XSL Performance

Has anyone conducted a performance evaluation of the Oracle XSL
processor? I am currently using the LotusXSL processor and am
finding it VERY CPU intensive. It is prohibitively slow.
Does anyone have any comparisons?

Since this message exists and there are no responses in a month,
I'm guessing that this continues to be an unresolved problem?
I'm getting ready to bail on XSL because of the performance.
I'm seeking out a better performing XSL processor. Anyone know
of any?

  • XML Parsing with XSL Performance lag

    Hi there
    I should qualify this post by saying I am fairly new to EJB's and have based the below on a Java Working with XML Tutorial I read.
    I have an EJB which is being developed to parse XML documents with an XSL stylesheet and return HTML for display. The code is working fine however there is a fairly hefty performance lag when using the EJB to generate the HTML as opposed to the straight HTML. I am getting an average response time of 95000ms using the EJB as opposed to 45000ms when viewing the straight HTML. The code I am using to do the parsing is :
    DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
    Document document = builder.parse(dataFile);
    // Convert docs into StreamSource
    StreamSource stylesource = new StreamSource(styleSheet);
    StreamSource source = new StreamSource(dataFile);
    StringWriter strWrite = new StringWriter();
    StreamResult result = new StreamResult(strWrite);
    // Use a Transformer for output
    TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
    Transformer transformer = tFactory.newTransformer(stylesource);
    transformer.transform(source, result);
    There is then some error handling and the strWrite object is placed into an array to be returned.
    I am really looking to find out if the performance lag I am experiencing is normal or if there is anything I can do to improve the speed of the code.
    All comments and help is most appreciated.
    Cheers
    Justin.

    You should be able to increase performance by caching Templates objects in memory as a previous post suggested.
    Here is some untested code:public final class TransformerCache
         private static Map cache = new Vector();
         private TransformerCache(){}
         public static Transformer getTransformer( String filename )
              if( ! cache.containsKey( filename ) )
                   TransformerFactory tf = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
                   Templates template = tf.newTemplates( new StreamSource( filename ) );
                   cache.put( filename, template );
              return ( ( Templates ) cache.get( filename ) ).newTransformer();
    }This aproach works in a clustered environment, just bear in ming that there will be an instance of the cache on each server instance (virtual machine).

  • XML to XSL Performance

    Hello All,
    I've been involved with many web-apps that produce XML and then use XSL to provide the look and feel. My question is whether you have found that XSLT causes a bottle neck on CPU time when the server is busy. Is there a way round this? Sometimes time spent in XSL can be upto 0.8 to 1 second as the server becomes busier!
    Thanks
    Mike

    I haven't tried caching the XSL templates... is this likely to speed up processing by much?
    The reason I called this a bottleneck was because I loaded the server with a lot of requests ( around 50 clients ) constantly hitting the server as soon as a reply was received, and the server ground to a halt and began to take a long time to process XSL due to CPU at 100% utilisation.
    Thanks
    Mike

  • Editing xml in java

    hello everybody,
    i'm trying to write a java application for editing xml documents.
    I know It is possible to use xsl stylesheets to transform xml documents but it is possible to display the result of the transformation process in java?
    I mean,
    I make the transformation XML --->XSL ---->but i don't want to view the output in a browser!! I want to view that in my java application !!
    Can i display this output in swing objects?? Can i modify this output??
    Thanks to all.

    I make the transformation XML --->XSL ---->but i don'tYou mean XML+XSLT=>XML
    want to view the output in a browser!! I want to view
    that in my java application !!
    Can i display this output in swing objects?? Can i
    modify this output??Here is an example for saxon:
    // I didn't compile or run this code, please refer to API documentation for more detail instructions.
    // Transformer factory.
    TransformerFactory transformerFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
    // XML source file
    File source_file = new File("xml_file.xml");
    // output file
    File outputFile = new File( "output.out");
    // Transformation source
    Source source = new StreamSource(source_file);
    // Transformation result
    out = new java.io.FileOutputStream(outputFile);
    StreamResult result = new StreamResult(out);
    result.setSystemId(outputFile.toURI().toString());
    // Must be synchronized by factory, since factory isn't thread safe
    synchronized (transformerFactory) {
    // obtain a transformer
    transformer = transformerFactory.newTransformer(new StreamSource(new File("xslt_template.xsl")));
    // perform transformation
    transformer.transform(source, result);
    As you can see, you easely can redirect result to your Swing editor.
    If you don't want to bother about streams and so on, you can use this example to write the result into the file, and open the file in your editor.

  • Performance of XSL Mapping in the ABAP Engine

    Hi All,
    Is the performance of XSL Mapping in the ABAP Engine better than java and graphical mapping. • JDeveloper performance with XSL Mapper

    Hi All,
    Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question since it has to do JDeveloper performance with SOA and not ADF.
    In the XSL Transformation mapper tool, whenever I do an auto-map between two large schemas, my JDeveloper memory usage hikes up to about 1.3 GB and then both the JRE and JDeveloper hangs although the transformation finishes. The problem is that sometimes it hangs before you can save it. It almost seems like a memory leak.
    NOTE: I am not getting any out-of-memory error since I increased already increased the memory.
    Any help to optimize and solve this problem will be very helpful.
    Thanks!

    chk this
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11036_01/doc.1013/e10295/xslt_mpr.htm
    you should have SOA composite application extension for this..
    if you dont want a visual transformation then you can use the jdeveloper project properties -> Run/Debug -> edit run configuration -> XSLT

  • Performance xsql:xml-include vs. xsl:document(...)  !

    Dear Steve,
    I have html markup file stored in XHTML format which is, of
    course, XML. Also, I put <marker id="some_name"/> in all places
    where I want XSLT injections.
    My XSLT is something like this:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
    xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
    <xsl:output method="html" indent="yes"/>
    <xsl:variable name="markup" select="document('MyMarkup.xml',/)"/>
    <xsl:template match="@* | node()">
    <xsl:copy>
    <xsl:apply-templates select="@* | node()"/>
    </xsl:copy>
    </xsl:template>
    <xsl:template match="/">
    <xsl:for-each select="$markup">
    <xsl:apply-templates select="html"/>
    </xsl:for-each>
    </xsl:template>
    <xsl:template match="html">
    <xsl:copy>
    <xsl:copy-of select="@*"/>
    <xsl:apply-templates/>
    </xsl:copy>
    </xsl:template>
    <xsl:template match="markup[@id='script']">
    <!-- do something here -->
    </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
    Now, here is the question. What is most efficient way to use
    this Markup technique?
    Is it <xsql:include-xml href=MyMarkup.xml/> in XSQL page
    and XSL processing the composite document or xsl:document
    function as I described?
    What is cached by XSQL servlet, if anything?
    The "markup" technique provides clear separation of labor and
    layers.
    And it is crucial to have it perform well. I think, that it
    would be very easy to cache xsql:include-xml document once and
    for all sessions or have a special attribute in this tag to
    explicitly ask for this.
    Sincerely,
    David

    ( I can't use
    <xml:transform>
    because this expects the xsl file as a parameter )But you know the name of the xsl file, so that shouldn't be a problem, correct...?
    But as to your question, the xml file is a static file, so the jsp:include will copy its contents (it acts like <%@ import %> in this case...). The jsp will only process the page if it detects it as a dynamic page, ie Servlet or JSP.
    Perhaps you can make an intermediary JSP that transforms the xml... I have never tried it, but would:
    //Intermediary JSP:
    <jsp:forward page="./stocks2.xml" />
    //then in the primary JSP
    <jsp:include page="./intermediary.jsp"/>It might fool the jsp:include into thinking the content is dynamic, while the jsp:forward would take care of processing the XML. That assumes that once the jsp:forward is done that the rest of the primary jsp will be handled... not sure if that is the case though...

  • XSL Tranformation Performance Tips

    there are a set of considerations to create XSL document with high performance transformation on the
    browser level, like for example using templates over for-each, what about on code transformation level?
    are those performance tips will also affect the XML/XSL transformation performance using the Transformer class?

    This thread didn't answer it? http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5381716&messageID=10685151#10685151
    You can use Javascript client side: http://www.w3schools.com/xsl/xsl_client.asp
    You can have the browser transform client side: http://www.w3schools.com/xsl/xsl_transformation.asp
    For the server, adding Templates is the easiest and first optimization you should consider. If you are marshalling and unmarshalling from XML to POJO's (plain ole Java objects), consider something like XMLBeans of JAXB instead of using XSL continuously. If you are going from POJO to XML to HTML, consider instead using something simple like JSP's instead.

  • Will too many "xsl:include"s affect performance?

    I have one main stylesheet which includes 5 other stylesheets. I would like to know which way is better for the performance:
    use 5 <xsl:include href="file.xsl"/> in the main stylesheet?
    or put all the codes from those 5 files directly into the main stylesheet?
    Thanks!
    Wenqi

    Hi Wenqi!
    I'm using up to 15 include files. This makes utvecklingen easier. I didn't find a loss in the perfomance. The stylesheet cache has to be big enough.

  • XSL style sheet not performing

    Hi,
    I'm playing around w/ the examples that came
    with XML SQL utility.
    The example works fine but does not apply
    the style sheet to the XML data produced from
    the SQL query. Is this a bug? Or is that
    the way its supposed to be ?
    I thought when you use

    that it converts the XML data to the HTML specified by the XSL sheet.
    But instead I still get ...

    This is working as designed.
    Calling setStylesheet() on XML SQL only adds the xml-stylesheet PI as you are seeing.
    If you want to combine XML SQL and XSLT transformations easily, see our XSQL Servlet software that part of the XDK. It does all of this for you automatically.

  • BIP report generation performance

    Hello all!
    I created (what I thought was) a simple Quote report that had quote header information and listed the line items below it on one page. I needed to create a custom Integration Object for this which I whittled down to include just 5 integration component objects.
    Now, when I run this report it takes about 5 minutes to generate which is ridiculously long for a one page report which was almost instantly produced when we used Actuate.
    I followed some of the "performance improves" guidelines in the Oracle Reports manual for 8.1.1 (we are on 8.1.1.2 SIA at the moment) but those had little effect on the outcome.
    Are there any other considerations I should take into account? Is there some best practice guidelines when designing reports?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
    Running the "preview" from Word, the report generates fine with no errors (that I can see) When I was developing it on a local thick client as well, it was running fine. But once I uploaded it onto the server etc it just takes ages to run.
    I've picked out the following lines from a quick scan of my xdo.log file, don't know if any of these can be the culprit?
    WARNING: Old RTF version detected, nested table disabled
    +[ERROR] [Line 3040.114] Missing body begin XSL context for: <?end for-each?>+

  • Performance issue with Business Objects Java JRC API in CRXI R2 version

    A report is developed using java JRC API in CR XI release 2. When I generate the report in the designer, it took less than 5 seconds to display the results in crystal report viewer inside the designer. But in the QA environment, when I generate the same report from the application, it takes almost 1 to 1.5 minutes to display the same results in PDF. I also noticed that if the dataset contains bigger volume of data, then the reports are taking even longer almost 15 to 20 minutes.
    While generating the report from the application, I noticed that most of time is taken during the execution of the com.crystaldecisions.report.web.viewer.ReportExportControl Object method as shown in following line of code
    exportControl.processHttpRequest(request, response, context, null)
    We thought the delay in exporting the report to PDF might be the layout of the report and data conversion to PDF for such a bigger volume of data.
    Then we investigated the issue and experimented quickly to generate the same report with same result set data from the application using XML, XSL and converted the output XSL-FO to PDF using Apache FOP (Formatting Objects Processor) implementation. The time taken to export the report to PDF is less than 6 seconds. By doing this experiment, it is proved that the issue is not with conversion of data to PDF but it is the performance problem with Business Objects Java JRC API in CR XI R2.
    In this regard, I searched for the above issue in the SAP community Network Forums -> Crystal Reports and Xcelsius -> Java Development -> Crystal Reports. But I did not find any answers or solutions for this kind of issue in the forums.
    Any suggestion, hint in this matter is very much appreciated.

    Ted, The setReportAppServer problem is resolved. Now I could able to generate the report with hardcoded values in the SQLs in just 6 seconds where as the same report was generated in CRXI R2 in 1 minute 15 seconds as mentioned in the earlier message.
    But, our exisiting application passes the parameter values to the SQLs embedded in the report. For some reason the parameters are not being passed to the report and the report displays only the labels without data.
    As per the crj 12 samples codes, the code is written as shown below.
    1. Created ReportClient Document
    2. SetReportAppServer
    3. Open the report
    4. Getting DatabaseController and switching the database connection at runtime
    5. Then setting the parameters as detailed below
    ParameteFields parameterFieldController = reportClientDoc.getDataDefController().getParameterFieldController();
    parameterFieldController.setCurrentValue("", "paramname",paramvalue);
    parameterFieldController.setCurrentValue("", "paramname",paramavalue);
    byteArrayInputStream = (ByteArrayInputStream)reportClientDoc.getPrintOutputController().export(ReportExportFormat.PDF);
    6. Streaming the report to the browser
    Why the parematers are not being passed to the report?  Do I need to follow the order of setting these parameters?  Did I miss any line of code for setting Params using  crj 12?
    Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do you override global variable values when calling oraxsl or xsl.exe?

    I am a newbie to oracle xslt.
    I have down loaded the latest version of xdk (10.1.0.2...). (Jan 2, 2009).
    In the past I haveI used micorsoft's "msxsl.exe" to perform my transformations.
    I am looking for a more up-to-date transformation tool.
    I found Oracle's version, and thought I would try it out.
    I have run the "bin/xsl.exe -hh" command.
    I read its help data. It states that variables are
    passed by coding a pramater "-V <var> <value>".
    I have also examined the oraxls.bat file.
    I found the documentation on "oracle.xml.parser.v2.oraxsl" class.
    It states that parameters are passed after the "-p" switch.
    It says the value of the -p parameter is "a list of paramemters".
    I don't find this sufficient information to be useful.
    I can spend days guessing, and I might get lucky.
    I thought it my be better to ask for help.
    I need to pass in (override) values for 3 global variables.
    I saw the method
    "setParam(namespace, variable, value)",
    near the documentation for the "oraxsl" class.
    How do you format the options string to communicate more than one param statement?
    (in either xsl.exe and/or oraxsl class).
    Suppose I have an xslt stylesheet as follows:
    ==================================================
    <?xml version="1.0" ?>
    <xsl:stylesheet version="1.1" xmlns:xsl='http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform' >
    <xsl:param name='a' select='"default_a"' />
    <xsl:param name='b' select='"default_b"' />
    <xsl:param name='c' select="'default_c"' />
    <xsl:template match='/'>
    this is value for a: <xsl:value-of select='$a' />
    this is value for b: <xsl:value-of select='$b' />
    this is value for c: <xsl:value-of select=$c' />
    <xsl:apply-templates />
    </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
    ========================================================
    Now as part of the calling of the XSL processor I want to change the value of these
    three global parameters.
    I want:
    a="current_a",
    b="current_b",
    and c="current_c"
    How do I express this using xsl.exe and its paramter string (-V ????).
    and/or how do I express it to the oraxsl class ( -p (xsl, a,"current_a"), (....) )???
    The syntax for specifying this information is not very clear in either situation.
    Of course I am making the "assumption" that by "param" they are
    refering to "global parameters" (as in my stylesheet), rather than some other global parameters of XLST.
    As an aside inquiry:
    I had hopped that the Oracle's xsl Verion 2 routine could handle xslt 2.0 commands
    such as "xsl:for-each-group", since it handled multiple xsl:outputs.
    From reading some of the documentation it seems it only handles xslt 1.0 syntax/commands.
    Is this true? (or is the documentation not up-to-date?).
    Any help on passing param values to xsl.exe and/or "oraxsl" class is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Here is the line from one of my testing .bat files that passed in one parameter. I can't recall if I've passed in two, but this will give you a starting point for passing in multiple
    java -cp %CPath% oracle.xml.parser.v2.oraxsl -p show_image='yes' %ValXML% %ValXSLT% As for XSLT 2.0 support, it appears it does per {thread:id=503445}

    It would have helped if you had posted your code as CODE but as it is, I could hardly read it. My guess about what you are asking is, if you want a template to return a value, just write that value to the result stream inside the template.
    If that wasn't what you were asking, then please post your code in a readable format.
