Write to file Question

I am doing some expirimental modeling with a VI that many members of this board greatly helped me get going.  Part of this modeling is the creation of an arbitrary periodic function.  I've accomplished this using 30 "Y-Value" Inputs, and a frequency to create sort of a "unit function", or basically, one period worth of the desired function, with a maximum amplitude of 1, so that it is easily scaled.
What I'm finding is that it would be nice to save these "Unit Functions" along with their corresponding amplitude and frequency to file, that I can later laod back into the program.  Thus, I need to both write the data to a file, (30 pairs of doubles, along with 2 independent doubles), and then have the ability to browse through all my saved functions, and load the desired one.
I've used the express vi "Write to Measurement File" before, but that seems like a clumsy method for this.  So I then played with the various "write to..." vi's available.
For a relatively small set like this, is there any benefit of one file type over another?  Obviously, much the data could go straight into an excel file, while it needs to be reformatted into strings to be stored in text.  I have little or no experience with bianary files.
Are any of the file types easier than others to then load from?
And is it possible to have the available (previously saved) functions selectable from a menu ring, or will I need to prompt the user?
That said, I'm just looking for some general pointers on the area.  I've read all the associated help files, and read quite a few threads on specific issue.  But being new, I'd like to hear how you professionals would approach this function.
Attached is my current code.

Given your description of what you want to do I would define a typedefed cluster that contains all of your parametric data for your data sets. You might want to allow the user to name these data sets when they save them. You can use these names as the section name. If you pass in the cluster to the write VI with the section name the data will be saved. Using the section name you can later read the data back. You can use the built in config file VI to read the section names from the config file. This will allow you to initialize your ring control. One thing I generally do for my applications is allow the user to select the ini file that want to use. That way they can save multiple versions taliored to their particular task. You could do the same thing and therefore they could have multiple data sets tailored for particular uses. Just offering that as some added flexibility for your application.
Also, I generally don't include the handling of the config files in a state machine. This functionality is generally included in my UI task which is an event structure. Reading/writing/loading config files is more event driven by the UI than something in a processing state machine.

  • Beginner question - Can't read nor write a file using NetBean...

    Hi ,
    I'm a beginner java programmer, I got trouble when it comes to read or write a file program..
    I tried 3 programs and all of them can't read the file I want to read, eventhought I have put the txt file in the same folder with my source code.
    here is the source code I got from some site
    import java.io.*;
    class FileReadTest {
    public static void main (String[] args) {
         FileReadTest f = new FileReadTest();
    f.readMyFile();
    void readMyFile() {
    DataInputStream dis = null;
    String record = null;
    int recCount = 0;
    try {
    File f = new File("mydata.txt");
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(f);
    BufferedInputStream bis = new BufferedInputStream(fis);
    dis = new DataInputStream(bis);
    while ( (record=dis.readLine()) != null ) {
    recCount++;
    System.out.println(recCount + ": " + record);
    } catch (IOException e) {
    // catch io errors from FileInputStream or readLine()
    System.out.println("Uh oh, got an IOException error! " + e.getMessage());
    } finally {
    // if the file opened okay, make sure we close it
    if (dis != null) {
         try {
    dis.close();
         } catch (IOException ioe) {
    I also have tried another from book , both of them give the same result, can't read the file...
    Please help me with this...
    Thank you very much

    To start with use the full path to the file
    i.e. File f = new File("c:\\the\\full\\path\\to\\your\\file\\mydata.txt"); // Assumes a Windows platform using the C drive
    Then check to make sure you fiel exists e.g. System.out.println("File exists = " + f.exists());
    You can even test to see if the file is readable but since you created the file this porbably is not required.

Then Line2 col.1 is (DATE)header then col.2(TIME)header then col.3(throttle voltage output)header then col.4(MAX VOUT)header then col.5(MIN VOUT) as i said this is perform before the loop with no pr

What I need to do is wait until the "While Loop" has completed to then store the MAX/MIN, but I can't seem to get the information to end up under the associated header. What do I need to set/use to accomplish this task? Thanks I've attached an excel spread sheet to give an example of where I need the values to be stored.

I juThis can become hard depending on how much data you will be writing. If you could wait and write the data all at one at the end of the while loop it becomes easier. The problem is that when you write a file it writes it in rows of data not columns. I will attach an example (LabVIEW 6.0) that demonstrates how to do this. It is a hard to describe in text. Basically I create the new columns of data and write empty strings to them on each iteration of the while loop except for the first iteration. The first iteration I write a Max? and Min? into the column information. After the while loop is completed I search the array for Max? and Min? and replace it with the appropriate min and max values.

    Mr Prakash,
    Why are you asking this question multiple times in every forum you can spell?
    Valid responses have been presented to you already two times.
    Can you explain why you can't follow them up, but continue to abuse this forum by repeating doc questions?

  • Read/Write Jar files?

    This is really a newbie question, but since there's a forum specifically for jar questions I figured it was better to start here and move it to the newbie section if y'all deem it appropriate.
    I have written a desktop application using Java 1.4.1 class libraries and intend the application to run on multiple platforms including Mac OS X, Windows XP and Linux. The application works standalone (not yet jarred) on the machine it was developed on, but now it's time to begin figuring out the distribution method.
    Right now, the application reads several files from a flat text-file database, allows the user to peruse and display the information in a variety of ways, and gives the user a method to add to the flat-file database as needed. The file is about a megabyte and is excerpted into memory at initialization, then not referred to again unless the user writes additional data. When the user generates new data, write traffic to the file is fairly light, maybe 2-3kbytes per session.
    I searched the forums for the best way to handle read/write data files for distribution and so far I haven't found anything that seems relevant, but surely the question must have been asked and answered before - maybe I'm using the wrong keywords?
    Anyway, I have three basic questions:
    1) Can I both read and write a file that's enclosed in a jar file? Or are files read-only once "jarred"?
    2) Assuming I can both read and write a file within my jar file, is reading and rewriting within the jar so inefficient as to make that a non-preferred approach?
    3) How do other folks who have a local read/write datafile in a desktop application deal with distribution? Keep the read/write datafile within the jar? Make a copy of it outside the first time the application is run and always read/write the copy outside the jar? Or some other strategy?
    Thanks for any suggestions you can give a newbie at the Java game.
    Jon

    Thanks, that was pretty much what I suspected.
    I have several data files and configuration files for this project, so I was trying to make the distribution as clean as possible. At least some of the config information can be hidden in Preferences, but I was struggling with the data files. I'll include the data files in my jar, then unpack them to the user's directory when launched the first time and work with them thereafter in the user's directory.
    Enjoy the Dukes!

  • Applet write to file on server

    Despite people's insistence that this is in the tutorial or faq, I find that it is not. Also, I have gotten conflicting information about this so I'd like to know the real answer. I want to have an applet that loads in the user's browswer, collects some data, then writes the data to a file on the server from which the applet was loaded.
    Here is what I have managed to accomplish (using my Win98 comp and Unix server):
    from just loading the applet on my computer and using relative file name to write - it made a file on my desktop (not the right place) but with the correct information
    on my comp and using absolute windows file name - it made the file in the right place and with correct information
    from trying the applet over the web on a server that allows you to write to files using both relative and absolute file names - acted dead when I pushed the button that would make it write to a file, and it didn't execute the "catch."
    I really want this to work since I want the applet to be the user interface and the applet is preferred to javascript or something else because of the nature of what I'm doing. Also, we were going to use a SQL database. I know Java has an interface with SQL but could I get my applet to communicate with our SQL database on the server directly or are we going to have to make another script for it to go through?
    thanks

    In short, you cannot write to a server without help from servier-side software such as a servlet, cgi, ASP, etc.
    If you go with something like an Oracle database on your server, it's a non-issue because the seucirty aspects are taken care of for you.

  • Write HTML Files from java application

    Hello,
    i have to write HTML files from a java application.
    I am asking if anybody can give me a hint about a good simple solution (library) which can do some of the job for me.
    i know FOP for example is good to create pdf or html from xml, but i dont want to go via xml.
    the sites i need are really very simple presents emails.
    body and maybe a link for next and pervious.
    however, thank you in advance.
    a little hint will also help :)
    Sako.

    That, too, is my question.
    Be the "server" local or remote, wouldn't JSPs still
    be the easier solution? No. it will not. because you need a server. Server for a stand alone application is not esier. according to who said JSPs are easy?
    Its very very difficult.
    >
    When answering, please clarify. I'm a bit of a newbie
    here. :)To get sence about how hard is JSP, check Struts. this is very good open source Framework to simplify the JSPs. but it still complecated enough.
    or Tapestry my lovely open srouce Framework.
    its easier than Struts. but sill complecated because of the documentation.
    All in all, using JSP is the purpose of Java in the internet. but not for me. My application will not be available in the internet, i.e. no server, i.e. no need for JSP.
    i hope that helps a little.

  • Java applet writes to file on client, no signing necessary

    Hi,
    I wonder if this is a feature or bug:
    I download and execute in my browser an unsigned applet/jar myCharts.jar from server. The applet references classes from package org.jfree.chart, which are not packed in myCharts.jar downloaded from server, but are locally stored on client in jre/lib/ext/jfreechart.jar (and therefore JVM running the applet loads and uses these local classes from local jar).
    The applet can write the file to client disk without any problem using classes from locally loaded jfreechart.jar. If I merge both jars into a big one and load it through network, file write access is forbidden.
    I am using JRE 1.5.0.3 for Windows and default java_policy file with 2      permissions added:
    permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "accessDeclaredMembers";
    permission java.lang.reflect.ReflectPermission "suppressAccessChecks";
    Is it a bug, or feature ?
    According to my opinion these 2 permissions should not result in applet ability to write files using locally loaded classes.
    Thanks for your answer
    Martin

    Hi Paul(DrClap)
    My question is ,if we are using a java
    file(servlet) which is handing httprequest , can we
    use this to handle FTP request also.As I already said, you can't use a servlet as an FTP server.
    can we able to write FTP code in above mentioned file?As I already politely pointed out, "FTP code" is ambiguous until you specify whether you mean server or client code.
    So. If you don't understand what clients and servers are, then drop this question and go away until you do understand. It's not that complicated.
    And please don't waste my time by responding with the same questions over again.

  • Write ini file not readable

    Hi all,
    I store configuration data in an ini file and give this file a custom extension.
    If users open this file in a text editor I don't want it to be readable.  Without encrypting the text how can I do this?
    I cant seem to get the binary VIs to work.  Maybe somebody could show me?
    Cheers,
    Battler.

    You haven't really defined how secure you want your data, but if you just want a simple way to hide the information from a casual user, this may work.
    Obviously, if someone really wanted to, they could figure this out.

  • Mac Pro Can't write temporary files to 10.4 Server?

    We run a file server on an old G4 tower to a network of about 8 Macs. We are having problems with our first Intel machine. We have a 3ghz Mac pro that appears to work fine except for one problem. The server doesn't allow the Mac pro to automatically write temporary files. This is a problem since we are a design firm and we use indesign for a majority of our projects. Without this temporary file users can access the same file at the same time. This is a major problem!
    Sever is running the latest version of 10.4
    Mac pro is running the latest version of 10.4 as well
    I also ran a test where I logged in from the Mac pro to one of our G5s. Indesign functioned normal in that situation.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    By looking at your post i have several questions to ask :
    Where are the temporary files stored ?
    Which data sharing scheme are you using for them ? AFP with POSIX or ACL behaviors, something Indesign uses ?
    Which versions of indesign are you using ? Some differences exists in between PPC installs and Universal install and may play havoc with that.
    There might as well be the question of ownership and rights that may differ as mentionned above in between your G5 workgroup and the MacPro.

  • Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar, etc. Malware?

    Specs:
    iMac 10.8.5
    3,4 GHz Intel Core i7
    32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, security software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar and are randomly corrupted, when I entered something in the Youtube searchbar (when it was still working) it send me to a site with sexadds.
    I tried restart my iMac and when I was logged back in, my dock preferences were reset.
    Also tried to download some security software to check my Mac for malware, but when I did, I tried several, I got a notification that said something like 'dumpfiles (don't know if this is the right translation...) damaged'.
    I'm taking screenshots from all the weird notifications I get and even three quarters off the screenshots I took in the last three hours are already unreadable.
    It started this morning when I tried opening a Premiere Pro file on which I worked the night before.
    When I tried opening it, it said the file was damaged and could not be openend.
    I tried opening it with AE or importing the file in a new project but nothing helped.
    When I tried looking for autosaves, this is the really weird part, there were none.
    Even though there are autosaves from my other projects, this one was completely gone.
    It looked like the day before never happened on my computer.
    Also when I openend Premiere all the recent projects had been wiped.
    So at first I thought it was a Premiere Pro failure.
    But than, later on the day, I tried loading some RAW files from my compact flash card.
    This is where I would get an error (error -36) which said some data cannot be read or written.
    I tried importing the files with a view different technics, from dragging to importing via Lightroom and I succeeded with Image Browser.
    But when I tried moving the files to an other folder the same error occurred.
    While dealing with this issue I wanted to put on some soothing music on youtube.
    This is when the next weird thing occurred: youtube wasn't completely loading in Chrome. I refreshed a view times, checked the internet connection and still no difference.
    When I tried in Safari it did work but when I clicked enter on the searchbar in Youtube, a page with sexadds appeared (I didn't install AdBlock in Safari...).
    I read about this 'phishing' where you are redirected to a site were a possible malware installment can take place...
    I don't know if it's connected to any of the problems I've been having but I just never experienced this on a mac, I have been a Mac user for 10 years now.
    On top of it all, internet started working worse and worse and now it's not even working at all. I had to fill in the password over and over, normally it remembers.
    Just like my system preferences, all the preferences I had with Chrome where also reset.
    Also somewhere in between I got this notification: Mac OS X must restore library to run programs. Type your password to allow.
    To me this is all very weird and suspicious. I have clearly no idea what's going on. Could this be another sort of trojan horse or malware?
    Some background info which could be helpful for solving this mystery:
    two months ago the one year old Fusion Drive in my iMac just broke out of nowhere.
    I got it replaced by a qualified apple repair store.
    When I got my computer back, all the files where gone.
    I got on the internet without AdBlock installed yet.
    A game or whatever it was, can't clearly remember, got installed by accident.
    I deleted it immediately.
    Only two weeks later, I couldn't log in to my account. It didn't recognize my password and username.
    So I brought my mac back to the store.
    Here the repair guy said it was a minor thing and he just needed to reconnect my account. He also mentioned he found a downloaded game name Sparta and it probably had something to do with the error.
    I asked him; could it be a virus? He replied no way.
    I don't know why I couldn't be a virus, just because it's a mac doesn't mean it cannot be done.
    So today I tried installing anti virus software (such as avast- was in a weird language looked like slovenian, clamxav - was in slovenian) but I couldn't install them.
    PLEASE help me! I don't know what to do anymore, I work fulltime and I need my computer, I have no time to bring it in for repair, are there other perhaps easier ways?
    Could this be the work of a virus or a malware? Or is it a disk permissions issue?

    It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
    First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
    If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
    As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

    Currently as you can see I have commented out GUI_DOWNLOAD Function Module, But it works perfect when I try to Download file to Local Desktop.
    But when I try to pass the same Contents to Application server file and then try to open it by downloading file then it opens BLANK pdf file.
    As per requirements I should be able to write the file correctly on Application server and If I dowload it from there it should open PDF file correctly.
    Let me know if you require further details about the issue.
