Why does VISA write vi get a clock symbol added?

In an application, I was using the older serial I/O primitive vi's, and now that I've switched to LV 7.1, I wanted to change the older serial read and write (worked fine) vi's (not VISAs) to the VISA Read and Write. When I place a VISA write on the block diagram, it adds a little clock symbol at the upper right corner that was not on the templates.
What is this clock symbol doing there, when it wasn't on the functions panel version of the VISA write vi?
Having a lot of problems getting the VISA read and write vi's to work; they seem to be far more tricky than the old primitive serial read and write vi's.
All my VISA read vi's are getting errors, and some of them cause a severe slowdown on execution with those er
rors. Thoughts on debugging these problemsome VISA vi's. (These problems are why I used the primitive serial read and write vi's in the first place.. couldn't get the VISA vis to work.)
Thx.

The little clock symbol means to do I/O asynchronously. If you right click on the function, you'll see the option to do it synchronously. Select that and the clock will disappear.
What exactly are the errors that you're getting? One thing to try is to disable termination character detection with VISA Configure Serial Port and use VISA Bytes at Serial Port to determine how many bytes to read. If you have enabled the termination character and specify too many bytes to read, you'll get an error because VISA Read will timeout waiting for the termination character to be detected.

  • Why does visa write hang with Labview 2009 instrument drivers.

    I'm having an issue with a code package that I'm running. The pacakge is very complex and was written by someone other than me. It runs fine while using the labview 8.5 drivers, however, when the 2009 instrument drivers are install there is a visa write call to an instrument where the software will hang up at the VISA write VI. I tried setting the timeout attribute but that makes no difference. I would expect that if the visa write did not work, that it would time out with an error instead of hanging up.
    Some additional information. The instrument is an EPM which is on a GPIB bus with other instruments. When I place the EPM2000 on a serparate bus this problem goes away, but I want to be able to operate on the same GPIB bus.
    Has anyone experienced a similar problem? What can I try to help troubleshoot the problem. I tried opening NI Spy but that shows no activity going on.

    Hi Steve,
    My apologies, when you said instrument drivers I assumed you were refering to the individual drivers for your instrument.  Were you refering to the VISA drivers?  If so, the latest version of these is 5.1.1 which can be downloaded here: http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/2659/lang/en.
    Also are you able to communicate with this device using the test panels in Measurement & Automation Explorer?  There is also a tool called NI IO Trace (or it may still be called NI-SPY in 2009) that can be opened from MAX that monitors all GPIB commands sent and received on the machine.  Getting a log of the commands when the hang occurs may help to diagnose it.
    It is possible this issue could be caused by opening and closing the VISA reference frequently in the code such as in a loop iteration.  Is this is case in your code?

  • Why does my macbook pro get hot

    Why does my Macbook pro get hot while I am only on my email account?  This is a recent change.  It gets too hot too put in my lap.  Is it a battery issue.

    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Why does DataOutputStream write Boolean as 1 Byte?

    Im trying to conserve space in a file storing booleans.
    why does dataoutputstream write booleans as a byte?
    is there a way to write a bit only?
    thanks!

    Hi,
    A boolean does even allocate at least 8 bits when it is declared in the code.
    From the VM spec:
    "3.2.4 There Is No boolean Type
    Although Java defines a boolean type, the Java Virtual Machine does not
    have instructions dedicated to operations on boolean values. Instead, a
    Java expression that operates on boolean values is compiled to use the int
    data type to represent boolean variables.
    Although the Java Virtual Machine has support for the creation of arrays of
    type boolean (see the description of the newarray instruction), it does not
    have dedicated support for accessing and modifying elements of boolean
    arrays. Arrays of type boolean are accessed and modified using the byte
    array instructions.1
    For more information on the treatment of boolean values in the Java Virtual
    Machine, see Chapter 7, "Compiling for the Java Virtual Machine.""http://java.sun.com/docs/books/vmspec/html/Overview.doc.html#22909

  • Why does my form data gets cleared out when clicking on the back button.

    Can someone explain why does my form selections get cleared out when clicking on the back button.
    I have a JSP page that displays a form with some selections and text boxes. I populate the page and submit the request. The action on the submit call another jsp page, which processes the data and displays the results via a <jsp:include> statement which calls the results page. When clicking on the back button from the results page, it returns me to the form page, but the selections are cleared out.
    1. Is there something in my calling of the pages that causes this behavior and can I prevent it?
    I notice that the behavior is different when using the IE 6.0 version Netscape 7.1. IE clears the page Netscape 7.1 retains the settings.
    If I cannot prevent this behavior does that mean I will have to save the state of the form data. And if I have to save the form data, what would be the easiest method of doing this. I'm a beginner to JSP and Java, but have some ASP experience. I don't understand why the back button in a JSP request clears the form data but a regular HTML page does not can someone explain?
    THANKS.

    the browser doesn't have to remember what you submitted and fill that back in.
    you can't prevent it unless you can ensure a new request to the server in which you can fill the default values in there.

    some thing is runnng in the back ground. Or your email is struck. Deleted all emails and reboot phone and add them one by one. Or your sim cards has problem. Replace sim card. If nothing works drain battery then recharge battery to 100% full charge.

    You can find out what processes are loading your system by running Application Monitor (in Launchpad > Utilities if you're running Lion or Launchpad > Other under Mountain Lion). Select "All Processes". Sort the display by CPU% (click on the label of that column). What processes show over 10% CPU?
    Also, when you click on the CPU button on the lower bar, what shows as your % idle? (Mine is showing about 98% just reading and posting here.)
    If no process is causing the heat, you could have a hardware problem.

  • Battery life suddenly decreased and consistently getting the "clock" symbol for up to 10 or more minutes at a time !

    I recently noticed a dramatic decrease in my Blackberry Curve 9300's battery life. Several days ago, it went from lasting all day to only lasting a few hours. I have also noticed that I get the "clock" symbol appearing on the screen even if I'm not using the phone --- and it stays on the screen for up to 10 minutes or more at a time ! I will look at the phone to get the time and I see that it hasn't updated for 10-15 minutes and the clock symbol is running the entire time. When it finally does disappear, the phone seems to work like it always has ---- but I'm worried that I've either picked up a virus or have somehow activated something that is draining my battery and memory resources rapidly. Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated ! P.S.. I'm a relatively new Blackberry user --- switched from iPhone about 6 months ago......so still learning about how the device works and how to troubleshoot ! THANKS !
    p.s.  I have looked to see if any apps are running in the background and found nothing out of the ordinary.

    Hi CollinGCC78,
    It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If you are still having issues, you may want to double-check the steps outlined in the following article, in order if possible (apologies for replicating any steps you have already taken):

  • Why does URLStream complete event get dispatched when the file is not finished loading?

    I'm writing an AIR kiosk app that every night connects to a WordPress server, gets a JSON file with paths to all the content, and then downloads that content and saves it to the kiosk hard drive.
    There's several hundred files (jpg, png, f4v, xml) and most of them download/save with no problems.  However, there are two f4v files that never get downloaded completely.  The complete event does get dispatched, but if I compare the bytesTotal (from the progress event) vs bytesAvailable (from the complete event) they don't match up; bytesTotal is larger.  The bytesTotal (from the progress event) matches the bytes on the server.
    The bytesLoaded in the progress event never increases to the point that it matches the bytesTotal so I can't rely on the progress event either.  This seems to happen on the same two videos every time. The videos are not very large, one is 13MB and the other is 46MB.  I have larger videos that download without any problems.
    [edit] After rebooting the compter, the two videos that were failing now download correctly, and now it's a 300kb png file that is not downloading completely.  I'm only getting 312889 of 314349 bytes.
    If I paste the url into Firefox it downloads correctly, so it appears to be a problem with Flash/AIR.
    [edit] I just wrote a quick C# app to download the file and it works as expected, so it's definitely a problem with Flash/AIR.
    Here's the code I'm using:
    package  {
        import flash.display.Sprite;
        import flash.events.Event;
        import flash.events.ProgressEvent;
        import flash.net.URLRequest;
        import flash.net.URLStream;
        [SWF(backgroundColor="#000000", frameRate="24", width="640", height="480")]
        public class Test extends Sprite {
            private var fileSize:Number;
            private var stream : URLStream;
            private var url:String = "http://192.168.150.219/wordpress2/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/John-Butler-clip1.f4v";
            public function Test() {
                if (stage)
                    init();
                else
                    this.addEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE, init);
            private function init(e:Event=null):void {
                this.removeEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE, init);
                stream = new URLStream();
                stream.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, onLoadProgress);
                stream.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onLoadComplete);
                stream.load(new URLRequest(url));
            private function onLoadProgress(event:ProgressEvent):void {
                fileSize = event.bytesTotal;
                var percent:Number = event.bytesLoaded / event.bytesTotal * 100;
                trace(percent + "%");
            private function onLoadComplete(event:Event):void {
                trace("loaded", stream.bytesAvailable, "of", fileSize);
                // outputs "loaded 13182905 of 13184365"
                // so why is it "complete" when it isn't finished downloading?

    Thanks for your quick reply !
    I am relatively new to programming so please bear with me on this as I still haven't managed to grasp some of those things that "make perfect sense". If I am setting mouseEnabled to false doesn't that mean that the object no longer gets MouseEvents ?
    If I have understood you correctly then once the mouseEnabled is set to false the btn object is removed from the objects recognizable by the mouse - hence dispatching a mouseout event (and I am guessing here) from the mouse?
    I still don't get it though, if the listeners are set to the object and the object is no longer accessible to the mouse why is the event still being dispatched ?
    I get it that the making of the object unavailable to the mouse causes the "removing" (deactivating) of the object from under the mouse,
      step 1. deactivate object, and  step 2. (as a result of step 1) register the removal of the object.
    but why is the mouse still listening after step 1?
    Even if the action is that of "out" (as in the object is no longer under the mouse) it still is an action isn't it ? so haven't we turned off the listening for actions ?
    I promise I am not trying to drive you crazy here, this is just one of those things that I really want to get to the root of !
    Thanks,
