluded to previously, try SEARCH and SPOTLIGHT.  200GB is hard to hide.  Another technique is to open finder and press COMMAND 'J'.  Click on 'size' and 'calculate all sizes'.  If one of those files is over 200 GB, you have located your culprit.
Better yet wait for someone who knows exactly what the problem is and will give a simple answer.  I admit I'm grasping at straws here, but maybe I've at least given a bit of a starting point.  Good luck.
Ciao.

  • I have a new HP Paviilion g7. 500GM hard drive. How can it be that I have used 439.68 of it already

When I look at installed software programs it shows only 4.03GB total.
How can I find out what could be using all my storage capacity?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
I see that you're having an issue finding out what is using all your storage capacity. You can go to the C drive and look what's in the program files.
This will show you what has been saved and being used.
Could you upload a screen shot of the space you have left and what you're looking at?
Also, Could you also give me the full model name and number of the notebook you have?
I look forward to your response.

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

after some sorting out your article, I clicked on a question mark with the message find the missing folder.  This brought me to a page where I could choose a folder by year and click on it.  The question marks disappeared and the photos were available.  In some cases I had to click on the year folder for each subfolder by date.
The find missing folders message did not bring me to the finder window in which I could click on folders in the hard drive itself.  I appreciate your help big time!!

I have a pc running vista and the hard drive crashed how can i transfer my songs from Ipod nano 5th gen to my new hard drive and into itunes

Right click on your device in the device list and choose "transfer purchses" to copy all music bought in iTunes to your new iTunes library.
For all other media you'll have to use 3rd party software, examples are mentioned in this thread:

You need to first install the OS your Mac came on the bundled gray disks. Assuming it's Snow Leopard, you could then login into the App Store using your same Apple ID and password to download and install Lion.
If your Mac is a bit older and came with Leopard, 10.5.x, you can bypass that and install Snow Leopard from your retail disk. The only software you'd need to install separately from the gray disks would be the optional software, such as the iLife suite and other titles not included on the retail SL disk.

I have one folder on my desktop, i want to copy it on external hard drive so how can i do this?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Connect the external drive and open a Finder window pressing the Finder icon in Dock. Then, drag the folder to Finder, so it will be copied to this external disk.
If you can't copy this folder, probably you have to format the external disk or use an app that allows you to write in that external drive. Mac OS X can't write in NTFS external disks

  • How to stop iTunes creating a new library on my hard drive when it can't find the one I have created and told it to use on an external drive?

I have quite alot of music etc so to save hard drive space I have created my iTunes library on an external hard drive. If I ever accidentaly open iTunes when that external hard drive isn't attached iTunes makes a whole new library from scratch on my computers hard drive. I find this highly frustrating as I often open Itunes to find no music as it have changed librarys and I have to re-load my actual library: very frustraiting and time consuming.
I would like to know if it is possible to lock iTunes some how to stop it from changing folders when it can'f find the library, or atleast give me a warning that it can't find the library before creating a whole new one????

Tunes works through a database file which has a list of your tracks.  When you click on a track it looks up in the database which file it needs to play, then plays the file.  If something breaks this link then you get !  The two main ways to get ! are to move a file from where iTunes expects it to be, or to delete it altogether.  I don't know which has happened in your case.  You can try using Spotlight to find a file for the one referred to in a broken link.  If the files have been moved then they need to be moved back.  If they were deleted completely you will have to restore them from a backup or download them again from the iTunes Store and rebuild your library.

  • I have installed a lacie porsche design 1tb external hard drive but how do I move things onto it so my mac speeds up

Hi Can anyone help? My Imac (about late 2008) was running very slow and I realised I had very little memory left on it so I was advised by the online chat buddy at Apple to buy an external hard drive. I have bought a lacie porsche design 1tb external hard drive which is great but how do I transfer things on to it so my computer works faster. I woudl imagine the buggest files I have are both photos and music (all bought form itunes).
Any help would be very much appreciated?
    Thanks

How much free drive space is there? Right click on the Macintosh HD folder (or however you may have renamed it) and select Get Info.
The OS needs around 10 GB for its operation, but not all of that room is necessarily always needed. Depending on how close you get to the edge, creating more free space won't necessarily do anything to speed things up. It can certainy happen, but it's mostly a myth that low drive free space is a cause of slowdowns. This applies especially to zombie suggestions you may often see here to clear a certain minimum percentage of the drive out.
My recommendation would be to keep 10 GB free, plus room for anticipated expansion of your own files. So a ballpark might be at around 20-25 GB, but your mileage may vary, depending on how you use the computer.
If you have at least 10 GB free, then I'd say low drive space isn't causing your performance issue. Of course, moving things out isn't necessarily a bad idea either, if it's really needed--but you do realize that whatever you move out to an external drive will need to be backed up as well.
First backup everything, as this may be a symptom of a failing hard drive. This won't exhaust all the possibilities for the causes of the slow downs, but here are some things to start with: Open Disk Utility and select the drive, not the startup volume. What does it say for SMART Status, verified or not? You can better check to health of the drive with the demo of SMART Utility.
Next, open Activity Monitor. It's in the Applications folder inside the Utilities sub-folder of the main Hard Drive folder ("Macintosh HD", unless you have renamed it.) Go to the System Memory tab and take a screenshot of the bottom section only. (Screenshot is Cmd-Shift-4.) To insert it into your post use the camera icon above. Being low on RAM/memory can cause these kinds of symptoms. Like this:
In addition, see if there's any process or application consuming an inordinate amount of CPU. How much CPU is idle?

This is what the inside of an iPhoto 6 library looks like:
Where in there did you look for the image files?
Did you run any updaters pror to discovering the missing photos?  What fixes have you tried?  Do you have a backup of the library on another hard drive?

  • HT204088 My daughters have Itunes accounts that are connected to my credit card.  I continue to have charges, but both daughters insist that are not downloading.  How can I find out which account is being billed on my credit card?

I am trying to find out which one of my daughters is buying music through I tunes and is posting to my credit card.  How can I find this out.  I have the transaction numbers from my credit card.

If they have separate iTunes accounts then you can check each account on your computer's iTunes : log into an account on your computer's iTunes via the Store > View Account menu option, and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it. Click on that and you should then see a list of its purchases.
If they share the same account then you can't tell, the purchase history doesn't show the device or computer that a purchase was made on.

  • I have iPhoto 11 on my macbook. I want to export photos to another iPhoto library on an external hard drive. How can I do this.

I have run out of space on my internal hard drive on my macbook and I want to create another iPhoto library on an external hard drive using most of the photographs already on the hard drive.
I did this easily on an old G4 mac and an old version of iphoto. I simply imported the photographs from the library already on the hard drive to the new library I created on the external hard drive.
It does not seem to be possible to do the same thing using iPhoto 11.
I have no idea where to find the files on the mac to do it the more direct way by just importing the files.
    Any ideas?

Here's one way to do what you want:
    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them:  Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    3. On the Internal Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
    A couple of comments:
    a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.
c: Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager
