Why does my mac go to sleep every 30 minutes?

When watching a film my mac logs off after every 30 minutes. I have checked my energy saver preferences and moved everything to never sleep and unchecked 'put hard disks to sleep when possible' but still it sleeps after 30 minutes of non-use.
Is there something i'm missing?

From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Advanced... ▹ Log out after … minutes of inactivity: Off
If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, you may need to click it to unlock the settings. Enter your login password when prompted.
These instructions apply to OS X 10.7 or later. If you're running an older version of OS X, the preference pane may have a different name.

  • Why does my mac try to wake every two hours when I have put it to sleep?

A question for a newbie, so please forgive me if theres not enough detail. I notice from the Console log that my mac tried to wake every two hours when I put it into sleep mode yesterday evening. The log records the following message "mac error 09/09/2013 02:21:05.000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: RTC (Alarm)" The machine then spends a few minutes logging other activity before returning to inactive mode until the next 2-hour cycle time comes around. Should I be worried about this, or is it a normal Mountain Lion inbuilt routine. If so what's its purpose, and why at 2 hourly intervals?

System Preferences/Energy Saver - check to make sure Wake for network access isn't checked.
If that doesn't fix it, see this discussion for the post by Linc Davis.

  • When Firefox in minimized and I'm working with another program, why does it automatically maximize (pop up) every 10 minutes?

I'm using Windows 7 and Firefox 8.0.1 on a PC. This is frustrating. I like Firefox, but it keeps popping up every 10 minutes when it's minimized and I'm working in another program. I can't continue to use it if this can't be fixed. I just switched from 3.6 and never had any problems. Also, no settings have been changed.

Great suggestion! It looks like one problem has been solved. I started Firefox in safe mode and the problem didn't occur. Then I restarted in regular mode and individually disabled one add-on at a time. What I found is that with Better Privacy disabled, the pop-up no longer occurred. So step one, identifying the source of the problem, is complete. Now onto step two, finding out what setting in Better Privacy is causing the problem. There's nothing that stands out to me as the culprit. Any ideas? Thanks again!

  • Why does my mac go to sleep and not wake up?

    I have a 24-inch, Early 2009 imac - Processor  3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - Lion OS
I used to be able to leave the machine on, it'd fall asleep and I'd awake it by touching the keypad or mouse.  Now the machine goes to sleep and I can no longe awaken it.  I press the power button in the back and display turns on but no mouse.
    Any ideas???
    Stuck in NH.....

    G B-D,
A cluster of recent occurrences suggests that it might be a software/firmware issue. (Have you performed a firmware update recently?) However, if it were my computer, I'd want to make sure it's 100% before your window period ends.
First, I'd try fixing the problem with the list of suggestions from the attached link. This includes every solution I've found relative to this issue.
Second, I'd document the problem. That way you can determine then it happens, under what conditions, and how you can avoid it. For example, using a key sequences like CMD-Option-Eject should safely sleep your computer, hopefully avoiding the problem you note. Other users say that rebooting several times in a row clears thing up.
Third, once you have your documentation, and you done several things, and there's no solution, you might think about visiting your Apple Store; it's a lot easier to carry around a MacBook, but I'm not sure what your options are.
