Why : Exception in thread

Hi guys again it's me;
Rushing up for a project is really not good(especially for a beginner). I have this program which indicates a person's travel diary randomly. the program that I write should indicate normally;
House : frequence 2
SportsCentre : frequence 3
and so on...
The problem is there is a
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
everytime I execute it. Only some random times, it gets to show a line or two.
I blinded sitting in front of the comp for so long, so I'm really hoping someone could explain the error to me. Here are the codes;
import java.util.Random;
Deplacement class
public class Deplacement
     /**listing of all the places the cadre(executive) can go
     private final int location;
          public final static int house   = 1;
          public final static int company = 2;
          public final static int sportscentre = 3;
          public final static int restaurant  = 4;
          public final static int restouniv  = 5;
          public final static int ASSEDIC   = 6;
          public final static int school = 7;
     public Deplacement(int location, int freq)
             assert isValidLocation(location);
             this.location = location;
     public int getLocation()
        return location;
     public static int getRandom(int start, int end) //generates random between 2 numbers
          Random f = new Random();
          int frequence = f.nextInt(end - start + 1) + start;
          return frequence;
     public static boolean isValidLocation(int location) {
        return house <= location && location <= school;
     public static String locationToString(int location)
              switch (location)
              case house: return "House";
              case company: return "Company";
              case sportscentre: return "Sports Centre";
              case restaurant: return "Restaurant";
              case restouniv: return "Resto-U";
              case ASSEDIC: return "ASSEDIC";
              case school: return "School";
               return null;
         }Table class
public class Table
     public static int numLocation = 7;
    public static int numFrequence = 11;
    private Deplacement[][] table;
    public Table()
        table = new Deplacement[numLocation][numFrequence];
        for (int location = Deplacement.house;
             location <= Deplacement.school; location++)
           int frequence = 1;
           table [location-1][Deplacement.getRandom(0, 10)] = new Deplacement(location, frequence);
    public Deplacement getDeplacement(int location, int frequence)
        return table [location-1][frequence];
}Simulate class
public class Simulate
     private static final int frequence = 0;
     public static void main(String[] args)
        Table table = new Table();
        for (int location = Deplacement.house; location <= Deplacement.school; location++)
                Deplacement simulate = table.getDeplacement(location, frequence);
                System.out.printf("%s : frquence %d \n", simulate.locationToString(simulate.getLocation()),(simulate.getRandom(0, 10)));  // <--exception is generated here
}Really hoping you guys could paste this in, and tell me voila here the error. I don't understand why the exception is generated. Been looking at it for 2hours. Please help.

System.out.printf("%s : frquence %d \n",simulate.locationToString(simulate.getLocation()),(sim
ulate.getRandom(0, 10))); // <--exception is
generated here
Ok, so simulate is null, and you're trying to invoke
methods(locationToString, getLocation, and getRandom)
on a null object reference, which is illegal of
course.
Deplacement simulate =table.getDeplacement(location, frequence);
getDeplacement must sometimes return null depending
on what data you pass it. Check it!
if (simulate == null)
System.out.println("OOPS! I'd better fix this!");
else
System.out.println("%s : frquence .........
}I took care of the exception in Class Simulate. SO it looks like this.
public class Simulate
     private static final int frequence = 0;
     public static void main(String[] args)
        Table table = new Table();
        for (int location = Deplacement.house; location <= Deplacement.school; location++)
               try
                    Deplacement simulate = table.getDeplacement(location, frequence);
                   System.out.printf("%s : frquence %d \n",
                             simulate.locationToString(simulate.getLocation()),(simulate.getRandom(0, 10)));
               catch (java.lang.NullPointerException npe)
                    System.out.println("WHY");
    }Sample results...
WHY
WHY
Sports Centre : frquence 4
WHY
WHY

WHY
I'm sorry, but I might not get the idea. How can getDeplacement(location, frequence) egals null when I actually have all the locations from 1-7(house to school) and a frequence that can take only int from 0-10? I suspect the random method that returned a null frequence but how is that possible? Can anybody help? Thank you.

    So the problem is given by these two lines, of the Swing-X library:
    AutoCompleteDecorator.decorate(expField, exps, false);
    AutoCompleteDecorator.decorate(defField, exps, false);
    However, the functionality intended from them is given. The problem now seems to do with expField.setText() and expField.selectAll(). I've inline initialized expField, and now it works.

    ...yes, i c one problem, i need to add
    implements ActionListenerActually no, since you're implementing the ActionListener as an anonymous
    inner class. Tester isn't your ActionListener in this case. In fact
    this is why you're getting "Tester should be declared abstract" error.
    k,
    i did that, but now... here is the error i am
    getting,
    what i dont get is:
    1. i DID define actionPerformed as an inner classYes, that's all well and good.
    2. in my constructor, am i loading too much into
    it???I like to keep my constructors rather simple, so I would've made an
    init method of some sort where I load the gui. But, this seems more like
    a question of taste (or does it? anyone?).
    3. i really dont understand what i've done wrong...
    could someone explain it? and do i need to put
    actionperformed definition in my constructor? i mean,
    if a person is just pressing all the items in the menu
    bar... to see whats there, that mean each time my
    actionPerformed may get fired... so DO I or DO I NOT
    want actionPerformed defined in my constructor??? Just remove the implements ActionListener from the Tester class,
    then move theprintItem = fileMenu.add("Print");before printItem.addActionListener(blah, blah);That should get at least some of the errors away (or possibly cause new ones).
    EWE.....what a web we weave when we practice OO
    concepts
    C:\jLotto\Tester.java:12: Tester should be declared
    abstract; it does not define
    actionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent) in Tester

    That is great! Thanks. I've got two question though.
    1.) Now I want to have 100 bouncing balls. Is the best way to achieve this is through an array of GOvals? I haven't gotten to the lecture on arrays on Stanford's ITunesU site yet so I am not sure what is possible with what I know now.An array would work, or a List. But it doesn't matter much in this case.
    2.) Are references being passed by value only applicable to Java or is that common to object-oriented programming? Also is there a way to force Java to pass in "BallA" instead of the value "null"?I can't say about all OO languages as a whole, but at least C++ can pass by reference.
    And no, there's no way to pass a reference to the BallA variable, so the method would initialize it and it wouldn't be null anymore.
    When you call the method with your BallA variable, the value of the variable is examined and it's passed to the method. So you can't pass the name of a variable where you'd want to store some object you created in the method.
    But you don't need to either, so there's no harm done.

  • HELP Needed with this error:   Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClass

    Folks,
    I am having a problem connecting to my MSDE SQL 2000 DB on a WindowsXP pro. environment. I am learning Java and writing a small test prgm to connect the the database. The code compiles ok, but when I try to execute it i keep getting this error:
    "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Test1"
    I am using the Microsoft jdbc driver and my CLASSPATH is setup correctly, I've also noticed that several people have complained about this error, but have not seen any solutions....can someone help ?
    Here is the one of the test programs that I am using:
    import java.sql.*;
    * Microsoft SQL Server JDBC test program
    public class Test1 {
    public Test1() throws Exception {
    // Get connection
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new
    com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver());
    Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection(
    "jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://LAPTOP01:1433","sa","sqladmin");
    if (connection != null) {
    System.out.println();
    System.out.println("Successfully connected");
    System.out.println();
    // Meta data
    DatabaseMetaData meta = connection.getMetaData();
    System.out.println("\nDriver Information");
    System.out.println("Driver Name: "
    + meta.getDriverName());
    System.out.println("Driver Version: "
    + meta.getDriverVersion());
    System.out.println("\nDatabase Information ");
    System.out.println("Database Name: "
    + meta.getDatabaseProductName());
    System.out.println("Database Version: "+
    meta.getDatabaseProductVersion());
    } // Test
    public static void main (String args[]) throws Exception {
    Test1 test = new Test1();

    I want to say that there was nothing wrong
    with my classpath config., I am still not sure why
    that didn't work, there is what I did to resolved
    this issue.You can say that all you like but if you are getting NoClassDefFound errors, that's because the class associated with the error is not in your classpath.
    (For future reference: you will find it easier to solve problems if you assume that the problem is your fault, instead of trying to blame something else. It almost always is your fault -- at least that's been my experience.)
    1. I had to set my DB connection protocol to TCP/IP
    (this was not the default), this was done by running
    the
    file "svrnetcn.exe" and then in the SQL Server Network
    Utility window, enable TCP/IP and set the port to
    1433.Irrelevant to the classpath problem.
    2. I then copied all three of the Microsoft JDBC
    driver files to the ..\jre\lib\ext dir of my jdk
    installed dir.The classpath always includes all jar files in this directory. That's why doing that fixed your problem. My bet is that you didn't have the jar file containing the driver in your classpath before, you just had the directory containing that jar file.
    3. Updated my OS path to located these files
    and....BINGO! (that simple)Unnecessary for solving classpath problems.
    4. Took a crash course on JDBC & basic Java and now I
    have created my database, all tables, scripts,
    stored procedures and can read/write and do all kinds
    of neat stuff.All's well that ends well. After a few months you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.

    I'm assuming you're using JWSDP 1.6 as I see Fastinfoset.jar in your list. You are missing some jar files in your classpath there. The best way to know what you need is to look at the release notes for JWSDP 1.6. Since you're building a web serivce start with the table in there and lookup JAX-RPC. It'll show you what jar files are needed and what other libraries are needed. Now depending on what you're doing you don't really need all those.
    For sure you're missing jsr173_api.jar which is where I believe that class you need is located. This is in the JWSDP_1_6\sjsxp\lib directory. You will probably need the other jar thats in there too. Best bet is to follow the dependancy chart in the release notes.
    This should get you going.

    The class the error message is referring to is defined with a SWC that my project links to. However, I've even tried to define a class with that same name (and location) within my project and it still fails to find it.
    Why am I able to Project->Clean and run this project within the desktop AIR player (or on the device in debug mode) but unable to export it as a release build?
    I have found a couple of threads mentioning a similar error but none of them have been marked as resolved.

    At this point I feel I am talking to myself, but I will share my work-around in case it helps another who may stumble across this post.
    In my particular case, both my main AIR application and my ANE wrapper library were referencing the same external Flex library (same revision). Both projects had the library linkage set to merge. Changing the linkage to "External" on one of the 2 libraries (it doesn't seem to matter which) and leaving the other as "Merged into code" enabled the export to complete without the bizarre "Unable to find named traits" error.

  • Why are the threads start and terminate randomly?

    Hi there,
    I got the program below. I am wondering why are the threads start and terminate randomly? Everytime, I run the program, it produces different results.
    I know that these four threads have got same normal priority (should be 5), and under windows there is something called timeslice. Then these four threads rotate using this timeslice. How do we know what exactly the timeslice is in seconds? If the timeslice is fix, then why the results are ramdom?
    Thanks in advance!

    t.start();
    public void run() {
    try {
    System.out.println("Thread: " + tName);
    Thread.sleep(2000);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    System.out.println("Exception: Thread "
    + tName + " interrupted");
    System.out.println("Terminating thread: " + tName);
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    // Why are the threads start and terminate randomly?
    new MyThreadOne("1");
    new MyThreadOne("2");
    new MyThreadOne("3");
    new MyThreadOne("4");
    try {
    Thread.sleep(10000);
    // Thread.sleep(2000);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    System.out.println(
    "Exception: Thread main interrupted.");
    System.out.println(
    "Terminating thread: main thread.");
    1. Firstly, I set in the main function:
    Thread.sleep(10000);
    and I run the program it gives:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 4
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 10 seconds)
    Run it again, it gives:
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 4
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 10 seconds)
    And my question was why it outputs like this? It suppose to be:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 10 seconds)
    Why these four threads start and finish randomly each time I run the program? I use Windows, suppose there is a timeslice (i.e. 1 second), these threads have the same priority. Then the threads should start and finish in turn one by one. Am I right?
    2. My second question is:
    When I change the codes in the 'main' function into:
    Thread.sleep(10000); -> Thread.sleep(2000);
    it gives me the results like:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 4
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 2
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 2
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)
    Run it again:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 1
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)
    I tried several times. The main thread always terminates before or after the first child thread finished.
    My question is why it doesn't output something like:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    Terminating thread: 1
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)
    or
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)

    Yes, my machine has multi-core. Then you mean that if I got a one core machine the result should always be:

    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 10 seconds)
    ???No.

    How to explain my second quesiton then? Why the main thread always terminates before some of the child threads end? Thanks a lot.

  • Error after compile Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundErr

    Hi I am very new to Java programming, right now I am using a mac os 10.49
    I can create java documents using bbedit and then they compile when i type
    javac.
    But when i type java *.java I get the following error
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
    If I type java "filename"
    without the .java at the end of the file the terminal has no response
    I understand i am supposed to some how set the classpath but i do not know how to do this
    Also I can create and compile and then run my java in the eclipse program that i have installed, but not from terminal and im not sure why.
    Thanks for the help.

    I understand i am supposed to some how set the classpath but i do not know how
    to do thisThere is no need to set a system variable CLASSPATH, it is inflexible to do so, and it can lead to unpredictable behaviour.
    You should be able to compile and run programs from the command line, specifying the classpath as part of the commands you use.
    (1) For instance, you can create a file HelloWorld.java with the following contents:public class HelloWorld {
        public static void main(String args[]) {
            System.out.println("Hello world");
    }(2) From the command line (console) navigate to the folder (directory) containing this file and compile it with the commandjavac -cp . HelloWorld.javaThe "-cp ." part is what specifies the classpath. Note that it is a file that is being compiled so we specify the actual file name including the extension. At this point you should be able to check that the HelloWorld.class file has been created.
    (3) From the same folder (directory) you run the program withjava -cp . HelloWorldThe classpath is being specified in the same way as before. It is a class that is being invoked, so we don't specify a filename. (much less use wildcards like *).
    Documentation for the java and javac tools (and others) are linked to from this page: http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/index.html

  • Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Emp/class

    Dear all,
    It occur 'Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Emp/class' error when I test a oracle java sample.I've already SET CLASSPATH=C:\ORACLE\JDBC\LIB\CLASSE~1.ZIP.
    following is the source code:
    import java.sql.*;
    class Emp
    public static void main (String args [])
    throws SQLException
    // Load the Oracle JDBC driver
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    // Connect to the database
    // You must put a database name after the @ sign in the connection URL.
    // You can use either the fully specified SQL*net syntax or a short cut
    // syntax as <host>:<port>:<sid>. The example uses the short cut syntax.
    Connection conn =
    DriverManager.getConnection ("jdbc:oracle:oci8:@localhost:1521:orcl",
                        "scott", "tiger");
    // Create a Statement
    Statement stmt = conn.createStatement ();
    // Select the ENAME column from the EMP table
    ResultSet rset = stmt.executeQuery ("select ENAME from EMP");
    // Iterate through the result and print the employee names
    while (rset.next ())
    System.out.println (rset.getString (1));
    Can you tell me what should also be set in classpath?
    thanks in advance.

    You are right, the program is absolutely correct and I've run it before.but why set PATH=%PATH%;C:\ORACLE\JDBC\LIB\CLASSE~1.ZIP?I don't think it is correct.
    I've ever run this jdbc program before and remeber only set classpath(path is also be set only for run executable program, for example set path=%path%;c:\j2sdk\bin),
    I think the only difference with before is:
    1,oracle version is changed from enterprise version to personal version
    2,OS is changed from NT to windows 98
    but i dont know if it lead to problem and can you give me some advice?

    You can verify the settings of the path to your libraries with
    System.out.println(System.getProperty("java.library.path"));before you call System.loadLibrary(), so you know if it is correct.
    I also found this information (for Solaris):
    The shared library file name requires a "lib" prefix and a ".so" extension. Do not include the "lib" prefix or the ".so" extension for the argument that you pass to the System.loadLibrary method.
    I don't know if that helps you solving your problem.

    ok , in line 2915
    XPathQueryService service = (XPathQueryService) col.getService("XPathQueryService", "1.0");this declaration is standard when writing an xquery.
    and col has been declared before this line
    Collection col = DatabaseManager.getCollection("xmldb:exist://localhost:8080/exist/xmlrpc/db/XMLroom","admin","");
