Wifi router reccomendations

Looking to purchase a wifi router for my iphone 3GS. Can you all chime in with models you've had luck with? Looking to get a 802.11g type.
*One other thing, would it a faster connection getting a "g" or an "n" and running it backwards? (I read that most n models are backward compatable with g and b version adapters)
Thanks.

So given this information would a dual band with N do anything for me?
Not right now, but if you were to get the new iphone(it supports "N") or purchase a new laptop, you'd be glad you bought an "N" capable router. Do what you want/fits your budget. You asked for recommendations, I gave you mine.

Mostly folks here write to describe problems they're having, but I'm looking for info on what DOES work (before I purchase).
In short, I'm looking for  a wireless N Router (not Apple branded) that works well with Mac, Windows,& Apple Devices ( iPad, AppleTV, iPod) etc. It doesn't have to have a lot of bells or whistles - just very dependable with a good Web Page interface. And, ideally good internet/phone support. I mainly need this to speed up my wireless g network for AirPlay usage.
    Can anyone reccomend anything?
I'm not sure where to post this, so please excuse if I crosspost

Well, it is pricey, but I use a Netgear n900 (wndr4500).  This is a simultaneous dual band (2.4Ghz/5Ghz), 802.11/a/b/g/n wifi router with independently configurable radios for the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.
In my home it is used to simultaneously connect a MBP, an 5yr old Windows Vista Acer (with an old DLink g wifi card added to it), a PS3, my Sony LCD TV, a Kodak wifi printer, and older Dell wifi printer, my old iPhone 3Gs, my current iPhone 4 and iPad, a Nook color, a Nook simple touch ereader and an AT&T 3G microcell via ethernet cable connection (has nice QoS settings to make the microcell's ethernet port top priority).  Also occasionally my old PowerBook G4.
it works flawlessly.  As far as "phone" support, do you mean VOIP?  That is highly dependent on your ISP's level of service usually, more so than the router being used.  I know my microcell works fine on my n900, but I have cable internet and get a nice clean upload rate of close to 1Mbps (upload rate and quality is often the big limitation for good VOIP calling).
There are cheaper options, but in terms of performance the n900 seems very impressive to me (and it has fairly good web setup/configuration tools - not the simplest as it has many configuration options, but well laid out and easy to use if you are at least somewhat familiar with wifi setups).
For what it is worth, I've used Linksys, Netgear and Belkin in the past with a highly mixed wifi suite of devices (Apple, Windows and others) for years and never had a problem getting my network to run flawlessly.  The last Airport I personally owned was the original gray space saucer model.

  • I have an wireless printer and a new wifi router. I have set the printer and iPhone / iPad correctly to the new router but when i try to print it won't recognise the air printer. Help. All was working fine on my old router

I Have a new wifi router and have set up my iPad / iPhone and wireless printer correctly  to the new router but I can't print from the iPad and iPhone. It keeps saying ' no AirPrint printer found'. Help please!

Start with the most basic thing that you can try. Unplug the router from power for about 30 seconds, and restart the printer and the iPad and plug the router back into power.

  • My Deskjet 3050 J610 will not connect to my Virgin WiFi router for use with Apple Mac laptop.

I live in the UK and have Broadband access via a Virgin connection and WiFi router. My Apple MacBook laptop connects to the WiFi with no difficulties. However I have an HP Deskjet 3050 J610 printer which will not connect to the router. When I try to connect, the blue light just keeps on flashing but a connection is not found. Consequently my MacBook cannot "see" the printer on the network. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    See if this helps.

  • Using Remote app on iPhone 5 without a separate internet connection and wifi router.

    Hi,
I need to be able to control iTunes within my MacBook Pro remotely. Using my mobile broadband service and wireless router I've been able to get the Remote app to allow my iPhone 5 to do the job nicely through Home Share.  So I went and bought a separate WiFi router and tried to do the same thing. Of course when it didn't work, I discovered that I need an internet connection and WiFi network to make the Home Sharing work.
So I got to thinking, can I create a WiFi hotspot using the Personal HotSpot functionality of my iPhone, set up Home Sharing on phone and MacBookPro and then use the Remote app. Ideally this would work as it seems all the key components are in place.
The MacBook Pro accepts the iPhone hotspot as a means of Home Sharing, however the iPhone won't use the personal hotspot to Home Share and I can't connect to the iPhone personal hotspot on the iPhone itself.
Does anyone know how to make this work for me? It would be such as neat solution if I can get it to work - not to mention the potential to save me about $200 (I need to set this model up for two people).
    Cheers
    Kathy

Same trouble here, iPad 2 with latest OS and remote app, iPod with latest OS and app.

  • My apple tv mirroring is slow.  So slow it shuts off.  Any thoughts on cause?  I use this device in my office for presentations without a problem.  In my home with a stronger wifi router, I'm having issues.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • EPrint does not work after new wifi router on Verizon DSL

I have been using ePrint on my iPod, iPad, and iPhone for a few months without a problem, but recently had to switch to a new wifi router on my Verizon DSL, as my wifi kept turning off and Verizon's solution was an updated wifi router. Since the switch, I cannot ePrint from my mobile devices. I can, after reconfiguration, print from my laptops. The ePrint app still finds the Deskjet 3050a, says "sending to printer", but will not print. The ePrint is turned on. I tried to delete the app and reinstall in hopes that I can start fresh, but it still does not work. I tried to add a new printer, with the email supplied on the ePrint screen on the printer, but nothing.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Honor Student
Is your printer connected to the new router as it sounds like it is still looking for the old one ?  Maybe  just disconnect it and reconnect it again to your new router and then the ePrint APP should pick it up.
    I work for HP.
    Thanks

  • Retina macbook pro can't auto connect to wifi after wifi router rebooted

My macbook pro with retina can’t automatically connect to wifi after the wifi router was rebooted. There is exclamation mark on wifi sign. As I clicked the wifi sign, it shows no Internet connects. However, It is strange there is a tick in front of my wifi name. In order to use wifi, I had to click off wifi, and then click on. The previous version, Macbook pro, has no problem like this. I had deleted all files under wifi library, but still fail. Appreciating for any way to solve it!

  • How can I tell Apple to store my MAC-address of my Wifi Router in there location DB?

    Hello
Recently I bought a new Wifi Router and when I use the Maps App it tells that my ipad is located in China (Shangai)
When I also want to use the automatic timezone feature in the preferences app it indicates that my ipad is in China (Shangai)
I have already searched for a number of discussions (in and out the Apple Support) and their I found that the problem is in a location DB managed by Apple (crowd-sourced database). It seems that my Wifi Router is registered with a wrong location. :-(
    my questions :
.- is the somebody that can give me a procedure (certified by Apple) how I can update this location DB?
.- How can I store my Wifi Router MAC address with the correct location in this DB?
    Already thanks in advance
    Kindly regards

I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch and just did the update to IOS 5. Now I can't connect to my Netgear wifi router. My iPhone connects fine along with all of my other laptops etc. I have the router set with WPA-PSK [TKIP] security and an access list. I've confirmed the mac address is included on that list and that the password is correct. Under choses netwrok I select the network and it just goes into a spin. I have tried removing the password and the access list settings and it still will not complete the connection to the router thus no internet access. The routers firmware is also up to date. This thing worked fine before this update and I've already tried to restore from backup. Any ideas or is the wifi nic bad in this thing with the new apple firmware update? Any fix?

Thanks Bob, I don't know why but it all of a sudden worked a few days later. It's a mystery but at least problem solved.

  • I installed a new wifi router and airport will not connect automatically to it. It sees the network but will not connect unless I tell it to.

I installed a new wifi router and airport will not connect automatically to it. It sees the network but will not connect unless I tell it to. I can't find anywhere in the utility or network preferences that will allow me to choose this router as the default. How do I fix this? BTW I'm using Lion.

Are there any previous networks that you have used that have the same password as Molly?  YES
Using System Preferences > Network > AirPort Advanced again, you need to remove any listings of previous networks that used the same password as Molly. Click the name of the network and click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list of connections.
Also delete any other networks (except Molly at the top of the list) that might have used the same name...Molly in the past.
Delete any other networks that you no longer need so that your Mac will search for networks more quickly
    Click OK, then click Apply
Open KeyChain Access and look for a listing of any old networks that you no longer need. Click to highlight the name of the network, then click the Delete Key on your computer.
Then look for any old networks that might have used the name Molly in the past and do the same for them.
Then look for any old networks that might have used the same password as the password for your "new" Molly network and delete them in the same way
Click the KeyChain Access menu just next to the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the computer screen
and then click KeyChain First Aid
Enter the main administrator password for the Mac you are using and highlight the Repair button. Then click Start. You will see a message that repairs have been completed
    Quit Keychain Access
Power down the entire network...all devices...order is not important
Power up the modem first, then your main router, the other devices one at a time
Log on to Molly and see if the Mac remembers it after a few tries. If not, I'm afraid that you will need to change the name of the wireless network and password on your router due to corruption issues on the Mac. You have done everything possible without re-installing the complete operating system.

  • My iphone 5 does not remember the password of my home network. Well this is ot the case with my ipad. The wifi gets disconnected every 2 minutes. Its not any problem with my wifi router as my ipad and other devices work fine. So how do i fix this problem?

Well my iphone 5 does not remember my home network. This is not a problem with the wifi router as the ipad works absolutely fine. The wifi loses it connection in just 2 minutes. So could you please fix this problem.

Not unless the modem is causing a problem.
What you want to do is get it to work reliably over Ethernet first, then tackle wifi. Power off the modem. On your macbook, delete the Ethernet configuration and the Wifi configuration. Power up the modem, then connect the mac via Ethernet. Create the new Ethernet configuration and see if you can connect.

  • Connecting T5 to Netgear WiFi router

I have been trying to connect my T5 using the Palm WiFi card to my Netgear DG834G ADSL WiFi router and have read the very helpful check list provided on your site as well as the other correspondence. I started with the usual problem of the thing disconnecting after trying to download the IP and worked up to manual entry of IPs and DNSs etc.
    So far I have :-
Found the T5 MAC and entered it as a trusted device in the router.
From the router itself I have found :-
The two DNS values (these are for the ADSL port?)
The hex 128 bit Key (all 4 are the same) and checked it against a separate key generator using the phrase I entered when I set the router up with the P.C.
The following IP address information:- For the ADSL port:- the IP address and it’s mask, network type (PPPoa), the IP address for the gateway and the two DNS values. I have also found the IP address for the router LAN port.
Loading these in various combinations into the T5 setup in manual causes the unit to seem to log on and display the field strength. But Blazer etc does not work. If I change the WEP key to make it wrong it logs on in the same way, which is very suspicious!
I have managed to get the T5 to download the IP address in auto (after setting it as a trusted device in the router) by switching to ad-hoc and it returns a message saying that it has "connected". Checking the network "info" in prefs/WiFi then shows an IP not found in the router information with it’s mask. However, no DNS info or IP address in the line called "Router" shows up and although the response from Blazer is different (quick connect and URL rejection), nothing works. Manually entering the DNSs with auto IP recovery in ad-hac did not change anything.
I have been through entering the WEP key in hex etc.
Of all the IP address information available, which ones should be entered in the three fields required on the T5? The DNS values relate to the ADSL port. Is this OK.
I would welcome any suggestions. I have yet to try it at a remote site, but I am sure the basic kit is OK, just finger trouble !!!
    Thanks in advance

Russel, you haven't mentioned if you have the router's comm. speed set to be compatible with an 802.11/b device.
Do you have this setting correct?

  • I have a wifi router already. Can I connect a time capsule to that wirelessly?, I have a wifi router already. Can I connect my time capsule to that wirelessly?

I Have a wifi router which is located in my brothers bedroom. Now I am buying a iMac. Along with it I want to buy a time capsule which I want in my bed room. Is it possible to connect the two wifi routers wirelessly?

The Time Capsule can be configured to "join a wireless network" so backups will occur over the wireless network that is being provided by the wireless router in the other bedroom.
Things will be fine as long as there is a strong wireless signal where the Time Capsule will be located.
But...the Time Capsule cannot "extend" the wireless network or provide more wireless coverage...unless...the other router is also an Apple product.
