Wiring NPN, Sinking, Open collector Limit Sensors

I have a NI-Motion Controller (NI-PCI-7342) connected to a third part drive/motor. The End of Travel Sensors are NPN, Sinking, Open collector, Normally Closed, and the home sensor is similar only Normally Open. I want to wire these into the UMI-7764. The Manual for the Linear Table states:
Limit Sensor / Home Sensor Electrical Connections
LIMIT/HOME WIRING COLORS
+VDC - Brown
Ground - Blue
Signal - Black
I believe the +VDC (Brown) and the Ground (Blue) get connected to a 5V Power source. That leaves me the Signal (Black). Do I wire this into the corresponding Limit Switch locations in the UMI?
Thanks in Advance.

Nick,
If your limit switches are sinking, you would need to have the "signal" wire connected to the limit input - which would sink the signal to ground.
The limit inputs have pullup resistor to pull them high - so if nothing is connected to the limit input, the signal will be high. A switch is used to pull it low by sinking to ground.
If your limit switches are normally closed, you will have to set the polarity in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) to active-high - since the signal is always pulled low until the limit is reached which will open the circuit and cause the line to be pulled high by the pullup resistors. In this case, a high signal = active.
If the home switch is normally open, then polarity in MAX would be active-low.
See the UMI-7764 Users Guide figure 7 (page 8) for Limit and Home switch connection
Hopefully that explains the connections better.

  • Open collector Incremental encoder

So I have this TRD SH1000 BD Incremental Encoder which I am trying to connect to the NI 9411. Can I connect it with differential type terminal configuration?
    http://www.automationdirect.com/static/specs/encoderld.pdf
This is the manual for reference.

    Buechsenschuetz a écrit :
Open-collector outputs and differential outputs are different things....
Since you have open-collector outputs on your encoders only (never heard of encoders having both), you should connect them in single-ended configuration to your DAC board. To work properly with an open-collector output, the inputs of the DAC board must have pull-up resistors. In most cases these resistors are already on-board, check the manual of your DAC board for details.
The wiring between your encoder and the board should not be too long since single-ended inputs and non-differential signal lines are prone to environmental noise. If possible, use shielded cables with the shield connected to digital input ground (DGND) on the DAC board.
I guess you mean DAQ board...

  • Stepper Pulse Voltage Level in Open Collector

I am using the PXI-7344 Motion Controller to drive three stepper motors and 5 servos. I am running into unexpected problems with PXI-7344 Motion Controllers to drive stepper motors.
Steppers are configured as CW & CCW and open loop.
At first,I started with two PXI-7344 Motion Controller for 8 axes control.
But two axes stepper control with two axes servo on a one PXI-7344 gave a problem that one of stepper axis speed was faster than a given command speed on a certain moment during all four axes were running simultaneously. In spite of new firmware upgrade, that problem could not be fixed.
So now I am using three PXI-7344 Motion Controllers for 8 axes.
The second problem is the output voltage level of stepper pulse.
    PXI
-7344 Motion Controllers and stepper amplifiers are interfaced with "open collector".
Stepper amplifiers are driven with +24Volts and +24Volts is supplied from stepper amplifiers.
As hooked up to a scope to monitor, stepper amplifiers are working correctly as the output voltage level of stepper pulse over +15V for a rise but incorrect as below +15V causing fast speed and more pule move than the given command.
The problem is that the pulse voltage level is not uniform for axes on PXI-7344 Motion Controllers. For an instance,Axis one always gives +15V pulses but other axes are not. And other PXI-7344 Motion Controller's axes always gives only around +13V level pulses even if it is new one.
So it could not be replaced with other one except that gives +15V level pulses.
Why does such strange thing happen?
And how could that problem be fixed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

    Choe.
The stepper outputs on the PXI-7344 Motion Controllers output TTL pulses ranging from 0 to 5 volts. I'm a bit confused by your explaination that the "PXI-7344 Motion Controller's axes always give only around +13V level pulses." Does this mean that the 7344 is outputting 13 volts, or is this the output of the stepper motor amplifier? Also the voltage level of each pulse should never effect speed, just torque.
I recommend going to www.ni.com/ask and contacting one of our NI-Motion specialists. That may provide a better forum for getting to the heart of your odd behavior.

  • Error when trying to use DO as "open collector" on PXI-6602

When I try to configure a DO of my PXI-6602 as "open collector" I receive the error -200452 ("Measurements: Specified property is not supported by the device or is not applicable to the task."). This is completely mysterious to me since the PXI-6602 should have this feature and my code (see attachment) is practically identical to any of the numerous examples for this topic. Am I overlooking anything really stupid? (LV 8.5, PXI-8145RT) Cheers, uli

    Hi uli,
Did you try setting DO.Tristate while the task is running? There are a few DAQmx devices that do not support setting DO.Tristate while the task is running, but I don't think that the PXI-6602 is among them. I don't have an actual 6602 installed but with a simulated PXI-6602 and DAQmx 8.9, setting DO.Tristate while the task is running does not error.
Using external hardware is perfectly fine, and should also work for timing I/O (whereas using DO.Tristate would only work for single-point digital I/O).
I don't see the text that you quoted in the NI 660x Specifications, so I don't know what context it was in, and apparently it has been reworded since then. Note that devices that support open collector output say "open collector (open-drain)" in their specifications; for an example, see the NI USB-6008/6009 User Guide and Specifications.

  • Open file limit in limits.conf not being enforced

So I am running a Arch installation without a graphical UI and Im running elasticsearch on it as its own user (elasticsearch). Since elasticsearch needs to be able to handle more than the 4066 files that seems to the be the default, I edit /etc/security/limits.conf
    #* soft core 0
    #* hard rss 10000
    #@student hard nproc 20
    #@faculty soft nproc 20
    #@faculty hard nproc 50
    #ftp hard nproc 0
    #@student - maxlogins 4
    elasticsearch soft nofile 65000
    elasticsearch hard nofile 65000
    * - rtprio 0
    * - nice 0
    @audio - rtprio 65
    @audio - nice -10
    @audio - memlock 40000
I restart the system, but the limit is seemingly still 4066. What gives? I read on the wiki that in order to enforce the values you need a pam enabled login. I dont have a graphical login manager and
    grep pam_limits.so /etc/pam.d/*
    Gives me this..
    /etc/pam.d/crond:session required pam_limits.so
    /etc/pam.d/polkit-1:session required pam_limits.so
    /etc/pam.d/su:session required pam_limits.so
    /etc/pam.d/system-auth:session required pam_limits.so
    /etc/pam.d/system-services:session required pam_limits.so
Any ideas on what I have to do to raise the open file limit here?
    Thanks

Seems like adding the LimitNOFILE parameter to the systemd service file did the trick, but still doesnt explain why limits.conf isnt being enforced.

  • Error in model LM293D - open collector property of output not implemented?

The comparator LM293D has an open collector output according to the datasheet.
I attempt to use that property to create a delay in the positive going response.
However, the output in the model goes hi without the external pull-up resistor that is required according to the datasheet and does not delay when attaching even a large capacitor to the minus rail.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Set Digital Out as Open Collector in NI MAX

I am not sure where the best place for this post should go since there isn't a NI MAX Board:
Is there a way to set a digital out as an open collector (assuming device supported) through NI MAX?  Via Global Channels/Tasks/Device Config?  I am currently using the USB-6001, but see no way of performing this in MAX.   I know there is the ability to do it via a channel property node within Labview (http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/D9B4018C3E540CE4862570F30068C0DB)
If there is no way to do this, could this be a possible future feature (along with the ability to change other properties via MAX)?

It doesn't really matter either way, but it would be convinient to be able to change more settings through MAX so you don't have add it to every piece of LV code you may use.  I do understand that it make sense to require this kind of setup on a program to program basis, since developers do use the same piece of equipment for multiple products/applications and trying to keep track of what the settings in MAX are could be a huge PITA.

  • System Check error : Actual open files limit:7000, needed 8000 nodes:

    Hi,
System check showing up error 'Actual open files limit:7000, needed 8000 nodes:' in our BIA system.

  • Open In limit

There seems to be a limit to the number of apps you can select to open a specific file in using the "Open In" functionality - it seems to be 10. For example, if you have over 10 apps on the iphone that will open PDF files, the menu will only pick 10 that you can use to select from using Open In. I was trying to find some info about this and whether there is a way you can pick which 10 you want to use or have in the list? I am finding apps I would never use to open a PDF are coming up in the list and I don't want to delete these apps as I use them for other things. Any help appreciated.

Here's hoping someone gets back to this question. The iPad has become nearly unusable in a fleet of enterprise customers because of this.
Another way to word the problem: Multiple (way over 10) apps now open pdf files. if we view a pdf in safari and then want to "open in" ibooks or some other app, that option may not be available because of the 10 app limit in the "open in" dialogue. Apple should remove the 10 app limit and make this scrollable. I have hundreds of apps on my iPad and 10 is a laughably small number of apps to open pdfs. Here are a list of types of apps that I use that need to be able to open pdfs:
iBooks, e-signature apps, google docs apps, pdf annotation apps, pdf signature apps, travel apps
I did a count and I personally have over 25 of these apps that open pdfs. Therefore limiting the list to 10 is simply unacceptable for business customers & power users alike. PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE!

  • Fan Runs With Case Open Bad Heat Sensor?

I have an HP Pavilion 670y. I have a fan that runs for long periods of time and then stops and then starts again.  I decided to run my computer with the case open to make sure which fan was running before buying a new power supply if it was that fan.  Found it was the lower fan. The fan has less stops and starts with the case open but still has periods where it runs for a few minutes and then stops and starts.  Since I have the case open I can't see how the computer could be overhaeting.  Could it be a bad heat sensor?  If it is can the heat sensor be replaced or is it hardwired?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The HP support does not find a PC with that model number, however, units with a number of that nature of number are usually older units.
It is not clear as to what fan is considered the "lower fan".  The case fan may do as indicated, but a fan on the CPU or video card do not normally cycle.  Maybe include a picture? Click on the tree icon next to the chain "link" or ladder "video" icon to post a picture.

  • Wiring RS in NI9237 into bridge sensors

    Hello
Page 8 in the Opearting Instructions of NI 9237 Module say the following ''When you connect a full bridge, you must connect the AI+ and
AI–, EX+ and EX–, and RS+ and RS– signals. But The sensor that I want to use is the following sensor from Omega:
PX309-200GV It comes attached to a cable as in the picture below.
The type that I want to use is the mv/v type because it is bridge type which I want to use.
If you look to the specifications cataloge of this sensor  (specifically look to the wiring method), see pictures below
you can see that the sensor hase four wires (two for Excitation and TWO for AI) but I dont see any wires for RS.
Am I still able to use this sensor? I want to add that the NI9237 module will be connected to Compact DAQ 9184 Ethernet chassis
    Please help

    Yes.
Connect the Output leads to AI+ and - and to RS+ and - at the same time.
RS is Remote Sense which can give increased accuracy for devices that have 6 wires.  The remote sense wires are in parallel to the output wires, so you basically just need to wire the analog inputs in parallel to the remote sense inputs.

  • Report exceeded opened cursors limit

    Hello everyone,
I'm building this report using ref cursors. I've following the steps in "Oracle 9i building reports" document.
My report has 2 ref cursors with a data link between them.
I'm suposing that a cursor is opened once for the main query and then another cursor is opened for each record of the main query in order to fetch joined results. Am i right?
So if the first query return 5000 records the report will open 5001 cursors wich throws ORA-01000 :(
Is there any way to configure the report to close each cursor after it's no longer needed?
    Thanks in advance.
    DAniel

    Hi,
    Thanks again for your interest.
That syntax is not allowed at Reports Builder SQL Query resource. Well, at least not with the & characters.
I think I've worked around it.
I built this function (eg. get_data_table) that returns data as a table type, let's say "t_foo"
Then, in my query i wrote:
    select a.something, a.something_else from table(get_data_table(:user_p));
user_p is an user parameter. get_data_table returns data from different tables concerning the "user_p" value.
    It's working so far :)
    Thanks,
    Daniel

Just a final question about Sleep mode - does this have any negative effects on the life or performance of the laptop? I'm so used to Shutting down the laptop each day that I worry about Sleep mode having some sort of drain on the components or something.
There are only two practical differences between Sleep and Shut Down:
    1. Sleep will wake instantly, so you don't have to wait for startup.
    2. Sleep will drain a new, fully charged battery after several days without being woken or plugged in. If you shut down, the battery charge lasts much longer. Obviously, if you only sleep it overnight, you'll still have plenty of battery left in the morning.
Don't sleep it more frequently than necessary, though. Frequently turning the backlight and hard drive off and on can shorten their life. Just do what's reasonable. I usually leave mine awake until I have to transport it in a bag, along with sleeping it overnight. On battery, I'll sleep it more often to preserve battery.

  • A stepper motor attached to PCI-7334 travels in same direction for both +/- input

Hi everyone, I'm seeing some bizarre behavior on my system and was hoping you could help me out.
I have the PCI-7334 stepper controller installed and running on my system, with 2 axis-s connected.
Axis 1 operates as expected, running one direction for a positive target, and the other for a negative target.
Axis 2 on the other hand, runs in the same direction regardless of if I give it a positive or negaative target position.
This seems to be  limited to axis 2, I connected the wires running from axis 1 on the connector block to the second motor driver and it then started to act as expected.
    Any idea whats going on?

Have you checked with a DMM or a scope if the Dir output is working fine? Maybe this behavior is caused by the wiring of the open collector outputs for step & direction. Maybe due to device tolerances the current driven by axis 2 for the Dir output is a little bit too low, so the drive doesn't recognize the changed level. Please refer to this link in our KB and check if the wiring hints apply to your setup.
A second option is a defective board. In this case please contact your local NI branch.
    Thanks,
    Jochen
