Word question

Hello,
Quick question specific to Microsoft Word: I can only print whole documents as the printing dialog won't let me edit the "from: xx to: xx" pages.
Any ideas?
thanks,
Loa

First- have you always had this problem, or is it new? Is it only with Word, or do other Office apps work ok? If new, the first thing I would try is a reboot of the computer and a restart of the program. If that didn't work, turn off the app and go to User>home library>preferences>microsoft.Word.plist and delete that plist. Restart the app and see if it will work now. If not, try going back to the same place, open the Microsoft folder in Preferences, and delete the Word.plist that is in there. Restart the app. If this doesn't work, or if this function has never worked, I would delete all of Word (use Finder>File>Find) and reinstall.

  • Working with Pages and Word-questions!

NOTE: Sorry for the similarity of this to my post a few minutes ago titled "Which do I use, Pages or Word)? I learned some things through experimentation and have created subtler and more challenging questions for you.
Help me out here (please). I am now working with Pages, sharing documents with dozens of behind the times colleagues who are using some old program called "Word." It's my job to work with these people and I'm trying to make it as easy for everyone as possible.
Do I have this right? When I create a document (or open an old Word document into pages), in order to be able to share it with people, I save it, and check the box to save a copy in Word format. Then when I send my documents, it works like a charm. Yes?
If I start by opening a Word document, and every time I save I check "save copy to Word," I end up with only one document, no version in Pages. If I start with a Pages document, or save without checking the box, I end up with two separate versions of the document (like when I create a pdf)? It appears that if I I want to keep working in the Word format, every time I save it will give me a dialog box and make me check the box (and possibly select my location). This is cumbersome since I am now in the habit of saving often (you learn that when you work with Word for the Mac for any period of time--bomb, bomb, bomb). So, an I correct in assuming that if I want to save regularly, I really have to work in Pages, and then be scrupulous about saving into Word when I'm done for the day, or just before I send? It's sort of a pain in the butt, although I can learn to do it--I just want to make sure I'm not missing something here. Also, is there an autosave function so I don't have to rely on my discipline? Or does it never ever bomb?
What happens if I open the Word version and make changes to it? Do I have to do something differently to make sure I have both versions identical? Am I better off always to open the Pages document to work on, then save and send?
Do I always then have two versions of the same document (like I would if I did this same thing with pdf)?
How do I make sure that the Word version is always up to date since that is the one I am sending to colleagues? Do I always have to save and check the box, and then select the correct document to send?
I do see that when sending a single document I can easily send it while I am in the document itself. When I do this, selecting to send it as a Word document (or a pdf for that matter), will it send the version I most recently saved, or the version that is on my screen (if I forgot to save changes)?
FInally, I'd be open to any tips from people working regularly with others who must use Word. I want it to work as simply as possible, but want to set up some good habits from the beginning.
Finally, finally, have you had problems with compatibility. I have to say that there have been very few Word document yet that I've opened that I haven't gotten a message that says that Pages doesn't support some aspect of the document and formatting is removed, or spacing is different, etc. The most common is that "paragraph borders operate differently so all borders except outside borders have been removed." I'm a bit nervous about this--will I be getting documents from others that I can't trust? Will I have to ask them to send a pdf as well so I can confirm that I got it right? Can anyone ease my mind? Or am I living in reality?
    Thanks a million!

Well yes they are not the same program so there will be differences.
For example Pages only allows a border all the way around a paragraph with few options on the style of line, which is why you got the warning.
A workflow would consist of you doing your work in Pages however you like it and when you have finished and saved, making a Word copy which you despatch to your colleagues and then throw away.
Of course this is more cumbersome than sticking with MsWord which is another option. You choose. It comes down to whether or not you have to tightly conform and interact with Word users. Maybe Pages is not for you, or even NeoOfffice which is a clone of MsOffice.
Test it. If it works and you like it stick with whatever solution works for you.

  • Microsoft Word Question.

I have Microsoft Word and want to know if their is a way to set it so whenever I send an invoice out for my business it will automatically have my signature on it so I don't have to keep resigning it every time?

Sorry, but why are you asking a question about the Mac version of Microsoft Word in the QuickTime for Windows forum? A far better place to ask an operational question about a Microsoft product would be in Microsoft's newsgroups.
    Regards.

We just purchased Office:mac 2008 Home and Student Edition. I thought I could convert text to Chinese; however, it is not highlighted as an option (greyed out). Does anyone know how I can activate this?

  • Pdf to word question (Acrobat 7 pro)

Hello, I am trying to conver a pdf file to a word file. What I want is Acrobat converts each pdf page as an image on a separate page in the word file. I noticed Acrobat always tris to convert pdf to editable text, only when that failes, it resorts to image conversion. Is there a way to force image conversion? Thanks ahead.

The conversion to text you have mentioned is an option in the scanner input. Just turn it off in the future. If it has already been converted, that is what you have. If you would like a set of graphics for all of the pages, just use the Save As and select TIFF. Once you get the TIFF files, import that graphics back to a new PDF or simply import into WORD directly.

  • Mac Office 2008 (Word question)

I am wondering how/if it is possible to park the formatting palette (you know, the toolbar that lets you bold, underline, italicize fonts etc.) to the top of your Word document? Currently the only way I am able to do this is by the following:
View > Toolbars > Formatting > and than click the "Formatting Palette" logo, still under the "View" tab
What I would like to do is make this standard and automatic throughout all of my Word documents without having to individually select this option each and every time I open a new document.
    Any suggestions?

  • MS Word question

    hi,
i apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to ask this, but i don't see a better category.
used to be, in office X, you could arrange docusments in word, excel, etc and had choices such as tiled, cascade, vertical or horizontal. in office 2004, these options aren't in the Window menu under Arrange. has this functionality been removed (which would be sad), or did they simply hide it?
    thanks to anyone who knows,

I do understand that for someone working with word it can be infuriating; you pay for an upgrade that is supposed to be better and you end up loosing features.
Nowadays I rarely use word (some times when I am asked to work at specific sites and I am required to write a report or some sort of summary). My word processing needs are to a minimum and beautifully covered by NeoOffice.

  • German word question.......

    Hello all,
Could you tell me about the words KOBEV and KOBED.. these appear in a small program called LV61B035.
    as below::
    ***INCLUDE LV61B035 .
    FORM KOBEV_035.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
KOBEV is a header level check while KOBED is an item level check.
OSS Note 156230 contains a very clear and thorough description of this function.

  • PDF/Word question

I have contracts that I'd like to be able to view on my Touch. Is there any way to email them to myself then save them somewhere on the touch outside of email? I could read them in email but when I'm at a place with no wifi, would I still be able to open the attachments? Or is there an alternative?

When you don't have access to the internet, you're still able to read recent messages (up to 200), you just don't receive any new messages. I don't think it is possible to save them on the touch outside of mail. I hope this comment is helpful to you!

  • "Word was unable to open the data source" error message in mail merge

I am trying to do a mail merge in Word 2008 for Mac and receive this message when I try to open the Excel file for the data.  Can someone please help?  I tried changing the filename to .xls (originally .xlsx) but it didn't work.

As far as I know, you cannot merge from a  .xlsx data source in Mac Word 2008, and even though there is a KnowledgeBase article at  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2604725 that suggests
that all you have to do is "rename" to a .xls, I think what you actually have to do is open the .xlsx in Excel and use Save As to create a .xls.
Generally speaking, you will be better off researching Mac Word questions in the relevant forum on Microsoft Answers, in this case here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2008-macword
This particular issue was discussed in this conversation: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2008-macword/cant-open-excel-file-for-mail-merge/90ccfd11-273f-4c2a-aa37-1d859b8e41e2?page=1
If that does not help, and you cannot find anything else in the Answers group, I suggest that you post a new question in that group, referencing the above conversation and specifying your version of Mac OSX.

  • Why is my spell checker not working in a document using Word 2003

I have a word document in Word 2003  .   I was altering it and noticed that from page 3 to 6 the spell checker does not work.
I transferred the pages into another another file still didn't work .  Just copied a paragraph still didn't work.  So I then started typing the rest of the document into another file and straight away it underlined my spelling mistakes in red.
So why not in these few pages of my document.
This is a paragraph from the pages below.  I altered some words deliberately to see if my Word 2003 would pick them up.  It didn't.
The landlord shall be entitiled to pursue the tenant for any reasonable costs incurred as a result of the tenant’s faulure to pay rent including but not limited to any charges for returned cheques or any reasonable costs incurred
in pursuing the tenant for payment of unpaid rent.
But when I put it in here it does pick them up.  So it is something I have done .

    Hi,
According to your description, this issue is more related to Word. The Word IT Pro Discussions forum is a better place for word questions, we will move it there for you.

  • Using iPhoto shots in MS Word word documents while limiting document size.

i am dragging and dropping some iPhoto '09 shots of plants into a Word 2008 document. 14 shots in 7 pages adds up to a ms word doc. of almost 1/4 Gig. i am not sure why the size has gotten so large - my photos are usually in the 2 to 7 meg range.
i pulled out all the photos from the document via picture clipping and the total size is 34.8 mb. the MS Word 2008 document containing all the photos and a little text is 227 meg.
i put one 3 meg photo in a new word test document resulting in a 34.8 meg ms word document.
Question: how can i use my iphoto photos in a ms word document economically? i realize this is a joint iphoto/ms word question -- but i will ask here first as i get more timely and accurate answers for the mac platform.
    thanks

thanks for the suggestions. i continued to dig around a bit and came across two ways to solve my problem that work for me. The approaches use Apple sofware, Preview and ColorSynch. The file sizes are reduce dramatically however the photo quality is also reduced. It would be nice if Apple could allow some choices on the degree of file size reduction -- in both options the file size reduction and resultant photo quality decline are fixed. Here is the summary of my finding and how to steps to use either approach. THe ColorSynch approach may be a bit superior.
Two easy ways to reduce the file size of a MS Word .doc with photos.
Original photo in iPhoto = 3 MB, Inserted in 1 page MS word .doc = 34.8 MB
    1. Word .doc = 34.8 MB - First step is to convert to a PDF document
    2. PDF format = 31.7 MB
    3. PDF reduced file size via Preview = 82KB see instructions below
    4. PDF reduced file via Color Synch = 181KB see instructions below
To compress a PDF file via Preview:
    O. Convert Word doc to PDF via preview if possible - note .docx not required
    1. Open Preview, in your Applications folder.
    2. Choose File > Open, select the PDF file to compress, and then click Open.
    3. Choose File > Save As, choose Reduce File Size from the Quartz Filter pop-up menu, and choose a name and location for the new PDF file.
    4. Click Save. The file size was reduced fro 34MB to 81KB
The compressed images will appear to be of lower quality when you view or print them.
To compress a PDF file via Color Synch
    1. Save your document as a regular PDF file,
    2. Then use Spotlight to find an application called ColorSync Utility and drag it to dock
    3. Drag the PDF file onto the icon in the dock and new color synch doc will appear,
    4. Then select "Reduce File Size" from the Filter dropd own button at the bottom left corner of the screen.
    5. Save the file, and the size of
    6. The PDF file should have decreased. 34MB to 181KB
The compressed images will appear to be of lower quality when you view or print them
    Based on OS 10.6.6 on a 2009 24" iMac.
Good luck. I saw one report that at one time the ColorSynch approach could be tailored but that feature was removed in 10.6 Too bad, with tailoring, Color Synch would be good solution for most folks.

  • MS-Word Macros with paramers via OLE

    Hi,
This is probably more of an MS-Word question than a Forte question,
but somebody out there might have done this before...
I have some MS Word macros (Originally WordBasic, but recently they
underwent automatic conversion to become Visual Basic) which take
    parameters.
I used to call these macros from Forte using DDE.
These days, it's a lot more fashionable to use OLE automation than
DDE so I thought I'd give that a go.
    But I can't.
Word.Applicaiton has a Run() method to run macros, but not macros
with parameters. Is there a neat way of getting macro parameters
    across to Word?

  • Creating PDF forms in Frame (switch from  Word?)

Here's another "can I switch from Word" question. I am an old (5.5) Frame ACE now in a new job where we use Word. Frame would be a much better choice in many ways, for many reasons.
I could use some help figuring out whether Frame creates forms that convert easily to PDF. As an end product, what we need is a PDF form with a large number of fixed-length text fields; users must be able to download the form and fill it in at their leisure, either all at once or in stages, saving their work as they go.
These files are currently constructed in Word out of tables. They are a terrible mess and must be recreated from scratch. If Frame handles forms well, we can start that work fresh in Frame and dump Word completely. (This is a question I could answer for myself in a few minutes if I could download a trial. Bad timing.)
Can somebody with a current copy of Frame tell me how it handles forms and whether it's possible to use Frame to create PDF forms with plenty of fixed-length text fields, some of them quite long?
Your help is much appreciated. Thank you!
    V. B. Beck

    Thank you, Sheila.
Users are most likely to simply have Adobe Reader.
Sorry to be asking for so much help--it is rather maddening not to be able to download the trial and take a quick look for myself.
Are form fields defined directly within Frame, or is it necessary to hack the PDF? If within Frame, how is length of input defined--by number of characters? Or, as with LiveCycle Designer, can you "limit length to visible area"?
Thanks as always and in advance for the help.
