Xml parsing in DOM model

Hi all,
my task is to parse a xml file and to display all the nodes in it. i used the DocumentBuilderFactory, DocumentBuilder, Document classes of dom, but i failed to do it. i failed to establish a conn using inputstream/inputsouorce... i dont knw how make it.
plzzz help me..
Thanks and Regards,

Hi there!
your inquiry probably will be better served posted in the developer section of this site:

I have a XML file i need to parse. Can please someone give me a hint how to do this(please include code). Please note that im a new in XML and my DOM structure knowledge in limited(im confused from all the tutorials).
XML code:
<Vitals>
<Hostname>sometest</Hostname>
<IPAddr>sometest</IPAddr>
<Kernel>sometest</Kernel>
<Uptime>sometest</Uptime>
<Users>sometest</Users>

So far ima at this step:
DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
try {
DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
document = builder.parse( new File("NewFile.xml") );

Just as simple text in console.
Please give me the code.
Is there any diference in document (DOM) if you create it with DFD or w/h ?
So far i have this code, but it dosnt work for me(i get nothing as output:
document = builder.parse( new File("NewFIle.xml") );
NodeList list = document.getElementsByTagName("coffee");
// Loop through the list.
for (int k=0; k < list.getLength(); k++) {
Node thisCoffeeNode = list.item(k);
Node thisNameNode = thisCoffeeNode.getFirstChild();
if (thisNameNode == null) continue;
if (thisNameNode.getFirstChild() == null) continue;
if (! (thisNameNode.getFirstChild() instanceof org.w3c.dom.Text)) continue;
String data = thisNameNode.getFirstChild().getNodeValue();
System.out.println(data);
}

• XML parsing with DOM

I'm using xerces to parse an XML file and am running in to trouble. Do you have to parse child nodes before attributes? I do this in every node except for one called "table" in my parser. However, I have an abstract class called "Table" that is subclassed by Table1D and Table2D, and I need to parse the attributes to know which to instantiate.
The problem is, I have a child node called scale. For some reason, scale is being parsed as if it were a table.
Here is a look at my unmarshallTable method. Ignore the lack of exception handling.
private Table unmarshallTable(Node tableNode) {
Table table;
if (unmarshallAttribute(tableNode, "type", "unknown").equals("3D")) {
table = new Table3D();
} else if (unmarshallAttribute(tableNode, "type", "unknown").equals("2D")) {
} else {
//exception
return null;
table.setName(unmarshallAttribute(tableNode, "name", "unknown"));
if (table.getType().equals("2D")) {
((Table2D)table).setFlipX(Boolean.parseBoolean(unmarshallAttribute(tableNode, "flipx", "unknown")));
Node n;
NodeList nodes = tableNode.getChildNodes();
for (int i = 0; i < nodes.getLength(); i++) {
n = nodes.item(i);
if (n.getNodeType() == Node.ELEMENT_NODE) {
if (tableNode.getNodeName().equals("table")) {
if (table.getType().equals("2D")) {
if (unmarshallTable(n).getType().equals("Static Y Axis")) {
((Table2D)table).setStaticYAxis((Table1D)unmarshallTable(n));
} else if (table.getType().equals("3D")) {
if (unmarshallTable(n).getType().equals("X Axis")) {
((Table3D)table).setXAxis((Table1D)unmarshallTable(n));
} else if (unmarshallTable(n).getType().equals("Y Axis")) {
((Table3D)table).setYAxis((Table1D)unmarshallTable(n));
} else if (tableNode.getNodeName().equals("scaling")) {
table.setScale(unmarshallScale(n));
} else {
// unexpected element in Article
} else {
// unexpected node-type in Article
return table;
}

Doh! I got it.
if (tableNode.getNodeName().equals("table")) {
should be
if (n.getNodeName().equals("table")) {

• Oracle XML Parser validation against XML Sxhema

Hi,
I am developing a program in C++ on Unix, that does parsing on an XML document. For parsing I am using "Oracle XML Parser" [using DOM API]. My question is, Can Oracle XML Parser validate xml document against an XML Schema file also? I have read in many tutorials that it can validate against DTD. Please clarify my question as early as possible?
Regards,
Raghuram.

Hi Kulkarni,
I think you are trying to retrieve the text of the parent element of book. For example if this is the xml element
<bookdetails>
<book>Harry Potter</book>

<price>34.55</price>
</book>
</bookdetails>
You must be trying to retrieving the text of bookdetails.
Check XMLNode.getNodeName() to retrieve the name of the node.
To get 'Harry Potter' as output you need to traverse till book and then use XMLNode.getText()
You can check the 'getQuestions()' method in Survey Sample
to know how to tranverse to any element of an XML using Java.
The Survey Sample is located at
http://otn.oracle.com/sample_code/tech/xml/survey/content.html
Download the sample and unjar it. The location of Analyser.java is
SurveySample\code\Survey\src\oracle\otnsamples\survey\business\Analyser.java
Have a look at it.

Hello
I am getting java.lang.ClassCastException: oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLText cannot be cast to org.w3c.dom.Element error. This code is in java which is present in java embedding.
The SOA is parsing the xml in java code using oracle.xml.parser.v2 . This wont be a problem if the SOA uses default w3c DOM parser. How do i force SOA to use w3c DOM parser.
Is there any thing i can do with class loading?
Kindly help.
Regards

Can you paste your java code here ? I assume, you must have tried type-casting.

• XML Parser for Java v2. Applying XSLT to DOM tree

I encountered pretty weird behavior of XML Parser for Java v2.
While applying XSLT to XML document created in memory using DOM
interface I couldn't access element attributes. For example,
given the XML document:
<root>

Value of Item 00001

Value of Item 00002

</root>
and XSLT:
<xsl:template match="/">

XSLT Test

<xsl:for-each select="/Error">

Error
<xsl:value-of select="."/>
</xsl:for-each>

<xsl:for-each select="/root">

<xsl:text>Attribute</xsl:text>

<xsl:text>Value</xsl:text>

<xsl:for-each select="Item">

<xsl:value-of select="@ID"/>

<xsl:value-of select="."/>

</xsl:for-each>
</xsl:for-each>

</xsl:template>
If I build DOM tree by parsing XML file the resulting HTML
document after applying XSLT will display
Attribute Value
00001 Value of Item 00001
00002 Value of Item 00002
But if I build DOM tree using following code:
XMLDocument xDoc = new XMLDocument();
Element root = xDoc.createElement( "root" );
xDoc.appendChild( root );
Element elem = xDoc.createElement( "Item" );
elem.setAttribute( "ID", "00001" );
root.appendChild( elem ).
appendChild( xDoc.createTextNode( "Value of Item 00001" ) );
elem = xDoc.createElement( "Item" );
elem.setAttribute( "ID", "00002" );
root.appendChild( elem )
.appendChild( xDoc.createTextNode( "Value of Item 00002" ) );
the same XSLT will produce the following HTML output:
Attribute Value
Value of Item 00001
Value of Item 00002
So the value for the ID attribute is not displayed. At the same
time I can access this attribute using DOM interface. For
example, following code
NodeList nList = xDoc.getElementsByTagName( "Item" );
Element e;
for( int i = 0; i < nList.getLength(); i++ )
e = (Element)nList.item( i );
System.out.println( "ID: " + e.getAttribute( "ID" ) );
produces an output
ID: 00001
ID: 00002
Here is the code for applying XSLT to DOM tree:
DOMParser parser = new DOMParser();
parser.parse( new FileInputStream( "test.xsl" ) );
XMLDocument xsldoc = parser.getDocument();
XSLStylesheet xsl = new XSLStylesheet( xsldoc, createURL( "" ) );
XMLDocument out = new XMLDocument();
out.appendChild( new XSLProcessor().processXSL(xsl, xDoc) );
out.print( new FileOutputStream( "test.html" ) );

thanks!
p.s. cross-posting with Re: Casting/Converting XMLType to XMLDocument? (but i think this forum is more relevant).

Hi,
thanks for the suggestion: i have written the code shown below. It results in a casting error.
As far as i know, i don't use a oracle.xdb.dom.XDBDocument, i only use a oracle.xdb.XMLType as the input parameter for my conversion-method:
any new suggestions ???
p.s. the second method which is commented does work, but is a bit verbose.
private static oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLDocument convert2XMLDocument(XMLType xml) {
// simple version (should work according to tech. doc. 9i r2/ 10g r1 database)
oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLDocument doc = null;
try {
// n.b. probleem is dat XMLType.getDOM() een w3c.Document object teruggeeft ipv een oracle.XMLDocument.
System.out.println("convert2XMLDocument(): casting w3c.Document naar oracle.XMLDocument.");
doc = (oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLDocument) xml.getDOM(); // public org.w3c.dom.Document getDOM()
System.out.println("convert2XMLDocument(): done casting w3c.Document naar oracle.XMLDocument.");
catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace(System.out);
return doc;
private static XMLDocument convert2XMLDocument(XMLType xml) {
// complex version: works ok !!!
XMLDocument doc = null;
try{
DOMParser parser = new DOMParser();
parser.setValidationMode(oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLParser.NONVALIDATING);
parser.setPreserveWhitespace (true);
parser.parse(new StringReader(xml.getStringVal()));
doc = parser.getDocument();
catch ( XMLParseException e ) {
e.printStackTrace(System.out);
catch ( SQLException e ) {
e.printStackTrace(System.out);
catch ( Exception e ) {
e.printStackTrace(System.out);
return doc;

• XML Parser Message: Element series is not valid for the content model

Hello,
I work with FrameMaker 8 and DITA.
I change the element prodinfo in the topic.edd from:
General rule: (prodname), (vrmlist), (brand | series | platform | prognum | featnum | component)*
to:
General rule: (brand | series | platform | component)*
When I import the element definition to the template everything is okay.
When I insert the elements metadata, prodinfo, brand, series, platform and component into a topic I get the XML Parser Message that the element brand is not valid for the content model (prodname,vrmlist, ((brand|series|platform|prognum|featnum|component))*).
When I delete the element brand in the topic I get the XML Parser Message that the element series is not valid for the content model (prodname,vrmlist, ((brand|series|platform|prognum|featnum|component))*).
I change the element prodinfo in the topic.edd to:
General rule: (brand)?, (series)?, (platform)?, (component)?
...and get the same Parser Message.
I do not understand that. Is not it allowed to change the EDD this way without changing the DTD?
With kind regards
Nina

Hi Nina...

In general, the EDD and DTD need to sync up. You can remove elements from an EDD element definition's general rule, as long as the resulting elements are still valid to the DTD. But if changing a general rule creates an invalid structure, you'll need to also change the DTD to allow the revised structure.

With DITA, it is common to remove inline elements from block-level elements. For example, you might want to remove the <msgblock>, <msgnum>, and <msgph> elements from the general rule of the
element .. this can be done easily in the EDD and the resulting structure remains valid with the DTD.

However, what you're doing leaves the <brand> element as a child of <prodinfo> .. which is invalid. You'll get these errors when saving a file, since this is when the file is validated against the DTD.

I do not recommend modifying the structure in such a way that requires you to modify the DTD. If you really need to do this, then you should consider making a specialization to support your revised model.

I hope this helps.

Cheers and Happy New Year!

...scott

• Loading XML document for DOM parsing

Can anyone suggest other API's to load a XML document into memory so they can be parsed using the DOM with Java?(e.g. The "load(url)" interface method specific to IE5)
Thanks

Check out the DOMSample.java code came with the XML Parser for Java v2 download.

• DOM XML parser program

Hi,
I am trying to write a sample program using DOM xml parser in java to read the values in a XML file.
please suggest me what are all the things I have to do for that.
I know Java and XML. I want to know how to access values from XML file in java.
Thanks

• Installing a DOM XML Parser

Hey, I apologize for the newbie question but I suppose this is as good a place as any for it. I'm in desperate need of a DOM XML parser and have decided upon the Apache parser, "Xerces," featured here. My problem is this, every time I make a move towards installing it, I get all mixed up at the mention of my "Apache, ant and forrest" installations that I am apparently supposed to have in order for this library to work. My question is, is this library only for use in web-based applications and thus requires Apache in order to run? I ask because the application I'm working on is simply for desktop usage and the users it will be distributed to will not have Apache installations. If somebody could help me out with a quick little walk-through on the installation of this library it would be IMMENSELY appreciated.

• DOM XML Parser in Stateless Session Bean- Not able to generate Container

I am trying to do some XML Parsing using a DOM Parser in a Stateless Session Bean. I am importing org.apache.xerces.parsers.DOMParser and trying the following statement DOMParser parser = new DOMParser();
Even though I am able to compile and generate the initial jar file. When I try to generate the container using the Weblogic Deployer GUI tool, the process keeps on going(I mean that I see the small window saying Container Generating working) and it never stops.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Many thanks ksaks for replying.
Actually day before yesterday we were able to do something like this. But then I kept this thread open only to see if experts have some good way of doing this.
What I mean is if this way is industry standards in terms of design and does it follow the most popular way how experts do it?
I am asking this as WebProjects have webcontent/web-inf directory wherein we put those xsds and property files, but we do not have anything like this in an EJB project. so was just wondering if this is the correct way of doing it or not.
I am still following this approach because I had to proceed further in my development. Confirmation would erase any other doubts on this.
Hope you find time to reply.

• Updating XML file using DOM parser

Hi,
Can someone help me, how to update following XML file using DOM parser.
The following is my XML file.
<students>
<student>

</student>
<student>

</student>
<student>

</student>
<student>

</student>
<student>

</student>
</students>Consider, I will input 2 fields, ie., id & name. For the matching Id, the name has to be updated.
Though, I have achieved this, but I am unable to update the value for 3rd record, & 5th record ie., id=3 & id=5. Since, these are blank.
Thanks.

Some
elements have a child node which is a text node. From what you say it appears you know how to change those text nodes.
The other
elements don't have any child nodes. But you want one. This suggests to me that you need code that creates a text node and adds it to the
element as its child.
