WSUS Downstream server not downloading updates

I have a windows 2012R2 wsus server setup running wsus and getting updates fine from Microsoft Updates.  We will call this server A in this example.
I have a downstream server that is windows 2012r2 and has wsus installed.  We can call this server B.  It is configured to use "Update Source" and point to A to get its updates.  SSL is not being used.
Server B says it syncs fine with no errors.  However, when i look in the content folder I see the folders (0A, 2A, 2F etc..)  but they do not contain any files.  When i run wsusutil checkhealth the following error comes up in event viewer.
The WSUS content directory is not accessible. System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found. at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.HealthMonitoring.HmtWebServices.CheckContentDirWebAccess(EventLoggingType
type, HealthEventLogger logger)
Any Suggesitons

When i run wsusutil checkhealth the following error comes up in event viewer.
The WSUS content directory is not accessible. System.Net.WebException:
The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found. at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.HealthMonitoring.HmtWebServices.CheckContentDirWebAccess(EventLoggingType type, HealthEventLogger logger)
Any Suggesitons
Looks like the content store, specifically the /Content v-dir in IIS, is not configured correctly.
If so, it's also possible that the upstream server is not downloading content correctly from Microsoft. And if the downstream server cannot get to /Content, neither can any of the clients of the upstream server.
Start by inspecting the ApplicationEventLog on the upstream server for any evidence of download failures. If they don't exist, then this could simply be an issue with IIS. Verify that the /Content v-dir is configured to point to the correct location of the
~\WSUSContent folder.

  • WSUS Downstream server not synchronizing - SQL Timeout

I'm running into problems synching a downstream WSUS server with the parent server. The first few times that the server synch'd it ran fine, then it just stopped working. The Windows Firewall is disabled and there is no proxy. I've checked all the permissions
for IIS and all required services are running. I've also tried an IISRESET, uninstall WSUS, re-installed, ran wsusutil.exe reset and checkhealth, rebooted many times. Ran the DB Cleanup Wizard on both servers. Any help woul be appreciated.

  • Wsus downstream server not showing up

    OS: Windows 2003
    WSUS: 3.0 SP1
Architecture: 3-tier WSUS, Level 1 approve/decline updates and sync with microsoft update websites; Level 2 is replica of Level 1; Level 3 is downstream servers of Level2 and configed into autonomous mode.
We have a 3-tier WSUS infrastructure in test mode. The WSUS.Level1 server gets updates directly from Microsoft Updates. WSUS.Level2 server is a replica server of Level 1 server, i.e., upstream server is WSUS.Level1.  There are more than 20 other Level 3 WSUS servers use WSUS.Level2 as the upstream servers. Level 3 servers are setup as autonomous mode at this moment.
The Level 3 servers were created from an image that were sealed and syspreped before restoring the Image.
    Microsoft Updates Server -> WSUS.Level1 -> WSUS.Level2 -> 20 other WSUS Level 3 servers
Q1: there are only three Level 3 servers showing up in the Level 2 WSUS downstream server list (should be more as we have 20 WSUS level 3 servers). When I tried to manually sync from any Level 3  server, it will show up in the Level 2 WSUS downstream server list. However, it will replace one of the three servers that is already listed. Always 3 downstream servers showing up in Level2,  always! Any idea why this happens

    <sigh>....
SYSPREP is not an appropriate tool to be used for imaging machines with *APPLICATIONS* installed, particularly if those applications use GUIDs to uniquely identify the machines, as WSUS downstream servers do.
So, ironically, only two threads earlier I answered this very identical scenario . . .
In theory, you should be able to do this to 'reset' these GUIDs...
    1. Synchronize the downstream server so that it shows up in the console of the upstream server.
    2. Set the downstream server synchronization schedule to MANUAL.
    3. Modify the Options | Update Source and Proxy Server | Update Source page to make this an upstream server.
    4. Delete the server from the Downstream Servers node of the upstream server's console.
    5. Modify the Options | Update Source and Proxy Server | Update Source page to make this a downstream server again.
    6. Initiate a synchronization.
You won't see any difference after performing these steps on the first server.
When you'll know this is working is if the second server shows up in the console after Step #6.
Repeat Steps #1 through #6 for the other three servers.

  • Server 2008 WSUS 3.0 not downloading updates

    Error calling [kernel32.dll]:CreateDirectory(\WAYNAS\Admin\WSUS\WsusContent\6F)
That's the error I get when looking through the SoftwareDistribution.log. Doesn't just apply to the 6F directory, but to any directory it attempts
    to create.
I've seen some solution for Server 2012 regarding it being a set as removable storage, however that fix doesn't apply to Server 2008: http://www.briantist.com/errors/server-2012-vmware-esxi-permissions-errors-removable-storage-auditing/
It seems to Sync fine, just doesn't download the update files.
The permissions for the directory on the nas drive are that NETWORK and Network Service have a full control.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated,
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Is your WSUS content locate under that path?
Updated the content location in the database using the wsusutil.exe command

Used wsusutil.exe to execute a reset which forced content to be downloaded (wsusutil.exe reset)

  • IPad App Store not downloading updated apps

I have an iPad 3 64GB that has been updated to iOS 8. In the last two days, the App Store will not download updated apps. It shows them with a red number, but when I click on Update, I get the circle with a square in the middle but then nothing proceeds. If I go to the individual app, it says "waiting…" but if I click it, it does not change to "paused" as it used to when waiting was shown.
My iPhone 5S is not having a problem, nor is iTunes on my computer.
Sometimes, if I sync the iPad with iTunes, the updated apps will copy over to the iPad, but not every time.
I have done a forced restart on the iPad and have also done a Reset All Settings under the General setting.
It appears that something has gone wrong with the App Store app. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to fix this short of restoring the iPad to new status and reinstalling everything?

    Hi,
Try deleting the apps with the issue from iTunes, and then download and update them again.
This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702 provides additional tips for troubleshooting issues with applications.

I am working on OS X 10.8.5 and flashplayer will not download updates because of failure to unzip metafile file. My current version is out of date and no longer works at all. I have seen post from a Yuko C. that may have some answers.

I would request you to post your Query on Flash Player Forums community.

  • WSUS in Windows Server 2012 R2 is not downloading update files.

I'm not using Proxy server and this is the only WSUS server in our environment and update source is to sync from Microsoft Update site.
Synchronization completes successfully and every update files is not downloading. When I look at the download status from the main page, it said it downloaded, but when I look at the files from updates folder, it said failed to download.
    I'm getting following error messages:
    Content file download failed.
Reason: The server does not support the necessary HTTP protocol. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) requires that the server support the Range protocol header.
    Source File: /c/msdownload/update/software/crup/2013/12/windows8.1-kb2903939-x64_a8ae5dc28899c892b46c9aa9c8aa71e2d3961a79.cab

    Hi,
This is most likely a problem with a proxy server or firewall. Since you don’t have a proxy server, then firewall could be the culprit.
Error message when you try to download a file by using the Background Intelligent Transfer Service: "Content file download failed"
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922330
Make sure your firewall support HTTP 1.1 range requests. If it still doesn’t help, try the following workaround:
If you are unable resolve this issue from the proxy/firewall side, then try these steps as a workaround on the WSUS server,
Set BitsDownloadPriorityForeground=1 using osql.exe on WSUS SQL instance.
    net stop WSUSservice
    CD "%ProgramFiles%\Update Services\tools\osql"
    osql.exe -S <SQL instance name> -E -b -n -Q "USE SUSDB update tbConfigurationC set BitsDownloadPriorityForeground=1"
    net start WSUSservice

  • Windows 7 clients not Reporting Status to WSUS (downstream server) server running Windows 2012 R2

We have recently upgraded our WSUS server to Windows 2012 R2. Now none of the PCs reporting their status to the WSUS server and not getting updates at all. The PCs are contacting the Server but not reporting their status. Stopped the Firewall on Client and
Server. BITS and windows updates services are running.
Record the system time of the Windows 7 client.
    Reboot the Windows 7 client.
Run this command from a command prompt: wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow.
    Wait =30= minutes.
Performed the above steps. Please see the updates logs from a client.

  • Server not downloading all of the assigned updates

I have a mix of Windows 2008R2 and Windows 2003 servers at one of my clients.  I approved Windows updates for the servers a couple of weeks ago.  Most of the updates downloaded and installed with no problems, but I noticed at the time that some
of the updates on several servers didn't download.  These servers are set by group policy to detect and download updates but not to install them automatically.  In WSUS, the computer "updates needed" report shows the updates under
the Approval column as "Install" but the status column shows "Not Installed," where it should be "Downloaded."
Nothing has changed since the servers were restarted a couple of weeks ago after the initial installation of the other approved updates. I looked in the Windows Update log for one of the servers, but I can't find anything that stands out.  It looks
to me as though the server finds the update it needs (there's only one outstanding on this particular server) but just never downloads it.

    Hi Deb,
Could you check the updates and install them manually?
If it works, please check if the GPO is applied properly:
    gpupdate /force
    gpresult /h C:\report.html
Check the detailed information in report.html
Note: This procedure need the privilege of the Administrator.
If the GPO is applied properly, please try to reset the Windows Update Agent.
For detailed information, please follow the steps below:

    Best Regards.

  • Software Update server keeps downloading updates when set not to

When I first setup our server (10.5.x) for software update, I looked over the option to to uncheck the box for automatically downloading updates from Apple. Since then, it has downloaded pretty much everything. I've unchecked that option and also selected it to delete old updates. It keeps downloading updates and won't delete older updates. We've since upgraded to 10.6.2. Same thing. I've even manually deleted ALL of the updates only to watch them all come back. Any clues?

Welcome to the wonderful world that is the Software Update Service
I have the same problem and have yet to find a sensible answer to this problem. I have three Macs at home and only need a small proportion of the updates that Apple supply yet no matter what I do, I can't seem to stop SUS downloading everything even though I don't want it and have told it not to download.
Best of luck getting any sense out of Apple on this. I'm going to try a home made solution to get round this problem.

  • I can not download updates for Adobe camera Raw. I get the message --- update server is not responding

I can not download an Adobe camera raw update.  I keep getting the message, the update server is not responding ---Try again.  The server may be offline temporarily off line.

    Which operating system?
    If windows, try this:
Error "Update server not responding" | CS4 Updater, AAM | Windows

  • Software Update Server not supplying updates

    Greetings All,
I started a SUS on a running server. After configuring it I left it to download all the updates. The updates appear in the list displaying that they are copied and enabled. When I then "pointed" one of the local clients towards it and ran Software Update on the client machine it returned the message that there were no new updates relevant to the machine to be found on the server. Then I tried entering the path to the index file into Safari and it came up making me believe that there were no issues with the connection between the two machines. Since the server must be the problem I then tried this command on the server:
    +grep swupd /etc/swupd/com.apple.server.swupdate.plist > ~/Desktop/update.txt+
When inspecting the update.txt file I noticed that it was completely empty. After consulting the manual yet again I looked into the /usr/shar/swupd/ directory and found that there were a vast quantity of data in the /html/content/downloads/ directory. After reading a few posts I decided to delete all this data and allow the server to download them again. Now the directory contains 15GB but the issue remains. A grep of com.apple.server.swupdate.plist still comes up empty.
The only errors that I see in the log are these:
[Mon Sep 28 10:29:28 2009] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
[Mon Sep 28 10:29:34 2009] [notice] Apache/1.3.41 (Darwin) configured -- resuming normal operations
[Mon Sep 28 10:29:34 2009] [notice] Accept mutex: flock (Default: flock)
Any ideas? Have I missed something very obvious?
Thank you for your time and effort on this forum!

I have been running Software Update Server since a few days after the Mac Mini Server came out. It really helps the other macs in my household get their updates fast - when it works.
After "a while", the clients stop seeing updates - all at the same time. So, it's not a client problem. The thing that no one else has pointed out is that the "Your software is up to date." message on the client is abnormal.
In a normal up-to-date client, the "*Your software is up to date.*" modal dialog rolls down from an empty list of updates.
In this failure case, the modal dialog rolls down from the "*Software updates are available for your computer. Do you want to install them?*" window. This suggests (to me) that the Software Update client saw some indication that an update was available, but later decides not.
Since this is hard to describe, I've taken a few pictures:

  • WSUS downstream Server synchroziation failed

    Hi All,
I have upgraded my downstream server to Windows Server 2012 R2. After upgrade my WSUS server is not synchronization with my upstream WSUS server. I am getting the below error while running the synchronization.
IOException: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

How did you do the upgrade, was it in-place, or a new machine? And did you migrate the WSUS role or just deploy a new instance?
Are there any firewalls in place?
Do you have other downstream servers connecting to the upstream, if so are those connecting ok?
Do you have any clients connecting to the upstream?
What are the build numbers on both servers?
Are there any errors in the IIS log?
