(X)HTML vs Adobe Air vs ?

Hi,
In my small office I'm using a self designed, simple file (as in dossiers, not docs) management app that I'm still working on, providing new functionalities as we go. Currently, I use plain XHTML, CSS, PostgreSQL, LDAP and calDAV.
To be able to use my screen real estate better, I was planning to update the CSS of this website, so I started looking and came across CSS3 and HTML5, so I'm really considering to jump to these new technologies in order to be able to add more complex capabilities later.
... And then I stumbled across Adobe AIR. If I'm redesigning what I've got, it might be a good idea to use this or another webapp-framework that is compatible through all major OS's (which was my first major reason to use XHTML).
Can anybody give me a solid reason to use a webapp-framework like that? At the moment XHTML fills all my needs, but I'm in no way a programmer (PHP is the best I can, and writing it takes a whole lot of time). Is there a downside to (X)HTML I'm not aware of or is Adobe AIR providing major upsides?
THX!
Zl.

Actually, HTML5 has local storage.  You can't do SQL queries against it, but it should be enough for most uses.  And what use is there for FS access other than file uploads?
Local storage is only supported in Firefox 3.5+, Safari 4+, IE8+, Chrome 4+, which aside from IE8, those versions do not have widespread corporate deployment yet.  Also you don't need FS access for uploads, it's for writing to and editing existing files on the OS, like a regular desktop app.

It also has an embedded rendering engine (webkit) which means you don't have to make your app compatible with multiple browsers.
Wait, so relying on a proprietary 3rd party plugin makes your web site more portable than one using standard (X)HTML?
Yes.  It may well be easier (and "safer" in the sysadmin's eyes) to deploy an Air application than to update everyone's web browsers.  Plus if there are multiple browsers deployed within the company, you don't have to test your app against them.

I believe it also has a lot of premade widgets available, whereas html forms have an extremely limited set.
HTML5 extends HTML forms by a lot, and jQuery and plenty of other toolkits have more featureful widgets.
True, dat.  JQuery rocks.  I've also been playing with SproutCore as a complete GUI toolkit.

  • Help: I need to make air.worker to work in my HTML only adobe air

    I need to make air.worker to work in my HTML only adobe air. I see airAliases.js has those definition.
    There is no guide or tutorial in how to use them. Can someone direct me example of how to use them?
    Also worker do not work in Adobe air.
    /*  Main thread
    var worker =  air.Worker('assets/js/test.js');
    // Setup an event listener that will handle messages received from the worker.
    worker.addEventListener('message', function(e) {
      // Log the workers message.
      alert(e.data);
      console.log(e.data);
    }, false);
    worker.postMessage('Hello World');
    /* File: test.js
    // Setup an event listener that will handle messages sent to the worker.
    self.addEventListener('message', function(e) {
      // Send the message back.
      self.postMessage('You said1: ' + e.data);
    }, false);
    above code work in ff browser but do not work in adobe air preview mode. It say worker not defined. Is it same as air.worker?

    I have no experiance with workers in AIR, but I think you are assuming that things work like HTML5 web workers, which they do not.  Check out the ActionScript3 dpcs to see how they work:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/system/Worker.htm l
    Not sure how you can bridge the webkit environment with AS3 workers.  Seems to be unchartered territory.

  • Adobe AIR is not accessible in Windows 7

    I have updated my OS to Windows 7 and now none of my Flex apps are accessible to screen readers.
    I have tested with Windows Narrator and JAWS 11.
    I have also tested the QothTheTwitter application, which is used in an Adobe Document advising developers on how to achieve accessibility in their Flex application.  This isn't accessible by the screen readers either.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/flex/articles/creating_accessible_apps_in_air_and_flex_pri nt.html
    Does Adobe AIR 2.0 have screen reader accessibility in Windows 7?  They were all working in Win XP.
    I really need to know because I'm in the middle of a MASSIVE distance learning course for a major University and it requires full accessibility.  If there is no accessibility in Win 7, I am screwed.  I've spent weeks on this and it may kill my project and the loss to my employer may cost me my job.
    Adobe staff... can you please advise me on whether accessibility for screen readers is functional in Adobe AIR 2.0 on Windows 7.  At least reply!
    Are there any working examples available, so I can see it proven?
    I really need a reply and perhaps some real input and help from Adobe about this - it's important that Adobe supports developers attempting to make their applications accessible to disabled users.
    Thanks.

    Just tested with NVDA and I'm getting some result with it.  But nothing from Windows Narrator (was fine in XP) and nothing from JAWS 11 either (also worked in Win XP) so I'm a bit worried.

    Thanks for the reply.
    I am using Windows 7, 32-bit
    I'm authoring in Flex 4 (Flash Builder) and publishing to AIR 2.0
    It's good to know there are no known differences betwen the two OSs.  I can confirm that Windows Narrator was able to speak button component labels and text component content in Windows XP but does not do so in Windows 7.  I know these are not in your list of supported screen readers but I thought it's worth mentioning anyway.
    I have the latest AIR 2.0 runtime installed.
    I am using Windows 7 32-bit
    I am using the demo of JAWS 11.0.1461
    After discovering that NVDA worked and reading your reply that there are no known differences between the OSs, I decided to re-install JAWS to see if was a problem with the reader software.  JAWS doesn't appear to like Windows 7 very much, with some errors during install this time around!   Despite this, it now appears to be reading content successfully in my newly published application.  YAY!!!  *very relieved*  So now I can confirm that I have screen reader functionality in JAWS and NVDA.
    Therefore, apologies for the previous panicky posts and thanks very much for your quick reply.  I'm finding accessibility a difficult thing to achieve and test, so your support is appreciated.
    (As an aside, neither of the installed screenreaders appear to be reading the QuothTheTwitter demo application I installed, but perhaps that is because it was built with a beta version of Flex and/or AIR ?)
    Simon.

  • Will Adobe AIR apps work on iOS (Javascript/HTML)?

    Hello,
    I haven't been able to find any definitive answer on whether Adobe AIR apps using Javascript and HTML can work on iOS.
    Anyone know for sure?
    And if so, what happens with the APIs available through these swfs that we currently include:
    networkInfoWrapper.swf
    servicemonitor.swf
    applicationupdater_ui.swf
    Many thanks
    Stephen

    The answer is no. Apps developed for AIR using HTML and JavaScript are not supported on iOS or other mobile platforms. The mobile platforms do include a StageWebView component that can be used to load and display HTML and JavaScript. However, it is entirely different than the HTMLLoader control used on the desktop platforms (for HTML-based AIR apps). You cannot, for example, call any AIR/Flash APIs from JavaScript running in a StageWebView. In general, very little communication is possible between your ActionScript application code and the JavaScript code running in the StageWebView object.

  • Adobe AIR HTML/JS application and Windows Native Installer

    Hi,
    I am building an Adobe AIR application with HTML and Javascript and I would like to know how to make an Windows Native Installer.
    I am trying to build it with Flash Pro but it keeps returning the error 'Invalid SWF file'. At the application.xml file the <content> points to my index.html file. I don't use any SWF file. When I change this to point to the SWF it does build tha installer but the application loads the SWF.
    Is there any way to build a Windows Native Installer and the initial content be an HTML file?
    p.s. I tried to extract the files from the installer file and edit the application.xml there to point to the index.html. But I can't repackage the files to a valid air native installer.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    Thank you for reporting this. The internal bug number for the issue is #2740755. The issue is currently under review and will be investigated by one of AIR team members.

  • Adobe Air HTML & JS Developing - Slow on massive Image-Tags

    Hello,
    I want to share a problem i noticed while developing an application with adobe air, based on the HTML & JS Stack, which uses multiple image-tags at the same time. I already mailed a bug but unfortunately did not get a bug number responded to refer to hit here. This post is started because i wanted to share a simple example which exhibits the problem.
    The Bug Report i mailed:
    ******BUG******
    Concise problem statement: Performance Issues with massive Image-Tags (scaled)
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Create a simple Air-Application. No need for any Air-specific library we just want the Air-Webkit to render a HTML-Page
    2.  Load ~130 Pictures with a dimension of approximately 1024 x 768 pixels.  Render each of them as a scaled Image-Tag with the dimension 100x60  pixels.
    3. Load the Page in the Air/Safari/Firefox/IE Environment (Versions: Air 2.5, Safari 5.0.2 (Win XP), FF 3.6.10, IE7)
    4. Try scrolling down/left/right/up and resizing the respective stage
    Results: The Air Environment performs worst among those 4. It reacts unacceptably slow while trying to resize and to scroll.
    Expected results: similar performance to Webkit-Engine in Safari.
    I know of one other discussion which seems to be related to a similar thing (http://forums.adobe.com/message/44913).
    The Page i used to compare the Adobe-Air rendering & scroll behaviour against the behaviour of Safari, FF and IE is posted beneath (pretty long due to the excerpt of 131 pictures taken of flicker web service).
    with best regards
    Robert

  • Embedding HTML page into Flex using Adobe AIR

    Hi,
    This is Siva Kumar. Need help in embedding an HTML in Flex .
    We are using Adobe Air. To embed an HTML in Flex we used
    <mx:HTML> tag. Its working fine but whts the problem is its
    not allowing to download files / attachements. I tried to use
    google flex iframes to resolve this issue. I am able to download
    files/attachments if I open application as web / standalone. If I
    try to open same application using adobe air its giving error like
    " ExternalInterface is not available in this container.
    Internet Explorer ActiveX, Firefox, Mozilla 1.7.5 and greater, or
    other browsers that support NPRuntime are required"
    Later wht I found is at present ExternalInterface is not
    supporting adobe air.
    Could anybody help me to resolve this issue. If anybody has
    any idea on how to overcome this issue. Please suggest me to
    resolve this issue. Thanks in Advance.
    Thanks,
    Siva Kumar

    looks like your equipmentArray is empty. Put a breakpoint inside that method to see if there is any data.

  • Adobe air, html, unicode

    Hi,
    I am trying to have Adobe AIR application to show some
    non-english languages. I am using the following HTML code within
    the body to show this character. It works correctly when i open
    this file directly on IE or Firefox.
    <p>a &#3334; b</p>
    But when i run it as AIR application, I only see the english
    letters. How do I make this unicode character appear.
    Thanks
    Binu

    Hi jjalan,
    The yield and generator functionality is only available in
    Firefox's javascript execution engine. When you are executing
    javascript in AIR, it is done by the webkit and squirrelfish. Take
    a look at
    http://webkit.org/blog/189/announcing-squirrelfish/
    If you can find a javascript library that works on safari /
    webkit, chances are high that it may work in AIR.
    Also, you can always do pseudo-threading via the age old
    setTimeout()

  • Adobe AIR for HTML/JS custom Javascript Scrollbars

    Hi,
    I would like to know if it is possible to have custom Javascript scrollbars in an Adobe AIR application.
    I have tried many jQuery plugins but nothing can style the scrollbars.
    I can only style them via CSS.
    Adobe AIR supports javascript scrollbars for HTML / iFrames?

    Filed feature request on bugbase. Vote it up if you agree!

  • Adobe air distribution problem. (AJax / html)

    Hi guys,
    I have written a sample application in javascript (ajax) and xhtml and successfully published with adobe air. The system works fine but my question is when i distribute the application (.air) I had to include all my javascript , images, xhtml. I dont have any problem in sending the images with .air package but sending javascript files is imposible that is be because, since im using ajax to show all the details I have to use full URL for all my ajax calls.
    so someone who knows about abobe air can use those same URL`s and create their own air application and steal my details from my server. (adobe air allow cross scripting)
    As a solution I have seen many applications (ex: ebay desktop) uses flash logins and check the login using flash and redirect user to a seperate page if the login is successful. so in this case i only need to package my .swf file since redirection will handdle from the flash end.
    Im not a flash developer so I wont be able to create the whole application using flash. thats why im looking for a javascript / html solution to overcome this problem.
    so my questions are,
    1. Is there any way i can publish my .air application without packaging js files?
    2. Is there is a posibility which i can use a flash login and if the login success open up a new window with the actual application and close the login window? and while logging off viseversa
    I hope you guys undestand my questions and any help highly appreciate it.
    Thanks in advanced,
    Best regards,
    niroshan

    There isn't any way to distribute an HTML/JS AIR application without the HTML/JavaScript source files. Because JavaScript is a run-time interpreted language, the HTML and JavaScript code has to be available at run time. The obvious downside to this is that the source code of your application is available in plain text on the users' hard drive.
    If your main concern is protecting data stored on the server from malicious users, the username/password strategy is probably a good one (and you wouldn't need to implement in using Flash at all -- you could do the same thing in HTML/JS.). What you need to do is:
    Set up your web server so that the user has to be authenticated with the web server in order to get any data or perform any of the calls (from ajax or anywhere else).
    When your app first starts or at some point, have a login form where the user enters their username/password for your serve. When you make the ajax calls to the server pass the username/password along (or use a session cookie, or some other similar technique for maintaining authentication).
    That way, even if an attacker knows the url of your server calls, they can't actually use them unless they have an account with you.
    From a practical standpoint, you should protect your server by requiring authentication in any case. Otherwise your only security defense is the fact that an attacker doesn't know your exact url. But there are ways to learn urls (for example, by monitoring network traffic) that make it so it isn't too hard for someone to discover the urls even without your app's source code.

  • Adobe AIR HTML Native Full Screen on Mac OS X

    I am building an application in Adobe AIR for Mac in HTML/JavaScript.
    What I want to do is when the application loads, make the application go into full-screen mode using the correct native full-screen found in OS X Lion and above.
    e.g.
    This is NOT using the displayState that Flash/Flex uses.
    If the users decides to exit full screen mode they will see the app in a native window and can re-enter full screen mode using the icon you get in the top-right of a window.
    I've found some information about an extension here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1209193
    FREObject _EnableFullScreenMode(FREContext ctx, void* functionData, uint32_t argc, FREObject argv[])
            //We should be okay to do this, even on 10.6, according to this post:
            //http://www.cocoabuilder.com/archive/cocoa/311124-implementing-full-screen-for-10-7-but-app-should-also-run-on-10-6.html
            //We can't use [NSApp mainWindow] - didn't appear to work
            //This seems to though:
            NSArray * allWindows = [NSApp windows];
            if (allWindows.count > 0)
                NSWindow *mainWindow = [allWindows  objectAtIndex: 0];
                NSWindowCollectionBehavior behavior = [mainWindow collectionBehavior];
                behavior |= NSWindowCollectionBehaviorFullScreenPrimary;
                [mainWindow setCollectionBehavior:behavior];
            //TODO: Return a boolean instead depending on if we found the main window
            return NULL;
    That looks to do what I want! But after reading the Adobe AIR docs I can't get my head around where this code should live in my app directory and how I can call it on app load.
    So in my index.html I have:
    $(document).ready(function() {  // Make window full-screen // CALL THE EXTENSION TO MAKE THE APPLICATION FULL_SCREEN  // Make window active window.nativeWindow.activate();  // Make it visible window.nativeWindow.visible = true;  });
    The initialWindow is not visible by default using <visible>false</false> in the application descriptor XML file. And is made visible and active on the document ready as shown above.
    The missing piece is loading in the extension and making the window go native full-screen.
    To break this question up:
    Where does the extension code go? E.g. do I create an extension file and put it in any particular location in the app directory?
    How do I then load the extension into the application
    Finally how do I then do the full-screen on document ready
    What happens in OS X below Lion? How did full-screen work before it was introduced?
    Hopefully I can get pointed in the right direction as the docs have totally baffled me and don't explain how the extension file is created (to me at least).

    Extensions require both native code and ActionScript code and are packed by the native extension compiler by Adobe to an ANE file. Check this tutorial: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/articles/building-ane-ios-android-pt1.html
    After compiling the extension, you can put the extensionId into your <extensions> branch in the application.xml and add the .ane as an excluded library into your AS3 project. Then you can use the extension like any other external library (swc file).
    It's also helpful to download and play around with extisting ANEs. There are some nice open source libraries here: https://github.com/freshplanet

  • Adobe Air - HTML, Javascript and Threading

    Hello,
    I am developing an application using Adobe Air - HTML and
    Javascript. What I am trying to do is to implement threading in
    Javascript. I am using implementing threading in Javascript as per
    this Neil blog.
    Click
    Here. It clearly says that this threading works only in Firefox
    2.0 and I am trying to use this in with my Adobe Air, but when I
    try to refer a function , it gives me error saying "unable to find
    it".
    I was wondering if this is the best way to go for threading
    in Adobe Air HTML application or there is some other way also.
    Thanks,

  • Books on Adobe Air development using HTML/JavaScript

    Hi,
    I always been of the opinion that one of the signs of a healthy, viable technology is the availability of books and manuals (not just articles or short tutorials online) on how to use said technology. I'm interested in Adobe AIR development for Dekstops/Tablets but I have not been able to find any new books on the topic. Most of the existing books seems to date from 2008 and are targeted towards AIR 1.0-1.5, while the latest version of Adobe Air apparently is 3.5+. So my question is - Where are all the books?
    /Sincere Regards Kris

    can find my latest answer
    here
    and a little searching will dig up more opinions.
    quote:
    Can AIR applications(developed using HTML+Js) invoke a web
    service running on a different server
    An AIR application isn't hosted on a server, so all web
    servers are "foreign" to your AIR application. An AIR app does get
    downloaded from a server, most of the time, but it doesn't maintain
    some kind of special connection to that server.
    Because of this, there are no cross-domain restrictions in
    AIR like you have in a regular web browser.
    quote:
    Can AIR application(developed using HTML+Js) detect the
    connectivity of USB drive
    AIR does not allow low-level system access, and has very
    little in the way of platform-specific capabilities. So, you'd have
    to use a high-level, platform-agnostic way of checking for the
    drive, such as by looking around to see what files are available.
    Things like USB insert notifications are way outside the scope of
    AIR.
    quote:
    I want the data from Servlet to send back to HTML page where
    I can display it on the same HTML page where user entered his
    details.
    That question isn't on-topic here. Ask on a forum dealing
    with JSP servlets.
