4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio

Ive been producing a video editor using the free tool
AVISYNTH.
But would like to do most of the math processing in director
since its faster.
My problem is, lets say I have an image whose dimensions are
576x409
I want to cut out a part of that image; that portion could
equal 720X480 if enlarged.
So far the only math I can think of is: (the images
width*720)/720..and changing it to 480 for height.
(this although, yields incorrect results for height)
Has anyone dealt with this type of situation..or could
atleast point me in the right direction.
Other math formulas are appreciated as well.
Thank you.
(if I am unclear please specify )

A subtle but very effective convention when creating a
function: set a
local variable to the output of the function at the various
points where
you'd normally use "return"
Then return that local variable at the end of the handler.
Among other
things it allows you to put just one break point on the
return, when
debugging, to easily see the returned value. Plus, for those
who like to
follow the rules, it's what decent coding books teach.
For the most part it makes no difference in performance.

How can one convert a picture to 1080 pixels in height at 72 dpi and retain the aspect ratio?

The ppi has nothing to do with this. It will stay at whatever it is.
Go to image>resize>resize image, turn ON Resample image and enter 1080 for the height, making sure to leave constrain proportions turned on. Don't mess with the ppi setting.
If the image is set to another ppi setting, then after you're done with the above, go back into that window, turn OFF resample image, and set the ppi to 72. PPI only affects the inc/cm measurement.

I'm exporting an edited scene from an external hard drive to a macbook but the video on the laptop is anamorphic (squished) compared to the original file on the hard drive.  How do I export the file and keep the aspect ratio intact?

Please give the exact specs of your project. If the material is anamorphic, aspect ratio display is a function of the playback device. What is it?

Hi, Downsize does not seem all that great according to reviews. Why not see if you can buy PS E' 3 mac -- maybe ebay/amazon (if I remember I only paid about $70 for PS E3) As PS E4 just came out I'm sure someone has PS E3 for sale. You will then have no problems completing your image resizing.
2 other questions for you..are you using the Mac side of your intel or Windows?
if your using the Windows side I can let you have PS 6 (PC) ..freegratus.

I just don't get it. . . . I have imported a pdf file into MOTION 2, unchecked BOTH Fixed Aspect Ratio boxes on both the media and the layers and I am still getting major rasterization!
When I scale up the file in Acrobat, there are NO problems. It's something that I am not doing in MOTION.
    Any help is VERY appreciated.

Are you putting any filters on it - that causes rasterization...

  • Front Row and 4:3 Aspect Ratio

    Hi,
I love Front Row (upgraded to 1.01), it just has one flaw that makes it bad for movies. I have a 16:9 aspect Cinema Display, and whenever I want to watch 4:3 DivX movies, I want to stretch their aspect ratio to 16:9 so they fill the screen, but Front Row (so, Quicktime Player) doesn't offer this, or does it?
Other freeware players like VLC and Mplayer can do this, but they don't work with Front Row.
Is there a setting that will stretch the source material?

I'm exporting from FCE and I then use it in iDVD. My brain is fried, and I may have not been clear on the following: I export from FCE using File => use quicktime conversions.
Now when I export to straight-up Quicktime (not use quicktime filters), and then take that Quicktime file into iDVD it gives me a "Widescreen Preview" and when I take the next step and burn to DVD and play on a 4:3 aspect TV it comes out with the black bar on top and bottom (Which I believe is letterbox?)
So that being said, I'm at a loss as to why there are letterboxes in iDVD.
    Thanks in advance.

It appears they are going from "Photo to Movie" straight into iDVD and having a similar issue. The big difference is that I'm using FCE before I go to iDVD.

  • So annoying: Import and Capture FORCING aspect ratio into widescreen

I filmed some stuff in 'cinema' mode on my camera, which creates the widescreen 'effect' in the 4:3 aspect ratio by simply making those black bars. But the video REALLY IS 4:3. Final Cut Pro recognizes that. However, iMovie keeps forcing it into widescreen ratio without cropping it. The result: terribly squashed people who look like oompa loompas and one VERY ANNOYED PERSON. I hate this. Even though the project is 4:3, it keeps doing that. I don't know what to do--it happens with both import from a separate file (captured via Final Cut Pro) and when it is captured in iMovie itself.
    ANY HELP???

Check it out: www.mamluftcodance.com/video/071128t41rehearsal-a.mov. The beginning looks normal, the way it should (4:3 with letterboxing creating a widescreen 'effect').
Was actually seeking a sample of your source file to see if I could find a workaround in iMovie '08 as I was unsure whether or not I could simulate your original problem on my own. However, since you provided an output sample, as an intellectual exercice, I manipulated the playback of your file by segmenting the file, cropping the viewing area (which unfortunately included part of your title), re-scaling one segment to match the other (FYI: neither is 16:9 widescreen), and offsetting one to match the other's viewing area. As I was in a hurry, I didn't go back and correct my initial approximations, so some "elements" are still "rough." My guess is that your file was both shot in a "letterbox" mode and flagged as anamorphic -- thus, in effect, appying the "anamorphic stretch" to the already letterboxed content.

  • What export format for best resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio

    Team,
I am putting together a DVD for my son's hockey season. It is a mixture of Livetype stuff, imported DV clips (Not HD), and using a program called Photo To Movie for my photo montage's.
I have about 2 mins of livetype stuff, and about 2 mins of an export from "Photo to movie" in iMovie DV (NTSC) format
Now I'm doing a few dry runs to see if this newbie can get this to DVD using iDVD. Now when I burn it, and I play it on a standard DVD player on a standard 4:3 ratio TV, I'm seeing a black bar on the top and on the bottom.
The only way I get those bars to go away is if I export from FCE in Streaming DV format (export using quicktime options and choosing DV Streaming (then imported into iDVD), but I'm feeling my quality is lower as a result. Am I off here? Is there a format that has high export quality .
I'm new to mac, and am not accustomed to "Exporting" and "Importing" and maybe I'm screwing something up during those events. I just think my video quality may be suffering because I can only get DV Streaming to not have the black bars when burning with iDVD.
Any advice would be appreciated asap.
    Thanks!

  • How do you rip anime dvds with deinterlacing and the same aspect ratio?

Hi I use clips from anime dvds for a hobby of mine. I have a problem. I can't find the right program or the right instruction to convert my m2v or vob files into crsip clean video clips with deinterlacing and low file space. Is Missing Media Burner the right program? What is the step by step process? If you need anymore detail I will be more than happy to say it. I ripped the clips from MAC the Ripper.

    Daniel,
Your first post - and - I wonder how many more to follow?
Unlesss you have permissions from the copyright© owner of the material you are using for your "hobby" - you are on very dodgy ground.
If you are a student - working on projects on campus - using the facilities of the University - on found footage - under the auspices of academia - that's different. However, hobby - oh dear oh dear.

  • Aspect Ratio between FCE and LiveType

I've been working on a project in FCE 3.5 and doing titles in LiveType 2.1. I noticed that when I import into LiveType there is a thin checkered line at the bottom of the video window. When I looked at the aspect ratio setting in the Livetype "Project Properties" it was set on "CCIR 601 NTSC" which has an aspect ratio of 720x486. In my FCE project, my clips are all 720x480, which seems to explain the thin checkered line. So I went back to Livetype and changed the aspect ratio to 720x480. Sure enough, the checkered line was gone, but the mode automatically changed from "CCIR 601 NTSC" to "NTSC DV 3:2". The problem is that my clips in FCE have the "CCIR 601" pixel aspect, but not the 720x486 aspect ratio that Livetype associates with that. Eventually I'm hoping to export this to DVD.
My questions are: is this something I should worry about? Should I use the 720x486 or 720x480 aspect ratio in LiveType?
    Thanks

Type cmd+zero and open the project properties in LiveType. then choose DV NTSC for the properties... you'll be good to go.

  • How to crop canvas and change aspect ratio?

I'm working on a project shot with an old camera from the 70s. I used that camera but recorded the signal on my mini dv camera. Now I have a black border on the right side of the image.
This project is going on the Web, not TV. How can I crop the canvas (and change the aspect ratio) without a black border? I know there's a crop feature in the motion tab, but that results in same aspect ratio with black border. Is this possible?
(I don't care if the aspect ratio is non-standard, and I don't want to letterbox.)

If you are going to the web (what means you'll downscale at the end) and you shoot using an old camera, the loss of quality of the upscaling probably means nothing in your final web encoding.
You can make a test upscaling just some seconds of your movie an encoding it for the web to check the final quality.
    Hope that helps !

  • Understanding aspect ratios in FC and Photoshop

Hi all. Two questions regarding aspect ratio:
    1. I'm editing with footage from a Canon MK2 camera. My computer tells me the footage is 1920 X 1080 but it looks 16/9. Why is that?
    2. When I make a still (Tiff) in Final Cut from the same footage and bring it into Photoshop, it says image size 1440 X 1080, but it looks 4:3. Why? What is the best way to get the picture back into 16/9 - a. change image size to 1920 X 1080 b. leave image size as is and change pixel aspect ratio to HDV 1080 (1.33), or c. some method I haven't tried? Methods 1 and 2 appear to fix the problem and the results are practically identical. But I'm confused about the process and would like to understand these numbers.
    Thanks in advance for help.

    1. Because 1920:1080 = 16:9 (1920/16=120 120x9=1080)
    2. Because your sequence settings are 1440x1080 which is anamorphic.
b makes the most sense to me as a fix.

  • Confused about pixel aspect ratio and video size

    Hello,
I have edited a whole dvd full of video and exported it as MPEG-2  NTSC DV Wide - it says 720 x 480, 29.97 fps. I have brought these into Encore and am trying to make a menu but can't seem to get the menu size right. Since I chose the wide format when making the video, which aspect ratio should I use in Encore? It gives me a choice in the properties menu, but when I go to Project settings it says Codec: MPEG-2 Dimensions 720 x 480. Whenever I bring in a menu background from photoshop, it doesn't fit, and is further complicated by the pixel aspect ratio thing. I have no idea what my background size should be to make it fit properly - the templates seem to all be the 4:3 size. What size should I be using in Photoshop and which pixel aspect ratio?
Is my video codec going to cause me a problem in Encore? I assumed that most tvs nowadays are widescreen (at least not square), so I should do the video wide as well.
Thanks for any help! I am thoroughly confused.

Use a template menu from Encore's library. Then modify as you need. That way you know that it will be the right pixel size and par. You cannot made an incorrectly sized/par'd menu work by setting it to 16:9 or 4:3 in the menu properties. It must be correct, and if so, Encore will usually pick the correct setting.
The Encore project settings for DVD really have no choices: it has to be  720x480 for NTSC. There is no project setting for par. You have to create the menu correctly - just let Encore do that for you by using a template.
Was your video source widescreen? If so, then you'll be fine on your video. If not, you may need to sort that out also.

  • Aspect ratio and some other questions...

I haven't purchased an Apple TV yet (emphasizing YET) but I'm very interested and may make the leap tomorrow. I've been reading a lot on the discussion boards but still had a few questions. I have a widescreen 46" Samsung LCD TV that I'm planning to use as my primary TV. The wife and I have rented a few movies from the iTunes store and noticed the aspect ratio leaves the picture fairly small. I wasn't expecting a full screen picture, but something a little more than barely half the screen. Will the Apple TV improve the picture size or is this what I'm going to expect going forward? Any pictures would be great!
Second, as far as I've read, you cannot connect an external hard drive to the Apple TV itself, but if I hook it to my PowerBook and use my external HDD as my iTunes Library source, will everything work fairly seamlessly? I have an Airport Extreme base station so I'm hoping things work pretty well.
Next, between the 40GB and 160GB Apple TV's -- is there an overwhelming reason to get one or another?
And last (I think), I've started ripping some of my old movies using Handbrake and was curious how the picture comes out on an Apple TV after extracting from DVD's. I've been using the standard "Apple TV" settings within Handbrake.
Thanks in advance for the help, I appreciate it! BTW, definitely a BIG fan of the iTunes rentals!
    Brad

I don't know what monitor you have but there is a fair chance it has a resolution of at least 1600 x 1000 which is why your 640 x 480 rental doesn't fill it although itunes does have an option tto show movies full screen.
Tv's typically have much lower resolutions than monitors and the output from the tv is matched to such resolutions. In short your rentals will fill the screen on your tv when played on the tv.
Many of us here use external drives attached to either a desktop or a laptop to hold out libraries, yes they work flawlessly.
We can't actually discuss methods for ripping commercial DVD's but needless to say handbrake does give good quality exports, I've used it on a few non commercial discs and found the results to be more or less the same quality as the original. In addition to the  preset I always enable 2 pass encoding.

  • Aspect ratio help for a newbie?

    Hi Everyone,
I've got a Sony DCR SR-32 camera (please don't laugh ) and shooting in its HQ mode, (9Mb/s) and 16:9 aspect ratio.
I can import the footage into iMovie and make a movie with no problems. But I've just bought FCE and am struggling to get the footage imported at the correct 16:9 aspect ratio. After trawling the discussions I've tried the log and transfer method, and all the other relevant discussion on importing AVCHD files directly into FCE but no success (I get file opening error ?). So I'm bringing the footage into iMovie, exporting it from iMovie as an FCE XML file and opening that using PAL anamorphic or NTSC anamorphic Easy setups.
Even so, I've got what looks like 16:9 video squeezed into a 4:3 aspect ratio with black boarders on either side padding it out back to the 16:9 size.
I'd welcome any advice other than "get a new camera "

Hi Tom, I seem to have a similar problem, not sure if you've seen this, but I have the new canon vixia hg 21 which is avchd and FCP 6 isn't recognizing it either. Using Imovie to recognize the files works fine, the problem is that when you export from imovie '08 into FCP via xml, it imports fine, but I also get the same display issue with the black bars surrounding the footage, only in the canvas. It appears fine in the viewer and in it's own sequence in the timeline. But when you mix the different camera footage together, the other being the Canon XH A1, it appears as a different aspect ratio??? What the?
ANy help would be greatly appreciated!
