Windows Server 2012 R2 - Join Domain fails (Active Directory)

Well guys - I don't know what to do about this problem anymore...
I set up a DC for my home network - Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation. Everything is set up fine - DNS, AD - I suceeded joining the domain with other PCs in the network.
Problem:
When I want to join the domain "lionnet.at" it tells me that it cannot find the network address after I typed in the domain admin password.
The dns entries are fine - checked it with nslookup. The DC name is lionhead.
nslookup:
set q=srv
> set q=srv
> _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.lionnet.at
Server:  lionhead.lionnet.at
Address:  10.0.0.150
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.lionnet.at SRV service location:
          priority       = 0
          weight         = 100
          port           = 389
          svr hostname   = lionhead.lionnet.at
lionhead.lionnet.at     internet address = 10.0.0.150
I tried several solutions: editing the lmhosts/hosts file, deactivating IPv6, setting a static IPv4
Any ideas on this?

what the hell...it was an external soundcard preventing the join...i installed it a week ago - unplugged it - "Welcome to the domain lionnet.at!"
Hi CloneBraveB,
Glad to hear that you have solved this issue and thanks for sharing in the forum. Your time and efforts are highly appreciated.
Would you please let me know the complete error message that you get when failed to join the problematic client computer to the domain?
In addition, for a test, please select another computer and install the external soundcard again, then attempt to join the computer to domain. Did you reproduce this issue?
By the way, would you please let me know more details of that soundcard?
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
Best regards,
Justin Gu

  • Windows 8.1 pro client on a Windows server 2012 R2 Essentials domain, how to change lock when idle?

    Hi,
I need to find out how to do something?
I have Windows 8.1 pro running on my PC and its part of a domain which is Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, it all runs perfectly except for a little niggle where my Win 8.1 PC locks after its not used for a short time.  What I want to find out is
how to change this so it no longer locks when idle?  I know this is a security feature but as its just my home pc it can be very annoying to log in again after walking away from the PC for a few min's.
I've had a look through the default domain policy but there are so many settings that I can't find it, that's even if there is a setting there?
    Anyway can anyone help?
    Thanks

    Hi,
We can try to implement by use High performance power plan or GPO to prevent computer from locking down:
    Refer to the solution here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/0863112d-ee54-4808-9d27-0380d7bf04b0/gpo-to-disable-lock-computer-?forum=winserverGP
Also, you can check if there is any task scheduled for idle:

  • Window Server 2012 R2 Job Scheduler Failing.

    Hi,
Currently, my company's Window Server 2012 R2 job scheduler having a problem.
Then i found out the solution at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2617046, so i download the hotfix to fix the problem.  However, i get another error as below.
    Please, what can i do?
    Thanks
    Best Regard
    Vincent.

    Amy,
Thanks for the tips, I follow the settings. I checked the condition and troubleshoot according to the lists you provided.
The task was configured to run only when a specified network is available. (Not set this)
The configured expiration time for the task has passed. (no expired time set)
The task is configured to ignore or queue a new task instance if a previous instance is still running. (not set this)
The task is configured not to run when the computer is on battery power. (yes, will not run when computer on battery power. will not happen because is a server all the time running AC power).
The task is configured to run only if a specific user is logged on. (must select this, if not, the scheduler will not run at all)
The task was disabled by a user. (is enabled)
The previous task instance might have been running longer than expected because a component is busy processing data. If the task is normally expected to run for this length of time, consider modifying the task triggers to take this run-time length
into consideration, or configure the task to be terminated after a preset time. (already set "Stop the task if runs longer than 3 days" and "If the running task does not end when requested, force it to stop".  and "Do not start
a new instance " had been set)
Frankly, for the moment it run normally, somehow, I don't know when the incident will happen again.  It seem randomly happen, and not by default.  That is why kinda need the fix to fix this bug.  Cannot trigger email when this incident happen.
And the schedule we run is highly critical.
    Thanks.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 robocopy not copying inherited directory permission from source file server to destination ?

Can anyone here please help me with Robocopy on Windows Server 2012 R2 to copy the file server content from \\OldFileServer\Data share into the local S:\Data drive ?
here's my script that I use to copy 11 TB of file server contents:
    robocopy.exe "\\OLDFILESERVER\Data" S:\Data *.* /E /SECFIX /SEC /XO /ZB /COPYALL /MIR /DCOPY:DAT /R:0 /W:0 /NP /NFL /NDL /TEE /LOG:"G:\robocopy.log"
Any kind of help and assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    /* Server Support Specialist */

    Hi,
Based on my tests, inherited permissions will not be copied using robocopy.exe.
That’s because that after we copy or move an objects to another volume, the object inherits the permissions of its new parent folder.
My suggestion for you is to disable the inheritance on corresponding subfolders, and Convert inherited permissions into explicit permissions on this object. After that, those permissions can be copied.

  • In-place upgrade of Windows Server 2012 RDS to R2 fails

    Hi All
I have a Server 2012 Standard RDS virtual machine (vmware) on which I have tried doing an in-place upgrade to 2012 R2 but it constantly fails.
It sits at the "Collecting files, settings and applications" process for quite a while - always on 0% and then says: Installing Windows was Canceled "Setup can't continue. Restart the computer and restart Setup. When prompted, try getting
    the latest updates."
I have tried combinations of all the settings during setup to look for updates, not look for updates, etc., rebooted several times, even disabled the RDS services and still the same result.
As a test, I tried doing an in-place upgrade on the base OS installation that was used to create this VM and it works perfectly. The only difference between the servers is that the live has RDS role installed.
Is there any Microsoft documentation on the 2012 RDS in-place upgrade process to R2?
Can anyone offer any suggestion as to why the in-place upgrade might be failing with the RDS role installed?
    Thanks heaps

As I stated I have already tried an in-place upgrade on the base 2012 vm that I used to create the production RDP server and it worked.
It seems that the RDS role may be preventing the upgrade?
Ideally I want to go down the in-place upgrade on the production server as we have alot of users using this machine. I would rather not have to build an R2 RDS server from scratch.
if you really think the RDS is preventing the upgrade, how about stopping the RDS service then do an in place upgrade.
    check how it goes.. :)
Every second counts..make use of it. Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 RAS Install Fails

I have a server 2012 Essentials R2 box installed and running at a client site, however when trying to configure the VPN for the client I receive an error. 'The referenced assembly could not be found. Error: 0x80073701
To narrow down the role that was causing it to fail I started to install the roles and features separately so that I could find which role was causing the error. I installed IIS and a few other bits, and when I got to installing the Remote Access
feature it fails with the above error, I have done some research on the web and found the windows update readiness tool, so I ran the elevated command 'DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth'. Upon completion this returned: 'The restore operation completed
successfully. The component store corruption was repaired. The operation completed successfully.' I also found this point in the CBS log, however the summary on there reported no errors were found?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get the installation to finish successfully? And can anyone shed any light on why this might've occurred to avoid it in future installs.
    Many Thanks
    Sam Padgett

You can get a free SSL Cert from Microsoft, and the VPN on Essentials uses SSTP by default which is better than PPTP.
You can always enable PPTP afterwards if you really want to, but there is no reason not to setup Essentials with the SSL considering it is free, and a lot less hassle to get other things working the way you want them.

  • Promoting Windows Server 2012 R2 to Domain Controller

    Hello!
I have a domain called "company.com" and I have set my public/router IP "361.250.148.222" on GoDaddy account A (Host) section, and currently Windows server has one NIC with Static IP "192.168.1.100" from same router. Now I am
going to add a new forest for "company.com".
My question: do I have to set the same public IP set in DNS zone file of GoDaddy on a another NIC on my server OR same local IP received from router will suffice?!
    Thanks!

    Hi Hamed,
The router should be fine, but you will need then then NAT any inbound traffic aimed at that address to the IP of the internal Server.
If you setup internal DNS, you will need to configure that with a split DNS so that internally your DNS resolves to the internal address and external to the external address. However if GoDaddy is dealing with your external DNS then your internal DNS will
only require the internal IP addresses.
    Kind Regards

  • Windows Server Essentials Experience Role - Deployment in Active Directory Environment

    Hello
I have a new domain with 2 x DCs working normally.
If I add the Essentials Experience role to a member server primarily for Remote Web Access, VPN and Direct Access, will this affect the existing Active Directory setup in any way? I see the Dashboard wants to manage everything including file shares,
user accounts, Office 365 etc., etc., Is this going to be more trouble than it is worth?
Are there any blogs or field notes about using the Essentials Experience Role in a standard Active Directory environment?
    Advice appreciated

    Hi Susan
Many thanks for your reply but I have already installed the Essentials Experience Role on a Windows 2012 Standard R2 member server OK.
You mention that the Essentials Role wizards do not support multiple DC environments - which any existing domain would be - so I am a bit confused!
Is this because the Essentials Role wizards automatically federate the on premise AD with Azure AD or something like that?
I am not sure how this role integrates into an existing corporate structure like MS says it does.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated

  • Server 2012 DNS Configuration without using Active Directory

I need step by step instructions to configure a simple DNS setup on Server 2012.
Our server is only a file and application server without Active Directory. Basically we are setup only as a workgroup. Everyone has permissions to use everything.
The first window of the wizard starts off with " enter the domain name". I am stumped from there .
I understand that all the workstations should only be pointing to the server. Where should the server go, to get its information?
I would be much obliged for any easy information as we don't have an IT guy. Thanks

A quick search of TechNet for "dns step-by-step" turns up a nice primer as the first item -
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/1/0/b106fc39-936c-4857-a6ea-3fb9d1f37063/Windows%20Server%202008%20Step-by-Step%20Guide%20for%20DNS%20in%20Small%20Networks.doc
This document starts off explaining the terminology, such as 'domain', which is basically the naming convention.  For example, microsoft.com is a domain name.  The document does show installation with Active Directory, but it is not a requirement.
You can run the wizard on its own with no problem.  The wizard does most of the work for you and does provide help along the way.

  • Windows Server 2003 vs OS X Tiger (Active Directory)

I recently purchased a MacBook... Just trying to configure Directory Access. All is going well except for one minor issue...
Once I have logged on to my Mac via Active Directory, I see it creates a user account, but not an account login (under System Preferences).
While at the office logging on to Active Directory I saved a file on my Desktop, then got home trying to login thinking I would be able to, but it is obviously trying to login via Active Directory again when it isnt available.
    (the screen just shakes)
This works fine with PC laptops at the office & they do create a local account once logged on.
How do I go about achieving this with my MacBook?
    Thanks,
    Gavin

In Directory Access -> Authentication you set the order in which the system checks for accounts. Starting at the first entry in the list it looks for an account there, if it doesn't find one it moves down the list until all options have been checked.
If your Authentication settings have the Active Directory and the local accounts listed (which sounds like the case) then you need to check their order to see how they're used.
From your description it sounds like the AD should be checked first and if that fails, fall back to a local account, right?
In that case you will need to add a local account to the machine (via System Preferences) that matches the username you have on the server.
Additionally if you want to make sure that you have the same set of files, preferences, etc. when logged in via the local and AD accounts you will need to change the ID of your local account to match that of the AD account - all user accounts are tracked by ID not name so if your AD account ID is 12345 and your local account is 501 the OS will see them as two different users even if their names match exactly.
(Note: one option would be to use different account names with the same ID - that way you could choose the local or AD account depending on the username you entered, but the OS would see them as the same).
To change the ID, first log on as the AD user, open Terminal.app and run the command id. Amongst other things this will give you a 'uid' value.
Then create your local account via System Preferences and open /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access. Under the Users section you should find your local account and its UID which you can change to the UID handed out by the AD server.
Now you have two accounts, one from AD and one local, both of which have the same ID number. You can log in either locally or via the directory (if it's available) and get the same desktop, preferences, etc., etc., etc.

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard - HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus printer not working after promoting to Domain Controller / AD Services

An associate and myself installed the built-in drivers for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus multi-function (network) printer on a Windows Server 2012 Standard server installation and everything worked fine whenever I want to print anything directly from the
Windows Server machine (there's a reason for this, so please understand that ;)  ).
We were able to print without any problems from the Windows Server 2012 machine, using the drivers from Microsoft.  Mainly, because HP has not listed any specific support for Windows Server 2012, only Windows Server 2008 R2, however, the drivers that
came with Windows 2012 seem to work very well.
PROBLEM: I later had to promote the Windows Server 2012 to a Domain Controller, and created the Active Directory configurations, even enabled the Print Services.  After doing all of that, the HP printer will not print anything.  It's like all print
requests directly from the Windows Server go to Nil.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this before? The only thing I can think of is that after perhaps something affected printing directly once we promoted the server to being a DC, and added other features / roles.  I even tried installing the
HP drivers for Windows Server 2008 R2, and the results are still the same...nothing prints.  Trust me, the printer is set as the Default Printer and even when choosing to print, we make sure the HP OfficeJet Pro is selected, and is on, as other Windows
Client PC's can print to it directly.
Does anyone have any suggestions we could try?  Thanks in advance.

While it is quite a while since this was posted - I can concur a similar issue exists.
We have spent the better part of a day trying to work out why other HP printers work fine but our 8620 prints are not printing and going to Nil.  The print server is hosted on a shared DC.  Comparing to the initial posters details, for some reason
it seems to be most commonly related to the OfficeJet Pro 8600/8610/8620/8630 series printers.
I ended up doing a print server migration from the domain controller to stand alone host and all printers now work from a single server rather than a mix.  Domain controller OSes varied from 2008, 2012, 2012 R2 (tested with multiple) and only after
all of those failed then tried a stand alone server os machine as a last resort which worked fine.  Printing directly from Win 7 / 8 /8.1 clients to the IP always worked.

  • Downgrade of Windows 2012 r2 to Windows 2012 Domain Service Active Directory

I have an uncertainty. we used adprep /forest and adprep /domain tools on windows 2012 R2 to update the domain active directory. But after promoting a domain controller to windows 2012 R2, we realized that a tool we use to authenticate computer account not
supported for domain controllers in Windows 2012 R2. Here comes the question, I can to install direct and promote a domain controller windows 2012 without running the adprep /forest and adprep /domain tools of Windows 2012?.

as others mentioned there is no problem to promote a Windows Server 2012 into the domain as the functional level is fine for this.

  • What is the effect if I Raise my domain functional level to Windows Server 2012 R2 ?

    Hi,
    my current servers:
Domain Controllers= Windows Server 2012 R2 (current domain functional level is windows 2008 R2)
    Mail servers= Exchange 2010 SP3 on Windows 2008 R2
    Lync= Lync 2010 on Windows server 2008 R2
What is the effect if I Raise my domain functional level to Windows Server 2012 R2 ?
I am very worried about Exchange & Lync if we do this action
    please advice

Do not raise the forest functional level higher if you have or will have any domain controllers running
an earlier version of Windows Server , which is (windows Nt4.0,  Window 2000 or windows 2003)
but as a matter of fact I dont see any of those in your network so you can easily upgrade the funtional level without any issues

  • ProClarity 6.3 PAS install fails on Windows Server 2012

We are trying to install PAS 6.3 on Windows Server 2012 and the install fails with the following error
    The following requirements are missing:
    Windows Server 2003 SP1
We have successfully installed on Windows Server 2008 R2, so it really isn't a Windows Server 2003 SP1 issue.
Has anyone successfully installed on Windows Server 2012?  Is there a way to force the installer not to check for the OS?
    Thanks.
    Kevin

I have a PAS server running in Windows 2012, by doing exactly the same pre-requisites  that you do in Windows 2008 r2 (iis, Framework, SQL ADO 2005 / 2008). With the Windows Server 2003 SP1 message you can avoid it by doing a really simple thing that
is right click the setup file --> properties, and head to the "Compatibility Tab" and run it with compatibility mode Windows 7, also run it with Admin permissions. This let you pass by the message and let you install the product.  Remember, after  the
installation, you need to check all the IIS config, folder permissions, that you did in Windows 2008 x64  installation. Also, the App pool needs to work with .NET 2.0 not 4.0.
    Good luck!

  • Web Access for Remote Desktop on Windows Server 2012

    Hello,
i've a Windows Server 2012 without a domain. So i installed the remote desktop session host, the remote desktop license server and the remote desktop gateway as a server role only. All is working fine. Without a domain, no management tools for remote
desktop are available. So i configure the remote desktop via the registry. I define (via registry) some remoteapps, too. All values are copied from a running Windows Server 2008 R2. So the remoteapps are runing.
Now i want to use the new Microsoft Remote Desktop client for Android. To use a remoteapp i must define a remote resource. To define a remote resource i need a url to the web access for remote desktop. So i installed the web access. But if i login to the
web access, i don't see any remoteapp. What's wrong? I've set the ShowInTSWA to 1. What must i do to access an existing remoteapp via web access?
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
Server 2012 RD Web Access is designed to retrieve published RemoteApps and Desktops from a Server 2012 RD Connection Broker and/or a Server 2008 R2 RD Session Host server.  From your description it doesn't appear that you are using either of the above.
I know it is a more complicated set up, but you should consider having a domain, creating a RDS deployment, etc., so that you can use the full featureset as it was intended.  You can do it all on a single server if needed.  For Server 2012
there is a hotfix that needs to be applied to permit RD Connection Broker to work on the same server instance as active directory.
