Workaround for Flash Player 10 crash bug

My company develops Flash based e-learning modules, we've
been building modules based on our current codebase for a few years
now without problem. In our most recent project we've run into a
new bug where the Flash Player completely stalls the browser - this
has happened to 8 out of 20 users in our trial - seems to be
specific to WinXP / IE6 / FP10. It happens at different points
within the module.
So far we have been unable to reproduce this on any of the
computers in our office - I've have tried IE6, FP10.0.12.36 and
FP10.0.22.87. I've even tried testing with a debugging proxy and
throttled the connection down to 56kb.
Our code is using the Javascript Flash gateway, the original
Macromedia code which communicates via GetUrl and LocalConnection.
I have a hunch that the bug could be triggered during
communications.
Does anyone here know about any bugs in FP10 that could be
triggering this - and more importantly does anyone know of any
workarounds that I could use to solve the problem. Downgrading the
Flash Player version at the client's site is unfortunately is not
an option.
Advice appreciated,
Greg.

We're using the Macromedia Flash Javascript Gateway - we've
been using it for years without problem.

Is there a new way to do two-way communication between flash
and javascript?

  • IE8 ActiveX prompt workaround for Flash Player 10.

    Hey Folks. Im currently trying to embed an SWF file into an XHTML page using Dreamweaver CS4. On completion it runs perfect in the latest Firefox and Google Chrome browsers but I get prompted to 'allow activeX control' in IE8. I have tried UFO and the latest version of SWFObject to embed the file but nothing doing. I have also tried to rewrite the code into a .js file and used the document.write method to write the code on loading but still get prompted in IE8. IE8 also fails to acknowledge any anchored link references to the page located in other pages too :-s . I know there HAS to be a solution to this problem because if I load up other sites in IE8 that have vast amounts of flash content (Youtube) im not prompted at all for anything. I know im doing the UFO, SWFObject Dynamic Embed and document.write methods correctly because they work in Firefox and Chrome. Does anyone have a valid workaround to this dilemma before I go string myself from the rafters with piano wire?

  • Flash Player 10.2 Bug Resolved by ChessCube

    Flash 10.2 is a key part of the Adobe move towards a faster lightweight flash that leverages hardware acceleration. Early indications are that performance is massively enhanced. Flash is also on a critical path to get onto Android and other devices. This is something we at ChessCube are very excited about and support.
    Immediately after the release of Flash Player 10.2, ChessCube noticed that users’ Adobe plug-in was crashing. It was particularly bad for our Chrome browser customers as Chrome automatically updates users to the latest version of Flash under the hood.
    Further reading and the fix here:
    http://blog.chesscube.com/flash-player-10-2-bug-resolved-by-chesscube/

    Pat's analysis is absolutely correct: this is an issue for Flash developers (I doesn't look like the usage of Flex is relevant for the reproduction case), not for Flash Player users. As such, this post is definitely in the wrong place in a forum aimed at end-users trying to use the Flash Player.
    If you want to post this issue on the forums, please do so in one of the developer forums under http://forums.adobe.com/community/flash/ or http://forums.adobe.com/community/flex/.
    However, from the looks of it this is a genuine bug in the Flash Player so the absolute best place to report this issue is in the Adobe bugtracker: http://bugs.adobe.com/ In the mean time I concur that any ActionScript developer experiencing crash issues with switch statements should have a good look at the reproduction case and should be able to adapt his code to circumvent this Flash Player bug.
    PS I trashed most abuse reports for this thread for now, but please keep it cicvil.

  • Float4() causes "error saving Pixel Bender Byte Code file" error when exporting for flash player

    Simple test
    <languageVersion : 1.0;>
    kernel untitled
    <   namespace : "Your Namespace";
        vendor : "Your Vendor";
        version : 1;
    >
        input image4 src;
        output pixel4 dst;
        void
        evaluatePixel()
            dst = float4(sampleNearest(src, outCoord()));
    The above code will produce a "error saving Pixel Bender Byte Code file" error when exporting for flash player in Pixel Bender Toolkit 2.5.449694.
    "dst = (sampleNearest(src, outCoord()));" works fine. And anything like "float4 a= float4(b);" will give same error.

    Thank you for the error report.  I'll put it into our bug database.  We're bottling things up for the current version.  Gven the workaround, it is unlikely we'll be addressing this bug soon.  Please accept my apologies for the annoyance this will cause.
    In your second example, float4 a = float4(b), does it return an error if b is only a float4 or regardless of what b is?  If b is a scalar float, for example, is the conversion performed correctly? If so, this could be an error that only crops up when using constructor/conversion syntax when the thing being converted is already the correct type.
    Thanks,
    Chuck.

  • Adobe Flash player keeps crashing, but it's up to date on my computer. So is Firefox. Help?

    For some reason, starting today, every page I visit on Firefox (no matter what) comes up with a notification that the Adobe Flash Player plugin has crashed. It started when I was trying to attach a word document to an email to one of my professors on my Google-supported school email account. Every time I tried to attach the document, Flash Player crashed and it wouldn't upload. I finally had to send it using my Live email, which worked, but now Flash Player crashes on every webpage I visit in about 2 seconds. My Flash Player is up to date, as is my version of Firefox. What's going on here? (Note: None of the information of the "Adobe Flash Player has crashed" page was helpful at all.)

    Yes, this has been a problem for a lot of people. ADOBE just released Flash Player 11.0.1.152, and that seems to have fixed the problem. It still am finding it a bit laggy to load Flash scripts, but it no longer displays the crashed window.
    You can download the file from the official Flash website here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

  • My adobe flash player keeps crashing. Why?

    I use Mozilla Firefox exclusively as my browser. When I am connected to Facebook and playing their casino games, the Adobe Flash player keeps randomly crashing. When it crashes, it locks up the computer and I have to shut down and reopen the browser. Recently, an information box has been opening up in the upper left corner of the screen called the Adobe Flash Player action box or something like that. The context is filled with lots of computer jargon I don't understand. At the bottom of the box there are 2 options to pick from, either dismiss or continue. Most of the time the screen freezes up before I've had the chance to pick one. After I go to the Windows task manager and shut down the boxes that were open, I get the normal gray "Adobe Flash Player has crashed" screen. The really odd thing is that there is no prompt allowing me to send a crash report to Mozilla. I have uninstalled and completely reinstalled the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. Just in case these might be a problem, I have the following 3 "add-ons" loaded in to the browser: Quick Time Plug-in 7.7.6 7.7.6.0, Shockwave Flash 16.0.0.305, and Shockwave for Director 12.1.7.157. As well, in case they might be the problem, I have the following 2 programs installed into my computer are: Adobe Flash Player 16 NPAPI and Adobe Shockwave Player 12.1. FYI: I am running Windows 8.1 64 bit. Hopefully I have given you enough information to make an assessment. If you need anything from me, please let me know. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

  • Adobe Flash Player Update crash

    "Adobe Flash Player Update Service 11.3 r300 has encountered a problem ..."
    I'm trying to answer this question, but don't know how to do it. So I'm starting new discussion.
    I’ve had this problem for over a month and have reinstalled adobe flash player multiple times.
    But now, I think I finally have the answer.
    My tech downloaded the adobe flash player “installer” today.
    But I think the key is to
    1) start / run,
    2) enter “services.msc,
    3) go to adobe flash player update services
    4) right click to get to properties
    5) change startup type to ‘Automatic” and service status to “Stopped”.

    I stumbled upon something that worked although I don't know why the two items are related. I was resetting FireFox in another attempt to get the latest Flash player to work and noticed that my Java Console was disabled. I don't remember ever disabling it but I turned it back on and suddenly, the Flash player stopped crashing.
    Maybe this will help someone else.

    I have had the same problem with firefox on facebook. It has happened for the last couple weeks. I can receive gifts under requests and every game I try crashes. I can usually read my homepage. this is getting really bad. I have cleared caches,downloaded what I am told to download to update, and cleared history and cookies and still happens , and have been told to get rid of firefox. what is the problem? and when I sent reports , nothing. and sent emails to all the games and told them and asked for help and never get responses. should I through the computer out the window, or delete you? I know they keep changing things on the games and that usually crashes stuff on mine, but all the time? this sucks. and I probably won't get a response from you either,but if this continues I will have to say, bye bye.It's ridiculous..before the crashes, it would take me over 2 hours to do a game and work on it. there was life before this and will be afterwards. it also happens on my regular email..not the crashing, but so slow and the download goes up and goes way down to almost nothing and keeps doing that.please help us all..thanks.

  • Deploy for Flash Player 9.x

    How do you you develop with the latest build for Flash Player 9?
    Anyone?
    Thanks

    Well, according to http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode,
    You can elect to make the following changes:
    Disable all add-ons: If you select this box and then click Make Changes and Restart then Firefox will start back up in its normal mode, except all your  extensions, themes, and plugins will be disabled (not uninstalled).
    So how can Flash Player plugin run in Firefox Safe Mode if it's a plugin and it's disabled?
    I've already determined that Flash Player is the problem by having it as the only add-on (plugin) that's enabled. All other extensions and plugins except for Firefox are disabled. My theme is the default one.
    The site I visit doesn't matter, if it has Flash content on the page I'm visiting Firefox instantly crashes.

  • Flash Player 9 crashes my browser when I open advance settings

    Hi, I'm using the newest version of Flash (9,0,115,0) and
    when I try to access the advanced settings and click the webcam
    tab, both my browsers crash (IE and Firefox2).
    The screen I am talking about is:
    http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help09.html
    I can click on any other parts of the tab, but it only
    crashes when I click on the webcam icon. This is weird, because the
    mic tab recognizes my webcam (Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000).
    Anyone know of a solution to this?
    I am on a Dell E1705, Centrino Duo 1.67ghz, 1GB Ram and
    nVidia GeForce 7900GS

    highonfire, please open a technical support case for this
    issue:
    http://www.adobe.com/support
    (you can only open a webcase for Flash Player.... )
    It woul also be interesting to see what happens if you
    uninstall your cam and it's drivers and retest..
    Another thing you can do (if you're the admin on the machine)
    is create a new user profile.. Log in as that user, install the
    browser of your choice and your cam drivers and test with just that
    user profile.
    If you can do those test please provide that information to
    the agent who handles the web case.

  • I can't play my games on Facebook.Adobe Flash player plugin Crashed keeps coming up.I have updated adobe,did not help.

    I cant play my games (FarmVille FrontierVille) On Facebook,Adobe Flash player plugin crashed keeps coming up.I have updated to the newest file.No good.

    I am having this same problem. Before the updates, the Adobe Flash player NEVER crashed in Firefox (it did in Google Chrome all the time) and now it's crashing in all my favorite games....Farmville, Frontierville, Yoville, and Treasure Isle. It doesn't seem to be effecting the less-detailed Zynga games, such as Mafia Wars or Vampire Wars; and I can go into more detailed games that aren't Zynga and they seem to work fine too. I am not 100% sure what exactly the problem is, or who is causing it because I had a Firefox update, and then an Adobe update to the 10.1 beta. So I'm not sure if it's one or the other, or both of them put together.
    I have uninstalled/reinstalled the flash player so many times my mind is numb, and even tried to find the one I had prior to this new 10.1 and nothing has worked. I even did what that link Chris posted to do, and I thought it had worked at first...I actually got to go into my Farmville and Treasure Isle for a little bit, then it turned around and crashed again.
    This is literally driving me crazy trying to figure it all out.....and it upsets me that everything was fine one day, then after some updates, everything is messed up. And it's just my luck that it effected some of the games I like to play the most.

  • What to do now that Adobe ended support for Flash Player 10.3?

    Adobe ended support for Flash Player 10.3 on July 9. Downloads are no longer available anywhere that I can find. Adobe says 11.7 is now the "extended release" version. Since 10.3 has been the only solution when the latest Flash Player version won't work with Firefox, what do we do now? I have tested every Flash Player release after 10.3, and each starts crashing repeatedly after 24 hours. Each time, retreat to 10.3 was the only solution. The other suggestions in Firefox help don't work. I uninstalled 10.3 a few days ago to test 11.8 - the latest. It doesn't work with Firefox. Now I could only install 11.7. It hasn't failed yet, but it probably will tomorrow.
    If Flash Player 11.8 and 11.7 don't work, and 10.3 is unavailable, what can we do?

    You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:
    *disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
    *disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
    *disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
