Why is bridge reducing number of characters in keywords in IPTC?

I have a lot of photos tagged with keywords and titles in Windows explorer. I am trying to somehow convert these to IPTC format. I had been told that bridge could do this but need some help.
Firstly what is the easiest way to make the IPTC data stick to the photos, do I need to open each one and save the file individuallly? I have tried doing a batch rename but when i open the photos in another piece of software i have it seems the IPTC keywords have been restricted t a small number of characters. Is bridge doing this? Is there a character limit in IPTC?

See answer in this thread in post #2.   http://forums.adobe.com/thread/544918;jsessionid=6A1F8C7464640A9CE95D1B66951A5B38.node0?ts tart=0

  • Number of characters in keywords.

    Hi, everyone.
    How many characters can one use for keywords in Bridge ?
    This is actually a two part question. Let me rephrase it:
    Q1. How many characters is the maximum allowed for every single keyword term or phrase ?
    Q2. What is the maximum number of characters or keywords that can be assigned to any individual file ?
    I've done a search on Adobe's site but didn't find any manual or user guide that covers this in detail. Where can information on topics involving keywords and metadata in Bridge be found ?
    TIA,
    Joe

    Not sure if you have found this one already but here is more about
    keywording:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402660.html
    If the link doesn't work try a google search for the knowledge base tech
    document kb402660
    The answers to your specific questions are not there but from my point of
    view it would be preferable to use as short as possible words because you
    and others might need to type a keyword to find it and long difficult words
    are not really that helpful in my opinion
    Also don't know if the number of keywords are limited but the search
    function is also capable of looking in to the description, combined with the
    option to use a lot of keywords it might fulfill your needs?

    Why is asking a question to Firefox so difficult, and limited to a limited number of 'characters'?

    Sorry for the confusion; it seems as though I am the one confused--after jumping through several hoops, I thought I was sending a question to the Firefox help support...my question was about 7 characters too long to send, apparently.

  • Why does Bridge open raw files (ndg) in Raw window even though the 'Open in Photoshop' option is...

    I don't understand why in Bridge there are 2 choices, -1- Open raw and -2- Open in Photoshop and yet both choices give you the same result--The raw window opens  with PS below it. After having worked on my raw NEF files I save it to dng. My thinking behind this, is that I alreay have done what was needed and would now like to start working on it within Photoshop. It seems that the only way to automatically open it directly within PS is if I save it as a tiff, psd or jpg. But since this is not what I want to do then why must I add extra steps as opposed to just opening it hwere I want. I mean the 2 choices are there, so why not do what it is being asked?

    If I may step in in this discussion, I always use DNG but never have used ACR to achieve this result.
    As Curt stated the changes made in ACR to a Raw file (or for that matter a DNG file) are undoable without problems.
    My workflow (using Canon CR2 but that is not important, let's say a dSLR generated Raw File) is to use Photodownloader in Bridge (not perfect by far but still the best and easiest way for me).
    I connect my CF card using a card reader and let Adobe Photodownloader do the work.
    Inhere I use several options:
    - convert the CR2 file to a DNG
    - back up the original CR2 on a separate disk
    - rename the DNG to yyyymmdd (shot date) and sequence number
    - add a metadata template for copyright to all the DNG files.
    Sorting out the keepers I open the DNG in ACR and either hit Open (for open directly in PS) or use save as Tiff or PSD depending on next step in development or simply hit Done to apply changes and leave it for later use.
    The advantage of having both ACR in PS and Bridge is huge. The only difference between both is that by default PS has the Open Button selected and Bridge (open in Camera Raw) has the Done button selected, thats all.
    But here is the good part, you can use both simultaneously! For example have PS in film strip mode with multiple files selected and when changes are ready hit Save as start the process but locks up PS itself. Switch to Bridge and use Open in Camera Raw and start with the next job while ACR PS is still running in the background
    When I open a DNG in PS using ACR in either PS or Bridge I continue developing with actions and fine tune with layer mask, brush etc etc.
    Sometimes use Save As for PSD with the layers still active (huge files) when needing to revisit or not quite ready. But mostly I use an action to flatten the files and save as PSD.
    Both DNG and PSD are ending up in my archive, my clients receive whet they want, PSD, Tiff but mostly jpeg and resized.
    When having the job finished and every once in a while I clear out the original CR2 files from Back up because in all the years I use DNG (at least 5 years) I never had to use the original CR2 instead of the DNG that is thoroughly backed up as is the original PSD.
    But since disk space is cheap you can choose to keep them.
    An other option is to include the original raw file in the DNG but I would not recommend that because the file size is getting almost twice as big.
    The biggest plus side for me using DNG is that the xmp data is written directly to the file while original CR2 or NEF needs an xmp side car file next to it with this data.
    However saving changes to metadata is taking a bit longer to a DNG then to an XMP side car file, depending on system resources and time this never been a real problem for me

  • Limit number of characters in a JTextField

    Now I know that this question has been asked very often but the answers that have been given do not always work. According to other posts you can either use a KeyListener or a DocumentListener. The problem with the code that I have seen using a KeyListener is that you can't use the backspace key when the limit is reached. I am using a JTextField and all the answers dealing with Documents use a JTextArea and I can't figure out how to get it to work with JTextField. I don't understand why the Swing package just didn't come out with a method or cunstructor for these components to limit the number of characters. It would simplify things a lot. I need a JTextField to allow only 25 characters and allow backspaces. Thanks

    Here is the code that I am using. It seems to be working somewhat. The only problem now is that when you type the 26th key that new key overwrites what is in the 25th position. Is this the correct way of doing it and if so how do I get it to quit adding in the key that was just pressed?
    user_box.addKeyListener(new KeyAdapter() {
        public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) {
         if((user_box.getText().length() > 24)&&(e.getKeyCode() != KeyEvent.VK_BACK_SPACE)) {
    //     System.out.println(e.getKeyCode());
         e.consume();
         try {
              user_box.setText(user_box.getText(0,24));
         }catch(Exception ex) {}
         Toolkit kit = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
         kit.beep(); //system beep
    });

  • How can I reduce number of rows in Planning webform in Smartview?

    Hi,
    I downloaded a Planning webform into Smartview. I want to reduce the 1000 rows down to 20 for a particular user as he does not submit data for the other 980 rows. How can I reduce number of rows in Planning webform in Smartview?
    Someone said that I can insert vlookup code into Smartiveiw pointing to a new worksheet that has only 20 rows. I could not test it as our Planning 9.3.1 has a bug that would not take sub variables from Smartview.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    My first reaction is why do you have a form with a 1000 rows, surely this is a design issue and doesn't benefit anybody when entering data, anyway why not have security on the dimensions then users will only see what they have access to when they retrieve the form in smart view or through the planning web front end.
    Cheers

  • Maximum number of characters in displacement file

    Is there a maximum number of characters that can be in the name of a saved displacement file? When I save a displacement file with 12 characters or less, the Filter>Distort>Displace works fine; when I save the same file with 13 characters, nothing happens when I try to apply the filter. Obviously, the solution is to save files with 12 or fewer characters. I just wondered if this is a known limitattion. Thanks.

    Yes, the displacement files are in a "buried" folder, but they are in the same folder. One character did make a difference: displacement.psd worked, displacement1.psd didn't. I made a copy of displacement1.psd on the desktop and it did work so your idea that path length has importance is valid. Maybe it is the entire name of the file, path included, that is the determining factor. If so, it appears that the total number is somewhere around 122 characters. If there is a definitive answer to this question, please add it to this discussion. Otherwise, this question is answered. Another quirky Photoshop "Two-o'clock-in-the-morning-why-isn't-this-working" problem is resolved. Thanks!

  • How to restrict number of characters for an input field

    Hi All,
    I have an input field.
    The max number of characters for this input field is 10.
    when a user enter more then 10 characters. it should prompt for an error or the input field should not allow to accpet the 11 character.
    how we do this in VC.

    Rgds

    Hi Srinu
    You could achieve this by configuring error messages under the formula:-
    Select the control properties and in the Input field at the Display tab write the formula
    "IF((@<LEN(text)>10),'appropriate message','Records available')"
    Note :- there is a LEN(text) under text functions in formula tab.

  • Is there a way to set a limit on the number of characters each cell will hold in numbers?

    Hi there, I'm creating a CSV file via Numbers and would like to set a limit to the number of characters a cell will hold in numbers. This way, when I copy text from my source, and paste it into the numbers cell, the text will be cut off at the character limit I've placed for that cell.
    Specifically, I would like my character limit per cell in a column on a new spreadsheet to be 100 characters. I have text to copy & paste into roughly 10 different cells and I'd like it to all be 100 characters.
    I am using Numbers version 9 of iWork and 10.7.5 OS.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you t quinn for your reply as I do really appreciate the help.
    I don't quite understand what your suggestion was and before I try to figure it out and play around with numbers, I thought I should clarify further. When i wrote I want to paste the content into the cell and have it limited to 100 characters I was mis-spoken. I actually have all the content already in the columns in a spreadsheet and would now like to just limit some of the columns to hold only 100 characters in a cell so that when its a CSV file it will be accepted to the program I'm trying to upload it to.
    SO does that change the way you can answer my question?
    Is there a way to just limit the content currently in a spreadsheet to 100 characters per cell?
    Kindly

  • How do I limit number of characters in a JTextField?(different from others)

    Hi,
    I know this question has been posted several times on this forum, but my question is actually a different one. So please read.
    I have the following code that puts two JTextFields in a JFrame. I want to limit the number of characters in the first JTextField to three characters. What's different about my question from other solutions provided, is that I don't want to be able to type more than three characters in the JTextField, and then not be able to get out of JTextField unless I have three or less characters. What I do want, is to have maximum of three characters, not be able to type the fourth, and have access to the other JTextField at all times.
    I have tried the following solution of setting an InputVerifier to my JTextField, but it hasn't worked, since I can still type the fourth character.
    Looking forward to your help!
    Thanks.

    Thanks, JayDS! Your suggestion worked. And I've come up with the following code with help of your suggestion. However, I'm not happy with the fact that I see empty spaces in my JFormattedTextField when I don't have anything entered in it, or when my textfield has focus and I click it again. Also, I'd like the text alignment to always stay on the right, even if I have less than 3 digits.
    Could you please help me out with that?
