Why is my iphoto  rebuilding library database

I went into my iphoto and it wanted me to rebuild my library database, so pushed ok because i thought it might help with my photos. Now i cant close it and cant shut down my computer can you please help me. Its just thinking all the time.
Please help. Thanks i dont want to lose my photos.

Your iPhoto library is not duplicating anything. Give virtually no information the only guess is that you imported an old iPhoto library into a new one.  NEVER import one photo library into another one. If you did and still have the old library you can easily recover. Drag the library you messed up to the desktop and drag the old library to the pictures folder and launch iPhoto

  • What does it mean in IPhoto repairing library database?

I opened iPhoto and it gave me an error regarding my library database.  What does this mean?  It is now "repairing library database".  What is this doing?

iPhoto is essentially a database index that keeps track of the photos in its library. When something goes wrong with that database index, it can be rebuild to fix errors.
You can read more about this in this article  iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library

  • IPhoto rebuilding library freezes

Two days ago I was sending images from iPhoto over Messages. I sent about 50 images fine in groups of ten. When sending the last four (or five?) images the images stayed on the top of all other applications. I quit iPhoto and the images stayed visible. I shutdown all applications (quit, not force quit) and rebooted my MBP. When I started iPhoto again all my images were gone. I shutdown iPhoto and tried the option+command key sequence when starting iPhoto. The first two options, "repair permissions" and "rebuild thumbnails", did nothing. The third option, repair database, returned my images but lost all my "faces". When I choose "rebuild database" my MBP freezes when iPhoto reaches the "restoring faces" step.
A few weeks ago I had a freezing problem that eventually turned out to be some software (Sierra Wireless) while "cleaning up" my MBP. I haven't removed any software recently. This freezing seems to be isolated to iPhoto.
    - I have moved "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist" and "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist.lockfile" out of the way.
    - I have deleted/uninstalled iPhoto from Applications and reinstalled from the AppStore.
    - I have downloaded "iPhoto Library Manager", but have not tried it yet.
    What to try next?
    Mike

    - Photos was unchecked in iCloud preferences
    - moved iLifeAsset Management out of the way
    - booted
    - started iPhoto with option+control, selected "rebuild library" (fourth option)
    - iPhoto hung again when "restoring faces"

  • Why won't iPhoto 11 Library will not stay Repaired?

I recently upgraded to iPhoto 11. I launched iPhoto 11 the first time and it updated my library as expected.  Subsequently, each time I open iPhoto it says my library needs repair. So...O.K. I choose to repair it. But it doesn't seem to take. Still, I quit iPhoto and relaunch it but I keep getting the same dialog box asking my to repair my library. I dumped entire iPhoto library and copied my backup to my hard drive. This time it worked...for a couple of days. Then the same thing...prompts me to repair each time I launch the app.
So far this has just been inconvenient. I have chosen not to repair with no apparent issues. However, today I noticed that none of my iPhoto Events or Albums dated after Dec. 17, 2011 are showing up in iTunes when I sync to my iPod. Furthermore, since everything worked for a few days I went a head and updated my backup library. But it too needs to be repaired each time I open it (this is on an external hard drive).
    Anybody have any ideas here?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto rebuilding library modified pics?

    Hi,
My iphoto has been freezing and after reading different posts I rebuilt my library.First, I created a new library from my time machine. However, the thumbnails and pics were not visible so I rebuilt this new library using iphoto library manager. All the photos appeared with faces and places. However, the originals were there but I want my modified pictures. I do not want to go through my 15,000 pics and readjust all of them one by one. What should I do now?
Also, my videos did not show up (they were in a separate event) because my hard drive now has 3 libraries and is full. Should I delete the very first library? How do I bring those videos in the libray that works and from where?
    THanks for any help
    T~

    What version of iPhoto?
Also: If your hard drive is full...
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on. Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially. Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do. Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.

  • Rebuild library / lost 'book'

    Hi
I think i know the answer to this one but thought it was worth a try just in case anyone can help...
Over the last few months i have been building a book to print off as xmas pressies. I went to launch iphoto yesterday and it just crashed on start up. Tried ditching prefs but that didn't work.
I have photo's backed up on 2 external drives and 2 computers so have never been worried about losing any images and to be honest in 6 years i've never had any problems. I was pointed towards iphoto library manager which although successfully rebuilds a library with all my folders - it doesn't bring back books. Does anyone know of any way to extract a book from a corrupt library, from searches i think it might be stored deep down in that corrupt library meaning it's gone and i just have to start again.... arrrrggg.
Does anyone know if i rebuild from iphoto itself rather than iphoto library manger it gives options of 'rebuilding the iphoto library database' rather than a full rebuild - would this help or would this just do exactly what library manager has done i.e. import all images and create a new library without the 'book'
Many thanks in advance for any advice.
    Robin

    Sooo.....
I managed to get 'the book' back!
I did a rebuild from iphoto library manager (which basically gives you a restored version of your library as a safety copy) - i then set iphoto to start up back from the original corrupt default library (from iphoto library manger) which still crashes on startup.
Then I did a rebuild from iphoto itself on startup (hold down option and command keys on launch). This gives you several options - i tried a couple of times, once just a library database rebuild and then the second time ticking all the boxes (rebuilds thumbnails etc...takes ages...). This sort of worked in that is let me into the corrupt library and i could access all my folders and more importantly 'the book'
Immediately i did screen grabs of the pages of the book just as a backup so i at least had a chance of rebuilding it.
What i then found was that if you quit iphoto then relaunched it crashed again...
Did the rebuild library database option again to get back into it.
Then i removed a few images that i thought might be throwing it out... (adjusted in photoshop etc..) and the most important thing that i always forget about with iphoto...EMPTY THE TRASH IN IPHOTO. Where you will find that all those pictures you have deleted from your library over many months are still sitting there.
So there you have it, iphoto was back and stable again - i can only assume it was a corrupt image or something in the trash can it didn't like. I hope you don't have the same problem as me, but if you do (maybe why you are looking at this thread) there is hope!
    Cheers
    Robin

  • Problem with rebuilding iPhoto library database

Some of my videos in iPhoto play fine, however, I get the ! sign with some of them when I attempt to play.  I've tried rebuilding the library database, but the process gets stuck at 92% and never completes.  What now?

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • Will I lose my photos if I "rebuild my library database" in iPhoto?

Please help! I opened iPhoto and it says I need to rebuild my library database. It is running now but doesn't seem to be moving. I am afraid I am going to lose all of my pictures... I have thousands. Has anyone been through this before? Are all of my pictures going to be gone after "rebuilding"?
    Thanks!

Thanks. I have been unable to access my photos for the last day or so. I tried restarting a couple of times and still had the same difficulty. The rebuild completed and I have my photos again (whew!!! I was afaid I'd lose thousands).
Thanks for the recommendation to back it up. I've been meaning to. Is the best way to use an external drive or Time Machine?

  • Can I force quit iphoto while it is rebuilding the library database?

I have my iphoto library database and application on an external drive.  I did this because I have over 20 thousand photos and I wanted to conserve space on my MacBook Pro.  I bumped the connection and the computer decided on its own to rebuild the iphoto library.  I was worried that something was wrong so I let it do its thing.  It has been spinning for over 8 hours.  The message reads ... rebuilding library 22902 versions restored
    What do I do?

Well I would let it finish. Though if that number hasn't changed then the process may be hung. so you'll have no choice but to force quit.
What format is the external drive?
If the force quit is necessary you can redo the rebuild yourself - what version of iPhoto do you have?

  • My iPhoto closed unexpectedly and now it says "Rebuilding the iPhoto Library database". What is going on and are my photos still going to be there?

My iPhoto closed unexpectedly and now it says "Rebuilding the iPhoto Library database". What is going on and are my photos still going to be there?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what were you doing when iPhoto closed unexpectedly?
how big is your library, i.e. how many photos?
how long has the rebuilding been going on?
do you have a recent backup of the library made just prior to this occurring?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • IPhoto crashes even after trying to rebuild iPhoto library database.

iPhoto won't open after I synced new iPhone 5s to my Mac v10.6.8. I tried holding down the Option and Command key and this forced the iPhoto library manager to open. I then ticked to rebuild Library Manager and then it crashes again.  I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it. I have checked for latest software updates and it appears to be update. My iphoto is version 7.1.5

I tried holding down the Option and Command key and this forced the iPhoto library manager to open. I then ticked to rebuild Library Manager and then it crashes again.
What you have accessed here are iPhoto's own repair tools. iPhoto Library Manager is a 3rd party application.
I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it
By default your iPhoto Library is in your Pictures Folder.
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • Error message repairing library database keeps appearing in iPhoto in iMac

Why does the error message "repairing library database" keeps appearing?

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

    TD

  • Iphoto won't quit, won't import photos, stalls while editing photos despite rebuilding the database

I have mountain lion and the newest version of iphoto.   It won't quit unless I force quit it, it won't import photos, it won't let me edit photos without freezing up.   I have tried rebuilding the database and repairing permissions without success

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it freezes also try this:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the new library doesn't freeze or act like your current library then your current library is the culprit.
In that case  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
