Workflow using FCPX and AVCHD.

Hi All,
I'm about to start on a new series of projects, and just wanted some clarification from people cleverer than I about the proposed workflow from the client (who knows as little about this as I do!).
The footage is to be recorded 1080i (Sony hxr-nx70e). The footage recorded in AVCHD onto SDHC cards. Those cards will then be sent to me. I would import the footage into FCP X directly from the cards through my Imac's SDXC inbuilt card reader (and in 'capturing' the footage I would save it - and the project to an external raid drive) then I edit away.
Now A) Does that workflow make sense?
and B) Will FCPX be able to see the footage and use it imediately without converting it?
Be really greatful for any help here. I think that's all correct but I just wanted to clarify before I tell them this suggestion would work.
Thanks.
Tim

The first thing you should domis use FCP to make an archive of the card onto a backup drive. Import from the archive. No need to wait for conversion, you can start editing immediately after you've selected the clips and closed the import window.

  • Using FCPx and Compressor dvd stutters

Using FCPx and Compressor I have put a 2 minute film on a dvd but when I play the dvd it stutters irregularly. I have tried lots of different settings and need HD quality. Can anyone help please? Thanks Helen

Are you putting a ProRes file on a standard DVD? You can't play it back. The DVD disc his nowhere near the through put needed to support high data rate media. The DVD format is very heavily compressed to allow proper play back, which that can be managed off the disc.

  • Workflow for using proxies and AVCHD

I'm working on a 6 camera mulitcam project of a theatrical performance and I'm using Premiere CC.  The footage is all spanned AVCHD from Canon Vixia's.  My machine is pretty good but no way is it going to play 6 streams of AVCHD at once (I've done 4 and that was pushing it!).
I've done a little searching on the forum and found this post:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4877276#4877276
    In particular, Fuzzy says:
    The workaround is the following:
    - create a folder for your proxies next to the folder containing original footages and name it e.g. AVCHD.Proxies;
    - transcode your MTS files into MPEG2 ones with the same file names and MTS file extention (or run Batch Rename in Bridge after transcoding with MPG file extention);
    - close your PrPro project, created out of original MTS files;
    - temporarily rename AVCHD folder containing original MTS files to e.g. AVCHD.Sources and AVCHD.Proxies to AVCHD;
    - open up PrPro project and enjoy: all your original AVCHD files are now linked to MPEG2 proxies.
When you're done, reverse rename folders.
This idea appeals to me but I've got a question.  My files are all spanned AVCHD.  It seems, in his example, that each .mts has a corresponding mpeg2.  With my spanned clips, how will Premiere know how to put them together properly?  I don't really mind if there is a one frame drop between the mpeg2 clips but will this majorly screw things up when I swap the proxy footage out?
Is there a better way to do things now, one year on?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hmmmm... still having problems.
I got back to work this morning (having spent most of the weekend and yesterday raking leaves) to find that all of the mts have successfully been transcoded into mpg clips.  I added a new STREAM folder, moved the clips and changed the file extension to .mts.  So far so good.
I decided not to stitch the spanned mts clips first because I'm on a Mac and I haven't found a good (free) stitcher.  I have a nice Windows one that I like but i didn't have the time to move the clips to a Windows machine, stitch them and then move them back again.  This may still need to be done because I'm faced with a new problem.
When I go into Premiere and try to import the mpg clips (now hiding under the .mts extension) I get the error "The file has an unsupported compression type".  This happens if I use the regular import OR the Media Browser.
Any ideas?  I compressed these in AME using the default "Match Source - Medium Bitrate".  I used the H.264 format, not the MPEG2 format thinking that Macs like H.264 but I wonder if this is the problem
Thanks for everything, by the way.  You've been more than helpful

  • Invoking a workflow using GP and WD Java Adobe Forms

    Hi,
I have a scenario where I want to be able to submit an Adobe Form for approval, if its approved I get info from a BAPI which populates the form, if not I just get a message saying, Not approved. So in steps i'd like to be able to:
    1) User fills in a form with input parameters,
    2) Submit form,
    3) Approver receives form for approval,
    4) Approver approves and a BAPI is invoked with the input parameters in the form, the form is populated with what the BAPI returns.
    5) Form is sent back to user.
    6) If form not approved then message sent to user.
I want to create the Adobe form in Web Dynpro Java. I need advice as to if I should do the whole process in GP, or can I use them both together? What are the steps involved? Can this be achieved? Do we use Portal email services to send communication between the user and the approver? Any advice/help/suggestions very welcome.
    Thanks

    Hi Lisha
For storing the data from form to workflow and from workflow to trancation it better to maintain custom table to get the details later. You can use the std FM to insert the data from the form to table in this case you need not create custom table. Tell me which module you are working on. MSS or for ESS like leave, travel, actions like seperations, transfer which one you are using.

  • This is my first time using FCPX and I just completed editing a music video. What are the last things I have to do to get the best quality out of my video before I try to upload it to youtube?

I want my music video to look as crisp as possible. I was wondering if there were an tricks or tips that needs to be done before i upload it to youtube. This will be my first time uploading anything to youtube so im not sure. also what does rendering mean? and compressing? thanks

Best quality = "master file" export. You can export said file and store it where ever you like.
But quality "out" depends on what you put "in." You can never "improve" on the quality during the edit process. If you had low quality H.264 files to begin with, that's the best it's gonna get. If you had HQ ProRes422 or even 4444... (which is "above" 2k HD quality) those are great. And the output will be rich. But most likely, you will have to compress that file to exhibit it. (I'll get to that later.)
Now, when you share to YouTube, you will be limited on quality. They have a prescribed bit-rate and compression. (Even though they do offer 1080p.)
Now, you will NOT be able to share a "master" file to YouTube. Much too big.
Luckily, in the share options, FCPX has an option for "YouTube." It does all the compression for you. BTW: This is awesome. It finds your account and does the "posting" for you. It's simple.
Rendering = calculations made on various effects. A non linear editor has to build files for some effects... dissolves, moves, filters, etc, etc. The software does "math" and crunches numbers--to make your image animate across the screen, example. This is called "rendering." Depending on your preferences, this is done for you.
Now when you output or "share," rendering is done for you automatically. If you choose to see how an effect will look "smoothed out," you can choose to render a file on the fly.
Compression means just that. Video files are, by nature, huge... billions of O's and 1's. To make them flow thru various pipelines (the electronic infrastruture) most files are compressed--or made smaller. Basically, some of the duplicate O's and 1's are taken out. (It's much more complicated than that, I'm givng a laypersson's definition.) The more you compress, the less quality you get. The picture begins to look "jig-jagged" or pixelated. There is less detail in the picture.
When you go to "share" to YouTube, FCPX will do this compression for you, up to (or should I say, "down to") YouTube's specs.

  • Burning footage to DVD with Chapters using FCPX

I have created some footage using FCPX and now want to burn it to DVD. As the footage is long I want to include a menu with chaptures to allow me me to go sytreight to a certai  part i.e. scene selection.
When I select the DVD in the share menu it only appears to allow me to burn the footage and not include chaptures.
    How do I do it

If you choose Compressor, it'll cost you $49 from the Mac App store unless you already have it. The DVD subsequently burned by Compressor will have a basic menu that you have limited control over but the process to a finished DVD has few steps.
If you choose iDVD, it's free. (disclaimer: I don't know for sure if iDVD is still included on new Macs. If it isn't and that's what you have, could be a bit of trouble trying to get a copy). iDVD has a large collection of themes you can use to author a DVD and you can customize it fairly well. iDVD will recompress any video you give it so you can just export the full movie out of FCP X without compressing it first (Share->Export Media command)
    I haven't used "Burn".

    Bowjunky9 wrote:
… I added this footage to my HD weeks ago to make room the the camera HD for more footage. What do you mean it needs wrap?
AVCHD is no 'format' but a specific folder-structure.
to allow FCPX to import from there, this COMPLETE files&folders structure has to be intact.
'cause people ignored that, since MacOS 10.8. this folder strucuture is hidden in a pkg-file, which looks like that:
this 'Private' thing is actually a folder, containing folders, containing ....
my screenshot shows a backup or 'archive' of one of my recordings, on an extHDD, inside a folder.
to import such a camera-backup, I choose Import File in FCPX and click down to my backup, 'til this structure gets visible.
in case for whatever reason you have NOT copied the whole SDcards content, it looks like this:
these are the actual 'videos' inside the AVCHD structure (notice the loooong way to it in the breadcrumb down below)
mts is no video-codec, but a 'wrapper' or media-container - inside are the h264 encoded videos. to allow FCPX to import such files, they needed to be re-wrapped from mts>>mov (NOT converted!)
there are commercial solutions such as ClipWrap, or the free reMux tool

  • How to use FCPX to edit from multiple cameras and keep audio in sync?

I apologize if this is obvious.  I thought I saw a discussion about it in this list already but I cannot find it for the life of me.  And I am a relative newbie to video editing.  Here's my question/problem.
I film live musical performances using a three-camera setup.  Using Final Cut Express, I typically bring the clips into a multi-track timeline and sync the clips to the master audio.  Then to create the edit of the performance, I go through the performance and essentially select a camera angle by cutting it out of it's track and dragging it up to a fourth video track.  Utlimately, this fourth track (with suitable transitions) becomes the final product.
The point being that it's critical that all three cameras be kept in sync so I can choose whatever angle works best without having to do additional audio sync of any kind.
The question is, is this approach to a synchronized multi-camera edit possible/practical in FCPX?  Or is there a different approach/workflow that FCPX encourages that will get the same effect?  Otherwise, I cannot see how FCPX will work for any kind of multi-camera project where there is a fixed timeline imposed by the audio track...

  • How To: Use FCPX to create iPhone Portrait Movies (and other non-standard formats)

Goal: Use Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7 to produce a 640x1136 video (iPhone 5 Portrait). You can use these same steps to produce virtually any dimensions you want. My example is for the iPhone 5, in Portrait mode.
This information is available in various places, but you have to realy work to find it, so I thought I'd post a step-by-step guide here.
By the way, you might think you could just create a FCPX Project with your desired dimensions, but you can't (at least with 10.0.7). Projects only support certainly dimensions. But there are other ways, as the rest of this post describes:
    1) Create an initial movie with the desired dimensions, to serve as a template. We'll call it "Template.mov". The only thing that matters is the dimensions. It can be in any codec FCPX understands, and virtually any length.
I'm using a 2 second video shot on my iPhone for the template. You could also create a blank image (.png, whatever) with the proper dimensions, copy and paste it into a new Quick Time Pro 7 window, and Export it using custom settings. There's lots of different ways to do this.
    2) Drop Template.mov into a FCPX event.
    3) Select Template.mov in the Event browser, and select File->Duplicate (or command-D). You probably could just edit "Template.mov", but it's a good idea to save it for reuse.
    3) Change the name of the copied video. I'm using "iPhone Video".
    4) Right-click "iPhone Video" and select "Open in Timeline".
    5) If you made the Template video from a still image, you may need to change the duration (ctrl+D). You don't have to make it very long, but it needs to be longer than 1 frame. A few seconds should be enough.
    6) Use this timeline like you'd use a project's timeline. Drop in new content, trim, transition, etc. There may be things you can't do in it, but I haven't found any yet. I'm guessing Chapters may not work, but I haven't tried them.
    7) Note that when you drop new content into the timeline, it may size funny. That's because the default setting for "Spacial Conform" is "Fit". Simply select the newly-dropped content, and in the Video settings inspector, scroll down to "Spacial Conform" and change it. You could use "Fill", which fills the frame vertically, or "None", which uses the source's original height. Then crop/transform/whatever to get what you want.
    8) When you're ready to render, select "iPhone Video" in the Event browser, then use the "Share" button. You want to use the "Export File" destination, which you may have to add. Pick your codec, and let 'er rip.
    9) When the rendering is done, you should have a video in your desired dimensions.
That's all there is to it. Hope this helps someone.

PS: Don't ask why someone would want to create an iPod video using FCPX. The point is that you may need to create a video with non-standard  dimensions at some point in time, and this is how to do it.
PPS: Most of this information came from http://library.creativecow.net/articles/payton_t/FCPX_Custom-Resolution-Timeline s/video-tutorial. I just wrote it down, while I tried to do what the video suggested.

Instructions for using QuickTime Pro 7 to create a template video with unusual dimensions.
I suspect that anyone savy enough to be using FCPX has probably already figured out how to do this, either using my technique or another, so there probably isn't a real need for me to post this. For that matter, I may be the only person who cares about this at all. However, while I was trying to learn how to do all of this, I would have really appreciated having all the information in one place, so here goes.
If you want to create a video with unusual dimensions (like 640x1136) using my steps above, you'll need a "template" video first. Here's an easy way to create one, using any image editor, and QuickTime Pro 7.
    1) Open QuickTime Pro 7 (QTP for short).
    2) From the menu, select File->New Player. You'll get a window with just the bottom portion of the player, i.e. the playback controls.
    3) Using an image editor, create a still image in the desired dimensions. You can use any image editor. It doesn't matter what the image contains (although it will end up showing as a thumbnail in FCPX).
    4) Copy the image to the clipboard.
    5) Switch back to QTP, and paste the image into the new player. Don't worry that there isn't a video window showing - just paste it into the window that has only playback controls. As soon as you do, the video window appears.
    6) Advance to the end of the movie (the short, 1-frame movie), then hold down Command+V (paste) and keep holding it down to paste multiple images in. Watch the time advance. You could, if you want, just hold down Command+V until you get the length you want. But if you want a long video, there's an easier way:
    7) When you reach a few seconds (or whatever duration your patience allows), select all (Command+A) and copy (Command+C). Then hold down Command+V to keep pasting in the longer clips. Wait until you reach a longer duration, then repeat the process. So, for example, 1 second, then 10 seconds, then 1 minute, then 10 minutes, then 1 hour. Or whatever you want.
    8) Save the video however you want. I usually use File->Export with H.264, with Quality set to "Least". Just make sure you don't let it change the dimensions. If you resized the player window, depending on which "save" or "export" method you've chosen, it might default to the resized dimensions, so double check that to make sure.
That's it. You now have a template video you can use with my previous post(s).

  • I am using FCPX 10.1.3. and want to duplicate my project, and its complete resources, to a different hard drive.  When I click "duplicate", it automatically duplicates the project in its current hard drive.  How do duplicate to a different hard drive

I am using FCPX 10.1.3. with Yosemite, and want to duplicate my project and its complete resources to a different hard drive.  When I click "duplicate", it automatically duplicates the project in its current hard drive, unlike the previous FCPX that gave you options. How do duplicate to a different hard drive?

Since projects are now stored in events and events are stored in libraries, you need to create a new l;bray on that different drive or open an existing library on that drive. Then duplicate your project and move it to the new library. It will copy the media. Then use the Consolidate Project File command to round up any external assets; there may or may not be any.

  • Is there a way to import clips from AVCHD folders I have copied from my camcorder to my hard disk? With FCE I could import these clips using log and transfer.

In FCP-X is there a way to import AVCHD clips from an AVCHD file folder I have copied from my Canon hard disk camcorder to my iMac hard disk?  With FCE I used log and transfer with no problem; but, FCP-X doesn't import them. It will import AIC files that have been created in FCE from the original AVCHD files.  If FCP-X will not import these files directly from the copied AVCHD folder, is there a workaround using other software to convert the files? For example, Compressor? (Canon does not provide any AVCHD conversion software for OSX).

    Hi jphil and Tom
I have exactly the same problem but the answer you (Tom) provided did not help in my case. Trying to "Import ->From Camera" and pointing to the AVCHD folder yields the error message: "(Folder) contains unsupported files or has invalid directory structure."
    Folder structure is
    AVCHD
         BDMV
              CLIPINF
                   .CPI files
              Index.bdm
              Movieobj.bdm
              PLAYLIST
                   .MPL file
              STREAM
                   .MTS files
    AVF_INFO
         3 files (.bnp, .inp, .int)
    DCIM
         101MSDCF
              empty
         MODELCFG.IND (file)
My question is: Is that not a "camera archive" of the type you talked about in the thread? Is it on principle not possible to import the files in that format/directory structure? If not, since the shots were not taken by myself, what should I ask the guy who shot the movies to give me to be able to work with them in FC?
I work with a brand new Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4 (still very clumsy with it) on an iMac 11,3 with MacOS 10.6.8.
I downloaded the latest version of codec updates from the Apple support site but no difference.
    Thank you in advance

    Hi
Workflow automates the steps and activities in a business process according to predefined procedures and rules.
Workflow presents information and documents to the appropriate knowledge worker or agent (another entity such as a program) to make a decision or perform an activity.
Workflow tracks each and every step in the process flow and maintains an ongoing status.
Workflow also collects and reports all of the metrics associated with the execution and completion of the process.

    Hi Folks,
I am using FCPX 10.0.8 on a MPB 10.8.2 with a multi in/out audio device RME Fireface 400.
I recorded a timecode track through in 11 and routed it to out 3.
Initially it worked, although it did also play timecode through the main outputs 1&2 !!!
Now it has stopped playing TC through output 3.
Is FCPX capable of working with professional audio?
    Regards
    Donagh Long.

    You welcome

  • Glitches Convertng AVCHD using Log and Transfer

Hi, I'm converting a large batch of AVCHD to ProRes 422 using log and transfer for a project. I've converted almost all the footage, but have had to break down some longer clips because FCP7 won't convert the whole clip, it starts to act wonky. There is one large clip that I'm trying to convert a section of, that just won't convert and keeps giving me the annoying red exclamation point no matter what I do. I've tried changing the scratch disk, using the original name of the clip, unchecking "abort capture on dropped frames," changing the in and out on points--all the suggestions that I've found on discussion boards--nothing has worked. I've considered buying some external software, but am afraid the clip itself might be corrupted, though I've converted other sections of it with no problem. Any suggestions?

Hi Michael, Thanks for the quick response. I copied the clip, the whole card  to a different internal drive and FCP crashed  when I tried to transfer a section the troublesome clip. Here's part of the report I got after the crash:
    Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSMallocException', reason: '*** -[NSConcreteMutableData appendBytes:length:]: unable to allocate memory for length (75356)'
*** Call stack at first throw:
The camera is the Sony NEX-FS700. As I said before, I'm baffled. I've transferred two other sections from this same clip and also from all the other clips from this card with no problem. It was a couple of months ago, but I've not changed any settings or preferences.

  • Sharepoint Forms and Custom Lists and Workflows using Sharepoint Designer

I created a Custom SharePoint List with a custom work flow. Basically the list does the following:
Group A initiates the list, fills in all the information
Group A will check a box based on a Y/N question, the driver of the work flow is if the Y/N question is answered with an Y, then Group B will get a task assigned and an email notification will go to Group B to continue the work flow.
Group B will fill out information and check Y/N question, if answer is returned Y it will go to Group C via the same method as above.
What I need is as the form goes from one group to the next how can I make sure that Group C doesn't see the responses from Group B? How do I write this into the workflow?

I think now I can add screen shots to explain what I need to do better.
I created a custom sharepoint list. Users click on Add new Item and Group A will answer generic questions until they get to Continue to Dispute to IQ (Yes/no) Checkbox.  If they answer Yes, the workflow will start and create a task for Group B
(IQ Group). Group B will answer 4 questions (IQ Responses, IQ Notes, IQ Name and Date). Group B will check Yes or No to Continue Dispute to QA (Group C).
    See Screen shot.
What we would like for the workflow to do is based on the Yes or No check boxes (Continue to IQ or QA). If Yes is checked then the workflow will generate a task in the task list. We don't want Group B and C to see each other's responses. I set up a workflow
using impersonate steps, but am not sure if this is correct. Can you look at the workflow steps below and let me know if this is right?
