Won't let me apply effects

Everything in iMovie HD 6 seems to work fine apart from not being able to apply effects. I've tried most of the effects. I have no problems changing settings. It even renders or looks like it's rendering but nothing changes with the clip. It's the same as it was before.
Can anyone help?

same thing.
had my imac harddrive replaced and now the quartz composer effects dont work. I've been researching for the past 3 hours. Does anyone have the answer to this.
I'm led to believe it has to do with not having the latest codecs? or something is off with my quartz composer (tho i see it renderin in preview) or this is just a bug that no one has the answer to.
won't somebody help georgieporge and I?

    Tried to apply for my sainsburys voucher after BT infiniity was installed.  Asks for order number or VOL number from my emails. The order number says it should start with 7 and 11 letters but the only order number I have is alot longer than that and there is no VOL number stated.  I have filled in the form that I am having difficulty but no email or anything to say anyone is looking into it for me.

  • Why does the default theme for firefox 4 only work with add-ons such as personas? It will allow me to preview an alternative theme with a persona but won't let me apply it without switching to the default. No option for disabled and visually impaired.

    Firefox 4 will no longer allow me to use a theme (other than the default) with a Persona. When I "try on" a skin, FF4 allows me to ''preview'' the theme with the persona but will not allow me to ''apply'' the persona without '''automatically''' switching my chosen theme (disorganizing my menu's, bookmarks, and tool-bars) back to the default. Firefox 4 also begins to load an all-default setting browser when it is first opened slowing my browsing start up. All issues were not experienced before the Mozilla Firefox 4.0 upgrade.

    Hi David,
    Thank you for your detailed question. It sounds like the real issue is pdf files. Are there any antivirus/firewalls that might be blocking this specific file type? or are there any preferences in your control panel that might be blocking this?
    Do you have any stored preferences for PDF files in Firefox?

  • Won't let me edit effects - can ONLY use presets :(

    Recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, all was fine until a couple days ago.
    When I go to the "edit" panel to put effects on a track (both audio and MIDI tracks), I can select the effect I want, and I can also pick from any of the presets. However when I click on the picture BESIDE the effect - the one that is supposed to open up a box so I can edit the effect - nothing happens. It does not matter if the effect is turned on or not. Also does not matter if it is a new Garageband file or one that I created and added EDITED effects to months ago - nothing happens.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated (my brother has several songs that need recorded for school projects and I was hoping I'd be able to help him out). Thanks in advance!

    That sounds very odd, so you should first try the oddball fixes:

  • Has anyone had any trouble with the Move tool in Photoshop (v14.2.1)? I'm getting a dimmed bounding box akin to the transform bounding box, but this one won't let me apply or escape.

    Having trouble suddenly with the Move tool creating a bounding box that wont let me release it by any means. It remains there no matter what, and now I'm having trouble using the Paste Into command.

    Are you trying to move a background layer by any chance or a layer that is partially locked?? If you have show bounding checked in the option bar you should see the bounding box.

  • IMovie HD won't let me apply transitions...what do I need to do?

    Hi I'm a new user to iMovie (5.02), and for some reason I can preview the different Transitions but not apply them. Both the Update and Apply buttons are faded out. Can someone help me?

    Hi czboogie - I guess what you figured was to drag the small blue 'T' down to the place you wanted to inset the transition? Same goes for titles. Update is used to edit an existing transition, and Apply is used if you want to insert several transitions at the same time - by highlighting a group of clips first.
    Yes, the instructions are not all that they should be - sometimes a bit hard to find. In fact Apple appears to have totally removed the helpful video tutorials for imovie HD - nothing surprises me about Apple's treatment of loyal customers any more.

  • FCP 7 won't let me save changes to effect default settings

    Hey all - using FCP 7,0,3 and it will let me make a change to an individual effects default settings, but it won't let me save a new default - i.e.; I'm trying to change the length of disolves because I don't want full 1 second transitions, ever.  I can add the transition and change that one, but FCP doesn't remember this preference and makes me do it all over again whenever I use the transition.  My FCP is very buggy!

    Are you using the correct method to make a new default transition?
    If, for example, you want to make a 10 frame dissolve as your default, 1st place a default dissolve on the timeline:
    Then change it to 10 frames duration:
    Then click on that dissolve in the timeline to select it, and drag it to the FCP browser:
    And let go. Then Control-click on the effect in the browser and from the drop down menu choose "Set Default Transition"
    Once you have done that, your 10 frame dissolve will the effect applied when you apply the default transition.

  • Why After Effects CC won´t let me import an .obj file as AE CS6?

    Why After Effects CC won´t let me import an .obj file as AE CS6? How could I solve this?
    Thanks.

    P.S. I have tried other effects including transitions and it still won't let me drag.

    Wow that was really quick, thank you so much.  Im not sure at all which version it was because i said it was around 4 years ago he bought it.  I know it isn't under his username, since he's a PC person (ugh) so i know its probably registered to one of our actual names.  isn't there some way to look it up since we did register it, because I'm not even sure where the disks are from when we bought it (we've moved a lot and also have two storage lockers, i know i would have kept it with other disks) but my cd rom drive is actually broken on my computer as well ( i think it got stepped on and is now squished and won't eject or run disks.)
    So is there anyway they can look up that its registered to one of our names since we did register it when we bought and installed it, or do i really have to find the disk with some sort of proof of purchase (i know there would be no receipt after all this time)
    either way, ill do what you suggested to the best of my abilities and thank you so much for answering my questions, i can't even open the program as its incompatible and find out the info from that) so I'm in a bit of a pickle and your response was so thorough and it didn't seem to be posted long enough to even write a well researched response, thanks, all the best,

  • InD4 - Won't let me put text up to the page edge - need to apply a header! Help!

    I am trying to put a text box at the top of my document to use as a header - something I've done hundreds of times before.  But, this time, when I add a text box, and add text, it's like there's an invisible object there with a text wrap applied, and it won't let me put my text to the top of the page.
    For info: the text box options are set to align text at the top, and to ignore text wrap on any other objects.  I've tried selecting all to see if there was something there that i was missing and needed to delete - no luck.  Even tried shutting down InDesign, reopening, and starting a new document - it does the same thing on the new document.
    It's a space about an inch wide, that extends from one side of the page to the other - but just on the top - I can place text all the way to the edge of the page on the sides and bottom, no problem.  HELP!!!!

    My guess is that you have aligned your text to document grid... and your grid starst a little bit below the top of your page.... If that´s the case, you have two options to solve your problem:
    1) adjust your grid´s starting point from Preferences > Grids
    2) Change your paragraph style setting Align text to Grid to None, you find it at Indents and Spacing tab (or alternatively you can change it locally from control panel as well)

  • Having a problem moving a text document from Photoshop to Illustrator.. Won't let me edit the text

    Hi there,
    I'm a complete technophobe so the answer to this could be quite obvious. I had to create a text using photoshop because of the inside of the text... i.e using a lobster font and it was pink glitter inside it so to give a girly effect.. It's for a college asignment.
    I have to use illustrator CS6 to put that text on a b/ground I already made in Illustrator but the .psd doc won't let me edit it in illustrator, it's almost like a PDF. Help!
    I hope it's not too confusing to understand, thanks in advance.

    Erica,
    is there a simpler way of explaining that?
    And I feared it was too easy to understand.
    You may, in front of the overall background (which you may lock or hide):
    1) Create a background with the appearance you wish to apply to the letters, such as a solid cpolour, a gradient or other clolour transition, and some pink glitter in front of it, you may Group all this for convenience; and you may use raster artwork (maybe from Photoshop) if you like;
    2) With the Type Tool create the live Type on top of 1), you may move and size it to fit (roughly);
    3) Select 1) and 2) and Object>Clipping Mask>Make; 2) will become the (invisible) Clipping Path showing the parts of 1) that are behind it and hide the rest.
    As mentioned, you may Direct Select 1) or 2) and edit or move them about relative to the background and each other.

  • Restart Problem-- Won't let me boot my computer up anymore.

    I downloaded an update, and it prompted me to restart my computer. When I did, this error message comes up, and it won't let me reboot my Macbook. It just stays on this screen, no matter what I do.
    I've also tried to re-install OSX by using the original boot disks, but I get the same screen each time. Here are links to the screen I get each time I reboot.
    error message:
    http://s132.photobucket.com/albums/q23/z3nbrain/?action=view&current=screen1.jpg
    the second one is of the full screen, but the error message is the same: http://s132.photobucket.com/albums/q23/z3nbrain/?action=view&current=screen2.jpg
    Is there anything I can do to get around this? I've a lot of files on my HD that I'd like not to lose, but I'm afraid my only option is getting a new HD or a completely new MB. Btw- If I can't figure out how to do this myself, I'll be taking it to a Genius Bar-- will they be able to fix this problem, or would it require me to actually ship my laptop directly to apple?

    This is unashamedly lifted directly from MacFixit.com - hope it helps
    "Problems starting up after Apple's February 15th updates (Security Update 2007-002, DST, Java R5): Fixes
    Yesterday Apple released a slew of system component updates via its Software Update mechanism and as standalone downloads yesterday, including:
    * Security Update 2007-002
    * Daylight saving time update (2/15) for Mac OS X 10.4.8 and 10.3.9
    * Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 5
    * Java for Mac OS X 10.3 Update 5
    Several users are experiencing relatively serious issues after applying these updates, including startup stalls, repeated kernel panics at startup and more. Unfortunately, since Apple released the updates simultaneously and many users applied all the updates in a single session, it is difficult to decipher the culprit(s) in most cases. It should also be noted that the updating of specific system components may not be strictly at fault in some instances -- instead, the update process itself may introduce issues or uncover preexisting problems [See this article on direct and indirect causes of issues after system updates for more].
    That said, there are a few common workarounds that prove highly effective in resolving the most prevalent startup issues post-system-update, as follows:
    Disconnect external devices/internal cards Try removing any FireWire, USB or other external peripherals then re-attempting startup.
    Failing that, try removing all PCI cards, ExpressCards or any other internal hardware that did not ship natively with your Mac.
    Disconnect network cables The cause for delay in some instances of this issue may be network related -- as Mac OS X tries unsuccessfully to ping an active connection. Temporarily disconnecting any ethernet cables -- then re-connecting them once Mac OS X has started up -- may resolve the delays.
    Delete Caches/.plist files If you experience startup problems, first try starting in Safe mode (hold the "Shift" key while you startup), then delete some cache and .plist files to make sure their corruption isn't at fault.
    This can most easily be accomplished with a shareware utility like Tiger Cache Cleaner or Panther Cache Cleaner, but also bears a manual process which involves dragging the following files to the trash:
    * com.apple.kernelcaches (a folder in /System/Library/Caches)
    * Extensions.kextcache (a file in /System/Library)
    * Extensions.mkext (a file in /System/Library/)
    * com.apple.ATS (a folder in /Library/Caches/)
    * com.apple.loginwindow.plist (a file in /Library/Preferences/)
    * Files that start with com.apple.LaunchServices (in /Library/Caches)
    You will be prompted to enter your administrator password when dragging these files to the trash. You may need to restart after moving them to the trash.
    Check for problematic login/startup items Startup in safe mode (hold the "Shift" key while you startup))
    Next, go to the Accounts pane of System Preferences and click the "Startup Items" tab. Select all the login items and click Remove, then restart.
    Also, check the /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems folders and remove any third-party items.
    Look for problematic kernel extensions Boot in Safe mode, and look in the folder /System/Library/Extensions for any third-party kernel extensions (files that end in .kext). Remove the kernel extensions and check for persistence of the issue.
    Repair drive damage In the case of drive directory damage or problems with permissions, the solution is usually to use Apple's Disk Utility to repair the disk. Of course, you won't be able to perform this operation normally (simply launching the Disk Utility application, located in Applications/Utilities, and initiating a disk repair) if your system will not startup. So two options exist:
    Insert your Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) media (DVD or CD) and restart the computer while holding down the "C" key. Once the computer has booted from the installation disc, select "Utilities" from the menubar and open Disk Utility. Repair the disk, then quit Disk Utility and restart your system.
    Alternatively, you can repair the disk while booted in single user mode if you do not have access to a retail Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) DVD/CD. To startup in single user mode, hold down the "Command" and "S" keys simultaneously at startup. Once properly booted, type the command fsck at the prompt. Repeat these process until no errors appear.
    Uninstall the update(s) An extreme measure is uninstallation of the most recently applied update(s).
    This can be accomplished via the following process; adapted from our tutorial on reverting to a previous iteration of Mac OS X. Note, however, that reverting your system will remove any refinements brought by the update and leave your system open to potential vulnerabilities.
    First, make a backup of your current Mac OS X installation with the Security Update applied, problematic as it may be. If there is an issue along the way, your valuable data will be safely intact in its current form.
    Next, you'll need to perform an Archive and Install process to remove all of the Security Update's (and potentially problem-causing) components, and replace them with the components of a fresh copy provided by the Mac OS X disc that shipped with your system, or a retail Mac OS X disc. Unfortunately, this means you will lose some system settings and some or all third-party system add-ons.
    To begin the process, insert your Mac OS X CD or DVD, as indicated above. Restart your machine and hold down the "C" key to boot from the newly inserted disc. Follow the on-screen instructions, and after accepting the license agreement, click "Options." Select "Archive and Install," and check the "Preserve User and Network Settings" option if you'd like to do so.
    After the installation process is complete, you will be left with an earlier Mac OS X system that (hopefully) does not suffer from the problems generated by the Security Update. Use Software Update or Apple's download page to download the update that brings your system to a state directly prior to the Security Update
    MacFixIt reader Paul Honis is among the many readers who found success with the aforementioned fixes. He writes:
    "I installed today's three updates this evening and got an unresolved Kernel Panic on the restart. A second restart yielded the same result. I restarted in single-user mode, ran fsck which took longer than usual, unplugged all USB and FireWire devices including the keyboard and mouse and restart succeeded. Re-plugged the keyboard and mouse and after successful reboot I can now run iCal, Safari and Mail."

  • If my macbook won't let me sign in on facetime what should i do?

    if my macbook won't let me sign in on facetime or messages what should i do?

    This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.
    Step 1
    Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
    Step 2
    Sign out of iMessage on all your Apple devices. Log out and log back in. Try again to sign in.
    Step 3
    Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
    Step 4
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ About This Mac
    Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.
    Step 5
    Take the steps suggested in this support article. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.
    Step 6
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
    If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If the box marked SOCKS Proxy is checked, uncheck it. You don’t need to change any other settings in the window. Click OK and then Apply. Test.
    The result may be that you can't connect to the Internet at all. Revert the change if that happens, or if iMessage still doesn't work. Remember that you must Apply any changes you make in the preference pane before they take effect.
    Step 7
    Select from the menu bar
               ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
    and click
              Block all sites from storing information on this computer
    Close the preference pane.
    Step 8
    Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
    Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to find and delete all items with "iMessage" or "com.apple.idms" in the name. Log out and log back in.
    Step 9
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.
    Step 10
    Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you start up, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound outputand Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. After testing, restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.
    If iMessage worked in safe mode, but still doesn't work when you restart in "normal" mode, stop here and post your results.
    Step 11
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.apsd.plist
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 12
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Step 13
    Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
    Step 14
    Reinstall OS X.
    Step 15
    If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support. When you set up a support call, select "Apple ID" as the product you need help with, not the hardware model. That way, if you're not under AppleCare, you may be able to talk your way out of being charged for the call.
