XMLELEMENT and suppress character conversion for brackets etc...

Hi,
I want use XMLElement, XMLAgg to create a large XML-file from database.
However I have the problem that I already SELECT valid XML chunks from
the database. I this case I don't want a character conversion,e.g.
open angle bracket (<) becomes <
quotation mark (") becomes "
and so on.
Is it possible with my Oracle 9.2 ?

Hi,
ok finally I think I found now a solution for my problem which is:
printing a large XML file in one transaction within sqlplus.
I let a function create the XML and write it to a CLOB variable.
In sqlplus I do simply
-- 1 GB is acceptable
SET LONG 1073741824;
SPOOL myspoolfile
SELECT MYFUNTION FROM DUAL;
I still have to proof it with mass data.

I'm confused about sound on my iPad 2. I know it has speakers and it makes sounds for notifications, etc. But when I play the Time Warner TV app, there is no sound. Do I need to buy speakers or headphones?

Here is my situation, iPad 1 Time Warner app works fine with or without headphones, ipad2 I can unplug headphones and it works but when headphones are plugged in I can barely hear it even cranked up, my husbands ipad2 works fine with both so what that tells me is that there is something physically possibly programmed differently. It really makes no sense. I might just take my ipad2 back and swap it out. It is weird all the other sound through the iPad comes through on headphones and speakers fine. You are not alone with your time Warner app sound issues.

• Expdp with network_link and different character sets for source and target?

DB versions 10.2 and 10.1
Is there any limitation for implementing expdp with network_link but target and source have different character sets?
I tried with many combinations, but only had success when target and source have the same character sets. In other combinations there was invalid character set conversion (loose of some characters in VARCHAR2 and CLOB fields).
I didn't find anything on the internet, forums or Oracle documentation. There was only limitation for transportable tablespace mode export (Database Utilities).
Thanks

Hi DBA-One
This link
http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14215/dp_overview.htm#CEGFCFFI
is from Database Utilities 10g Release 2 (10.2) (I read it many times)
There is only one thing about different character sets.
I quote:
Data Pump supports character set conversion for both direct path and external tables. Most of the restrictions that exist for character set conversions in the original Import utility do not apply to Data Pump. The one case in which character set conversions are not supported under the Data Pump is when using transportable tablespaces.
Parameter VERSION also doesn't play role here, because the behaviour (character set) is the same if I use for target and source only 10.2 or (10.2 and 10.1) respectivly.

• Lanovo ix4 300d and european character set for samba shares

Hi,
I am installing a couple of IX4-300d at a client site, struggling to set and fix the samba character set for the Windows shares. Here in Italy everyone is used to put western european characters into filenames (for example è ò ° €) but the NAS acts wierdly when it finds such caracters in folder names and file names.
As you know samba gives the possibility to declare dos charset= ISO8859-1 and unix charset= ISO8859-1 in the smb.conf file but the option is not present in the IX4 setup pages.
Is there an easy way to circumvent the problem and fix this option? As it is now the machine is fearly useless, at least if you need to migrate files and folder from a server or storage with ISO8859 charset already applied.
thanks a lot

• How to find 12,13 and 15 character products for 10 char product

Hello Experts,
I Hope you are doing good.
I am unable to find solution for the given below,Its very urgent.
I have to find the 10 character products first. For every 10 chars product i have to find all the 12,13 and 15 chars product.for example
0010101213---10 chars product
0010101213S21---13 chars product
0010101213B1225--15 chars product
We can see the products in customs mgmnt->master data->maintain products->display.
It is very urgent, any solution will be appreciated.
Thank you In Advance.
Regards,
Anand.

Hi Dave and Aman,
Really Thank you very much for your reply.
Explaining question more clear here.
Every product will have classification right! That is happening the same here that is , I have a object saying that 10 chars product will have some grouping{(Ex: ABCD Z) (this can be seen in the path sap menu legal->customs mgmnt->master data->maintain products->display->legal control tab)} ,for this 10 char prroduct i have to find 12,13 and 15 char products first(for example0010101213 ---10 chars product
0010101213S21---13 chars product
0010101213B1225--15 chars product ) and then check the grouping for these 12,13 and 15 products.
After that if there is no grouping for these 12,13 and 15 products, i have to assign 10 char product grouping to all three types of products.
that is the main requirement.
If not ths is clear please let me know.
My qyestion here is
1) how to find 12,13 and 15 chars product for a 10 char product for example
0010101213 ---10 chars product
0010101213S21---13 chars product

• Forms and database character conversion

Hi,
We currently have a database setup to use a non-utf8 characters set, I believe it is set up for western european languages only. We now want to expand our database to include support for other languages such as arabic and japanese. To do this we would like to make a copy of our existing database and change the charecter set to UTF8.
We also have a Forms application currently using Forms 5 and due to be upgraded to 11g.
What sort of implications willl changing the database character set have for the existing Oracle Forms? What sort of changes if any will we need to make to the Forms in order to get them working with the new character set?
Thanks for your help.

• Workflow and optimum video conversion for iPhone/iPod

During my work, I produce video footage which is generally regular 16:9 aspect ratio, but quite large in size.
I was wondering how people prepare video for import into iTunes and use on an iPod/iPhone. Ideally I'd like to compress the size of the video to the smallest that it will show cleanly on these devices. To make matters more complicated, I have an Apple TV too which I'd like to show these videos on, but the quality needn't be exceptional.
I'm interested in your workflow, settings, file format etc and if you use any automator tasks etc to speed up the process.

• Promblems with character conversions for 0x91

I have a string I trying to create from an array of bytes.
I'm using new String(byte[]) to do this, but some of the characters get corrupted.
In particular, the byte 0x91 gets converted to the character 0x2018.
Why is this happening, and how do I stop it?
Thanks in advance,
Bill

Should have provided more information.
I have a JSP that will display these strings - they're hebrew characters. In the JSP I set the Character Encoding to UTF-8, and the resulting HTML uses the UTF-8 charset.
When I display the strings as they are (unicode), the JSP converts all the characters to 0x3f - I get a bunch of ??????? displayed. So I was playing around with the strings, and found that if I do a
byte[] tmp = str.getBytes("UTF-8")
and then do a
str = new String(tmp)
and display that from the JSP, I get most of the hebrew characters displayed properly - with the excption of 0x91 and a handful of other characters.
But from your response, it sounds like I'm taking the wrong route to the solution. Any ideas why the JSP isn't converting the unicode to UTF-8?

• XMLType and Special Character Conversion

I'm looking for something to convert special characters like &amp to the actual & it represents.
I can't seem to find a method using
extract for an xmltype or xslprocessor.valueOf
I'm sure its something simple, but I'm having trouble putting my finger on it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

Let me restate. When I use and XMLDom and the xslprocessor.valueOf function, "&amp" is converted to "&"
when I use v_char2 := v_doc.extract('/LoanPkg/Property/PRPTY_STRT_NME/text()').GetStringval;
It doesn't convert it.

• My iPhone is not receiving mail but these messages continue to flash at the bottom of the screen: Checking for messages, Updated just now, checking for messages, etc. After a minute or so it will flash downloading 1 - 32 messages but nothing is received

My iPhone is not receiving mail but the following messages continue to flash over and over at the bottom of the screen: "Checking for messages, Updated just now, Checking for messages", etc. After a minute or so it will flash downloading 1 - 32 messages but nothing is received and then the "Checking for Messages," etc. starts back again. I turned the phone off for 30+ minutes and also tried to reset it, but the problem continues. Any ideas on how to solve the problem?

Double click the home button and swipe up the messages app to stop it, then open the app again. This pretty much completely stops the process and freshly opens it again, resolving problems at times. I have had this happen before as well on my iPad, I get a banner, check messages, and nothing new is there.
If that doesn't work, close the app like suggested above, but then restart the phone by holding down the home and lock button for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears.

• UTF8 character set conversion for chinese Language

Hi friends,
Would like to some basic explanation on UTF8 feature, what does it help while converting the data from chinese language.
Would like to know what all characters this UTF8 will not support while converting from chinese language.
Thanks & Regards
Ramya Nomula

Not exactly sure what you are looking for, but on MetaLink, there are numerous detailed papers on NLS character sets, conversions, etc.
Bottom line is that for traditional Chinese characters (since they are more complicated), they require 4 bytes to store the characters (such as UTF-8, and AL32UTF8). Some mid-eastern characters sets also fall in this category.
Do a google search on "utf8 al32utf8 difference", and you will get some good explanations.
e.g., http://decipherinfosys.wordpress.com/2007/01/28/difference-between-utf8-and-al32utf8-character-sets-in-oracle/
Recently, one of our clients had a question on the differences between these two character sets since they were in the process of making their application global. In an upcoming whitepaper, we will discuss in detail what it takes (from a RDBMS perspective) to address localization and globalization issues. As far as these two character sets go in Oracle, the only difference between AL32UTF8 and UTF8 character sets is that AL32UTF8 stores characters beyond U+FFFF as four bytes (exactly as Unicode defines UTF-8). Oracle’s “UTF8” stores these characters as a sequence of two UTF-16 surrogate characters encoded using UTF-8 (or six bytes per character). Besides this storage difference, another difference is better support for supplementary characters in AL32UTF8 character set.
You may also consider posting your question on the Globalization Suport forum which pertains more to these types of questions.

• Data conversion for communication between Java and C/C++ program

The real problem, i guess, is about data type conversion between Java and C programs. For instance, and int is supposed to be 4 bytes in Java, and also in C/C++. But, as far as I know, the size of and int in C depends on the processors architecture, so if it were a 64 bit arch., size of and int, double, etc. in C, would change. The real scenario would be a communication between a 32 bit machine (Java) and a 64 bit machine (C/C++).
First of all, is this assumption correct?
If so,
how is it possible to deal with this problem in Java?
Is there any way to know 'type length' automatically? or
would it be necessary to modify the Java program to work with a C program in 32-bit or 64-bit arch?
thx in advance

cotton.m wrote:
Yes you should develop the C part of the protocol first and then build from there.
See http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5243547 for a previous discussion of this topic.
I understand what you mean, also the topic you referenced. I will explain the situation a bit more. The protocol is already defined: (16 bits message size, 16 message id, 32 bit time, etc.); it is also defined in C (structures and so on). So it would be easy to write my Java code using the specified protocol in bytes, and C types wouldn't be necessary to be considered. But, let's say that the C code can't be modified, and I thought (and don't know yet if its correct), that size of C types CAN changed depending on architecture. So if size changes for C types (code is specified in short, int, etc, and not in bit format), it all would be a mess, if I don't implement something in my Java code.
cotton.m wrote:
I don't believe that 32 or 64 bit enters the equation here at all.Maybe 32 o 64 doesn't mind, but sparc or PC could take a point here. Communication would be between a sun solaris sparc and windows x86 PC. But if type size in C/C++ does not change, I wouldn't really have any problem then...
The situation is not ideal, I know, but is what I have; and I think I could have problems if I run the C program in other machines; so I would have to try to solve it whithin my Java Program.
I hope it is clear now what I need.
thx

• Character conversion and NLS_LANG

Hi,
The Oracle doc says that character encoding conversion for Java programs using the OCI driver is dependent on NLS_LANG. But the description of this was a bit confusing. As per the doc
"The JDBC OCI driver transfers the data from the server to the client in the character set of the database. Depending on the value of the NLS_LANG environment variable, the driver handles character set conversions in one of two ways.
1)If the value of NLS_LANG is not specified, or if it is set to the US7ASCII or WE8ISO8859P1 character set, then the JDBC OCI driver uses Java to convert the character set from US7ASCII or WE8ISO8859P1 directly to UCS-2.
2)If the value of NLS_LANG is set to a non-US7ASCII or non-WE8ISO8859P1 character set, then the driver changes the value of the NLS_LANG parameter on the client to UTF-8. This happens automatically and does not require any user-intervention. OCI uses the value of NLS_LANG to convert the data from the database character set to UTF-8; the JDBC driver then converts the UTF-8 data to UCS-2. "
Now refering to case1, assume the database character set is multibyte.Does this mean that the OCI C libraries first convert this to US7ASCII or WE8ISO8859P1 and then the Java driver does the conversion from US7ASCII or WE8ISO8859P1 directly to UCS-2. If that is the case, wouldnt information get lost during the first conversion.
Thanks,
Tom.

Yes this is true. For a multibyte database character set caution
must be taken that the client application NLS_LANG is not
US7ASCII or WE8ISO8859P1 or data loss can occur. An effort will
be made to remove the NLS_LANG dependency in a future release
because the current solution is imperfect.

I too was having the same problem However, I could access both the menu bar and the dock by hovering my mouse over them so it wasn't a huge problem but I prefered having it there anyway. I was not in full screen mode and I could still go into full screen mode if I wanted to. I found the easiest solution was to just quit safai and restart it, but it might not work for you considering you couldn't access you menu bar either way.
I found this article that allows you to hide/show the menu bar and the dock through TextEdit (didn't work for me) http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2009/07/hide-the-menubar-or-dock-in-specific-app s.html It is pretty old so it might not work for lion and a bit risky if you don't know what you're doing so I wouldn't really recommend doing it this way.
And KSheppard, I know it's not really any of my buisness, but the way to get answers to a question isn't by insulting others and being quick-tempered. Even if you feel like you were insulted first, don't try snapping at people who aren't obligated to help you. Honestly, it just makes everything easier if everybody is cooperative and polite.
