Workflow for editing multiple size projects

Hi,
I work for a digital design agency and we often produce edits that are for multiple sized placements on websites. For example we may have one for an MPU (300x250), another for a leaderboard (728x90) and so on.
The problem I've found, and there doesn't seem to be a good solution for, is that Premiere Pro doesn't allow a project setting to be changed after the fact.
The only solution I've found is creating a new project at the required size, importing the sequence in and rendering from that, and I was wondering if there's a better workflow?
Somebody suggested using AE to do everything, but it seems to make more sense to me to use the editing app to do the editing. One problem with the workaround is that the sequence just comes in as a single block apparently, it doesn't keep the edits separate. And sometimes I might want to tweak the edit for different placements.
It all seems a bit convoluted at the moment, and I'm just trying to figure out a streamlined workflow for producing edits to multiple sizes.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi,
it has to go to quicktime I'm afraid - I've questioned this myself, but basically it goes to another authoring company who encode to flash, host the site etc.
Normally I do it as uncompressed or animation at highest quality.
Yeah, the encoding doesn't take long - just trying to feel around the best way to do this - trying to get something that's composed for one aspect ratio to work in a completely different one is more of a bottleneck than the actual encoding.
I may be mistaken, but I'm sure older versions of Premiere allowed the project settings to be changed at any point.
Thanks,
Steve

  • Best workflow for editing Logic Pro 8 regions/tracks in Soundtrack Pro?

I've searched for a solution for the below question in several forums and to no avail. Thanks in advance for any help!
What is the easiest workflow for editing Logic Pro 8 audio files with Soundtrack Pro 2? And I'm thinking of a process very similar to the Final Cut Pro timeline audio-to- Soundtrack Pro Audio File project workflow.
I'd imagine that a good amount of the time, I'd be editing regions rather than full audio files -- as in, once in a while, while mixing sessions that another engineer has tracked, I'll hear clicks and pops from pre-amps clipping; or I'll hear an air conditioner blower running or something.
Basically, I occasionally hear noise in the arrange window while mixing that I'd like to edit out with Soundtrack Pro, and I need to know the easiest way to send that audio clip to Soundtrack Pro and then back to Final Cut Pro.

Connecting your FS Mobile to powered speakers will not increase latency. Latency is simply the fixed amount of time it takes for your computer to process sounds. Once the sound is processed and available at the outputs of the FS Mobile, it can go anywhere; to a PA mixer, a separate monitor mixer, headphones, etc. One thing you will want to consider when playing live is to have a personal monitor very close to you and pretty loud. The reason being is that the physical distance between you and the main PA speakers will itself induce a type of latency since sound travels at about 1126 ft/sec or 1000 msec of delay for every 1126 feet. Adding this delay to your latency could make holding a groove or pitch for that matter nearly impossible. The delays add up pretty quickly. For example, if your speakers are say 50 feet away from you, you would likely have around 20 msec of delay right there. Add this to your system latency of 20 msec and your up to 40 msec which is like trying to play a rubber guitar underwater. Even if your PA speakers are closer, the delays add up quickly. So having that nice loud monitor right up next to you will insure that you only have to get the feel of your system latency.

What is the best workflow for the following--
I have a project where I want to do some work on my laptop, then work on the desktop, then back to the laptop?
As a video guy, in Final Cut I do this by having two identical copies of my media, and simply transferring the FCP project file back and forth between the two computers.
Is there an equivalent in Aperture of transferring your selections/edits between two copies of Apeture with the original master files on both in identical projects?

I don't know what you mean by "bandwidth options". If you mean the frequencies and bands the iPad can use with cell carriers, those are listed in the Wireless and Cellular area of the tech specs. For iPads sold in the US, see:

If that's not what you meant, please post back and clarify what you mean by "bandwidth options".

  • Best h264 workflow for editing multicam 1080p 24fps

I have had reasonable success in editing footage from my Canon 5D mkii in CS5 multicam on my quad-core win 7 machine.  I'm finding though that the exported encoded footage (uncompressed AVI) seems to have lost some of its colour rendition (I haven't ventured into colour grading as yet).  Is there a preferred workflow for lossless editing of h264 footage or should I convert it before importing into CS5?  Any suggestions?

It sounds like your offline-online protocol is not what it should be.
Make dv versions of your media.  Do not change the names of the clips.  Be sure you are carrying over the proper timecode to the dv versions.
Do your edit with the dv versions.
Highlight the converted DV clips in the browser and make off line.  Do not make the clips in the sequence offline.
Then reconnect the clips, but point instead at the HD clips.  Everything should repopulate-- sequences, etc.
    Does this not work?

  • HDV/ sony ZIU workflow for editing & mastering

I'm new to this forum so first off thanks for having me.
I'm trying to develope a successful workflow that will carry this studio throught the upcoming year of producion.
We wil be shooting HDV w/ the Z1U and editing in FCP 5.0...
We need to edit webisodes weekely as well as log and master the HDV footage for stock footage, broadcast use and other future applications.
Here is my initial game plan:
I was planning to work in SD by capturing the footage with the downconvert option (HDV-DV) strait off the camera. I'm doing this to keep my logging speed and disc space low. Also, I'm assuming that for exporting QTs for the web the quality will still look great.
Then later for my HDV masters I will open a new project in FCP, compile all my clips and re-capture the footage in HDV.
At this point I would be running all my FCP setups for native HD, 1080i60, etc. Then, Print to Video from my FCP project back to the Sony Z1U camera.
Does this make sense to other out there, considering we can't afford and HDcam deck or AJA Kona at this juncture?
Has anyone had issues re-capturing footage in HDV and/or printing back to tape?
    Thanks and Aloha,

    Welcome!
I can't comment on you workflow,
however since you are looking towards the future, I would strongly recommend that you upgrade your OS X to 10.4.8, and purchase the FInal Cut Studio 5.1 crossgrade for $50.00 (before offer expires sometime in Dec I believe).

  • Best workflow for Blu-ray/DVD projects

For most of my encore projects, I end up creating a blu-ray and dvd version of the project.  What is the best way/workflow to do this?  I always seem to end up running into problems.

Unless you are working with a high end pro format, Pro Res 422 is perfectly fine to use as a master file. PR 4444 is PR HQ with an alpha channel so you probably can save a lot of space and speed up your exports by dropping down two levels.
If you use the BluRay prests in Compressor, it should do a very good job of encoding. Perhaps Toast is recompressing your file. I don't use the software but I think there is a setting simewhere to avoid the second compression.
Or have FCP make the BD directly.

  • Workflow for editing and organizing video with PSE7 and PRE7

I'm quite new to using PSE to organize my videos, and would appreciate suggestions on tutorials or guides creating a nice workflow to keep the growing number of clips manageable.
What I've done is to import my videos into a separate catalog, and I kind of hoped that I could make version sets like with still photos. I can't seem to find that option. Is it possible?
Alternatively, I'd like to just replace the original clip with an edited version, but again I haven't found an easy way to do it.
Any suggestions on how to start are welcome, also if they take a different approach from what I mention above.

I've created an overview of the Organizer and its functions for Muvipix.com. You can find it here:

Otherwise, there's unfortunately little information on it.

  • Workflow for editing and exporting many photos?

I have a lot of photos from a graduation ceremony to edit in LR3. I want to use the edited photos in a video that I will use Sony Vegas to create.  Vegas will need the edited photos.  Is there a better workflow to get the edited photos on a hard drive than exporting each photo individually after it is edited?  Perhaps some sort of batch export of any photo that has been edited during the LR editing session?
The photos are .jpg if that matters.

As mentioned, you don't need to export individually.
How you select them all could be easier or harder!  I would create a collection, and as you select and edit, then drag into the collection.  You can then look over the collection to make sure everything looks as it should, without the distraction of all the ones you didn't select (there are SO many ways to accomplish this!). I said collections because it's easier to see; you could instead flag them, filter for them, etc.
Then just cmd/cntrol-A to select them all, and export.
    Cheers!

  • Is there a recommended tutorial for editing multiple track regions?

I've been used to DP where you define a region of time on the sequence, select all the tracks you want to affect, then proceed to do any number of things with those tracks..like, maybe nudge them one way or another to line up a punch in more precisely. For example, I was tracking in another studio where they were using Nuendo. The session was laying down 8 tracks of drums to a stereo mix of the main tune. When the drummer wanted to go back and punch in a few bars, the engineer could grab the in and out of all 8 tracks of the punch in and easily line up the in point to a precise location, as well as trim the out.
Maybe I need to break out the manual again, but in Logic, I can set the locators, but only see the button where I can "cut" that selection, and am not sure if it's possible to move all the tracks around.
    Anyway...thanks for any direction here.

    Hello JAYUSBEEUS,
"iMovie is meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders"
HDD camcorders record in MPEG format which is not accepted by iMovie. If you were to buy one of these cameras, you would have to convert all your recorded video to DV format before being able to edit it.
If you want to be able to edit your videos on your mac, your best choice is a MiniDV camcorder. Sony, Canon, and Panasonic have several models in your pricerange. My personal favorite is the Panasonic GS500, a 3-chip camcorder with very good pic quality at a reasonable price. • Workflow for editing HD PAL .m2ts and .mpeg4 on Final Cut

I have PAL HD files in two formats (.m2ts and .mpeg4) from 2 cameras of the same event. These files need to be converted to a mutually compatible format to edit in Final Cut (Studio 2). I would appreciate knowledgeable recommendations on a work flow, including the best converter(s) to use.

I could not load either file format into MPEG-Streamclip. Do you think there is any better media converter than the VoltaicHD? I am trying it out and it is the best I have seen. Clean and the controls for the Quicktime .mov file out. Although, when I play output clips set to digitize at 25 frames, they are all reported as 29.97 -- is this a bug?

  • Workflow for finishing DV project (G-nicer filter)

    Hi,
Was wondering on the proper (i.e. smartest) workflow for finishing a DV project. Am I totally wrong in using these steps:
1.) Change sequence settings from DV to an uncompressed format (8bit uncompressed?).
2.) Put the chroma smooting filter (Nattress´ G-nicer seems to be the best for this purpose) as the very first filter onto all clips.
3.) Colour correct so that each scene is uniform
4.) Apply (if needed) film-effects filters (again Nattress´ film filter).
Thanks for any input & advice.
    Quad G5, iMac G5 20", G4 QS 867mhz, iBook G4, Mac mini, and a dusty PB 190 Mac OS X (10.4.7) DSR-570, DSR-11, 2x24" Dell and some more toys.

But wouldn´t it make more sense applying the chroma soften before the colour correction?
BTW, I read an interesting post on Shane´s blog, suggesting to not convert the project into uncompressed before the very end of post. That way one enjoys more real-time effects.
So, do you agree that this would make an o.k. workflow:
    1.) Apply Nattress´ G-nicer 1.1 onto all clips
2.) Colour correct so that each scene is uniform
    3.) Apply Nattress´ film filter
4.) Change sequence settings from DV to an uncompressed format (8bit uncompressed?)
Would you recommend colour correcting after the film-filter or before?
Again, thanks for your very helpful input.

  • Can someone recommend an efficient workflow for creating and maintaining web ads in multiple sizes?

I work for an online news site that runs ads from multiple clients. These ads (animated gifs) are sometimes run across multiple sizes (728x90, 510x60, 300x250, etc), and are often changed week to week.
Currently, I have a separate photoshop file for each ad & when a client requests a change, I have no choice but to go through and edit each individual ad size, then re-export themas animated gifs. Some clients require 4-5 different ad sizes, per ad, and if they change their mind on something, I have to go back and edit 4-5 ads. Each set of ads is saved in a dated folder that rests within the client's folder. We are extremely busy at work & the ads are piling up. Just wondering if someone had a good suggestion for an easier way to create & maintain these ads. I haven't used the asset generator...I'm wondering if that is a solution?
Also...bonus question ...with auto-select checked, is there a way to select items that are in a grouped folder without selecting the entire group? I currently have to uncheck "auto-select", select the layer in the layers panel and then am able to move the object.
    Thanks in advance!

With the auto select, there is either a check box or a drop down selection to have it select layer or group.
Smart objects don't work for creating different size gifs?

It is possible that the workflow has already been registered in db before you modified workflowActivities.xml.Did you try cleaning up workflow tables and restart the server??
    epub_workflow_info, epub_coll_workflow, epub_ind_wf,epub_wf_server_id tables
Make sure there is only one entry for each workflow in epub_workflow_info. If there are multiple entries, then it may be coming from 2 different places and you need to disable one of them. Whenever you create custom work flow, copy the existing workflow and modify it and give it a different name. If you are importing programmatically, you really dont need to configure it in taskConfiguraiton.xml ( as it corresponds to settings related to which item-descriptors, tabs, security in BCC gui).

  • Multiple libraries, projects and reorganizing for the new year

I have used Aperture since 1.0 and really like it but the growing pains are still present - over time of use, I've ended up with multiple libraries [2 main ones and 2-3 little ones that probably can be safely archived]. I want to start fresh in the new year and have a new Library that is my main one, my only one in fact == is it possible/feasible/desireable to export projects from Library A and B and then import the ones i want into my 2007 Library the way my new organizing system will be? I mainly have images according to geography and people [e.g. people in locations versus family and friends]. Can I consolidate all my Libraries into one new one for use in the future ?? Will exporting each project and then importing into my new master Library work??

I've been thinking just a little about what features I would like the next rev of aperture to have. Though I haven't thought through the specifics, easier and more efficient use and management of multiple libraries, projects etc would be nice. Whole aperture projects referenced from multiple libraries or some such? (I said I hadn't thought it through!)
It's over a year since aperture came out, macworld is coming up, and I suspect that 2.0 will be released eventually some time in the future, perhaps with changes (maybe even improvements!) in library and project workflow.
So while I too am considering how to organize my own aperture materials I am currently holding off for bit just in case there might maybe possibly be (Conjecture Warning!!!) something new announced soon....
