Writing SQL statements in piublic methods

Why shouldnt i write my sql statements in the public method itself rather than directing it to a private method and access the data base?

There's nothing specific about a SQL statement that means you should treat it differently to any other piece of code.
Place it in a public method if you want it to be visible outside the class and don't mind if a subclass overrides it. If you do care about the subclasses overriding you can make the method final.
Place it in a private method if it should only be called as part of the internal logic of the class and there is no need for subclasses to override the behaviour.

Enter Sql Statement is causing the Oracle SQL editor to freeze

I find Oracle SQL Developer's editor keep on freezing as I am writing sql statement on the editor. Is there an option to turn off the freeze.
If there is an option to turn off. Does it affect the sql editor not to automatically show objects on select object from database windown. Meaning it will not shows all table names in the dropdown box.

Yes, completion insight can have pretty bad performance and worst is the UI doesn't become responsive again until it completes.
I have both turned of, but you can lower the popup speed too, in Preferences - Code Editor - Code Insight. Even when turned off, you can still access it through CTRL-space.

Performance of the below SQL is poor, it takes plenty of time to process this.
In what are all the ways, we can optimize this SQL statement.
select dt_fld, min(fld2), max(fld2), avg(fld2),
min(fld3), max(fld3), avg(fld3)
from
(select dt_fld1, fld2, fld3 from Table1)
group by dt_fld1
I thought of rewriting it as
select dt_fld, min(fld2), max(fld2), avg(fld2),
min(fld3), max(fld3), avg(fld3)
from Table1
group by dt_fld1
What are all the other ways available like using query hints, creating materialized view, analyzing execution plan, update statistics using dbms_stats package, etc.
to optimize this SQL Statement.
Any method available in SQL itself to optimize this like using WITH clause,

You're approaching this in the wrong way. Looking at the query tells you very little about how it is being executed. Rewriting the SQL in lots of different ways isn't really an effective way to tune a statement.
You need to start by looking at the execution plan - that will tell you exactly how the query is being executed - which objects are being accesses in which order and by what method. If you'd used EXPLAIN PLAN on these two queries you would have found that they both end up with the same execution plan - the inline view in the first statement would be removed anyway giving you the second statement.

Based on the information you have provided, no-one can really answer that. You need to firstly define what the expected or acceptable run time for this statement is - that way you have something to work to. From there you need to look at the execution plan and ideally post some information about the tables, indexes, volumes of data etc.

In the example you have given, absolutely nothing - it will most likely be optimised out of the final query anyway.

Long SQL statements that spans many lines

Hi
My major problem with JDBC is dealing with long SQL statements. Such statements normally are broken into lines to ease reading, for example:
select column1, column2
from table1, table2
where table1.x = table2.y
order by column1
In java I should build this query into a String:
String sql = "select column1, column2"+
"from table1, table2 "+
"where table1.x = table2.y "+
"order by column1";
The problem is -- you may not noticed, but this sql is incorrect, because there is no space before the from clause. This error will only appear when the program is run.
Is there some technique to help writing sql statements that span many lines?

Another suggestion:
Use constants for the parts you always use and set a blank at first and last position of the constant:
final String SELECT_ALL_FROM = " SELECT * FROM ";
final String WHERE = " WHERE ";
better it happens that you have more than one space between two words than none.

Sql statement - compilation error

I have a sql statement in a method that looks something like this:
for each row in
SELECT *
FROM LASC.CMS.VW_CERTIFICATEOFGOODSTANDING1
WHERE barNum = LASC.CertificationRequest.barNum
do
display ...
end
when I try to compile it, I get an error saying:
SQL statements can only be used in functions or procedures that run on the server side.
I am fairly new to BPM, so I am not sure how to resolve this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

here is the solution that Ignacio provided.
You could go to Properties tab on the right (in Studio) for this method and inside the Method Properties section, you have on boolean property called "Server Side Method". Check it on "True".

Your JDBC driver doesn't support batch operation, try another driver(not all databases support batch'es eg MySQL)

BPC 7 MS: Which SQL statements are created for writing with input schedule?

Hi,
I wanted to know which SQL statements are created and executed if a user submits values using an Excel input schedule to an application.
When I check the correspoinding MS SQL server log files, I see that data is read from the three partitions belonging to the application and put into a temporary table, but I can't find anything about writing back to the application (presumably the WB partiton...) in the log.
There are some cryptic entries in the log file as well, but they are not human-readale... are there any BPC logfiles that could tell me which SQL statements are created and executed to write back the new values to the application? Thanks!

As far as i know, when a user send data entry from an excel schedule, it will be written in the WB table of the application (for each application, you have 3 Data tables : WB, Fact2 and Fact).
I presume that the SQL statement may be an INSERT or UPDATE statement.
Technically, the update is done by the send governor service (hosted on your BPC application server).
There is no log that will show you the SQL Statement besides a SQL trace that you have to setup in SQL Server 2005 Manager Studio.
btw, the data are written in the Relationnal database but are read from the OLAP cube. The olap Cube is split in 3 partitions (ROLAP on WB table / and MOLAP on fact and fat2). Wich mean that every new entry in WB will be automatically "updated" in the cube.
Some DM packages can directly write data in fact2 table. In this case you need to reprocess the cube to get it loaded.

Writing mulitple sql statements in 1 stored procedure

Hi all, can i know how to create mulitple sql statements in 1 stored procedure??
Eg the first sql statement will generate few results and my second sql statement will based on the first statement result to execute its second results and my third sql statements will on the second results to generate the final results which will be passed back to jsp pages as a resultset??
For the time being, i only know how to create a single sql statement in one stored procedure..i had surf through the oracle website but cant find any solution. Can anyone help me?? Samples or links to any website will do.. Thanks alot...

Help needed writing simple PL/SQL statement

I need to run the following delete statement in a PL/SQL procedure but for it to commit every 1000 rows or so. Can anyone help?

The fastest most efficient way of doing the delete is to write it in one sql statement as you have done.
Commiting every 1000 rows means you have to use row by row processing. A lot of us call this slow by slow processing.
Every time you commit in a loop , you increase the risk of snapshot too old error, plus you actually slow down the processing, as well as give you issues with regards to what happens if your process fails after x iterations. (some of your data is commited, other data is not, how do you restart the process)
The correct approach is to have appropriately sized rollback/undo segments.

Same WITH used in many SQL statements

As Tubs mentioned, views.
There only 2 basic methods of modularisation of SQL source code. Using the WITH clause (modularises in the same statement), or VIEWS (modularises across SQL statements).
Using PL/SQL functions or pipelined tables are poor choices for SQL code modularisation. And should not be considered. These tools address a different set of requirements.

HOW TO: Post a SQL statement tuning request - template posting

This post is not a question, but similar to Rob van Wijk's "When your query takes too long ..." post should help to improve the quality of the requests for SQL statement tuning here on OTN.
On the OTN forum very often tuning requests about single SQL statements are posted, but the information provided is rather limited, and therefore it's not that simple to provide a meaningful advice. Instead of writing the same requests for additional information over and over again I thought I put together a post that describes how a "useful" post for such a request should look like and what information it should cover.
I've also prepared very detailed step-by-step instructions how to obtain that information on my blog, which can be used to easily gather the required information. It also covers again the details how to post the information properly here, in particular how to use the \ tag to preserve formatting and get a fixed font output:

PS: Just noticed that it actually sometimes doesn't show the proper formatting although the code tags are there. Changing to the \ tag helped in this case, but it seems to be odd.

Odd behaviour of forum software

SQLException: Closed Connection, SQL state [null]; error code [17002]

Hello All,
I am supporting a Java 5 project on Tomcat. We've used Spring and Stored Procedure in the project.
Recently we deployed our application in a GoLive environment and have started seeing Timeout errors in log files. After around two days we also have to restart Tomcat as users are no more able to login to access the application.
Same application runs fine without any timeout issues on another environment.
The only difference between two environments is that the Go-Live env has a firewall between Tomcat and Database and the other environment hosts both Tomcat and Database on same machine (i.e. no firewall).
For GoLive env the only port open on firewall for JDBC connection is 1521 and is used in the connection string url for obtaining the connections.
When there is a Timeout error, the N/w admin guy observed that the JDBC connection was not attempted on 1521 port, but on some random port which is not open on firewall, due to which the Database server logs also do not show entry for this connection attempt as it gets blocked by the firewall.
I am not sure why a randam port should be used to connect when a specific port is mentioned in the connection url? Also what can be making this port switching?
Application uses Apache DBCP with Spring to obtain connections.
Has anyone experienced similar errors?
Any suggestions/help on this issue is greatly appreciated!

Possible to do "grant" sql statement in Native SQL?

We have a need to do a grant of access from one of our systems out for various applications. In order for this to work we need to run a grant access command on the table and are trying to put a wrapper around this so we can use an abap. Below is the code I am unit testing. Two questions. First, can a grant be done via native SQL in abap? Second, if it can be done, what is the error with the logic where I am trying to put in the table name via a parameter.

Yes it is posible.
I made one program like you want. But it need very long code.
Here I explain the idea:
1. Create Screen with input TEXT EDIT CONTROL.
    This is for input SQL Statement.
2. Get SQL Statement from Text Edit Control using method <b>get_text_as_r3table</b>.
3. Now we need to separate SQL Statement into different table.
    We Separate SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP, HAVING, ORDER, etc.
4. We need dynamic internal table to store the data.
5. Select the data according SQL statement.
      SELECT (IT_SELECT)
        into corresponding fields of table <dyn_table>
      FROM (IT_FROM)
      WHERE (IT_WHERE)
      GROUP BY (IT_GROUP)
      HAVING (IT_HAVING)
      ORDER BY (IT_ORDER).
6. Display our data using ALV GRID

Passing plsql parm to a sql statement in the procedure database link name

Would like to pass a parm that is the database link name to a stored procedure. I defined this as below. var1 is the name of the db link that I would like to pass
create or replace procedure   proc1 (var1 in varchar2) as
cursor c1 is
select num,name,city from emp@var1;
However, this is getting a plsql error in the above code   as bad bind variable, db link name expected.
Is there a method to pass a variable within a stored proc into a SQL statement that has a cursor ..

Hi,
Database links have to be hard-coded. If you really need to specify the database link at run-time, then you need Dyanmic SQL.
Why do you need to do this?   How many databases are involved? Do you have new database links all the time? The more you can say about your business requirements, the more helpful we can be.
Are there only a couple of possible database links? If so, you might consider hard-coding each of them, and branching to the appropriate one in your code.
is the real variable here the environment (Development, Test, Production) that you're in? For example, do you need to use one database link in Development, a different one in Test, and a third in Production, but you don't want to change the code when you move from one environment to another? If so, you can try conditional comilation.
