X200 Troubleshooting Guide .pdf "... file is damaged ..."

The file:   44c9858_a5.pdf   that I download from:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70406
gives an Adobe Reader error message of "There was an error opening this document.  The file is damaged and could not be repaired."
I have tried downloading several different times with the same results.
Anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks, Bob
X200 noob. A "few" years ago, my first PC was an IBM XT with a blazing 8.66 MHz clock, with monster 10MB hard drive and a beautiful 15" amber monitor.

same here, and we cannot see the PDF if we access directly the PDFsite at:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/
(that's wehre the file is supposed to be...)

We created a signable, saveable, Reader Extended PDF in Acrobat X 10.1.4, with a Submit button that exports it using the "PDF The complete document" format to a .php page on our website using the url: http://www.todayscihld.us/pdfscript/fdf.php?form_name=WebForm

Most of the time this works, however some of the time we get blank PDF files (<10KB), and sometimes we get filled PDF files that we cannot open in Adobe Reader X 10.1.4 - we get the "file is damaged and could not be repaired" error.  However, I can view this "damaged" pdf just fine in the Chrome built-in PDF viewer, and I can open it using Foxit Reader and Nitro Reader.  And if I open it in one of those programs and then save it under a new name, I can open the newly saved file in Adobe Reader.  So why is it that everything except Adobe Reader can open this file?
Here's one of these problem PDF files: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/65535781/PDF-112612-162749.pdf
Can anyone help me figure out what's going wrong, and what we can do to fix it?

Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

• Adobe PDF file is damaged. How can it be fixed

One of our staff created a PDF file and for some reason it is damaged.  I tried to open it with Adobe Acrobat Pro, but no luck.  It is a VERY important manual.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Simon,
There's no way to recover a damaged or corrupted pdf.
Some 3rd party pdf viewers are able to open the pdf bypassing the corruption in fonts or pdf structure. You can try using one of those and print to Adobe PDF printer to flatten the document and use Acrobat to open it.

• The digital booklet of the album I purchased won't run, Adobe Reader claims the PDF file is damaged.

I purchased an album (Avenged Sevenfold - Hail to the King, if it matters.)
On one of my authorized computers, the downloaded Digital Booklet PDF file isn't working, and Adobe Reader displays the following error:
"Adobe Reader could not open 'Digital Booklet - Hail to the King.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged."
On another authorized computer the file works fine.
I tried transferring the 'damaged' file to another computer, and it doesn't work. Meaning the file itself I get is damaged.
What can I do?
Thanks.

Digital booklets are not available for repeat download or I would suggest you simply delete and get a fresh copy. Instead use the "report a problem" links in your account history to contact the store support team. Hopefully they can requeue a working version for you to download.
BTW this is the second report I've spotted regarding this album, so there may actually be a problem with the source file. I take it you are running the latest version reader, if not it would be worth upgrading to eliminate the unlikely event that it is an issue.
PS. On the other computer where it works was this file downloaded with your account or another? Have you tried transferring the copy that is known to work to your other computers?

I have no problem downloading/opening this file....it's possible you need to update your version of Acrobat Reader.

• Generated PDF file - damaged

Hi there,
We experience some problems when generating reports in PDF formats. The generated file cannot be opened, and it looks damaged.
The XML Publisher enterprise runs on a Unix Platform, and the clients run with Windows XP SP2.
On metalink, we found this note: 296750.1 (Reports PDF Output To File Is Damaged / Corrupted When Opened in Adobe Acrobat), but it refers to Oracle Reports Developer.
Does someone know more about this?
thank you,
Liviu

Hi all
I have a requirement where I need pass few parameter & generate report in PDF output which will display data in table.
I tried using XML Publisher, where I created the rtf template & run report through my web application using url with
necessary parameters But after running the report, in the PDF output, the generated PDF file is damaged (not supporting file type error)
Am I missing some setting?

• Error while opening a pdf file.

Hi All,
I have Adobe Reader 10.1.3 installed on my system.
I am getting the following error : "Adobe Reader could not open 'abc.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged(for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)". This error is coming at random, i.e. if I open a file at one time, it will open without any problem, but at another time the same file gives this problem. Could anyone please tell me as to why this is happening and how to resolve this?

This message occurs if a PDF file is damaged, either during downloading from a website, or during transport as an email attachment.
Are you getting this error for a file that is stored on your local HD?  For this to occur at random, as you write, I can only imagine that the disk sector where it is stored is damaged.
Can you run a disk diagnostics, e.g. CHKDSK on Windows?

• Strange characters instead of PDF-file

• Pdf/zip arrive damaged through ftp

I'm using FTP to send our pdf files to our printers. I'm using Filezilla on a Mac. The printing office use pc's to download the pdf files. A lot of time the pdf files arrive damaged and can't be opened. I though to fix this by zipping all pdf files into one zip file and sending that through FTP instead. But this morning the zip file arrived damaged anyway. It doesn't happen all the time, but often.
What is causing these damaged pdf files when sending them from a mac to a pc with FTP? And why didn't it help by sending a zip file instead and did that one get damaged too?

I already thought of that and set transfer to binary in Filezilla for Mac. But pdf files or zipped files still arrive corrupted in some way at the pc end. I checked it by uploading a zip file and immediately downloading it back. The original zip file could be opened but the uploaded/downloaded one couldn't. The only different thing I can think of is the way I'm connected. Our company firewall doesn't normally allow connection to ftp sites other than our own departments. Filezilla seems to get through, but by a detour. For the ftp address I fill in our own proxy server and for username I use 'username @ ftp.externalsite.nl'. So where server would be ftp.externalsite.nl and the username would be 'username', I let it go through our proxy as servername. This way I can get a connection. Could it be that going through our proxy first, the firewall does something with the file first (scanning, processing etc.) before actually sending it further to ftp.externalsite.nl?

• Can't read PDF file from SD card!

I'm trying to read PDF files on my Life Drive, which has Adobe Reader 3.05. The files are stored on a sd card. I know these files are on it, as I can see these through Windows XP. When I launch the reader, all I get is a blank screen, with the square with the word all next to it, and beam and delete. There is no "open file" to tap on.

Hi,
Perhaps your pdf file is damaged or something. I think you can try a utility called Advanced PDF Repair to repair your PDF file. It works rather well for my corrupt PDF files. Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/apdfr/

• "The file is damaged and could not be repaired" error when trying to open a PDF in Reader

A few of our employess (only 3 out of over 100 so far) have been getting the error, "The file is damaged and could not be repaired" when trying to open some PDFs. Other people are able to open the same PDF files with no error. It's happening on about 10% of the time. I've read a bunch of threads here with this isue and tried some suggested fixes and nothing has resolved the issue. Here is what I have found works and does not work and the info on their computers:
Computers:
1 Dell Vostro desktop running WIndows 7
1 Toshiba Satellite C55 runnign Windows 8
1 Samsung ATIV Book 4 running Windows 8
All using Adobe Reader XI but we did uninstall that version and tried previous versions and still got the error.
Did Not Work:
As suggested by the company that we use online for claims adjustments where this error is occuring, we tried using a different PDF creator since the files were created using a free PDF creator by the employees. PDF995 and PDFcreator (pdfforge) did not resolve the issue. I then created the PDFs with my Adobe Acrobat, uploaded from my computer to the online program, and that did not resolve the issue.
Saving the file to hard drive and then opening in Adobe did not work.
Turning off Protected Mode and Enhanced Security did not work.
Compatibility View settings enabled in Internet Explorer 10 did not resolve the issue. The previously mentioned claims adjustment software company we use online was code for IE so is not fully compatible with other browsers.
That being said I did try to open the PDF files in Chrome and it also did not work. Same error message.
Does work:
I download the file they cannot open onto my hard drive, open in Adobe Acrobat, Save as a pdf, then email it to them and they can open it via email attachment.
If they close the error and continue trying to open the file over and over sometimes it will eventually open.
Is there a setting in Windows that is preventing them from opening a small % of files some of the time? Thanks in advance for any help!
James

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

• Cannot "print" a window as pdf then read it in Adobe Reader; Adobe says the file is damaged and cannot be opened.

Running Firefox 4.0 on an Intel Mac OS 10.5.8. Same problem with Firefox 3.6.16. You can save a Firefox window as a pdf file by using the File dropdown menu and selecting Print. Under Print, you can select PDF, then Save as PDF or Save as Adobe PDF. Firefox will save the file. If you try to open the file you get an error message that the file is damaged and cannot be opened. I did not have this problem in Safari; I followed the same procedures and the pdf file opened fine in Adobe Reader. Why is Reader rejecting the pdf file produced by Firefox when it did not reject the pdf file produce by Safari?

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• PDF files shown as' damaged or used a format preview can't recognize' once I save them to a thumbdrive

Hi,
I'm using a Macbook Pro system version 10.10.2.All PDF files (actually regardless of the format) are shown as' damaged or used a format preview can't recognize' once I copy them to a thumb-drive from the Mac. The file names end correctly as .pdf. I am sure that the thumb drive was in a good condition before I used it on the Mac and I tried two other new thumb drives but the problem persisted. Can anyone tell me how to solve the problem? Thanks a lot!!

Please repartition and format the flash drive for a Mac. It's likely formatted for a PC.
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
