WLS 10.3 ClassCastException obtaining JDBC connection
I have a problem obtaining a JDBC connection in a java client application, using a WLS Datasource.
- I've configured a JDBC datasource in a WLS 10.3 instance, using the Oracle thin driver (not the XA version) - and have successfully targetted this to my server and tested the connection via the console.
- When viewing the JNDI Tree for the server, the Datasource is visible as expected.
However, when I attempt to use a simple client program to obtain a datasource and JDBC connection I get the following error :
java.lang.ClassCastException : weblogic.jdbc.common.internal.ConnectionEnv cannot be cast to java.io.Serializable
Debugging shows a datasource is obtained and that the ClassCastException is thrown when an attempt is made to get a connection from the datasource. Note this code has been used successfully for previous WLS versions to obtain and test a connection (WLS 8.1 - WLS 10) and follows the expected steps :
Hashtable<String, String> ht = new Hashtable<String, String>();
ht.put( Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory" );
ht.put( Context.PROVIDER_URL, "t3://localhost:7001");
javax.naming.Context ctx = new InitialContext( ht );
ds = (javax.sql.DataSource) ctx.lookup( pDataSourceName );
Connection con = ds.getConnection();
The client app has the following Jars on the classpath :
wlclient.jar
jdk1.6.0_07 runtime jar
The client code has been built using jdk1.6.0_07
i) Can you confirm if any additional libraries are required on the classpath
ii) Please indicate if there are any special steps required to obtain a JDBC connection in WLS 10.3
Thanks for your help.

In a Java client the HashTable properties are required to be set.
Context ctx = null;
Hashtable ht = new Hashtable();
ht.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,
"weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory");
ht.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "t3://localhost:7001");
try { ctx = new InitialContext(ht);
// Use the context in your program }
catch (NamingException e) { // a failure occurred }
finally { try {ctx.close();} catch (Exception e)
{ // a failure occurred } }Edited by: dvohra16 on Dec 10, 2009 5:39 PM

SecurityException: "Reserve" errors when obtaining jdbc connections
Hi,
We've seen an interesting issue come up with Weblogic 6.1 SP3. Not sure why this
is happening now.
I am using the MBean approach to creating Connection Pools dynamically. This still
works. The main thing I had to change for SP3 was to add a user/password when
I grab the Admin MBean. So this is all working fine.
The problem I get is when I try to make a connection. I end up getting a Pool
connect failed: java.lang.SecurityException: User "guest" does not have Per
mission "reserve" based on ACL "dynaPool". There were two ways I saw to solve
this, and I was wondering which was the best.
1) Add an acl that looks like "acl.reserve.dynaPool=everyone", and that seems
to work.
2) User the Driver.connect(String url, Properties aProps) where I include a "user"
and "password" key for the properties file. I use the same user/password that
I used to grab the Admin MBean. Problem is, I can't find any doc on this, or why
it works. Maybe you can enlighten me on why this works.
Anyway, I was curious on why 2) works, as well as which approach is the recommended.
We didn't see this reserve error until we tried to utilize SP3. Thanks in advance
for your assistance.
Michael DolbearHi Michael,
When there is no user provided, user "guest" is used.
AFAIR in SP2 in ACL was not defined on a pool, this effectively
allowed making connection to everyone, including guest.
I haven't worked on SP3, but it looks like the approach changed.
Speaking about the preferable way of making a connection,
the second one is better as the principal is clearly specified.
The first method can be harmful from security point of
view.
Hope it helps,

Hi Slava,
1) Getting the connection:
Properties tempProperties = new Properties();
tempProperties.setProperty(USER,
aUserName);
tempProperties.setProperty(PASSWORD,
aPassword);
tempDriver =(Driver)Class.forName(this.getJDBCDriverClassName()).newInstance();
tempConnection = tempDriver.connect(this.getJDBCDriverURL(),
aProperties);
2) My test case deletes the connection pool after its done, but
the main things to be know are
that I am using the weblogic.jdbc.jts.Driver and the url is
"jdbc:weblogic:jts:someName".
If that's not enough, I will get you the definition. The connection poolruns
on top of a two tier driver that is the Oracle thin driver.
3)Here is the stack trace. The is no weblogoic code in it (just ours), soI don't
think it will tell you much other than the message:

ShankarI agree with the previous post.
Here are some of my previous posts that might help. As a general rule, an a MVC design, your JDBC objects (connection, resultSet, preparedStatement) should not be exposed outside of the database layer.

Obtaining an oracle.sql.STRUCT through a pooled JDBC connection
Hello,
I am using WebLogic Server 10 and and Oracle 10 and I am trying to obtain a vendor-specific oracle.sql.STRUCT from a ResultSet using a pooled connection defined in Weblogic. I need the vendor-specific object, rather than simply the java.sql.Struct implementation, because a third party library requires it.
What gets returned in the ResultSet is a non-exposed WebLogic wrapper object which implements java.sql.Struct, but which cannot be cast to an oracle.sql.STRUCT. I can use reflection on this object to find and call the getVendorObj() method to obtain the oracle.sql.STRUCT, but this solution is not acceptable because this is not a published API and is not guaranteed not to change in future versions.
How can I reliably obtain a vendor-specific implementation of java.sql.Struct through a WebLogic connection pool in WebLogic Server 10?
Thanks for any advice,

Joe,
Thanks again. With your guidance, I have arrived at the following approach, which I'll post for the benefit of others, and which I'd be thankful if you would validate:
1) Import the jar com.bea.core.datasource-1.0.0.0.jar from %BEA_HOME%\modules, which is the only location of the class WLConnection, which is the only class with the getVendorConnection() method you refer to.
2) Get the logical connection from the pooled data source, cast it to a WLConnection, call getVendorConnection() to obtain an OracleConnection (from the ojdbc jar), and use this connection to obtain the required oracle.sql.STRUCT from an OracleResultSet.
3) Be aware of the limitations and follow the guidelines in the document http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/jdbc/thirdparty.html#1043646 regarding security, error handling, releasing resources (close only the logical connection), etc.
Does this sound like the approach you had in mind?
Thanks again,

Thank you for the information about the connection being closed.
I will look into using this configuration setting.
You say that you can describe a way to get a handle on an unwrapped
pool object using some documented WLS-specific code. Are you referring
here to the getVendorConnection() method?yes.
This method does not help me
get the oracle.sql.STRUCT object, because even the connection returned
by getVendorConnection() returns a wrapped WL java.sql.Struct object
from a call to getObject().I don't believe it. If you are running in WLS, with a local pool,
the getVendorConnection() will give you the Oracle connection,
which will give you an Oracle statement, etc, down to an oracle
STRUCT object. Once you have a direct reference to the oracle connection,
we're not in the picture when it returns something to you.
It would be great if getVendorObj() were
documented and could be counted on in future versions. To use this
method, one would still have to access it via Java reflection, because
the wrapper class and its getVendorObj() method would be exposed in an
API, correct? Could this method be exposed in the API, so that reflection
doesn't need to be used, or it is exposed somewhere that isn't documented?getVendorObj() is not yet exposed or therefore supported for the general
wrapped object, so you would have to start from the connection and
derive all subobjects from it.
Thanks again,

Hello,
I am using WebLogic Server 10 and and Oracle 10 and I am trying to obtain a
vendor-specific oracle.sql.STRUCT from a ResultSet using a pooled connection
defined in Weblogic. I need the vendor-specific object, rather than simply
the java.sql.Struct implementation, because a third party library requires it.
What gets returned in the ResultSet is a non-exposed WebLogic wrapper object
which implements java.sql.Struct, but which cannot be cast to an oracle.sql.STRUCT.
I can use reflection on this object to find and call the getVendorObj() method to
obtain the oracle.sql.STRUCT, but this solution is not acceptable because this is
not a published API and is not guaranteed not to change in future versions.Understood. We all benefit from sticking to the J2EE standards,
but we could also wish Oracle had done so with it's driver objects.
I will assume your code is running in the WebLogic server, because
an external JVM can never access the real driver object, which will
always really be in the WLS JVM. No active JDBC object is serializable.
How can I reliably obtain a vendor-specific implementation of java.sql.Struct
through a WebLogic connection pool in WebLogic Server 10?There is no way to get a handle on an unwrapped pool object without using some
WLS-specific code, though I can describe a way with documented methods,
and/or I can get our documentation altered to say we'll support the
getVendorObj() method. We introspect every vendor object, and for those
implementations that have done the wise thing, projecting any non-standard
methods as an Interface, we are able to also project that Interface so
the vndor example code should work. However, in some poorly-done
cases, such as for some Oracle stuff, there is either no Interface,
or the Oracle code has extensions that take java.sql objects as input,
(at least that's the signature of the method) but two lines into the
method, the Oracle code assumes and casts the java.sql object to a concrete
Oracle object. In these use cases you need the direct unwrapped object.
We provide and document Connection.getVendorConnection(), and intend
getVendorObj() to serve the same for subobjects, but note the dangers
and responsibilities: We rely on our wrappers to implement the security
and thread-safety of our pooling system. Because user code can get
unrestricted access to the actual connection from most JDBC objects,
we can never trust that we have complete control once a vendor object
is exposed. Therefore, by default we will close and replace every JDBC
connection so exposed, as soon as the current thread is finished with
the pool connection. This hurts performance. We also document a pool
config setting that will tell us that you take responsibility for any such
problems, and not to close connections just because they've been exposed.
HTH,
Joe

WLS 10.0 JDBC connection pool shrink not working
We seem to be having a problem with jdbc connection pools not shrinking. In the connection pool properties in the WLS console we have:
Initial Capacity 4
Maximum Capacity 15
Shrink Frequency 900
However when I look at the underlying xml config file (see below) the last two values above are not present in the config!
Any ideas what is going on here?
thankyou,

When I execute this code with the weblogic.jar in the classpath everything works fine. However, when I put the wlfullclient.jar in the classpath which I created using the JAR Builder Tool I get the follwoing error:

Can please anyone tell me what's going on there? What really astonishes me is that the class mentioned in the stacktrace is neither present in the wlfullclient.jar nor in the weblogic.jar, but using the weblogic.jar everything works fine. Any hint would be appreciated so much ...
Here is the log written when is created the wlfullclient.jar:

Hi. You should open an official support case,
but it may be that we do not support
external client JDBC with the client jar.Actually, I misspoke. I think we do supply a client
jar, and that may be true
what I said, but I see you're making your own. Can
you find out what jar you're
loading the InstrumentationSupport class from? That's
the original location of
the error, and that class doesn't exist in 10.0.Hi Joe, thanks for your reply.
First of all, let me clarify what we did and why we did it: We have a stand-alone client application that needs to communicate with a Weblogic server using the t3 protocol (we don't want IIOP or HTTP tunneling). According to the official BEA documentation (see http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs100/client/basics.html and http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs100/client/t3.html) we needed to create the wlfullclient.jar file. We did this using the Weblogic JAR Builder Tool (see http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs100/client/jarbuilder.html). Unfortunatley we discovered the problem mentioned in my original post when we tried to run the client with that wlfullclient.jar.
Regarding your classloading question: The InstrumentationSupportImpl class is located in the wlfullclient.jar, so it does exist in WLS 10.0 (it is also contained in the weblogic.jar). Unfortunately this JAR does not contain the required class "weblogic.diagnostics.instrumentation.InstrumentationDebug". I searched for this class and found it in the OSGI module "com.bea.core.diagnostics.instrumentor_1.0.1.0.jar" shipped with the Weblogic server. Obviously the JAR Builder Tool did not include the contents of this OSGI bundle into the wlfullclient.jar. I tried to include this OSGI bundle into the classpath of the client app manually (just for testing purposes), but this onyl resultet in another NoClassDefFoundError. This time the class "com.bea.objectweb.asm.Constants" could not be found.
What astonishes me is the fact that the connection retrieval works fine when we only have the weblogic.jar in the client applications classpath, but fails when we have the wlfullclient.jar in the classpaht. It seems that the t3 communication is handled completely different, depending on what JARs I have in the classpath. Also, JMS communication works fine in both cases (i.e. for the weblogic.jar and the wlfullclient.jar). The only thing that causes problems (at least as far as we have discovered) is getting a JDBC connection from a datasource. I simply fail to see why this is the case.
Best regards,
DirkInteresting. I hope the official support case solves your problem.
I would like to dig further, but it's too far afield for me with
the workload I have at the moment.

Jdbc connection leak problem in wls 8.1 sp1
Fellows!
I have problem finding a jdbc connection leak and hope to get some tips from
a som friendly person who has some experience about this.
The application contains some 100 classes and CMP beans.
All connections are fetched with datasource.getConnection and are realesed
in finally() immediately after the sql-query is done.
Except for the entity beans of course which has the transaction required
attribute set.
Any ideas much appreciated!
Best regards from the top of Europe - Luleå.
Here the first snow has been falling and thin ice has freezed on the gulf of
bothnia.

attribute set.Hi. I don't understand this last 'except'. All jdbc code in bean methods
should be defining a connection as a method variable, obtaining it from
a TxDataSource in a try block, used completely, and closed as the only/first
thing in the finally block. We will handle the close() correctly, it won't
hurt the tx if there is one, and it will do the right thing if there isn't one.
How do you know there's a leak? Usually our leak-detection shows where the connection
was made, so you can find out why it wasn't closed...

JBO-26061: Error while opening JDBC connection : ADF Related Problem?
I would like to ask whether there is an impact when you set the PS_TXN and PS_TXN_SEQ database objects for a ADF Application?(http://chrismuir.sys-con.com/node/1067419/mobile)
The Datasources are all good when tested in the admin server for connectivity. The connection is somewhat intermittent.
I’m seeing this error in the logs:

I checked OS tcp_syn_retries, is 5, an exception should be raised after 180 seconds, isnt?
Even more weird is that sometimes a entityManager.find() give us null object even if the database record of the sougth persisted object exists.
It seems that we have a network problem here but WLS / JVM is not throwing exceptions so we cant show to network administrators this problem.
Our Weblogic is version 10.3.4 running on Redhat 5 with kernel 2.63.18-194.e15.
JDK reports itself as "Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode)".
We have the exact replica of the faulty server (hardware and configuration) running the same application in the same domain connected to the same network switch connecting to the same Oracle instance but in that server we haven't suffer such problem.

I'd check in tools->embedded oc4j server preferences (current workspace app / data sources) and do a refresh now.
Next, make sure your app module config files reference the right connection by right clicking the app module and selecting configuration. lastly, make sure the project points to the right database connection by right clicking project -> properties, business components. -
One of our customers starts to encounter this error message recently.
We checked our log files. It seems that the error happens when
to obtain a jdbc connection. Have anyone seen similar problems
and knows how to fix it? thanks in advance.
We are using weblogic server 6.1sp2, and weblogic sql type 4 driver.
The functions that invoke the jdbc calls are stateless session bean
methods with their transaction attributes marked as Required.
There is no nested calls of these methods.

Joe,
We got the exact same error message. The error came after we got theJDBC connection,
and trying to create statement off it.
It occurs intermitently when we are running another standalone JAVAapp to do
some end of day work, which results in the DB Server being very busy(90+%CPU
usage) for about 5 minutes. We see a surge of requests to the WLSJDBC Connection
pool. This would sometimes result in all our subsequent DB requeststo fail and
lead to a crash.
We are using WLS6.0SP1. I do not think there's a 30 seconds wait leadingto a
connection timeout that caused this(rather it is the end effect).
Can you give us a more detailed explanation? Is there a miscommunicationbetween
our DB(Sybase12) and WLS?Hi. It looks to you like it's after you get the connection, but really
it's when the server is
gettng the pool connection. For performance/synchronization reasons we
do a clever
delay: When your code asks for a pool connection we quickly give you
the pool wrapper,
but we delay actually reserving the real underlying DBMS connection until
your first
real need for a connection, at your first JDBC call, such as createStatement()
etc.
It is while waiting for a pool connection long enough for the transaction
coordinator
to have timed you out before you ever get a chance. It's nothing to do
with the
DBMS or even JDBC, I believe. I think the weblogic server either has
too few execute-threads
and/or too few CPU cycles to do the work load.
Okay, so there's a lazy initialization of the connection.
From reading our log I believe our failur is immediate rather
than waiting for 30+ seconds(the default setting) from the DB,
the timeout occurred later as a result. At the time either because the DB Server
is very busy.
Since we are running WLS6.0 we have only one connection pool,
we have defined a max of 150 threads in the pool. While this
is happening the DB Server is being pinned by an overnight job,
but the WLS Server is not busy at all. The DB and WLS resides
on different physical boxes.
We also have a thread dump from the WLS console when we rebooted the server, it
showed that we are hanging on to the thread & jdbc
connections after these exceptions has occurred instead of releasing them, note
"16083"(~4.5 hours) seconds has passed:
142 116222 Retry rollback request for tx: 'transaction=(IdHash=2963855,Name =
[EJB UserManagerBeanImpl.signalICUserServletHeartBeat()],Xid=30643:8f3838f3709bf53d,Status=Rolling
Back. [Reason = Unknown],numRepliesOwedMe=0,numRepliesOwedOthers=0,seconds since
begin=16083,seconds left=10,ServerResourceInfo[weblogic.jdbc.jts.Connection]=(state=started,assigned=server),SCInfo[server]=(state=active),properties=({weblogic.jdbc=t3://159.55.158.25:8005,
weblogic.transaction.name=[EJB UserManagerBeanImpl.signalICUserServletHeartBeat()]}))'
Scheduled Trigger
So I would argue this problem actually chewed up resources on the WLS server.

at weblogic.jdbc.jts.Connection.getOrCreateConnection(Connection.java:586)Hi. This sounds like a JVM thread starvation issue, and/or a server
load
issue. What is
happening is that the transaction is started, and times out beforethe
SSB even gets to

Multiple JDBC connection pools
Hi
I have WLI application ( 7.0 ) and another J2EE appliction configured on WLS (
7.0 ). If I have multiple jdbc connection pools configured to access different
( or even the same ) databases, I am unable to get the connection to execute a
sql query in the J2EE app. The connection pool gets initialized properly during
the server startup and I can see them in the console but when I try to acquire
a connection from the pool for execution of a jdbc stmt, I am unable to obtain
a connection. Did any one succeed in configuring mulitple jdbc connection pools
and WLI and another J2EE app to run together on WLS 7.0? Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks
SreeramWell ... It boiled down to ACLs.

execute a
sql query in the J2EE app. The connection pool gets initialized properly
during
the server startup and I can see them in the console but when I try to
acquire
a connection from the pool for execution of a jdbc stmt, I am unable
to obtain
a connection. Did any one succeed in configuring mulitple jdbc connection
pools
and WLI and another J2EE app to run together on WLS 7.0? Any suggestions
are welcome.
Thanks

Failed to obtain/create connection from connection pool after redeploy
I have a web application (.war) that uses a jdbc connection pool. The application works fine, however after I redeploy it using the administration console I get "Failed to obtain/create connection from connection pool [ Datavision_Pool ]. Reason : null" followed by "Error allocating connection : [Error in allocating a connection. Cause: null]" from javax.enterprise.resource.resourceadapter and I am forced to restart the instance. I am running Sun Java System Application Server 9.1 (build b58g-fcs)
using a connection pool to a Microsoft SQL 2000 database using inet software's JDBC drivers. I need to be able to redeploy applications without having to restart the instance. Any help is appreciated.I have turned on some additional diagnostics and found out some answers and a work-around, but I think that there may be a bug in the way JDBC connection pool classes are loaded. The actual error was a null pointer in the JDBC driver class in the perpareStatement method. The only line in this method is "return factory.createPreparedStatement( this , sql );" and the only possible NPE would be if the factory was null, which should be impossible because it is a static variable and it is initialized when the class is loaded. The problem occurs because we deploy the JDBC driver .jar file within our .war file, for use when a client doesn't have or want to use connection pooling. Apparently, the connection pool must have picked up some of these classes and when the .war was redeployed, the reference to the factory was lost for existing connections (not sure how). If I remove the JDBC .jar file from the .war, it works, but that wasn't an ideal solution, the other way to get it to work was to change the sun-web.xml file to have <class-loader delegate="true">. We previously had it set to false in version 8.1 because of interference with a different version of the apache Tiles classes, which has now been addressed in version 9.1.
I still think there is an issue, because the connection pool should never use the application specific classloaders. Am I wrong to believe this? -
